While this DOES mark me as a nerd for being able to answer this...

Gygax is the last name of the man effectively credited with inventing "Dungeons and Dragons" and with it the entire genre of Role Playing Turn Based Board Games. And in most of these games, during "fighting" and other such actions, whether a player succeeds or fails at a task is dictated by chance when they roll several different sided dice, which are "many faced", which in latin is "polyhedral"
