I'm betting roddick wished he made the volley that he hit at 0:23 in the Wimby '09 final when he had 4 set points to take a 2 sets to love lead and he missed a sitter of a volley.
he knew that he would lose 90% of the long rallies to federer, who had more accuracy, depth and variety than roddick all match. he tried playing toe to toe in the first few games as you can see, and it was obvious federer was in another planet that night. so the only thing left to do, was to try and press federer somehow, and pray to god he was having a bad day and would start to make some unforced errors.
Roodick's game plan here to go to the net is all wrong, players are now being able to beat Federer in baseline rallies, as Federer is now a little more complacent than before. Not trying to take anything away from this, it's a joy to watch Federer play here, arguably the best performance he has ever produced in his career :)
@cavaleer I agree with your assessment. Roddick is definitely an overachiever, given the technical flaws in his game. Converseley, Safin was an underachiever. Safin is my favorite player of that generation. Had he consistenly played to his potential, Fed would have far fewer slam titles.
@mrbobevans Very, very true. I enjoyed Safin and really wanted him to develop his talent but unfortunately it never materialized. He definitely would've snatched a few slams from Fed and even Nadal at RG.
@mrbobevans Plus, Roddick is so very clueless at the net. The worst thing he did for his strokes and game was to play with that damn babolat. It overinflated his one real strength, his serve, but limited the rest of his game. Oh well. He's still having a great life. ;-)
maybe im wrong, but i think so many points Roddick just gave up, yes, no doubt they were hard to reach and so on but i think he could have gotten at least half of them, but he just gave up half way
The pains and sufferings for Roddick started at 0:01 and ended up at 09:44 and were expressed at 08:58.If you ever think to call a tennis player perfect you really have an easy option.Roger Federer of Australian Open 2007
i just dont get why roddick doesnt do well in aussie maybe its the heat. but he won the sony erricson a couple of times. i mean its the same court hard court and he won the US open in 2003 or 2004 i cant remember but he won that.
and to be honest i personally think roddick is the most underrated players in tennis cause of his record with federer but i can honestly say the one person federer loves playing is roddick cause roddick really gives federer a run for his money. roddick is my favorite.
@kumar01234 I don't think the US and Australian surfaces are the same. They're both hard courts, but I remember hearing somewhere that they're different types of hard court. I'm not too sure of it though, I could be wrong.
And, he won it in '03, '04 is when Fed began his streak of 5 in a row.
Roddick's shots feed into Federer's strengths. Nadal's shots feed into Federer's only weaknesses. Nadal's forehand into his backhand is the ONE thing that did a number on Federer's general confidence, taking him off of cloud nine and back to mortal ground, which has caused him to suddenly become terrible at converting breakpoints, no matter who he's playing.
He's the most talented, gifted player of all time. But no one's perfect. And all it takes is one imperfection to dethrone a king.
@superman11978 people say that, but roger say´s that, heavy top spin balls, to his backhand, don´t bother him anymore..I think he´s practiced a lot, over the last few years, with left handed player´s, in order to deal, with rafa´s forehand..
@extradutyfelt1 The one handed backhand's weakness is that you can only defend against high, penetrating balls like Nadal's. If you opt to drive it back, you lose control. Gasquet covers this weakness by playing in the back, where the ball loses penetration by the time it reaches him, so height is not a problem, but Federer plays closer to the baseline. I do believe that Federer's backhand has gotten better, but to neutralize Nadal's forehand like Djokovic does is unlikely.
you idiots saying that roddick had a poor performance, put it this way, he would've beat more than 90% of the entrants in that tournament in straight sets.
@thisoldman99 No doubt. His shots were pretty deep, had a lot of power when required, had lots of top spin when appropriate. His approach shots weren't thaaaaat bad...
But the truth is, Federer was coming off 3 years where he only lost about 12 matches. How many other players has had a record as good as that..?
well, that's why by the time of this match, 97% of the entrants were already out. and beating more than 90% would still leave us with 10-12 guys he wouldn't beat (or at least not in straights).. still so while i'm with you on defending andy, the numbers don't work too well for a grand slam field. ;)
@thisoldman99 It doesn't matter. Roddick will never win a grand slam again. He can only cry and complain when he's losing in the opening rounds and feign shoulder injuries to get out of the French.
It's funny watching this match because so many times I see a Roddick serve blocked or floated back and I picture Sampras receiving a shot like that instead of Roddick. Where Roddick back pedals on a slow floating weak return, Sampras would be coming in and placing a wicked deep, short, angled or spinning volley. Even Agassi might have tried a drive volley. Yeah Federer did great to make the returns on some of those shots and with some u just say too good but Andy wasted chances.
@wulfuchiha But then if Roger noticed that his opponent was trying to attack those balls, he would change it up on the return, and make it difficult to serve and volley.
This tennis match I feel will be shown for a long time. I don't think anyone has seen how such a good tennis player, a top ten player, in a time where the level of tennis was so high, being beaten with such elegance, ability, speed, poise, power and JUST PLAIN CRAZINESS. He is the greatest of all time.
thats like a 6 game average for his opponents in best of 5 matches. and if you watch the matches they had to be thankful for that handful of games they were given lol
roddick tried to come in because that is his game serve, forehand groundstroke, and volley and Federer just has a more developed game and all he did was wait for roddick to come in then pull off an incredible pass, but to a person of Federer's calibre it isn't extremely hard.
Ouch. I see a lot of poor shot selection and passivity from Roddick, playing high balls down the middle when he has opportunities to go on the offensive. It's disappointing and it's also the general pattern of Roddick's career matchups with Fed. It's like the opposite of Nadal in that where Nadal's game plays to Fed's weaknesses, Roddick's game plays to Fed's strengths. yep, i think its official now. this match mean't that federer had hit thr highest peak of his mountain. he stopped getting better after this destruction match vs roddick, in fact he started to decline after his aussie open 07 win vs gonzalez. evident - had poor showings at indian wells and miami afterwards, terrible blips of concentration during his run to the french open 07 final ( i mean who the hell loses a 1-6 set to robredo except for crap players) and struggled to defend wimby crown 07.
there actually is a difference between one guy playing pretty well (Andy) and still being owned between another guy that just kills himself with unforced errors (Federer in the FO final). Watch the highlights of that match and tell me that Nadal played brilliantly. He played as well as anyone expected, Federer was the one who played like total crap, one of the worst matches I've seen him play
@anishcheckit yeah but thats when federer played shit. roddick didnt play shit here at all, just unfortunately ran into fed who was at his peak of the mountain here.
Roddick himself was hitting very sharp shots himself, many of which imo would have been winners against another player. Interestingly though, many of Federer's winners were passing shots, so I wonder how the match would have played out if Roddick played strictly a baseline game.
if roddick´s groundstrokes had the power and penetration, that they had in 2004, he would have made life harder for federer here, nobody can win agains´t roger in a hardcourt grand slam, pushing balls back at him, shotmaker´s eat up pusher´s..
It jus started to look good for Roddick in the first set when he broke back. But I guess Federer was thinking should I crush him now? Guess he just did that no more chances after that:L
@0o0oja Roddick never knew how to dress. I mean, Federer's style now is not bad, its a more preppy look, but i'm just more of a fan of his 2004-early 2007 look. Roddick has always been like wtf

@Ou8y2k2 I wouldn´t call it inhuman, a fantastic performance for sure, on roger´s part, there was nothing roddick could really do, but I don´t think roger is supernatural, just because he can deliver these performances, him crying like a baby, when nadal beat him is an example of how human he is..at the end of the day roger crys, pees and poops like everyone else. that´s just my opinion, as far as im concerned, roger get´s more than enough praise already..
@reefric Inhuman != supernatural. Mongooses, for instance, are inhuman but not supernatural. You see, I can split hairs too ;-)
As for the the "crying like a baby" bit, try to shake the notion that crying is infantile. Nadal supposedly cried after Federer beat him at Wimbledon 2007. He won in 2008. Federer cried after Nadal beat him at the Australian Open 2009. He won in 2010. I've cried when relatives have died, and it has only made me stronger.
Um Roddick played terrible. Served average. And looped forehands mid court for Federer just to pummel back in the corners. Also, Roddick suicide bombing to the net didn't help. I mean, don't get me wrong, Federer would have won anyway regardless of how Roddick played, but Roddick didn't help himself with dumb tactics.
What a shocking first point gained by federer who didn't even need to move his feet. Is it because Roddick was too weak or simply Federer was too good?
Don't discount how terrible Roddick was in this match. Someone already mentioned he had mono, and that wouldn't surprise me 1 bit. He was worse at approaching the net than I am at approaching attractive women, and slower than a beached whale.
@hattrickster33 he played fine, up to his usual standard. that guy is just an apologist. and i never heard of roddick having mono in 07, last year yes, but not then. he definitely didn't mention it back then if he did have it.
anyway he was destroyed in this match, and not only coming in to the net.
the first set was actually a lot closer than the roddick points:federer points ratio in this video would suggest, roddick got federer pretty damn good on some other shots
Federer played some of his best tennis EVER in this match. He beat Roddick in an easy straight sets win. After those amazing shots from Federer, you thought he wasn't even trying during this match. By the way, amazing shot at @ 2:47
These guys have had every possible match. Federer has won easily (here) and has toughed out matches.
Here, Roddick wasn't playing good tennis, serves were unaccurate; you need to serve to Federer's body and on the lines which roddick didn't and was putting spin on everything which landed short for Federer to pummel.
I think Federer's 2005 wimbledon final was better; at least roddick played well and still got beat comprehensively.
Roddick wins, on average, about 55% of his second serve points. If you look up the statistic for this match, I think Roddick only managed something about 30% of his second serve points. I think he wasn't doing great with his first serve either. Only about 60% I believe? The point is that the point percentages won by Roddick was way low. Goes to show Federer did something too right cus Roddick isn't doing anything too wrong.
he played well before it. but not to federer. it wasn't until 2008 that he changed his game against roger. he broke the drought in 2008. he plays much smarter now.
chyeah federer complains about people hitting to his backhand too much (sarcastically thanks them because it improves the shot so much however) but how can they not? this is a good example of the scoreline you can recieve by "attacking" his forehand
the second roddick realized- you don't always have to go in off of fed's short slices, you can rip them at the corners and go back- things got harder for federer, as you can see in their recent matches because roddick isn't walking into federer's passing shots anymore. + roddick's renewed confidence helps loads.
But this match was a masterclass, there was no way anyone was beating him at this particular slam.
your right on the money there. the wimbledon final was a perfect example on that. andy didn't keep running around his backhand. when roger sliced it back to the return side of the court, he played his backhand instead. and hit a few good winners on it.
federer just played him like a violin maestro as he always did before roddick changed his game. roger would slice the return of serve so many times to the return side box so andy would run around his backhand and hit his forehand back to federer. from then on, roger had complete control of the point and he just picked his time to plant the winner crosscourt or down the line.
Sublime tennis. Silly to compare federer and Nadal. Federer at his best is sublime, Nadal at his best is spectacular, and if sublimity is your thing then Federer's the man. And I hope all this talk about whether he is the greatest off all time, which in the end is just a statistic, or how many grand slams he wins, which is aso just a statistic, becomes irrelevent to him and lets his focus on being in that pleasurable effortless zone that produces such beauty and perfection of play as this.

Roddick himself was hitting very sharp shots himself, many of which imo would have been winners against another player. Interestingly though, many of Federer's winners were passing shots, so I wonder how the match would have played out if Roddick played strictly a baseline game.

Greatest individual performance of all time? Nah, Serena was much better VS Sharapova in the women's final lol.
AJB3 1 year ago
Nowadays federer's shots land much shorter which give opponents a chance to hit hard at him, maybe a strength loss due to age.
Baddieko 1 year ago
hypothetical situations are bullshit. one thing is clear, NO ONE could have beaten federer the way he played during this match. not even nadal
nalbandianfan09 1 year ago 2
You can't play better than that...

if roddick´s groundstrokes had the power and penetration, that they had in 2004, he would have made life harder for federer here, nobody can win agains´t roger in a hardcourt grand slam, pushing balls back at him, shotmaker´s eat up pusher´s..

andy roddick was born to be toyed by federer again n again
godfaathr 1 year ago
It jus started to look good for Roddick in the first set when he broke back. But I guess Federer was thinking should I crush him now? Guess he just did that no more chances after that:L

@365to173repubsPWNED Now that I think about it, yeah.... But Roddick's shirts are HUGE on him.
0o0oja 1 year ago
@0o0oja Roddick never knew how to dress. I mean, Federer's style now is not bad, its a more preppy look, but i'm just more of a fan of his 2004-early 2007 look. Roddick has always been like wtf

you kinda start to feel bad for roddick...every time they play he tries so hard to beat federer but federer just seems to be too good =\
aznking01010 1 year ago 2
Roddick didn't even play that badly...Federer was just incredible...
No wonder they call this the GREATEST individual performance of all time...
I've never seen a player be so much in the zone as Federer was in sets 2 and 3...
Take away Roddick's serve in this match and it could've, and probably would've, been..6-4,6-0,6-0
AlphaDraconis7 2 years ago 30
@AlphaDraconis7 no, roddick held 4 times in the first. take away his serve and it could've been a triple bagel.
Ou8y2k2 1 year ago
@Ou8y2k2 don´t know if you´re aware of this, but roddick actually broke back, after being broken in the beginning of the first set..
reefric 1 year ago
@reefric Right, then it could've been 6-1, 6-0, 6-0 without his serve. It's still an inhuman performance by Federer.
Ou8y2k2 1 year ago
@Ou8y2k2 I wouldn´t call it inhuman, a fantastic performance for sure, on roger´s part, there was nothing roddick could really do, but I don´t think roger is supernatural, just because he can deliver these performances, him crying like a baby, when nadal beat him is an example of how human he is..at the end of the day roger crys, pees and poops like everyone else. that´s just my opinion, as far as im concerned, roger get´s more than enough praise already..
reefric 1 year ago
@reefric Inhuman != supernatural. Mongooses, for instance, are inhuman but not supernatural. You see, I can split hairs too ;-)
As for the the "crying like a baby" bit, try to shake the notion that crying is infantile. Nadal supposedly cried after Federer beat him at Wimbledon 2007. He won in 2008. Federer cried after Nadal beat him at the Australian Open 2009. He won in 2010. I've cried when relatives have died, and it has only made me stronger.
IMHO, his praise is all earned.

Anaconda43VR 1 year ago
@AlphaDraconis7 no. make that 6-0, 6-0, 6-0.
BrotherTree1 1 year ago
the thing with rodick is that he focuses to hard on hitting a hard than on putting the ball precisley like federer does.
Respectthewilderness 2 years ago
Federer has better strategy, hitting patterns, makes decisions faster in the spur of the moment, better aim. That is really what makes him better.
RobT89 1 year ago
What a shocking first point gained by federer who didn't even need to move his feet. Is it because Roddick was too weak or simply Federer was too good?

Don't discount how terrible Roddick was in this match. Someone already mentioned he had mono, and that wouldn't surprise me 1 bit. He was worse at approaching the net than I am at approaching attractive women, and slower than a beached whale.
walterwoods28 2 years ago 12
@walterwoods28 Don't forget this is a semi-final. He can't be as bad as all that if he made it that far.
hattrickster33 11 months ago
@hattrickster33 he played fine, up to his usual standard. that guy is just an apologist. and i never heard of roddick having mono in 07, last year yes, but not then. he definitely didn't mention it back then if he did have it.
anyway he was destroyed in this match, and not only coming in to the net.
demondayzzz 11 months ago
Federer's movement in this match is absolutely ridiculous. Look at 09:06, for example. It looks like he's dancing.

the first set was actually a lot closer than the roddick points:federer points ratio in this video would suggest, roddick got federer pretty damn good on some other shots

Federer played some of his best tennis EVER in this match. He beat Roddick in an easy straight sets win. After those amazing shots from Federer, you thought he wasn't even trying during this match. By the way, amazing shot at @ 2:47

To all those Fed-doubters that Roddick played poorly, Fed was just invincible on that night. No excuses.
PasTaB0yy 2 years ago 7
These guys have had every possible match. Federer has won easily (here) and has toughed out matches.
Here, Roddick wasn't playing good tennis, serves were unaccurate; you need to serve to Federer's body and on the lines which roddick didn't and was putting spin on everything which landed short for Federer to pummel.
I think Federer's 2005 wimbledon final was better; at least roddick played well and still got beat comprehensively.
Anaconda43VR 2 years ago
Roddick wins, on average, about 55% of his second serve points. If you look up the statistic for this match, I think Roddick only managed something about 30% of his second serve points. I think he wasn't doing great with his first serve either. Only about 60% I believe? The point is that the point percentages won by Roddick was way low. Goes to show Federer did something too right cus Roddick isn't doing anything too wrong.

WeekendatBernies1974 2 years ago
What a catastrofic match for Roddick. )=
salaheddine10 2 years ago
chyeah federer complains about people hitting to his backhand too much (sarcastically thanks them because it improves the shot so much however) but how can they not? this is a good example of the scoreline you can recieve by "attacking" his forehand
rockerduff1231 2 years ago 2
Federer enjoyed that haha
fujifour 2 years ago 2
the second roddick realized- you don't always have to go in off of fed's short slices, you can rip them at the corners and go back- things got harder for federer, as you can see in their recent matches because roddick isn't walking into federer's passing shots anymore. + roddick's renewed confidence helps loads.
But this match was a masterclass, there was no way anyone was beating him at this particular slam.
demondayzzz 2 years ago 7
your right on the money there. the wimbledon final was a perfect example on that. andy didn't keep running around his backhand. when roger sliced it back to the return side of the court, he played his backhand instead. and hit a few good winners on it.
WeekendatBernies1974 2 years ago
you'll never ever see this kind of tennis again!
david93fcb 2 years ago 6
man WTF was roddick playing at, he was just looping forehands short on a plate to federer.
EscapedC0nvict 2 years ago
federer just played him like a violin maestro as he always did before roddick changed his game. roger would slice the return of serve so many times to the return side box so andy would run around his backhand and hit his forehand back to federer. from then on, roger had complete control of the point and he just picked his time to plant the winner crosscourt or down the line.
WeekendatBernies1974 2 years ago
No, at least roddick before this match played decently, here roddick was playing stupid, comming in on half-court balls.

federer owns tennis?
kusta345 2 years ago 3
Sublime tennis. Silly to compare federer and Nadal. Federer at his best is sublime, Nadal at his best is spectacular, and if sublimity is your thing then Federer's the man. And I hope all this talk about whether he is the greatest off all time, which in the end is just a statistic, or how many grand slams he wins, which is aso just a statistic, becomes irrelevent to him and lets his focus on being in that pleasurable effortless zone that produces such beauty and perfection of play as this.
