It is too poor for big powers to even want to bother (except China as North Korea does have minerals and China is insatiable for resources). In this case, while armies like U.S, Britain, Canada and Australia have long distance weapons on their planes; the N.Korean fighters are older models which do not have these. So all the attacking army would have to do is attack from a distance the North can't. Same for ground targets. Maybe they'd come after us but then we could escape. Planes are getting faster and more agile all the time
@InfiniteMushroom Once you've significantly weakened the army from the skies, ground units move in. We'd have the same advantage with tanks. Ours can attack from a distance theirs can't. Same with guns. Also, newer MBT tanks have extreme river crossing abilities and have infrared technology to fight at night. Again, N.Korea does not. Admittidly, using all these techniques probably isn't the most couragous way to beat them. But, its the most effective.

The US Forces over in South Korea contributed heavily to training the S.Korean Army up to their standards. Also, S.Korea has much the same eqipment as the US does...

Nope, too young to have served in Vietnam. America lost Vietnam at home due to it being the first war to receive the level of media attention that it did. As the war dragged on (hard to fight guerilla tactics in the jungle), more and more civilians fell victims to napalm, cross fire etc., leading to massive protests worldwide. Brute force doesn't work because even though you may win a battle, you end up losing hearts and minds.. Which is eventually what wins a war. That's how the Soviets lost.

The "failure" of today's high tech, western armies is that it is no longer acceptable to kill civilians and annihilate infrastructure. The North korean military has comparable tech to the Iraqis in the first gulf war and uses the same disciplined brute force tactics. The USAF could bomb North Korea for months and suffer little to no casualties (little to no AA effective on US aircraft). All troops can sit at the DMZ and wait until korean troops mount a suicide attack.

that was back in the 40s when civilians and civilian infrastructure was considered fair game, and leveling entire cities to the ground was part of war. warfare today, especially post-cold war is an entirely different ball game.. the way to win afghanistan (as with any war) is by winning hearts and minds. the Soviets lost in Afghanistan precisely because they slaughtered civilians and leveled the country to the ground. same strategy that lost us vietnam.

Nope, too young to have served in Vietnam. America lost Vietnam at home due to it being the first war to receive the level of media attention that it did. As the war dragged on (hard to fight guerilla tactics in the jungle), more and more civilians fell victims to napalm, cross fire etc., leading to massive protests worldwide. Brute force doesn't work because even though you may win a battle, you end up losing hearts and minds.. Which is eventually what wins a war. That's how the Soviets lost.

Prior to Vietnam and the soviet war in Afghanistan, the "superior" country won the war. The "failure" of today's high tech, western armies is that it is no longer acceptable to kill civilians and annihilate infrastructure. Rebels, Talibans and what not in Afghanistan have no inhibitions against slaughtering civilians as long as they kill an enemy troop or two in the process.. They're entirely different kinds of warfare and can hardly be compared.

Do you know the Difference between asymmetric and symmetric warfare? In 1991, 2001, and 2003. The US Military completely and utterly destroyed the Taliban and Iraqi army. Why? Because the US fought in a symmetric battle and Crushed the opposition. Now the US is having to fight an asymmetric war or guerilla war in Afghanistan. In a symmetric war North Korea would be crushed. While they may have a chance in an asymmetric war. But their asses would be kicked in a symmetric war.

negatory on that. We are losing in Iraq b/c of guerillla and occupational warfare. In a conventional war it would be no contest. The North korean military has comparable tech to the Iraqis in the first gulf war and uses the same disciplined brute force tactics. The USAF could bomb North Korea for months and suffer little to no casualties (little to no AA effective on US aircraft). All troops can sit at the DMZ and wait until korean troops mount a suicide attack.

It's bad because they have a completely state-run dictatorship mandating what work is done, what is produced, etc. History shows that has never worked very well. Second of all, North Korea has chosen the approach of complete self-reliance, which is simply not sustainable for such a small country. Kim Jong Il cuts NK off from the world to exert full control over his people. There isn't even have enough food to feed the vast majority of them. Starvation is a way of life for many there. It's cruel.

However, less than an hour of being acquainted with the USAAF would turn that around pretty convincingly. Note: Why did my people, the Chinese people have to bail these bastard's out? North Korea views itself as being entitled to hundreds of thousands of Chinese deaths. It believes that helping North Korea is a reward in itself, and that China should keep sending food and fuel no matter what. And y'know what? China will undoubtedly do just that, because it promotes "stability".
It bothers me that the USSR and China attacked the U.N.'s forces, and now Russia and China are permanent members of the Security Council. That's really messed up IMHO.
