Wow, Voivod have to be some of the smartest men to have walked the earth! No album is like the other, yet almost everyone is a hidden gem. Especially this! The textures and different levels of every song is incredible and makes the album that much better! This is one of those hidden gems from huge bands that, during its release time, was hated by the masses, but years later has a comeback.
@paul44miles Great album yes, but I'm gonna say Nothingface was better, I'd call that acid-trippin-metal album :) They did one of the best covers ever, of Floyd's "Astronomy Domine"
its a great album I am a massive Voivod fan and this has to be their best. They could have done another heavy album at the time instead they took the time to create something intelligent and beautiful and still make a metal album.
The reason why a lot of die-hard Voivod fans don't like this great album is that some don't quite appreciate the beauty of progressivity, which is sad when you think of it.
I'm a sucker for crazy, creative and experimental prog sounds, and this is exactly what I'm talking about.
When they sing Rat or Angel, they are referring to the 13th century superstition of Devil's familiars. The Rats would often come from rivers into outhouses and bit believers on the ass leaving the Mark of Satan. Anyone who bore this mark was hanged or burned until dead.
IMO what killed this album is when they did a video for this album with borderline poseur look. When I saw the video I reacted the same way when Celtic Frost went "hairsprayish". Angel Rat is good I think of it as an EP to NF. I was just traumatized when i saw that video.
Yeah wasn't the 'Clouds in my house' video awful?! Everyone wearing those poofy/foofy shirts like the Riverdance/gay pirates?! I reacted basically the same way. I had to go watch the 'Ravenous Medicine' and 'Tribal convictions' videos twice each to neutralize the stinging.
glad to see the iron gang chiming in the big love for this record. as i stated on the prow vid, voivod went out on a serious limb for this record and it worked! r.i.p. piggy.
year! I've just listened it again recently. Unexpected album after the classic albums 'nothingface' and 'dimension hatross' but so good and inovative...
Brilliant... this song sums up the album, this album was so far out there it was revolutionary, This song is a summary of the album.. with the "we get lost" part.. an initiation to jack luminous imo... even today this "old" album is so far out of the main stream... wow.... amazing....
Such a great post, I totally agree, years later not many people understand and apreciate the depth and amazing landscape this album provides. Without a doubt it is such a solid album, every single track building this eerie and uneasy feeling to each song. A true masterpiece, though I must confess I love being amoung the few that understand and love this album, even diehard Voivod fans dislike this little gem...
@afoolisharrangement Im actually getting into Voivod now, and I love it! Soon ill be learning "The Prow" solo, for guitar, im learning to sing it as well. And this is the second song I heard from this album and I absolutely love it. I heard a few other Voivods song from a different album though.
@afoolisharrangement I dont dislike this album at all...It was a hard one to accept after Killing technology and Dimension Hatross but its in my opinion their best album....they haven't come close to matching it since....its a near perfect album to me...Its certainly one I have appreciated more as I go older :D
Piggy is/was SO underrated. Genius. RIP.

I'm a fan of thrash, put to be honest, I think the less harsh fast approach suits this band much more, the melodies work so much better.

Who knows or cares? I love this stuff as much as you. So, screw whoever doesn't. They're really the ones missing out on the experience.

@SuperUnbeliever someone who's jealous and can't write music as good as voivod!

Who cares what they were wearing in the Clouds in my House video!
You guys sound like the real poseurs for caring.
Besides, you ever hear a Bon Jovi song with lyrics like:
"One simple memory in every theory:
All random elements become determinants"?
Oh, you don't know/care what that means.
Wow, that's such a surprise coming from guys who would diss such a work of brilliance.

I love every Voivod album from Killing Tech. to Outer Limits but this one just does nothing for me!
WHY??????????
Someone help me, gimme another perspective or something on it. This sucks, I'm at the party, but everyone's having fun but me......
