@Roodosutaa ...Darkie was originally a 1933 Chinese toothpaste brand bought by Colgate/Palmolive the same year this video was made, IIRC, it's still sold in China, with the name changed to Darlie, but the racist stereotypes left intact, and is not available in the US. There are reports that visitors from China and US tourists returning who have tubes of Darkie in their bags are having them confiscated by customs officials. Go figure.
@B0bMosley3 I should know, I was born in HK. Last I checked (on a business trip 2 days ago) it's alive and well and yes I remember as a kid in the 80s they made a big fuss about the name change with a full tv commercial and newspaper ads announcing the change.
Still called "Black Man Toothpaste" in Chinese though. Even though the mascot is anything but black.
fantastically talented group. everyone was a top notch musician.
they really knew how to write great hooks. were the first rock band to play communist china from the west. the band broke up at the hight of it's popularity when the guitarist/songwriter quit because of burnout and his professed desire to race cars.
Not only was the Wall's fall an important symbol of the end of Communism, but just as much was Wham's trip to China four years earlier. I remember seeing this as a 15 year old and not thinking much of it. I didn't realize it was a tectonic shift that I was seeing. I just remember thinking to myself; "wow ... Chinese chicks are hot."
I love this song!!!!!!!! Thanks for posting it..I had it saved from a different user and seen it wasn't available..I thought, I'd never find it again!!!!!! GREAT JOB!!!!!!!!!!
...Amazing to think there were one =billion= less Chinese when this video was made, ain't it?

It's amazing to see China back when it was still isolated from the West.

I have read that the woman at 4:21 is George Michael's sister. She does look very Greek. Does anyone know if this is true?

Fascinating images. Snapshots from a China just on the verge of opening up, 1985.
