  • Yes wireless workes with the latest Xubuntu, ubuntu, kubuntu, and all variants of Mint. the function keys work fine too.The camera seems to be a problem for me,

  • does the wireless work with xubuntu?

  • I want this so bad! It would be perfect for school.

  • Yea my parents are getting me one for collage.

Although if you can wait Dell will be bringing there competitor out for £99 although they are making a lot of scarifieses to get it to the pre £100 price point like no webcam only 196MB or RAM only 1GB of space and no webcam and MAYBE no wireless.

  • Oh you are making a collage? Nice.

  • Sorry. You now what I mean like school but for bigger kids. Dam this firefox spell checker :). I would never put an Eeepc in a collage (that would be very expensive art project).

  • Anyone knows a store in Dallas that has it? I've googled a lot, but only found online stores. Even Target&Costco are selling Asus EEE only online :(

  • Sadly to say, I noticed XP boot was faster (20 secs) than Xubuntu. Maybe becasue Xubuntu was in a SD card? Maybe this card is slower than its main "hard disk" (flash).

  • Probably because Antivirus has not been installed. Plus in 6 months, XP will get slower and slower.

  • no I'm sorry to say windows all most always appears to boot faster than linux.

But that's because they cheat if you notice when you boot up XP you then have to wait before you can actually load most programs this is because the operating system is still loading they just want to make it look like there OS loads fastest. I hope this makes sense.

  • Yes, i have to agree. It´s right that it appears so. But when you watch window´s hard drive activity after the desktop has been loaded you see that it boot´s slower than linux. In linux you can see the desktop when all services allready has been startet. For exaple if you try to launch firefox in windows directly after startup it takes 5 times longer as usualy, because half of the services hasn´t been loaded already, but in linux it´s as fast as it is to any other time.

  • No, windows did not cheat. Windows boot-up process is the way all OS should be running. Some services are core to the OS while others are only essential to a particular user. This is one of the reasons why I love Windows (except Vista).

  • Everyone has their preference. I prefer everything to be loaded so I know when my computer is up I can do what I want without it crashing. I can sort of see why someone might want only certain parts of the system to be loaded first. But that's not why Mico$oft did it they did this so that when you boot up their system next to a competitor, theirs will 'appear' load faster. As long as people know the 'real' boot times are the same.

  • it's not a matter of cheating. With windows, smaller parts of the operating system are communicating with each other, which means some parts load faster (hybrid kernel). Linux, however, loads the whole kernel at once (monolithic kernel). Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but since i'm running out of available characters, i'll leave it here.

  • Not exactly true, if you make linux load like windows they will appear to boot at the same time. BTW the way to do that is you load your drivers a couple modules needed for X turn on parallel service loading (experimental ;)) dump into runtime 5 with your login manager ASAP then continue to load the services in the background of the login manager. It has its downside, such as if a service fails you may not know about it right away but you have to give and take.

  • how do u select between the 2 os?

  • on ur boot menu, u like wen u start a pc there is one of the "F" keys u press and ur boot menu will come up and u choose a Os

  • Ok, thx u

  • hell yea u r welcome

  • they are not made for you

  • indeed :-/

  • hi brad! i want to buy the eee as a second laptop and ultra portable. was wondering how easy it is to install xp on it? how do u install without an optical drive? any hacking required? also, how is the pre-installed os? is it good? does xp run fast? thanks!

  • It's easiest to install Windows with a CD drive, but you can do it with a flash drive too. You can find instructions at the EeeUser Wiki. XP runs okay on a stock unit, but I've upgraded my RAM to 2GB and now it runs like a dream.

The pre-installed OS boots faster than Windows, but you have to jump through some hoops if you want to install extra programs.

  • sweet! i just came back from the store. I went to see the eee pc. I am quite impressed. its perfectly sized. However, i think it will take me a little while getting used to the keyboard... I think i will pick up one soon! thanks for the help and once again, great video!

  • I would like to purchase one, but haven't seen a single store with the Asus EEE. Only online stores. I know Costco&Target have it..but only for online buying. I am in Dallas,TX. Do you know any store? Thanks!

  • u work for downloadsquad? i saw another review on youtube from downloadsquad! thats awesome man! thats the 1st rss feed i read everyday! :-) do you work freelance? is it fun working for them?

  • Yeah, I'm kind of fond of Download Squad too, but they pay me to say that. :) I did a two part review of the Eee PC interface for DLS before starting up my own page at Eee Site dot Net.

  • haha! nice! yeah... i checked out your eee site! pretty neat! ive bookmarked it so that i can use it when i get the eee pc... is blogging your main job or do you do something else and blog during your free time? you think you could hook me up to blog with you all? lol! id love to tho! btw, how do you install windows apps on the eee once u load up xp? cuz it dusnt hav an optical drive!

  • Sorry, I'm just wondering, do you have the 2GB flash drive, or the 4GB-16 GB HD? I was just thinking If I bought a 2 GB model, if I would be able to install XP with ease?

    EMZ=]

  • It'll fit on a 2GB disk, but you'll want to disable the page file. And it'll fit a lot better if you use nlite to shrink your installation disc first. I happen to be running it on a 4GB model, but the OS and programs eat up just under 2GB leaving some room for storage.

  • Thanks.

    EMZ=]

  • does it use itunes and when first buy one and turn it on doesnt it go the easy steps thing

  • which button i need to push at the boot for load xubuntu???

  • can i ask why you underclocked your cpu, i would of thought you would need as much power as you can get out of it.

  • I didn't. Asus did. The Eee PC comes with a 900MHz CPU that runs at 630MHz. If you search around you can find a BIOS update or software hack that will let you run it at 900MHz, but it honestly performs pretty well at 630MHz, especially if you upgrade the RAM.

  • When you're on xubuntu, what happens if you remove the sd card... I mean can you use a seperate sd card to store data while operating on xubuntu or you absolutly have to use a usb key (pendrive)...?

    Thx!

  • Well, you can install Xubuntu to the main memory if you want. But if it's installed to an SD card, removing the card would be kind of like removing your computer's hard drive. In other words, it'll stop working and possibly corrupt some data.

  • Allright, thanks alot, it's exactly what I wanted to know. In that case, we only need to use a pendrive to store our data.

    Take care!

  • Hello. Nice vid. I have a question. My family's computer is a Dell computer with XP Home Edition. Can I get Xubuntu on my USB flash drive? If so, will I lose Windows XP? How can I have Xubuntu with out it being on the computer so that I can just pop in my usb when ever I want to use Xubuntu (So that it can be like I never got Xubuntu)?

    Please contact me.

    Thank You, very much.

    :)

    Ricardo

  • Do a Google search for "pen drive linux" and you should be all set.

  • Is xubuntu loaded from SD fast and usable? (a part in the boot process..)

Is possible to install winxp in the SD card?

  • It is possible to install XP on the SD card, but it is WAY more complicated than installing Xubuntu on the SD card. As for usability, Xubuntu runs about as fast on the SD card as Windows does from the SSD.

Also, you could create two 2GB partitions on the SSD and just install both operating systems to your main memory and use the SD card for storage. You'll probably want to use nLite to shrink XP and you'll certainly want to turn off your page file, but you can cram them both on there.

  • I am looking to buy one of these. Is xp installation hard? Thanks Alex

  • If you have a USB DVD-ROM drive and an XP installation disc, it should be a breeze. If not, you have to create a bootable flash drive and jump through some hoops to load your Windows installer files onto that disc, which is doable, but a bit more difficult.

  • Would it be easier to buy a xp dvd at like bestbuy (or wherever) or make my own? Is it even possible to make your own?

  • You cannot make your own (legally). But if you have an installation disc, you can use it to create a new, stripped down install disc that will take up less space on your Eee PC using a program called nLite.

  • and if i don't have a the original xp install disk, is it still possible?

  • No. You cannot install XP without an XP installation disc. The Eee PC does not come with an XP installation disc, but future versions of the Eee PC may come with Windows preinstalled.

  • Alrights, thanks for your help.

  • does the computer originaly come with linux?

  • So after getting this far with the Eee PC, how do you like it and would you buy it over a $300-$400 laptop?

  • Absolutely. Although the Eee PC is basically a laptop, comparing it to other notebooks in the same price range is sort of like comparing apples and oranges. The Eee PC weighs just 2 pounds, has solid state memory which makes it sturdier and which helps it boot quickly, and gets decent if not great battery life at 3 to 3.5 hours. It's more like an expensive ultraportable, but without the high price tag, and with a slower processor and less RAM and disk space.
