I almost named my daughter Anastasia. It would be fitting since she was and still is my resurrection (personally.) She is as beautiful as the name and this song.
Anastasia was one of Dan's wives. It sounds like he was in love.....but life will always deal us an unlucky hand. My calico cat is named "Anastasia" just because of this song. I miss Dan so much. There will NEVER be another one like him.
Thank you for reaching out to me. It was a very difficult time, especially watching my husband suffer mentally as well as physically. You mentioned Anastasia's new last name. I ran in to her at a post office in New Mexico a couple of years ago and she said she was moving out of state. I know she was living with a man and it was him she was leaving with. I assume this is the man she married. I hope she is happy. She is such a giving loving person.
When Anastasia talked about Dan with me that day my husband passed away, she had only good things to say about him. I heard of Dan's passing from friends who knew how much his music had influenced my life. It was very disturbing to me to find out that the month and year my husband died from colon cancer was the same month and year that Dan found out he had prostate cancer. I thank god for the many memories left behind to remind me of how beautiful both of these men were.
I'm sorry you lost your beloved. Grief seems hard because it's always there still feeling raw, just under the surface no matter how much time goes by. I lost my beloved ten years ago and it still hurts and I miss him deeply. I hope you are hanging in there with life. For a couple who is lucky enough to love deeply, it's hard being the one who's left behind, the last to go. You had to witness your husband's suffering and live through the moment of his passing. Hugs to you across time & space.
writingtome, I'm so moved by the way you hug and comfort each other. I saw one interview with Dan, he mentioned he want his song to influence people in their life. I can feel it now. May your "(falling tears) Carried far to a wandering star that only the heart may know"! you have my blessing!
It's wild the way Dan brings strangers like us together. Being human, we've all felt the pain, but Dan had the talent to write and the words and music...that makes us want to survive the pain and reach out to others. Happy holidays. I'm thinking about Dan and Jean and how sad that a whole year has gone by without Dan here in body as well as spirit! Being selfish, I wanted to hear Dan sing when he was eighty years old (though he may have grown bored with singing and become a grizzled old sailor!)
Thank you for thinking about me and my loss. Like you, I can feel that the hurt will never go away...but perhaps it will at least be free from my mind and heart more often than not. Hugs to you too. Sometimes it is so much easier to communicate this kind of sorrow to someone you have never met.
joycekiersten, I'm sorry about your loss, and was deeply touched by how you feel! "May your heart rejoice in Dan's song, may the skies be fair above you, as you journey ever on!"
My husband had late stage colon cancer.I used to listen to this song and drop to the floor in tears thinking about my husband's illness. We had gone to Dan's concerts several times. In the last 3 months of Phil's life, we had a hospice nurse named Anastasia Savage. 3 days before Phil passed, I mentioned to her how Dan's music was a big part of my life. She smiled at me and said "I am the Anastasia in his song". Unfortunately, Phil was no longer coherent. He would have loved to known who she was.
That is quite the story! May I ask what year, you had Anastasia as your nurse? I know they divorce in '96. It seemed to have been a very painful divorce.I have been to a site, where Anastasia has posted a bio. It seems, that she is a very remarkable woman.
A spiritual hug from one Danfan to another. I am so sorry for your loss.
I don't know if I ever actually got my respose to you. I am fairly new to the YouTube response system. Anyway, just in case I never got the response directly to you, the year was 2003. Phil passed away in April of that year. I tried to find the bio you mentioned, but was unable to find it. Do you have a website address that I might try. I saw her a couple of years after Phil's passing at a post office in Espanola, NM. She said she was moving out of state. I hope she is well and happy.
I believe she is now Anastasia Ealy...Where Dan loved, he seems to have loved deeply. Dan and Jean were fortunate to meet each other and have a chance to be in love. Middle-aged love is great. Hugs to the very talented Jean...grief can be so very difficult. Thinking about you and Dan during this sad season that marks a year since Dan morphed.
@joycekiersten wow what a great story, i happened to meet Dan and Anastasia backstage, when they were married, it was great, they both were wonderful!
This song is absolutely hauntingly beautiful! So poignant. This whole album
THANKS! Asquare176 for the stories, so so sweet to hear and know more about his life. I wish someone would write a book, but then maybe the mystery is part of the beauty of his life. He was open in his music, yet so private.
Anastasia must of been quite the muse for his heart. And Jean his angel when he was in need..
Anastasia,Dan's 2nd wife.Interview in the 90's,Dan mention that this was the best relationship that he had been in.Through their relationship he found what had been lost in his personal life;she returned his spirituality to him, sense of humor, sense of God and the love of the Southwest. You can feel those emotions in the song. This is the time that his music was reflecting on the environment and not so much on his personal dealings with life. They separated in 1996.He met Jean soon after.
Ah! I was not aware of that. Thank you for sharing this tidbit of information with us. All I really know about a great deal of Dan Fogelberg songs is that I like them very much, so it's nice to learn a little bit about the artist behind the masterpiece. :)
I am glad that I was able to give this song a true life. It's a very beautiful song. Dan as usual, put that tremendous heart on the outside of his sleeve. Bones in the Sky is the other tear jerker for me.The song is a tribute to Georgia O'Keefe, the painter. I felt it reflected Dan's life as much as O'Keef's. Anastasia was a nurse of O'Keefe in her later years.
Interesting that Dan wrote love songs to each one of his wives. Lucky girls. They must each feel the loss of this man, even tho they have moved on. Imagine how much they must miss him!
Vee, "Dancing Shoes" I believe is a Maggie song. There are so many Maggie Songs, and of course the divorce album. She did not like having him, write about anything that closely resembled their lives together.
With Jean he did not put out an album/cd.for much of their relationship, except for Full Circle and the Christmas album. On Full Circle "This Heart" was written for Jean and of course "Some Times A Song". I have a feeling that the new cd," Love In Time", will have many Jean songs on it?
I really don't know! On the interview for the album, he really did not mention a year when he wrote this, like he did with other songs. To make a guess,I would have to say Anastasia. The reason? Anastasia is a true Westerner by heart.I don't believe her heart was in the Maine landscape,as Dan's.This is speculation on my part, from a blog that I read.Jean on the other hand, would had followed him to the end of the earth and back. And with that, it could be Jean also. And maybe it's about no one?
Thank you asquare176, that's all right, it's hard to say. From "setting my signal fires, and watching the smoke." to "dropped you a postcard...I wish you were here". who ever she was, she was lucky to have Dan. He is really a man full of passion, and his language of love is really beautiful....
Thank you for your story. Yeah, I read some of this tonight online. I do believe he loved Anastasia's eyes. This song touches me so so deep. I can play it over and over...what a beautiful melody and homage to such a love. And this song is forever. Blessings to you, Anastasia, where ever you are.
Writingtome - Actually, I'm not sure who/what this song is about. All I know is, I looked for it on YouTube for some time, and came to realize that it wasn't on here. So I put it on here, as it's a beautiful song and should be shared with all. P.S.--Sorry about down-rating your comment; I actually did not mean to do that. Clicked the wrong icon, sorry.

This is an amazing post to read, as this song was always moving and even
more egnigmatic to me and the people around me who cheerished Dans music.
She must have been something special to inspire a song like this.
