  • daytona 500 then lakers celtics? best...day...ever...

  • what's the music in the background between 0:20 and 1:32? sounds like it could be Enya, Peter Gabriel, Zamfir, or even Cirque du Soleil...

  • Comment removed

  • dave despain on CBS?

  • I love how the #10 is in the background during the DW interview

  • So, nowadays is Nascar for poor and stupid people? =P

  • Its so odd seeing Daytona so small grandstand wise.

  • if Petty were to race again he would show everyone what racing is like

  • @superkryp13 i doubt he could do the two car drafts like the boys do today. Its just a different style of racing for a different generation.

  • Schrader was the best but engine problems, Earnhardt was with him but a cut tire cost him. Goes to show who in victory lane at the end of the day is not necessarily best driver, but the smartest and luckiest driver...

  • I used to get goosebumps when I heard the music at 0:08

  • how long did CBS cover nascar and the daytona 500?

  • @thedude19766 They covered the 500 from 1979-2000 They would also do other races throughout the year usuallly Texas, The 400 @ Daytona, Coca Cola 600, Usually most of the bigger races of the year. And let me tell you they always did an amazing job, especially Ken Squier who could paint a picture just by his voice

  • If only Dale hadnt blown that tire...

  • He's got a good car, and a good chance - and that's all Richard Petty EVER NEEDED.

  • An unfortunate situation for Kenny Schrader during the 125 after being the fastest car for three years running (1988, '89, '90), but may not have been a good showing for his new sponsor that left Rusty Wallace and the Blue Max team the year before. Earnhardt had the race in his grasp on the last lap until cutting a tire before driving to victory in his Chevrolet. Earnhardt won this race after 20 years of effort, but Daytona was cruel to Earnhardt. Derrike Cope only became another upset story.

  • Rare interview with Lynda Petty the classiest NASCAR wife ever. Think she started the racing wives auxiliary. 20 years later shes got cancer....hope she can beat it

  • This is so freakin cool. Mike Joy interviewing Waltrip and now they work side by side. Ken and Dave, seeing them here and then last night on Speeds coverage of Speedweeks. CBS had the best coverage then and Fox has the best coverage now (basically the same crew)

  • Damn I can't believe this was 20 years ago, I remember watching this live.

  • The intro music at 1:33 is called "Lightning Rod", from the Manhattan Production Music Library.

  • @TheLegendfrom205 can you post an mp3 of that song

  • I'll bet that everything Chris Economaki said just before handing off to Mike Joy was improvised. Right off the top of his head, live on national TV. He is AWESOME!

  • Check out the irony in the Intro...the '89 winner DW with the '90 winner's car in the background during his interview.

  • I second that!

  • bring back ken!!!!

  • LOL, that music is from Rain Man.

  • Hmph, wonder where else we'll see Mike Joy and Darrell together, like 11 years later.

  • Does anyone know who's doing voice over for CBS in this video (the CBS Sports bumper)?

  • Good ol' Chris Economaki (sp?). The man is a auto-racing legend, pretty much covered motorsports from the 50s all to the way to now.

  • You mean he announced the CBS Sports bumper at the beginning of this video (the one with the purple graphics and the orchestral arrangement)?

  • 0:08-0:15 (Who did VO for that?)

  • His last name was Jeffers but I am not sure of the first name.

  • I think it's Doug Jeffers. You might recognize him from the Miller High Life commercials where he talks about living the "high life." He's the narrator in those.

  • @BadBooking Got to meet him at Indianapolis in 2008. Still going strong

  • yea i agree i live on the west coast and it would be good if the races started at 9 am over here. and its a fact when nascar changed its times like in 05 the ratings decreased about 30%, but thats what happens when you have jackasses like brian france.

  • 0:07 to 0:17 is my favorite they should do that theme for every daytona 500 that was on cbs!!!

  • Despain has hair!

  • yes! back when nascar was worth watching!!

  • Ahh, those were the days. IMO, the 90's were the best time in NASCAR

  • Lap leader totals during the 1990 Daytona 500: Dale Earnhardt: 155, finshed 5th. Geoffrey Bodine: 8, finished 9th. Terry Labonte: 7, finished 2nd. Jack Pennington: 6, finished 25th. Derrike Cope: 5, finished 1st. Bobby Hillin Jr.: 4, finished 6th. Jimmy Spencer: 4, finished 15th. Lake Speed: 3, finished 16th. Mark Martin: 3, finished 21st. Davey Allison: 2, finished 20th. Bill Elliott: 1, finished 3rd. Ricky Rudd: 1, finished 4th. Harry Gant: 1, finished 18th.
  • You gotta love when the 500 started at noon and not 3 PM.

  • yeah, why do they wait so darn late now is a mystery...

  • Exactly.

  • This is my guess here: They want the race to end in "primetime" which is under the lights so the NASCAR

  • To complete my earlier comment, Nextel Cup series can raise television ratings if i'm not mistaken.

  • This starting races at 3 and 4 in the afternoon is getting rediculous. The race at Sanoma this year didn't start til 5PM in the east, that's 2 in the west... WHY?

  • Because Brian France is running NA$CAR.

  • Of course. Big Bill is probably spinning in his grave right now at how bad his grandson is running the organization.

    Bill, Jr. too!!!

  • Yep.

  • Not only are the start times rediculous, but the worthless hour plus prerace shows are enough to drive you insane and go on a rampage. Every race the drivers are asked the same cliche questions and give the same two-bit one-dimensional answers. No personalities anymore!

  • That's why I don't look at the TV start times anymore, only MRN/PRN. They don't do the hour pre-race junk.

  • David Hasselhoff, Tom Wopat and John Schneider could have been NASCAR announcers back in the 90s

  • lol

  • or Tom Wopat and John Schneider could have been NASCAR Winston Cup drivers in the 1980s

  • Clint Eastwood would make a great announcer for NASCAR

  • back in the late 80s or early 90s

  • wow thanks for posting this! It brings back alot of memories!!

  • Boy, that's the sign of a good prerace; I'm all fired up to watch it even though I already know how it turned out!

  • Awsome poor ken my fav always sat up front never won.that pole speed was 196 mph and now they go 185 it's getting real sad.

  • look at dispane and joy!

  • gotta love Chris Economaki, too...brings back some awesome memories...

  • Thats actually a really cool early 90's CBS music lol

  • I like it better than the 2000 CBS NASCAR music.

  • Gotta love when the 500 started at 12:15 not 3:45

  • Yeah. Amen to that.

  • way better then now.

  • NEXT YEAR IT WILL BE A NIGHT RACE

  • That's because now they talk, sing, do a little dance... everything having nothing to do with racing.
