"US Navy pilots are the only pilots in the world who land on aircraft carriers both day and night".
Who's the jerk who wrote that?
French Navy (night landing of a Rafale on aircraft carrier CDG): search for "Landing by night onboard Rafale" on youtube
I'm not sure for the Royal Navy and its Harrier, but I guess they pretty do the same. So I confirm that US Navy pilots are NOT the only pilots in the world who land on aircraft carriers both day and night.
I agree with one of the comments thats said with women in the cockpit its becoming sissy! Men fight wars woman help any other way Ie on home front if a woman is injured a man will try to rescue her. War is evil sorry they shouldn't be there!
US Navy pilots seem nicer people than most USAF- I think the night landings still keep the ego in check, pitch black with 300 yards of rolling steel surrounded by ocean, not a nice comfy 2 or more miles of asphalt.
Good observation all..! There are sneak clips of the F-18. Jay and Meagan both requal'd on the F-18 after the F-14 was retired. If I'm not mistaken, the -14 made its "fini-flight" in '06. The movie was relased released in '08? So it's possible that the folks in the editing department may have used footage that may have filmed at Oceana during F-18 training. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong - thanks
@ewthmatth those numbers are the descending feet per minute i believe, 700 or so is the standard rate of descent that will put the aircraft to the deck. if they say 600, or anything less, she is below the glideslope and need to add power and pull the aircraft up a tiny bit.
Correct, the RIO is calling out the current VSI. It varies slightly based on the wind over the deck and aircraft weight. If you are a bit low 600 might be needed to correct, or, it may be that you have too much power on and you are about to go high at 600 FPM (feet per minute). The call out is what the aircraft is currently doing, not what is needed. I never liked the RIO calling out VSI values, but some folks like it.
@kayakutah its a CRM (crew resource management) thing. in this case during her landings, the RIO is helping Meagan with task management so she can fly the plane more proficiently and allows her to have less things to keep looking at during her constant scan of her instruments. i take it you are a pilot or have some sort of background, cheers from a fellow aviator
@paintballmassaker ...I flew two cruises in the F-14 in VF-114 on the USS Enterprise, before that one cruise in RF-8s on the Indy. Spent 2 years flying active duty adversary at Miramar (F-16N, A-4) and spent 6 years flying adversary in the reserves in VFC-13 (Super Foxes). I have to admit, most guys liked the call outs, and most used autothrottles at night. Oddball that I am, I flew manual at night and made the RIO keep quiet. Were you Navy?
@kayakutah oh wow that's awesome, i definitely don't have your background and probably never will but i fly general aviation so i can eventually fly for commercial airlines. that may be a shock considering (not to be selfish) i know what im talking about for the most part. but that's really awesome that you got to do those things, i wanted to be a fighter pilot for as long as i could remember.
@paintballmassaker That's excellent. Keep flying and build the hours. In about 5 years, there will be a huge flood of retirees from the majors (I'll be one of them) and, if you are available with an ATP rating when that occurs, you'll have it made! The hiring will be frantic.
@rabd1967 I'm speaking in terms of VSI during approach on speed. 700 to 800 FPM would be ball park for an F-14 at max trap. The 600 FPM state would be to correct for being below glide path. If you are low, you have to reduce the sink rate to get back onto the glide path. It would be transitory, probably lasting a couple of seconds. It's all about flying the ball.
The answer to that Fool's question at 3.26 is BECAUSE IT'S NECESSARY and cos the 'ASSHOLE' who invented it figured ALL MEN WHO'D DO IT WUD HV BoLLS ... ;3l
when hes says he hates the guy who invented night landings on aircraft carriers its just like kids and their hate for the person who invented homework
Tan flight suits are usually worn when operating in the middle east or when operating over predominantly desert-terrain. they have nothing to do with rank. the rank can be distinguised by the bars on the shoulders.
Pretty sure the RIO is calling out Rate of Decent, off the Vertical Speed Indicator, in Feet per Minute. Helps to keep you referenced to the glide slope. Thats my best educated guess.
Question, why dont they use night vision goggles for the landing? Or is it a case of practice without them so you can do it if they are not available when the time comes?
At 5:00 they lied saying that Us navy pilots are the only pilots in the World who land day and night on Aicraft carriers. Both Russians and French aircraft carrier pilots land day and night on Kuznetsov for the russians and on the Charles de Gaulle for the French . There are plenty of vids on that on youtube ...
yep but it's different and much more complicated for the brits 'cos their aircraft carriers are for the Vertical Take-off and landing Harrier (They used to have F-4's with classic steam catapult and landing cables but not anymore)
Here's to the women and men of the armed forces of the United States of America. Thank you ladies and gents.

@kayakutah 600 feet per minute is really really slow for a jet fighter

Night Landings on AIRCRAFT CARRIERS.
And yes, they are the only ones.
You need to read more carefuly.
tinchosenventysix 2 years ago 2
USMC pilots do too when attached to a carrier, however they are also Naval Aviaitors.

Im not sure exactly what all the different uniforms stand for. I may be wrong about the rank thing...But I am sure you could google it ;)

The flight suits are in reference to the terrain they are flying over.
