  • "Planty Business" killed me

  • I always have the Cosmos-playlist on in the background when I play computer games. Carl Sagan's voice soothes me.

  • sometimes i masturebate with Cosmos in the background.....and im a straight guy

  • @InfinityWarriorInc It's Concerto for Mandolin & Strings in C Major from Vivaldi

  • I need a shit

  • Does anyone know what the song is from 2:45 to 3:30?

  • who could possibly be the (1) jackass that gave this a dislike rating??? Are you wacky???

  • @ajames95

Hey, maybe Sagan left behind a stash of weed that we could smoke! If only he were alive, you know, man? Imagine, just sitting in that garden, smoking joints with Sagan, and thinking about things, and thinking about thinking about things, and thinking about how we think about things, you know what I mean?!

  • @ThatGuyWithHippyHair Hell yeah, that would be great to be in the garden with that guy wouldn't it, he's my god, I love how he basically tells humanity they're idiots but in a nice way, dead's dead, deal with it...

  • "we got smarter.. and started to talk" now-a-days is the other way around: if you get smarter, you shut up and listen.

  • @alejita1679 yeah, especially if you're around the police :O)

  • Sagan and Dawkins freed me from the shackles of religion!!

  • @theseriouselephant thank God! haha. Same here.

  • @theseriouselephant good for you, it's always been a way of controlling people, always will be, opiate of the masses, religion is also for people who were born with silver spoons in their mouths..it's for people who feel rather than think...

  • @28october19731 Opium is the opiate of the masses and 24 hour news and Kim Kardashian and World of Warcraft and so on.

  • "to go about their planty business" LOL

  • @Eidolon234 like, I know whatcha mean man, hey coulda pass the bong dude?

  • @ajames95 yeah, don't fuck with that alcohol bullshit...that's human shit...all you need is the herb...it's straight out of nature :O)

  • 1 dislike. LOL either that was an accident, or someone linked a fundamentalist Christian to this video

  • "Its planty business" :D

  • Every scientific, peer reviewed study backs evolution. Would you ask your kids to conduct their own studies before accepting evolution?

We are well past the point of BELIEF in evolution, it's simply a matter of acceptance or denial. Presenting evolution as a scientific controversy is essentially lying to your child.

  • If the earth dies, we die. If we die, the earth survives.

  • @Jammed9000 Then maybe you should kill yourself. :)

  • @lalakid3

I was quoting a movie. (The Day the Earth Stood Still)

  • @Jammed9000 I love that movie!

  • Botany is an interesting subject. I love looking at plants, trees & flowers, plants provide us with oxygen, food, clothes & medicine, also many are aesthetic pleasing too.

  • 6:17 Indeed it is marvelous. We owe a great deal to the plants of this planet. Were it not for their farts, we might never have existed.

  • The Botanic Gardens in London look nicer than the Botanic Gardens in Glasgow.

  • royal botanical gardens *drools

I want to see that so bad!

  • @BlackJack9990 yea i tough it could be so too..and its probably that way..

  • @fermerwuvu " I tunked, there for I is" :-)

  • This science stuff is scary.

I'm gonna turn off my computer and get me some skoal and a Bible.

I'll suck on the skoal while I read my Bible and watch rasslin on tv with my horny sister.

    The South will rise again!

  • @Kamicolod The intellectual shallowness that your comment displays only proves why anything you propose is treated with suspicion.

  • @Kamicolod lmao!

  • Carl Sagan is a new hero.. Why am i just now finding out about him?

  • i believe in evolution..and im not the religious type..in fact im an atheist..but.our world is so elegantly designed..i mean..if there was %5 oxygen in the air we breath..we could die..if the sun was closer there would be no life on earth.or if it was further away..its so perfect!..when you look at a flower or a snowflake.or our dna..and you see how their gentle form.and lets not even talk about that every snowflake..or finger print is unique..it kinda makes me thin.if there is really a creator.

  • @fermerwuvu i agree with you that something as complex as the eye which requires every intricate component to work properly. this complex organism makes it very hard to aspire that evolution was the cause.

  • @aswatful stupid...there are MANY!!!! organisms on this planet that have much better vision than humans...get over yourselves...humanity ain't all that...take a look at what humans have done to the world...it's wrecked...it's a shithole, why can't you people see that the proof is in the pudding...the only organism(s) that I SEE on this planet fucking things up IS US!!!!!

  • @28october19731

hey!! the kind of fucking bacteria that first synthesize chlorophyll poisoned the atmosphere with oxygen billions years ago. Many species died intoxicated, a few adapted and survived and their successors thrived. But there was a big environmental catastrophe. Those knavish criminals!! Those idiot bacteria irresponsibly playing with nature!! just for laziness, they learned how to avoid the honest toil of energy generation, taking a scoundrel short path. Knaves !!

  • @28october19731 sadly youre absolutely right. the mass majority of the human race today are a plague on the earth. stumbling about completely blind, fragile, hollow, and purposeless shells. A mockery of the gift of life and consciousness. our society functions backwards to the primal and constant laws of nature and the universe itself. If we dont make it change ourselves, sooner or later the planet will cleanse itself and begin anew. It can only bear so much corruption.

  • @corrosivetrip To quote Mr Dickens

'Man,' said the Ghost, 'if man you be in your heart and not adamant, forbear that wicked cant until you have discovered what the surplus is, and where it is. Will you decide what men shall live, what men shall die? It may be, that in the sight of Heaven, you are more worthless and less fit to live than millions like this poor man's child. Oh God! to hear the insect on the leaf pronouncing on the too much life among his hungry brothers in the dust!'"

  • @corrosivetrip you're great...purposeless shells :O) I have to tell you, you made me laugh my ass off, the world now is fucking pathetic, I mean thus far in history, human history seems to have always been pretty disgusting but I mean I think it's becoming out of hand...

  • @fermerwuvu The atmosphere became that way, it was not always that way. It would be different if the Earth`s atmosphere and everything about the Earth had always been perfect for us from the very beginning. But this is not the case. Humans are one of many dominant species to have existed on this planet at one time or another. Other creatures have dominated the earth and thrived here in conditions that seemed custom-fitted for them, only to be wiped out by some disaster or massive change.

  • @fermerwuvu you have to "really" think about things...there's been many instances in the Earth's history where life very nearly went extinct...kinda like how humanity is going very rapidly towards extinction/destruction, take a look around at the planet in 2011, it's an utter shithole, how about like how the Jews were put into ovens in WW2, was that done by a designer :O) or how white pigs took all the Indian lands just because they had guns...WAKE UP!!!!! Remember it's been BILLIONS of yrs.

  • I'm an American. I watched Cosmos twice in school; once in late elementary, and again in junior high. This episode in particular was my first exposure to evolution and blew my mind. The schools I attended were Catholic and Christian.

As an adult, I've heard all the criticisms of how children are kept "ignorant" by religion, and religious schools. But I've encountered far more adults who attended public schools that have no idea who Carl Sagan is or what artificial and natural selection are.

  • @Rachielizaboo no surprise at all...you get what you pay for...the American school system in general be it religious or public is an utter fucking joke...that's why the US has rapidly become a banana republic dummy...

  • God was the first scientist haha

  • @GreatOutDoorz

Scientists have to exist to do science.

  • Hey. What's wrong with being a monkey, bro? They're cool as hell, man. I only wish I looked more like a bad ass mandrill, rather than a Chimp.

  • Etheric barrier = non- existant occult conspiracy theorist rubbish Ill stick to science thanks lol

  • noone said you are a monkey but its scientific fact that modern primates and man have a common ancestory. Something Il lnever understand about people like you is how you could possibly think that your opinions hold any weight in the face of facts. Find some proof of what youre saying or shutup youre part of the problem holding mankind back from understanding our place in the universe.

  • I ARE NOT MONKEY BRO!

  • Strange, You have the English of a monkey.

  • FACE!! XD

  • @Stimpeeey I like it...I know...there's so many savage fucks in the world who can hardly even fucking talk...and evolution is a theory...wrong!

  • beautiful music.

  • baboon

  • "we have a natural affinity for trees"

As did our ancestors 8.2 light years away :)

  • I remember watching Carl 30 years ago and was blown away by how clear he made sense of the world and the "COSMOS" all his critics are but free loaders, its funny how he knew so much before science caught up.

Some say he was just an entertainer, perhaps he was, but he was good at what he did and forgot more than most people will ever know!

  • Heh..I love how all the angry atheists are belittling those who don't share their beliefs on a Carl Sagan video. I wonder if he would agree with their tactics or use patience and courtesy to convey his message?

  • @GeraldWatercrest You mean the ones that say evolution didn't happen? Patience only takes you so far.

  • I agree that we evolved as depicted in the video. ( There is a new genetic mutation where lots of humans leave stupid comments on youtube as if they never went to school, though. )

  • 40% of Americans don't believe in evolution hahahaha fucking inbred dumb Christian morons...... most Americans are

really cool though, thank fuck for the other 60% :)

  • fuck yeah you guys get hell bad press overseas, and i hated you all until i went there. You are mostly pretty cool. haha. same as anywhere.

  • People are stupid everywhere. America just has the media influence that means we hear about their stupid people. Australian stupid people's stupidity (and there is a lot) mostly stays in the country.

  • if it wasnt for those 40% the remaining 60% would seem dull. also, if it wasnt for the 40%, the 60% wudnt have had a basis to change from archaic ways of life...

  • if it wasnt for the 40% the rest 60% would have colonised mars by now

    just my theory though

  • Mars? Such a sad subject to address. As Sagan himself stated in 'Blues for a Red Planet', we've only hit the tip of the marsberg. There's a lot we do not know about the nature of the inner planets still.

For starters, human beings are not allowed to venture a few klicks past the moon's orbit. Etheric barrier wot wot.

  • "For starters, human beings are not allowed to venture a few klicks past the moon's orbit. Etheric barrier wot wot. "

    the Etheric what?

  • Oh, there are some members in our space program who feel humankind isn't physically able to reach Mars because of something telling they found on our Moon during the Apollo program. It's dubious and open to speculation, but supposedly there are limits, whether natural or artificial, to accessing space about 1.6 light seconds past Earth.

  • some members?

    something telling?

    dubious ?

    supposedly?

    limits?

...i dont even want to know

  • Agreed, there's a lot of fusion of science fiction with science fact these days. Chalk it up to Sagan to keep things illuminated properly. :)

  • not sure about that we've already sent numerous rovers and probes to Mars. A manned expedition to Mars would take the same amount of time only require a larger payload a ECCLS sub-system and a more power EPS subsystem to support the power demands of EECLS system. The only limiting factor your space program found is probably funding which has been and still is killing manned space flight.

  • @leka1622

Money has more than just the space program in a state of paralysis ;)

  • It's statements like that, that hold back our species. Fuck off you ignorant prick.

  • -4?...

  • After seeing this program I might actually visit the outdoors.

  • it's pretty great, especially if your'e fucked up

  • @OniLunchbox Don't do it! That's what killed the dinosaurs.

  • @OniLunchbox with gas @ like $4.00/gal. you certainly won't be going there often...fucking oil pigs...can't even go out to the fucking forests much anymore...

  • What a beautiful hypothesis!! Just a hypothesis. Hopefully many more will come along. After all what is the frontal lobe for, if not to help us imagine?

  • You must not be American, because I think it embarassing. Ten year old kids who still wrestle w/ this truth will not become the scientists of the future.

  • Oh that's nonsense.

  • @hdtwoodsman You are very wrong my friend.

  • @hdtwoodsman

If you don't have conflict or a natural questioning of things, if you obey the laws then you never develop a natural curiosity witch is essential for science.

  • @m0bus Natural questioning of things is GREAT; there are thousands of debates w/in evolutionary science. Questioning the truth of evolution is wasting all of our time and hurting our science.

  • @hdtwoodsman

I hope my children doubt evolution, then find out for themselves that it is real. What really hurts science is 'religion vs science' or 'science vs religion' depending what side of the fence your standing on.

  • @hdtwoodsman I think you must be American, because stupidity like that often comes from the South.

  • @superspanks I am an American and there is nothing more embarrassing than the numbers of Americans who deny the fact of evolution. It hinders our progress as a country and as a planet.

  • @superspanks I just read your response. I come from little Rhody, man... where Roger Williams cut a fair deal w/ the Indians. Doesn't have much to do w/ evolution, but it shows we Ocean Staters aren't DUMB.

  • @hdtwoodsman I'd recommend you go out and start gathering some evidence if you wish to state such a case as true.

  • @hdtwoodsman very true, the scientists of the future (for that matter a bunch of other important occupations as well), certainly will not be coming out of the US, we're rapidly (in fact already have) become a banana republic...seems to me to be a no brainer...how could evolution not have possibly happened? Why is it that humans, who have made the world so fucking miserable and wrecked damn near everything including life itself, still think it's all about them???

  • How lovely trees are...they're great and beautiful machines...nature is so neat...it's really hard to believe humans actually evolved...my dad used to say that he thought human evolution was an incredible accident...my dad was a fucking genius...most of the world population thinks this is all done by a designer...in fact it's an accident...

  • A 2009 Darwin Day US poll: 39% say they 'believe in the theory of evolution'

  • If you want to place evolution in the same category with gravity, I'm cool w/ that.

Do you think the 40+% of Americans who deny evolution are willing to do the same?

  • I don't believe that 40% of Americans deny evolution. I think they believe in evolution but they also believe that someone rather and something began the process in the first place.

  • It doesn't matter if they don't

  • I recently read an interesting distinction: evolution is a fact; Natural Selection is a theory.

  • That is true, but make no mistake about scientific theories. It is strong. Gravity is still a theory.

  • its true that gravity is a theory why if you drop a rock couple of times some time it wont drop :Þ

  • It's obvious that it's real but the only proof of it is observation and math.

Just like theories of the universe. The only proof is observation and math.

    :) Fact.

  • We are definitely still evolving. We're getting taller and sexier, but not smarter. Know why? Because people mate will tall, sexy people.

  • Actually, intelligence is looked upon favorably when choosing a mate too. It's just that idiots are breeding at a much higher rate, and they're not doing it because they're sexier or taller, they're doing it because they like having sex, with no regards to the consequences,

Have a look around where you live and then tell me if the people with all the kids are taller or sexier than everybody else.

Your idea is good in theory but in society in the way it is today it can hardly be applied.

  • We didnt stop evolving, obviosly we can't see drastic physical changes over a period of hundreds or thousands of years, a noticeable change takes HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of years, possibly millions

  • Our consciousness has drastically changed the way we are evolving. For example rather than choosing a mate based on ability alone one may choose a mate based on sympathy or purely on beauty. Consciousness has also opened many routes of survival. Rather than shear speed or quick cunning being the surest route to success, creativity, communication, and logic have become modes of survival. The ease with which our needs are met in the machine era has further erased this former pastern of life.

  • well said, sirnewt

  • @SirNewt actually beauty (which is in fact not in the eyes of the beholder as ugly people like to fool themselves and each other) has a lot to do with evolutionary success

  • SirNewt is quite right. a friend asked me this question once. he seemed to think that we should be evovling into some form Xmen comic books... mind reading abilitys and so on. trying correct someone on such a stupid assumption is not easy. but the way i see it, is that if we do change in the 1000s, if not millions, of years to come, it will be very basic things. its just down to how people select there partners, so maybe people will be more atractive, a bit taller or have bigger dicks. =P

  • Also, where simpler animals had to "wait" to adapt through generations of mutations (thicker fur), etc, we have a brain that can simply think of ways around the process... in a sense, wearing clothes, driving (technology in general) slowed our evolutionary progress down to a crawl... my opinion I suppose...

  • Any characteristic which would essentialy prevent the death of an organism, and thus allow it to reproduce - these would be passed on. This can lead a species down many paths. Hominids (what I think you mean by cavemen), of which we alone remain, relied on intelligence to survive - complex brains were our favoured trait: that which allowed us to survive. Therefore the intelligent mated with the intelligent, we are the result.

  • In certain areas we can still see human evolution. Look at the average Professional athlete only 35 years ago. Especially when children are now being bred for athletics. It's a small example but telling.

  • if you dont want it to man. We are getting taller, smarter, stronger, and we are learning to make it happen at an alarming rate. We'll never have three legs because it's unnecessary, But we have learned to breed ourselves in interesting, and perhaps accidental ways. Look up trans-humanism. It's an interesting concept, that's all. I dont argue with people i just thought i'd bring up something interesting to you but i guess you like to argue

  • That statment shows how ignorant you are of evolution

  • @twistedjackels Moron.

  • Comment removed

  • we stopped evolving because we longer let our environment dictate who lives and dies as much as we did before...instead, we make the environment conform to our desires, ending natural seletion in humans

  • Strange and fascinating idea.

    ...Quite possible

  • err.. not quite - we're changing the selection pressures.

  • Who said we stopped evolving?

  • @twistedjackels

    huh?

  • Why are you even trying to issue your little arguments on a video that you KNOW is being viewed by those who will disagree with you?

Unless you enjoy being shunned and razzed, I suggest you stop posting on this video now. Go watch your own videos (perhaps the ones that attempt to refute evolution by means of opening a jar of peanut butter or how a banana is shaped) and stop impinging on ours.

  • Not really there is genetic immunities and the ever evolving brain for greater capacity there is he skin amino producers ways the body can survive how well we do a job and ever able adaptability aswell as an evolutionary nature of us and with that there is still more things even i cant name

  • so its you against the scientific community

place your bets ladies and gentlemen

  • "Hey, howcome we stopped evovling? i mean we've been like this now for millions oh yrs. i think or thousands? \ ///// "

No real environmental pressures deciding who lives and breeds, and who doesn't.

The fattest, laziest, stupidest person can still breed in today's world, whereas in the wild ... they would've died.

We are still evolving, just in a different way because of the nature of the way we live life now, and our manufactured environment.

  • @twistedjackels evolving doesnt always mean that your body will look different..our brains evolved..and well our bodies too..in ways that we cant see..like..our bodies got a stronger immune system by the ages..the common cold is not that deadly anymore..as it was 500-1000 years ago..plus..we evolve spiritually too..dont forget about that..

  • @fermerwuvu We evolved the ability to think about superfluous things that do not concern our daily survival, you mean ;)

  • @twistedjackels

    We have not stopped evolving.

  • I've heard far more detailed explanations of evolution but what was just shown is why I have such a hard time accepting the theory. Interesting video but I disagree with a few things in it.

  • what is hard to accept about it? No offense, but disputing how it happened is certainly a valid position, but to think that it didn't happen is either a form of ignorance or denial. The evidence of evolution is overwhelming. It's a Theory because it is explaining facts not because it is an idea. It is past the status of hypothesis. what exactly do you disagree with?

  • I've had to explain this to alot of peoples and rather do it through comments. I you or anyone else wants to know then private message me.

  • I know what you're saying, I mean it is just a theory. Another theory I've had trouble with is the earth going around the sun. I mean honestly, its just a theory and everyday the sun goes up and down, I see no proof myself that the earth is moving, just fancy computer animation...

  • At first I thought you were being serious based on the perception I have of most youtube commentors, then I saw you're other comment above. I think part of the problem is the argument that it is "just a theory". These uninformed morons need to educate themselves on what exactly a theory is and what it takes for one to be sound and accepted by the larger scientific communtity.

  • I couldnt agree more... thought a little sarcasm was needed... lol

  • Cosmos is great!! Thanks for posting these and keep 'em coming!!!!!!!!

  • Absaloutly brilliant.

  • huh?

  • LOL

  • "to go about its planty business"

  • five stars

  • Great video. Thanks for sharing the series! I love the Vivaldi background music, btw! I wonder if Sagan had an affinity for his music in particular?

  • Considering that, classical music is so prevelant throughout the series, I'd say probably. Cosmos really is Sagan's baby.

  • Carl Sagan's Cosmos is so elegant yet he makes everything seem so simple. It's truly a beautiful work.
