  • what size NST do you recommend?

Also, ive tried to look up how to make a MMC tank cap and can't seem to find anything helpful, do you have any suggestions?

Ill try the tuning like you said, thanks!

  • @beccapooley

Anything from 6Kv upward seems to be the norm. For the size of secondary you have its a similar size to mine. I run a 10Kv @ 50mA. For more Tesla info try searching Google for "deepfriedneon" as there are some guides on there on making MMCs and how to work out your MMC, NST, Primary and Secondary to get best results. Let me know how you get on! :D

  • I have 2 4000 V NSTs wired in pallel

A stationary spark gap, set 1/16 inch apart

1 water bottle capacitor (i think i might need another one but i couldnt find enough info to back this asumption)

my secondary is a 24 inch, 4 inch diameter pvc tube that is wired 20 inches (2 inches in from each in)

my seondary coil is tuned at the 1st and 8th turni built my topload from a pie pan and aluminum duct

i think that is everything, anything you know will be deeply appreciated!

  • @beccapooley

    Hi,

I suspect it may be your cap which is at fault. The NSTs sound a little small too for such a large coil. I would reccomend making an MMC type tank cap unless you are sure your bottle cap is ok. The tuning sounds a little off too, first and 8th turns seems too close and too far from your secondary coil. Try turn 6 or 4 to start with. If your topload is large, try reducing its size to about 6" across. Make sure you have good RF earthing (not mains earth!).

  • hi, i dont know if you still check your comments, but i recently built a tesla coil myself, and even though it lights up a bulb, i cant see any visible electrical arcs, even when done at night, do you know why this happens?

  • @beccapooley

Hi! Well done on building a coil!

Can you provide some details on your coil and I may be able to help.

Try putting a drawing pin on your topload and see if you can see any breakout. I would also experiment with tuning your coil by moving the tapping on the primary, you should find a sweet spot.

Let me know some specs and I will try to help.

  • In many egyptian paintings and statues, they are holding tesla coils in their hands..

Egpytians seem to keep on proving themselfs to be amazing..

Most of what we have has came from them, especially in homeopathic health practices.

Does this tesla coil actually power your house? Or a machine that would spin an alternator at least that could charge a series of battery banks? Hint Hink..

5 volts can turn a hard drive motor fast enough to spin an alternator id think, let me know ideas, thanks

  • @RobMonty248

The Egyptians certainly developed some facinating technology! This coil doesnt power anything really, they are generally created for the technical challenge and for experimentation. The coil is a mere 500w and powered from the mains, its not a free energy device so there would be no benefit of having it power anything or using it to "transmit" power to anything.

For your HDD idea, using a solar panel/wind to charge batteries would be far better I think.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Tvmender, thanks! I just did that before I got your reply and its fascinating what this guy as done for humanity and does not seems to have the just credit due here....!

Man and now seems like cars of the future will use his technology/knowledge at least I ve seen his name on one of those in TV...cheers from Ecuador...! :=)

  • I see many explanations and scientific formulas and great looking stuff but please somebody guide me to: what advantages and practical applications all these tesla electric devices offer?..like to know more about it in practice etc..

  • Hi,

Tesla devloped these coils as a way of "transmitting" electricity and had a vision of flying machines powered by these stations placed around the globe, he also had plans for weapons and such based on this technology.

Nikola Tesla invebted many things incluing florecent lighting, radio control and advanced generators.

If you search Nikola Tesla on Google there is a plethora of information on him.

Mainly these coils are constructed for fun and the technical challenge.

  • @capitansurfista It is said that pyramids where used for many things, transmitting energy was one of them, NASA is actually working on this and have shown a working model of microwave technology that basically is fueless. There is something used, but its everywhere in all regions of space/earth. Tesla had most of it down right, so did the egyptians. watch?v=Jv8CB9VURNc&feature=PlayList&p=9D4377212455BAE9&playnext_from=PL&index=0&playnext=1

  • It'd be so cool to toss a steel ball bearing at where the streams are!

  • How about a uranium ball instead? ^_^

  • Secondary coil diamter is about 1.4"

Toroid is 4 inch diamter aluminum ducting in a circle with a 8" inner diamter and 12" outer diameter.

I have tried tapping everything to achieve a spark and still nothing. My calculations show that tapping around turn 9 should be resonant.

Once concern is that my capacitor .01mF capacito is too high. I didn't think that the .01mF capacitor and 0.007mF would be enough to make a difference. The spark gap fires regularly but no sparks off the toroid.

  • Alright, I am building my first coil for a physics class, and I have a little different setup than yours, but am having some problems that I thought someone reading this may be able to help me with. Here's the setup.

    Primary

    12000v 30ma NST

    15,000V 0.02mF Capacitor (2 in series)

Static Spark Gap (Set around .5 inches)

1/4" copper tube primary (Flat pancake spiral) 1/4" spacing with inner diamter of 6" and outer of 12" and 12 turns.

    Secondary

16 inch of 24 guage mag wire (about 730 turns)

  • Can you please help me. My tesla coil will only throw a spark to a grounded piece of metal. How can i change it so it has air discharges like yours. My tesla coil specifications are:

    12kv 30ma NST

12 inch high, 3.5 inch wide secondary

    21kv 222uf MMC

    Adjustable spark gap

12 turns of 1/4 inch copper pipe tapped at 12 turns.

Yet i cannot get a visible air discharge. PLease help me

  • how bout you ground itt

  • Indeed. Surely you have grounded the bottom end of the secondary? If so, then try tuning it by adjusting spark gap and tapping on the primary. If nothing happens after playing around for a while, i got no idea.

  • You need to "tune" your coil. Try removing/adding coils from the primary winding and/or adjusting the sparkgap.

  • @fatboyslim27

Try tuning your coil and using a small tack as a breakout, make sure you have a good RF ground too!

Many of the Tesla coiling groups could help you further.

    Good Luck,

    Tvmender

  • Hi Sam,

It seems tO be running well. Ikea rules OK! Hope to see you at Cambridge this year.

  • Hi!

Yes I will be at Cambridge! Hope to see you there!

Ikea, furniture, meatballs and Tesla coil toploads.

  • How is the SG so quiet?

  • Hi RotogenRay,

Its not! lol, the popping on the audio you can hear is the spark gap overloading the MIC, I need to stand further away when I next film it. I did notice that the spark gap sound changed with the size of the venue affecting tuning. The gap was alot quieter nearer resonance than when I tuned it in my garage.

    Safe coiling!

  • alrighty, that makes sense...

I just thought theat was the RF interfering with the camera... it still sounds like if it was overloading it it would be a louder tone...

  • You might be right! I was a little too close with this video though. Not sure my guarantee covers damage by Tesla Coil :O)

  • well, say it inexplicably failed:P

  • i recognise that coil from derby!! running better now!! join the youtube tc group "please"

  • Thanks! Yes got it sorted now :O) I will join the group!

  • I'm liking it!
