I suppose he gave good reasons to think it was an airplane except for all the other experts who work with various missiles and launches who say it's a missile including explaining the area where the missile veered from a course correction when it's control system was engaged. I hope he wasn't "convinced" by someone to think it was a plane. Though I also hope it was a plane, the idea of China launching a missile off the coast as some sort of sign is appalling.

It was a MISSILE not a plane

if you look at the base of the trail, you can see it correcting it's self, then it's a smooth arc... that was the guidance systems kicking in. It is NOT an ICBM from Vandenberg AFB but a SLBM from a US Navy submarine.
