@28october19731 sadly youre absolutely right. the mass majority of the human race today are a plague on the earth. stumbling about completely blind, fragile, hollow, and purposeless shells. A mockery of the gift of life and consciousness. our society functions backwards to the primal and constant laws of nature and the universe itself. If we dont make it change ourselves, sooner or later the planet will cleanse itself and begin anew. It can only bear so much corruption.

Oh God! to hear the insect on the leaf pronouncing on the too much life among his hungry brothers in the dust!'"
@corrosivetrip you're great...purposeless shells :O) I have to tell you, you made me laugh my ass off, the world now is fucking pathetic, I mean thus far in history, human history seems to have always been pretty disgusting but I mean I think it's becoming out of hand...
@fermerwuvu The atmosphere became that way, it was not always that way. It would be different if the Earth`s atmosphere and everything about the Earth had always been perfect for us from the very beginning. But this is not the case. Humans are one of many dominant species to have existed on this planet at one time or another. Other creatures have dominated the earth and thrived here in conditions that seemed custom-fitted for them, only to be wiped out by some disaster or massive change.
@fermerwuvu you have to "really" think about things...there's been many instances in the Earth's history where life very nearly went extinct...kinda like how humanity is going very rapidly towards extinction/destruction, take a look around at the planet in 2011, it's an utter shithole, how about like how the Jews were put into ovens in WW2, was that done by a designer :O) or how white pigs took all the Indian lands just because they had guns...WAKE UP!!!!! Remember it's been BILLIONS of yrs.
I'm an American. I watched Cosmos twice in school; once in late elementary, and again in junior high. This episode in particular was my first exposure to evolution and blew my mind. The schools I attended were Catholic and Christian.

@Rachielizaboo no surprise at all...you get what you pay for...the American school system in general be it religious or public is an utter fucking joke...that's why the US has rapidly become a banana republic dummy...

What a beautiful hypothesis!! Just a hypothesis. Hopefully many more will come along. After all what is the frontal lobe for, if not to help us imagine?
You must not be American, because I think it embarassing. Ten year old kids who still wrestle w/ this truth will not become the scientists of the future.
If you don't have conflict or a natural questioning of things, if you obey the laws then you never develop a natural curiosity witch is essential for science.
@m0bus Natural questioning of things is GREAT; there are thousands of debates w/in evolutionary science. Questioning the truth of evolution is wasting all of our time and hurting our science.
I hope my children doubt evolution, then find out for themselves that it is real. What really hurts science is 'religion vs science' or 'science vs religion' depending what side of the fence your standing on.
@superspanks I am an American and there is nothing more embarrassing than the numbers of Americans who deny the fact of evolution. It hinders our progress as a country and as a planet.
@superspanks I just read your response. I come from little Rhody, man... where Roger Williams cut a fair deal w/ the Indians. Doesn't have much to do w/ evolution, but it shows we Ocean Staters aren't DUMB.
@hdtwoodsman very true, the scientists of the future (for that matter a bunch of other important occupations as well), certainly will not be coming out of the US, we're rapidly (in fact already have) become a banana republic...seems to me to be a no brainer...how could evolution not have possibly happened? Why is it that humans, who have made the world so fucking miserable and wrecked damn near everything including life itself, still think it's all about them???
How lovely trees are...they're great and beautiful machines...nature is so neat...it's really hard to believe humans actually evolved...my dad used to say that he thought human evolution was an incredible accident...my dad was a fucking genius...most of the world population thinks this is all done by a designer...in fact it's an accident...
I don't believe that 40% of Americans deny evolution. I think they believe in evolution but they also believe that someone rather and something began the process in the first place.
Actually, intelligence is looked upon favorably when choosing a mate too. It's just that idiots are breeding at a much higher rate, and they're not doing it because they're sexier or taller, they're doing it because they like having sex, with no regards to the consequences,
Have a look around where you live and then tell me if the people with all the kids are taller or sexier than everybody else.
Your idea is good in theory but in society in the way it is today it can hardly be applied.
We didnt stop evolving, obviosly we can't see drastic physical changes over a period of hundreds or thousands of years, a noticeable change takes HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of years, possibly millions
Our consciousness has drastically changed the way we are evolving. For example rather than choosing a mate based on ability alone one may choose a mate based on sympathy or purely on beauty. Consciousness has also opened many routes of survival. Rather than shear speed or quick cunning being the surest route to success, creativity, communication, and logic have become modes of survival. The ease with which our needs are met in the machine era has further erased this former pastern of life.
@SirNewt actually beauty (which is in fact not in the eyes of the beholder as ugly people like to fool themselves and each other) has a lot to do with evolutionary success
SirNewt is quite right. a friend asked me this question once. he seemed to think that we should be evovling into some form Xmen comic books... mind reading abilitys and so on. trying correct someone on such a stupid assumption is not easy. but the way i see it, is that if we do change in the 1000s, if not millions, of years to come, it will be very basic things. its just down to how people select there partners, so maybe people will be more atractive, a bit taller or have bigger dicks. =P
Also, where simpler animals had to "wait" to adapt through generations of mutations (thicker fur), etc, we have a brain that can simply think of ways around the process... in a sense, wearing clothes, driving (technology in general) slowed our evolutionary progress down to a crawl... my opinion I suppose...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I get what you guys are saying. But how did we evolve from reptiles to apes. are we goin to be the same we are in like 1000 years or are we goin to have three legs or something. And if we came from the cave men/reptiles, who did the cavemen have sex with to make a normal looking human? is that what you guys are going on about? Explain.
Any characteristic which would essentialy prevent the death of an organism, and thus allow it to reproduce - these would be passed on. This can lead a species down many paths. Hominids (what I think you mean by cavemen), of which we alone remain, relied on intelligence to survive - complex brains were our favoured trait: that which allowed us to survive. Therefore the intelligent mated with the intelligent, we are the result.
In certain areas we can still see human evolution. Look at the average Professional athlete only 35 years ago. Especially when children are now being bred for athletics. It's a small example but telling.
if you dont want it to man. We are getting taller, smarter, stronger, and we are learning to make it happen at an alarming rate. We'll never have three legs because it's unnecessary, But we have learned to breed ourselves in interesting, and perhaps accidental ways. Look up trans-humanism. It's an interesting concept, that's all. I dont argue with people i just thought i'd bring up something interesting to you but i guess you like to argue
we stopped evolving because we longer let our environment dictate who lives and dies as much as we did before...instead, we make the environment conform to our desires, ending natural seletion in humans
Why are you even trying to issue your little arguments on a video that you KNOW is being viewed by those who will disagree with you?
Unless you enjoy being shunned and razzed, I suggest you stop posting on this video now. Go watch your own videos (perhaps the ones that attempt to refute evolution by means of opening a jar of peanut butter or how a banana is shaped) and stop impinging on ours.
Not really there is genetic immunities and the ever evolving brain for greater capacity there is he skin amino producers ways the body can survive how well we do a job and ever able adaptability aswell as an evolutionary nature of us and with that there is still more things even i cant name
@twistedjackels evolving doesnt always mean that your body will look different..our brains evolved..and well our bodies too..in ways that we cant see..like..our bodies got a stronger immune system by the ages..the common cold is not that deadly anymore..as it was 500-1000 years ago..plus..we evolve spiritually too..dont forget about that..
I've heard far more detailed explanations of evolution but what was just shown is why I have such a hard time accepting the theory. Interesting video but I disagree with a few things in it.
what is hard to accept about it? No offense, but disputing how it happened is certainly a valid position, but to think that it didn't happen is either a form of ignorance or denial. The evidence of evolution is overwhelming. It's a Theory because it is explaining facts not because it is an idea. It is past the status of hypothesis. what exactly do you disagree with?
I know what you're saying, I mean it is just a theory. Another theory I've had trouble with is the earth going around the sun. I mean honestly, its just a theory and everyday the sun goes up and down, I see no proof myself that the earth is moving, just fancy computer animation...
At first I thought you were being serious based on the perception I have of most youtube commentors, then I saw you're other comment above. I think part of the problem is the argument that it is "just a theory". These uninformed morons need to educate themselves on what exactly a theory is and what it takes for one to be sound and accepted by the larger scientific communtity.

@hdtwoodsman I think you must be American, because stupidity like that often comes from the South.
superspanks 1 year ago 2
@superspanks I am an American and there is nothing more embarrassing than the numbers of Americans who deny the fact of evolution. It hinders our progress as a country and as a planet.
hdtwoodsman 1 year ago 24
@superspanks I just read your response. I come from little Rhody, man... where Roger Williams cut a fair deal w/ the Indians. Doesn't have much to do w/ evolution, but it shows we Ocean Staters aren't DUMB.
hdtwoodsman 2 months ago
@hdtwoodsman I'd recommend you go out and start gathering some evidence if you wish to state such a case as true.
SilenceOfTheLozenge 11 months ago
@hdtwoodsman very true, the scientists of the future (for that matter a bunch of other important occupations as well), certainly will not be coming out of the US, we're rapidly (in fact already have) become a banana republic...seems to me to be a no brainer...how could evolution not have possibly happened? Why is it that humans, who have made the world so fucking miserable and wrecked damn near everything including life itself, still think it's all about them???
28october19731 6 months ago
How lovely trees are...they're great and beautiful machines...nature is so neat...it's really hard to believe humans actually evolved...my dad used to say that he thought human evolution was an incredible accident...my dad was a fucking genius...most of the world population thinks this is all done by a designer...in fact it's an accident...

A 2009 Darwin Day US poll: 39% say they 'believe in the theory of evolution'
hdtwoodsman 2 years ago
If you want to place evolution in the same category with gravity, I'm cool w/ that.
Do you think the 40+% of Americans who deny evolution are willing to do the same?
hdtwoodsman 2 years ago
I don't believe that 40% of Americans deny evolution. I think they believe in evolution but they also believe that someone rather and something began the process in the first place.

I recently read an interesting distinction: evolution is a fact; Natural Selection is a theory.
hdtwoodsman 2 years ago
That is true, but make no mistake about scientific theories. It is strong. Gravity is still a theory.
Pangaway 2 years ago
its true that gravity is a theory why if you drop a rock couple of times some time it wont drop :Þ

It's obvious that it's real but the only proof of it is observation and math.
Just like theories of the universe. The only proof is observation and math.
:) Fact.

We are definitely still evolving. We're getting taller and sexier, but not smarter. Know why? Because people mate will tall, sexy people.
Digeridude 2 years ago
Actually, intelligence is looked upon favorably when choosing a mate too. It's just that idiots are breeding at a much higher rate, and they're not doing it because they're sexier or taller, they're doing it because they like having sex, with no regards to the consequences,
Have a look around where you live and then tell me if the people with all the kids are taller or sexier than everybody else.
Your idea is good in theory but in society in the way it is today it can hardly be applied.
Skindoggiedog 2 years ago 4
We didnt stop evolving, obviosly we can't see drastic physical changes over a period of hundreds or thousands of years, a noticeable change takes HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of years, possibly millions

twistedjackels 3 years ago
Our consciousness has drastically changed the way we are evolving. For example rather than choosing a mate based on ability alone one may choose a mate based on sympathy or purely on beauty. Consciousness has also opened many routes of survival. Rather than shear speed or quick cunning being the surest route to success, creativity, communication, and logic have become modes of survival. The ease with which our needs are met in the machine era has further erased this former pastern of life.

commandernetpirate 3 years ago 2
@SirNewt actually beauty (which is in fact not in the eyes of the beholder as ugly people like to fool themselves and each other) has a lot to do with evolutionary success
sondano 1 year ago
SirNewt is quite right. a friend asked me this question once. he seemed to think that we should be evovling into some form Xmen comic books... mind reading abilitys and so on. trying correct someone on such a stupid assumption is not easy. but the way i see it, is that if we do change in the 1000s, if not millions, of years to come, it will be very basic things. its just down to how people select there partners, so maybe people will be more atractive, a bit taller or have bigger dicks. =P
Maloclips 3 years ago 5
Also, where simpler animals had to "wait" to adapt through generations of mutations (thicker fur), etc, we have a brain that can simply think of ways around the process... in a sense, wearing clothes, driving (technology in general) slowed our evolutionary progress down to a crawl... my opinion I suppose...

Explain.
twistedjackels 2 years ago
Any characteristic which would essentialy prevent the death of an organism, and thus allow it to reproduce - these would be passed on. This can lead a species down many paths. Hominids (what I think you mean by cavemen), of which we alone remain, relied on intelligence to survive - complex brains were our favoured trait: that which allowed us to survive. Therefore the intelligent mated with the intelligent, we are the result.

In certain areas we can still see human evolution. Look at the average Professional athlete only 35 years ago. Especially when children are now being bred for athletics. It's a small example but telling.

twistedjackels 2 years ago
if you dont want it to man.

TheBandkanon 2 years ago 6
Not really there is genetic immunities and the ever evolving brain for greater capacity there is he skin amino producers ways the body can survive how well we do a job and ever able adaptability aswell as an evolutionary nature of us and with that there is still more things even i cant name

"Hey, howcome we stopped evovling? i mean we've been like this now for millions oh yrs. i think or thousands? \ ///// "
No real environmental pressures deciding who lives and breeds, and who doesn't.
The fattest, laziest, stupidest person can still breed in today's world, whereas in the wild ... they would've died.
We are still evolving, just in a different way because of the nature of the way we live life now, and our manufactured environment.
Skindoggiedog 2 years ago 6
@twistedjackels evolving doesnt always mean that your body will look different..our brains evolved..and well our bodies too..in ways that we cant see..like..our bodies got a stronger immune system by the ages..the common cold is not that deadly anymore..as it was 500-1000 years ago..plus..we evolve spiritually too..dont forget about that..

I've heard far more detailed explanations of evolution but what was just shown is why I have such a hard time accepting the theory. Interesting video but I disagree with a few things in it.
RJL738 3 years ago
what is hard to accept about it? No offense, but disputing how it happened is certainly a valid position, but to think that it didn't happen is either a form of ignorance or denial. The evidence of evolution is overwhelming. It's a Theory because it is explaining facts not because it is an idea. It is past the status of hypothesis. what exactly do you disagree with?
redscooby 3 years ago
I've had to explain this to alot of peoples and rather do it through comments. I you or anyone else wants to know then private message me.
RJL738 3 years ago
I know what you're saying, I mean it is just a theory. Another theory I've had trouble with is the earth going around the sun. I mean honestly, its just a theory and everyday the sun goes up and down, I see no proof myself that the earth is moving, just fancy computer animation...
Beefbonger 3 years ago 4
At first I thought you were being serious based on the perception I have of most youtube commentors, then I saw you're other comment above. I think part of the problem is the argument that it is "just a theory". These uninformed morons need to educate themselves on what exactly a theory is and what it takes for one to be sound and accepted by the larger scientific communtity.

Considering that, classical music is so prevelant throughout the series, I'd say probably. Cosmos really is Sagan's baby.
