GMO's aren't the problem, Monsanto's dangerous and unethical practices are the problem. There are great things that could be done with the science but Monsanto is a private corporation that only exists to maximize profits, it doesn't have the best interests of humanity at heart. If anyone is going to do research on GMO's the research needs some sort of public control and oversight, this is the sort of thing that can NOT be trusted to corporations.

Farmers who did not willingly sign onto or buy Monsanto seed should be indemnified from 'contamination' as that is something that they have no control over. This type of indemnification needs to be fought for and instituted.

Well I must say that you should probably starve because virtually all food today is the product of genetic modification, and humans have been doing it for thousands of years for both plants and animals. Even organic farmers, who cross polinate their product, are experimenting with genetic modification.

If the patenting of gmo seed is legal for the big corporation, it should be legal for the small concern that develops its owns seed through selective breeding. Having said this I would recommend to these farmers to patent one of their pure uncontaminated strains of seed, plant it and then when it is contaminated by Monsanto gmo sue Monstanto and the farmer responsible for damages due to degradation of the gmo by cross comtamination.

This makes no sense. It's called an intellectual copyright. If Monsanto develops awesome GMOs, you shouldn't just be able to buy them once, keep the seed, and own them forever. If you don't want the plants, just don't buy them. Hint: there's a reason Monsanto controls ~80% of the market--their seeds are awesome. They SELL seeds, and they couldn't be a business if you just bought them once. Terminator technology all the way!! Hell, that would also deal with the containment issues.

Also, they don't own the entire world's food supply. They own the GMO market, which most producers buy into because GMOs have higher yields (and are just generally sweet). Read that again: alternatives do exist, but Monsanto (and GMOs) do it better. Yes, it's *almost* a monopoly, but what can anyone do now? Force the company to split up?

Understandably, farmers are enthusiastic about buying said seeds. Everything is cool for everyone. Next year, nobody buys your seeds because they keep a portion and grow them again. Your company-unable to recoup it's expenses-shuts down. Everyone loses their job. That's what you want?

It makes sense that GMOs can be copyrighted. If you alter the DNA of a plant to make it grow better, you should be able to profit from the sale it. If we can't do that, there's no incentive for research.

@aznpeabird13 these people aren't using mansantos seeds, the cross pollination is coming from a field next to his, which happens in every field. Mansanto has been doing this a ton in Iowa! Its impossible to prevent a neighbors plants on his land from blowing over to your field and mixing in with your plants.

We feel bad hearing unjust stories for several years now, but fighting Monsanto has never paid off. Another route must be developed and vigorously promoted. This is best done in the farm states and provinces, and aimed at all elected representatives and the public. Probably most citizens can understand and see the false promises of GMO's, and ultimately would support GMO labeling. You must raise a massive public campaign to elect only officials who support GMO labeling. What else works?

Its a shame. I know all of this all ready, but I always try to refresh my memory. I feel since the government is being controlled by Mansanto (and other GMO suppliers), well it is up to us to change this. The government is not protecting the people and this is wrong, there is an awful lot about animal rights, but what about plants! They deserve to be treated with respect too!!!

GMO's aren't the problem, Monsanto's dangerous and unethical practices are the problem. There are great things that could be done with the science but Monsanto is a private corporation that only exists to maximize profits, it doesn't have the best interests of humanity at heart. If anyone is going to do research on GMO's the research needs some sort of public control and oversight, this is the sort of thing that can NOT be trusted to corporations.

If the patenting of gmo seed is legal for the big corporation, it should be legal for the small concern that develops its owns seed through selective breeding. Having said this I would recommend to these farmers to patent one of their pure uncontaminated strains of seed, plant it and then when it is contaminated by Monsanto gmo sue Monstanto and the farmer responsible for damages due to degradation of the gmo by cross comtamination.

This makes no sense. It's called an intellectual copyright. If Monsanto develops awesome GMOs, you shouldn't just be able to buy them once, keep the seed, and own them forever. If you don't want the plants, just don't buy them. Hint: there's a reason Monsanto controls ~80% of the market--their seeds are awesome. They SELL seeds, and they couldn't be a business if you just bought them once. Terminator technology all the way!! Hell, that would also deal with the containment issues.

Also, they don't own the entire world's food supply. They own the GMO market, which most producers buy into because GMOs have higher yields (and are just generally sweet). Read that again: alternatives do exist, but Monsanto (and GMOs) do it better. Yes, it's *almost* a monopoly, but what can anyone do now? Force the company to split up?

It makes sense that GMOs can be copyrighted. If you alter the DNA of a plant to make it grow better, you should be able to profit from the sale it. If we can't do that, there's no incentive for research.

We feel bad hearing unjust stories for several years now, but fighting Monsanto has never paid off. Another route must be developed and vigorously promoted. This is best done in the farm states and provinces, and aimed at all elected representatives and the public. Probably most citizens can understand and see the false promises of GMO's, and ultimately would support GMO labeling. Its a shame. I know all of this all ready, but I always try to refresh my memory. @rodzmen1 nice! thats good, increaseing different genetic diversity is always good! thanks for helping out, believe me there is a bunch of people doing this now. we cant do anything, the gov uses subsidies that take our taxes and give free money to these people, so sadly this really is our only way. i am still not fully sure about when the seed is in the wild, there will be some things that take off, but hopefully there is some care taken so seed isnt wasted, like a mowed area. much respect!

@rodzmen1 i found fedco is a good supplier, still there is always that risk with the companies because the GMO has gotten a big foot hold. supposedly fedco tests for GMO which is always good. thank you! hope we can atleast slow the progression with adding different genetic diversity to our food system!

The reason Percy Schmeiser is a fraud is becasue he wasn't telling the full story. When his seeds were "infected" with monsanto GMO's (in actuality he just didn't plant his crops far enough apart, something he should have know better about) he TRIED SELLING HIS CANOLA SEED AS A MONSANTO PRODUCT! That is why Monsanto sued "poor ol' Percy"
