  • Those Basses are working hard - super sound!

  • I've been listening around the posts for this piece all morning and can categorically declare that Black Dyke play this piece with an unrivalled passion bordering on fanaticism ! Listen to Grimethorpe in 1998 with their amazing solo cornet. Brighouse and Rastrick in 2011, or Black Dyke in the rain 2009. On my dessert island this would get me out of bed in the morning ! Thanks from an expat who misses this culture so much. These amazing sounds bring tears of joy !

  • I've been listening to brass band postings all morning of this piece. I can categorically state that Black Dyke play this piece with an unrivalled passion bordering on fanataicism ! Although some bands provide more lyricism, at the end of the day on a dessert island, this would be the only performance that would get me out of bed in the morning ! Listen to Grimethorpe 1998 and Brighouse and Rastrick 2011. Black Dyke in the rain 2009 ! Thanks from an expat who misses this culture so much.

  • i liked that part from 0:00 to 4:34

  • I cannot think of a better brass band than these guys. Simply superb!

  • saw another recording of this last year and right at the start you can hear someone barking like a dog.

  • @MyFkinName It was a dog

  • Where's the percussion?

  • This is from the Whit Friday contest in Saddleworth. Percussion isn't allowed.

  • bessstt march by far!

lower end of the band have got an amaazzzing part, really creates the brilliance

  • Love the basses at 2:50 to 3:00. Wonderful blend guys!

  • I see a whale :O

  • the whale plays a pretty good bass though...

  • @Cala6491 how rude!!!!!!!!

  • I love Grimethorpe's version, but this one is a lot more ballsy.

  • Is this available for wind band?

  • brass bands only im sure.

  • a mark of 99.5.

you tell me what was wrong with that.

  • 0.5, obviously.

  • 100 is probably the mark only God deserves... but this came pretty close to that!!

  • I absolutely love this march

  • I was there when they did this is was fantastic =) and whit friday=Amazing times =) xx

  • ahhhhhhh this bring back memorys of when i wa a lad wit friday in greenfield.

  • Perfect

  • It would be nice if there were more videos of this group on here.

  • Very nice bass

  • Such fine bass brass but, how uncomfortable to the low back hold these units in this manor..Such beatiful intonation..so sweet to the ear! I so appreciate these players..Thankyou so much!

  • see the comments on when I asked Matt R how he does it on second page

  • Quel volume !

  • Without a doubt one of the finest performances I've heard in a long time. Black Dyke is the greatest!

  • MY GOD!!! What a bass section!!!

  • 1 word; AMAZING. Just so tight!

  • Really good players. They are world class. I do workshops with some of the players every year. I also do a concert with them. Well not just me the whole of consett junior brass. Im very priveledged tbh.

  • Absolutely top class! Along with Grimethorpe, the best in the world (I've lived in Bradford AND Barnsley so I'm biased towards both bands). Just one critisism - I thought the saxophones were a bit feeble ... just joking.

  • And I live in Wales, so my bias and the 4barsrest rankings insist that you include Cory in your list of the 'best in the world'. Along with Foden's, these bands are truly in a league of their own.

  • saxophones? no saxes in a BRASS band!

  • Yes, I know - that's why I put "just joking" at the end to emphasise my last comment was a humorous one and not a literal statement.

  • damn that's tight

  • I asked Matt (the bass player and strap in question) and to quote:

"I was wearing the marching strap but not in the usual method. When we march down the street I wear it over my right shoulder as normal to support the instrument.

For the contest march though, I find that the strap impedes the breating slightly so I take it off and hang it over my left shoulder, which gives a little bit of support.

Hope this clears up the srap on (ha ha ha!!!) or off question for everyone.

  • nice bass part

  • Black Dyke were absolutely immense at the Yorkshire Area. What a performance! And this performance of Knight Templar isn't so bad either :]

  • DA BASS IS GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I agree the bass is awsome along woth the rest of the band.

  • what a bass part

  • it is indeed :) i play that part with the band im in :) i love this march!!

  • I have to say, seeing these guys in real life is almost an unreal experience. I've seen them in concert twice now, and they were the best two concerts I've ever been to!

  • Nice to see a couple of young lads playing with the top band!

  • Though I cannot speak for the band, but I do say essentially, if you do not play well (too wrong notes etc).,

    You are out!

So,keep practising all you aspiring 'Black Dyke' players!!

The Best Band in the entire World!

    Cheers

  • a wrong note can happen to the best.

though it is certain that the best end up with Black Dyke or another top of the line Brass Band!!

  • So, Black Dyke are the best in the world, eh? Look at 4 bars rest rankings. They may be pretty amazing, but at the moment, Grimethorpe and Cory are higher than them.

  • @Oakeley Yes, but look at the band's achievements over the last century. 22 National Championships (4 in last decade), 29 Open Championships (2 in last decade) shows a consistency over a long time. Unparalleled

  • The 'Black Dyke Mills Band' is the BEST Brass Band in the whole world!

    Cheers

  • omg its amazing!!! Black Dyke band are so cool xx

  • The basses are amazing.

  • FANTASTIC BASSES!!! This piece is one of the best contest marches in the world. Well played.

  • sounds fantastic.

  • Woaouhhhh !

Les Brass band anglais ont les meilleurs cornettistes de la planète.

J'adore toutes ces musiques que j'écoutais sur la BBC le samedi afternoon depuis St-Malo !

Sorry my english is not good because my teachers were too crazy lol

    I'm 62 old.

    Kenavo

  • Bon jour mon ami. Je suis 57 et je ne parle pa francais. Le band "Black Dycke" est fantastique.

    John Whitmmore

  • How did the BBb bass players manage to hold the instruments for so long without straps? They are heroes - not many players could do it! Why not use straps? I know that the mouthpiece position with a strap is difficult, but can be corrected with a shank.

  • they have straps...

  • The Eb palayers have straps - the Bb do not. The Sovereign BBb is so heavy that most people could not hold it in the playing positiuon for more than a few minutes!

  • there are two bb basses, right?

and they're standing to the right as we see them, right?

just look at the very end ~4.27-4.33 and you'll see no 2 from the right (no 3 counting the cornet) removing a *drum roll drrrrrr* strap!

  • Yes, I agree - the BBb player on our left does have a strap attached to the top carriage ring of the instrument, but it does not seem to go over his right shoulder, where you would expect it to be. The strap also seems to be very slack. The usuual way to play with a strap would be to have it very tight (like the EEb player). Perhaps the BBb player could tell us what is going on?

  • call him!

    =P

  • See my answer on more recent posts

  • the "pedal" sound in the basses...yes!!!!

  • Fantastic video! Great brass blend and I love the basses!

  • Top class playing throughout the piece.

  • Even through my tiny laptop speakers this sounds just glorious! Bravo!

  • OMG, I Love It!

  • you cant get any better than this!

  • Me too, teflonde, hedley and everyone else who loves the sound of brass. My dad was a trombonist, I've played cornet and tenor horn but have moved on to trumpet because it's more versatile. I'll never stop loving this sound though (I can feel a slating coming on!!!)

  • Hi tubumar!

In reply to your comment (above):

I personally live, breath and even eat for 'Black Dyke Mills'

For your info, I am a brass Band 'NUT' and Black Dyke, without a shadow of a doubt, are the best... not just in the UK, but in the entire world.

    Cheers,

    John

  • I think its much to hard sounding, like most english brass bands...

  • What does it matter if you see the people really though? I would sit and listen with my eyes closed everytime and not care

  • Could we perchance view the band from the front from time to time.

Otherwise, despite the excellent playing...very boring!

  • You've made 7 comments so I guess you have watched the video at least 7 times. Can't be that boring. In the Whit Friday bedlam you get as close as possible and just aim the camcorder. Delph is hectic as hell. Watch my clips from Dobcross, Lydgate, Lees, Grotton and previous years at Delph etc and they are usually facing the band. I'm not the BBC - just a punter having a bit of fun. I'll try to do better in 2008!!

  • Black Dyke by far the best Brass Band in the World.

BBBC might have the best soloists but that doesn't make the best brass band. It is like have a football team of David Beckham's. All razamataz and no real class. The reason Black Dyke are the best is because they live and breath what hey do on a daily basis. This band has won every competition over the last 150 years. Also a brass band had to be English as the American's have a totally different sound.

  • After further thought, I have realized that you are right. BBBC seems to be more for entertainment. I do hear the precision and attention to detail in this performance.

  • omg black dyke! you go! ive watched this video like 6 times now... damn its a nice song played VERY good, I can actually say perfect

    Way to go Black dyke!

  • As a North Seaton Colliery Band member in the 60's...........and a frequenter of the Bedlington Miners' Picnic............all I can say is.......this performance was sublime.........only surpassed by the composer George Allen...........well done Dyke.........I had tears in my eyes..........it was fantastic.......

    Hedley

  • Battle Creek best band in the world?????

    Come back in 175 years!!!

Black Dyke....form is temporary, class is permanent!

  • Hi all,

May I raise a Big Question!

Why don't we hear more of these most fine and excellent bands on 'YouTube'?

Sit-down concerts, excerpts from various contests, other notable performances etc (and not just 30 seconds-worth please)

I think the public should have more access on this site to listen to the finest Brass bands in the World doing their stuff, from beginning to end.

    What about it?

    Just my opinion.

    From:

    A Brass band enthusiast

  • No march is complete without the euphonium!

  • Black Dyke is certainly the more prestigious brass band in history.. but i've gotta say, i think that in our current day, the Brass Band of Battle Creek would have to be considered the current best in the world, simply because they are a gathering of pretty much the best brass players from around the world.. the reason the BBBC only plays exhibition concerts and not competition is because it just wouldn't be fair.

  • You are right in saying "they are a gathering". I'm not disputing their excellence but they aren't a regular band are they?. Pity they don't enter contests then we could judge. Playing exhibitions is all very well but where's the pressure? To suggest that they would beat the likes of Dyke and Fodens isn't right is it? Nobody actually knows. "It wouldn't be fair" is a real cop out!!

  • why do the BIG boys always have the small uniforms?!!! ha, ha Great playing and the best band in the world.!!!!

  • Simply Outstanding!

  • Ladies/Gentlemen,

What you are listening to on this particular video, is the finest Brass Band in the Entire World!!

    'Black Dyke Mills'

    Need I say more?

    Cheers

    John

  • I dunno . . The Brass Band of Battle Creek might give them a run for their money!

  • I agree, the BBBC is the greatest overall, most versatile and accomplished.

  • Haha actually, you can say less - they dropped the 'Mills' a few years ago!

  • Very entertaining. A class act to follow.

  • Having just finished a hard day's work, it is great to hear 'Black Dyke' again.

    Soothing.

Great piece (amongst numerous others) and played the same as when James Shepherd was principal cornetist...who is the greatest cornetist there has ever been!

    Just my opinion.

    Cheers,

    John

  • I've got to get their CD with Knight Templar! I cannot get enough of it.

  • You may be interested to know that this actual performance at Delph will be on a CD of Highlights from Whit Friday Marches 2007 which will be released later in the year.

Black Dyke have recorded Knight Templar a few times, most recently on a CD called Essential Dyke Volume 4. Visit the World of Brass website for more details, item number 21243.

  • Will Bob Rodgers be selling this at the Delph Band Club?

  • Don't know, you will need to ask him.

  • I've just bought the 2007 Whit Friday Delph CD and very good it is too. A nice mix of top bands and a few lesser names having a go. Great sound considering it's taken from a live outdoor event.I strongly recommend it.

  • Hi there. I was considering buying that CD, so you'd recommend it then?

  • Yes, it's well worth getting. Some great performances (including the one on this video), some not so good ones but it nicely capures the event. Plays for over 70 minutes and good sound too.

  • As a cornetist myslf, the cornet playing in this band is unchanged.

    Absolutely brilliant!

Not to say the other sections comprising the 'Best Brass Band in the World'

Perhaps biased, but cornet-wise I have also been astonished by the Bass section of Black Dyke.

    Pure depth of sound.

Please post more if you can.

    John

  • I play Euph, the Bb Bass sound is what makes a brass band special for me & this clip captures that sound so well. 2.57 to 3.00 makes the hairs on the back of the neck stand up.

  • Well Ive lived in Greenfield all my life and Brighouse always run em close--can tell its Brighouse from a mile away. Best day of the year but lets keep it secret!!

  • No disrespect to other great brass bands.

But for me, Black Dyke is the pinnacle (and always has been)

    Cheers

    John

  • Hardly any difference at all since when I first heard this piece over forty years ago when James Shepherd became the principal.

    Marvellous!

Could any poster give us more from Black Dyke?

    Would be much appreciated.

    Cheers.

  • Im sure George Allan would be proud

  • Cool stuff!!

  • I was nearly cryin' at this cause i have this on my iPod, was such a weird feeling to hear them playin' it live, and my fav march at that =D good to see a video of it up

  • I first heard this 'Knight Templar' piece in the early sixty's when James Shepherd was principal cornetist.

The sound is still the same!

    Brilliant!

    John

  • Me To They are the best and very clear sounding if played well. I think only Problem with Brass Bands is the Horn and Trombone section. Main reason for that is that they always try and pin the blame on the basses

  • they r VERY good i like their version of "the nightingale" by harrold moss i wish i could play nightingale as good as they do!

    super video btw!

  • Glad you like the videos. Are you a Delpher??

  • No, afraid not!

Originally from Oldham - then Royton - before moving south with the job in 1984.

We miss Saddleworth and the folk there - intending to stay to the end next year!

Accommodation is a problem though - the Bell is booked up already!

Anyroad up, Grimethorpe is playing at Basingstoke in November - so that will be a good night!

    Best Wishes

    Peter & Margaret Greaves

  • Thanks for your reply and the super videos

    Peter G

  • I was there most of the evening - but....

How on earth could I have missed both Black Dyke AND Fodens???

Can anyone tell me what time both of these bands played, please!!!

    Thanks

    Peter G

  • The last 3 bands on were Dyke, Fodens and Delph. Midnight or there abouts.

  • Especially like the very slight rubato (see intro into main strain, and end of trio)...that's what makes a really classy performance.

I heard them earlier that night, but this one is better.

  • I was standing just to the left and back a little from the person with the camera.. I didn't even notice the filming.

  • Note to Adjudicator from Bb Basses: - "Ave some of this". Quality stuff, lovely pedals from the basses (more please), wish I could have been there this year.

  • Glad some else thinks like i do! You can never got to much BB or can u? :S well i say no because i play 1 lol
