@Bk94541 They are cute and interesting but I don't think I would want them pecking and things and potentially destroying them in my back yard. However it is very interesting to see them in other people's gardens!
they are not eating your deck they are looking for insects. They want your deck to make a nest. unfortunatly they are wasteing time and energy so this should definatly not be happening shew them away next time.
Man, you are ONE LUCKY LADY!!! I have a pair that is so skittish that if you even appear at the window and they see you, they fly away to the primal woodland next to us. If anyone doubts that birds evolved from dinosaur DNA, look at these birds! Can you say, "Pterosaur?"
What a super great video of the Pileated Woodpecker! They sure are huge birds, much larger than the average red headed woodpecker and just at stunning to look at! ~Vis~
@pettyofficer30 No, removing wood is purely functional. The reason they bore into wood is to either gain access to insects living inside, such as beetle larve or carpenter ants, or to build a nest.
Anybody catch the hummer zipping in and out starting at 1:08? Makes the one pileated closest to the camera retreat! The two species just don't seem to get along very well for some reason.
They are beautiful birds but sure can do a lot of damage. What treat to capture them on video. Your video was great watching. I've also got some bird videos, one of a male cardinal You can view it under.......mylensview
Excellent filming. I have a good one also but my MB was to high (157). Difficult to control on a camera. One word of advice, discourage the Pilated Woodpecker from making that hole in your pole larger, "it will become larger, be assured". I know it is nice to see them so close but they can do a fair amount of damage to your wood.
this past month is the first time i ever saw one of these wood peckers!! he or she was out on my tree it took me and hour on the internet..to figure out what it was i hope to catch mine on video nice video of it!!
Thanks for the comment,Kathy. If you liked this video, you'll love the one I have of the woodpecker destroying my flowers, it was pretty funny. Just search MicheleBee for my other videos.

I presume the word 'deck' is the American word for veranda.
alanheath 6 months ago
@alanheath in this case, the word 'deck' is Canadian for Veranda ;)
MicheleBee 6 months ago
@MicheleBee I wrote that before noticing that you are Canadian!! Sorry!! Had I known, I would have been much more careful!!

@alanheath Veranda, in America, is also a brand name for an engineered composite decking material.

Pretty badass.
But isn't going to destroy your pillar eventually? They are capable of that.

The twigs are for the hummingbirds to perch on. If you watch closely, you can see a hummingbird around 1:05.
MicheleBee 10 months ago
why do u have twigs tied 2 the pole?

I like how all woodpeckers have that distinctive red marking on top of their heads. Well I think one doesn't have one :/
