@vernonvideos They do not remove any animals from the natural environment because of "other predators". If a shark or killer whale decides to kill and eat a dolphin, that's the circle of life. Sea World only captures injured and sick animals. If the animals heal and get well, they get released back to the wild.
just like a lot of people on here, I think that was just amazing. particularly with the Dolphin's reactions. I really have no words that can say how I feel about this vid, nice job in capturing this :)
That's impressive!! I would have never imagined Dolphins reacting like that. They may be thinking "Hey! I haven't seen your kind around here for a million years!" LOL
I take Pleo everywhere. Theme parks, museums, etc. I don't bring it to places like beaches where the air itself would harm it. But with Sea World, I simply kept him in a waterproof backpack and didn't sit anywhere near the splash zones, took the nose bleed seats
Nope, just don't want this to be their soap box. This is about the reaction of dolphins to a AI robot. Not the morals of captivity. And if you take it there, I will block you.
@sirensgrotto Thank you for the video it shows that dolphins are so self aware and were examining that Robot. I agree with you don't allow those to use your cute video as their soap box. But I am using it to show those of the 3K members of the save the blood dolphin campaign about dolphins self awareness. Now that you know please join us in our campaign to save the dolphins that are being slaughtered to fulfill the request for animals from Seaworld?
@NikkiesMommy2008 Sea World does not buy wild caught dolphins. Yes, they use to, to get a captive stock. Now they breed their dolphins in captivity by natural methods or artificial insemination. There are many aquariums around the world who do take wild dolphins from captivity, but you need to educate yourself better. Sea World is not one of them. That's not to say Sea World is perfect. Their life expectancy of their dolphins is low. But they do not get wild dolphins
@NikkiesMommy2008 Many years ago Sea World DID capture wild dolphins but they stopped that. They breed their own animals. And have such a high population of dolphins often sell or loan them to other aquariums, thus those aquariums won't get wild dolphins. The dolphins slaughtered are sent for meat to several countries, mostly Japan and other areas of Asia.
Oh my goodness that is just the sweetest thing to watch.. I had to favourite it! :P
When I was in Seaworld a few years ago these dolphins completly blew me away :P They were so sweet and inquisitive! I just fell in love with them! This is a beautiful video :)
Wow, very cool. I can't wait to get one for my birthday. Really creative idea too, who knew the dolphin's and Pleo would react like that to each other.
What was the reaction of the trainers to this? Did anyone come up with any theories as to why the dolphins would be so fascinated by what appears to be a baby dinosaur?
Apparently the dolphins are reacting the same way to it as they do dogs. Sea World has the dog/cat show and they sometimes walk the dogs over to the dolphin tank for interactions with them before the park opens. And apparently they reacted similar to Pleo. Not treating it like a toy, but like a fellow animal.
No. There is an underwater viewing area. You go down below into a "cave" and there are huge windows there of thick glass so you can see the dolphins underwater, but never get wet.
I would love to take my four roboraptors on a trip but, I don't know if they are aloud on airlines maybe they could double up two seats in first class while I sit in coach!!! Weren't you afraid that children would try to grab and touch him and follow you everywhere? Were you afraid he'd get wet? nice video it's good to see people treat their robots nice.....mine are like children to me. enjoy him....hope you have many happy dino years together.
I bet they're also reacting to the various infrared pulses that come out of Pleo's nose (which is how he senses the world around him, like the autofocus on a camera). I'm sure the dolphins can see a much wider spectrum of light than we can, so I bet they're curious about it.
It has a color video camera, 2 inferred cameras, over a dozen senors, a CPU brain.....I'd say its a bit more than "a toy". It is a robot that exhibits A.I. It is not pre-programmed to react to things the same way all the time. It reacts to stimuli in its environment. First time I took it in my local New Age store, it walked over to the candles, "sniffed" them, and then chose what color it liked.
@sirensgrotto HI. I just got my Pleo 1 week ago today and only his right nostril flashes the infra-red light. Is the left nostril also supposed to flash? Someone told me that the left only flashes (transmitter) and the right doesn't (receiver). I need to know in case there is something wrong with my Ozzy :) So far he is acting normal and cute! PS I LOVED THIS VIDEO! Both the dolphins and Pleo were so cute!! :)
This is absolutely amazing! Dolphins are such lovely creatures. You can actually feel their tenderness in their attempt to interact with a robot. I wonder if they idenified Pleo as a true reptile or some creature of the seas.
To be honest, the dolphins at seaworld are interested in any objects that aren't human. Last time I was there, they were fascinated by a guy throwing a screwed up ball of paper around :P
If they have seen the object before, they aren't usually interested. The day before I did this, the trainers brought a shower curtain with dolphins on it and they liked that. This was a bit different, IMO. One the dolphins stuck around for over 8 minutes, this video you see is edited down. Second, they copied Pleo's motions. His tail wagged, their's did. He opened his mouth, they opened their mouths. It was more than just curiosity. The trainers said they reacted to Pleo as if he was living.
that is probably one of the most coolest video of dolphins I have seen in a long time. that is so amazing...and so awesome that you got it on film and shared it.
Also, on a very sad note.... about Sharky passing...she was a amazing dolphin to know and love...she will be greatly missed by everyone she touched.
have you tried asking for one for christmas? im getting one this christmas i made a diary for my pleo and im gonna write about what im tihnking for my pleo im also gonna post stuff about what pleo does when he comes and how he interacts to his home that i made for him out of a lot of cute stuff! AWESOME! :)
Lovely! I really want a Pleo... But the shipping and extra tax I'd have to pay to get it through custom makes it really expensive to order all the way from Norway.
I love how two the dolphins were kind of bickering about the best spot. :P And how one of them seemed to be mimicking Pleo's head movements.
If the trainer rewarded one dolphin (how do you reward only one with sound anyway did I read that right?) for checking out Pleo, is it not reasonable to think that dolphin may have informed the others of something that is interesting, new and gives a possible reward for checking out? Not to mention Pleo emits IR and makes tons of clicking sounds, much like a Dolphin... Any or all of those are possible it seems to me... You should check out nat geo a few months back on animal intelligence..
Yes, you read that right. Dolphins and orcas both work well on being rewarded with things other than food. One dolphin likes water being scooped into its mouth with two bowls, MORE than getting a fish. One orca there prefers to have a big mirror brought up to it so it can wiggle its tongue at it.
Dolphin's then show more interest in Pleo then my real lizards do! I don't know if that makes them smarter, dumber or simply less trained then these dolphins but they do know right away without a doubt that it is not a living creature... place a real lizard about Pleo's size in front of my smaller then pleo lizards and they DO clearly know it's real...
lizard.
Interesting and fun video despite the one thing I don't understand (up next!)
I think the difference between your lizards and the dolphins is the glass between them. The dolphins are in a huge tank with a lot of water. I don't know if your lizards were in or out of a terrarium, but that has air flow. I think it's the sense of smell that matters here. Your lizards can smell that Pleo is not organic. The dolphins, however, cannot. But even if they can tell the thing is not alive, they are also intelligent enough to find it interesting. Last part is speculation, though.
If you like the serenity of this video, then do a search for "jellyfish set to music" for a similar experience. Wait for the nice ending depicting man and nature as one.
Yeah, I think she was wishing she could swim at that point. But I think the dolphins were wishing it even more. They pressed their beaks and heads against the glass so many times.
I doubt Pleo would work the moment it was submerged. Car lights and gears are totally two different things. I have no doubt the gears would instantly die, especially in water with such high salinity. But I know the trainers said they would have loved to have a waterproof Pleo, a Pleisosaur one.
Nah, cause every time of you decide to argue with me, it just sends my comment amount sky high. So please, stay around for a while and make total fools of yourself. I love to be amused by such simple things.
Marketing scam....sure....I am a full time employee of a pet store in Florida. Far from Ugobe and I get paid for none of it. So your assumptions and conspiracy theories are pathetic. And no, I won't block you kind of trolls because you amuse myself and others with your idiocy. So what will you say next? That I must be the creator's illegitimate daughter and that is why I like to share Pleo?
I think the movement of the toy is very close to the movement of a young animal...unsure, unsteady, and cleverly curious. The dolphins are naturally attracted to that.
Not sure, it makes me wonder too. However, I do not believe their echolocation can pass through that glass, so if that is the case, they may believe Pleo was a living creature. Its hard to say.
Clever marketing done here. A well rehearsed video with a very familiar looking kid in it. It's a toy and it cannot interact with it's surroundings, I know I own one too.
Marketing for whom? Me? I make no money from this. If I did, I would be at Sea World every week. And also, its not the Pleo's reactions that is awesome, its the dolphin's reactions.
That's a great video, very interesting interaction between technology and wildlife. Excellent choice of music for the subject matter too, this was a very well done video. I enjoyed watching it, thanks for sharing it with us!
I never brought Pleo near the water. The top of the tank is open, so people can feed and pet them, but sometimes the dolphins get excited and splash, so I never brought Pleo near that area. Or any area she may have been splashed at. Shamu show, we sat in the nosebleed seats, but the Pleos still enjoyed the show, especially the music.
Hey Siren, Engadget and a few others picked up my submission of your video so expect your view count and comment count to jump up a bit. Say Hi to Pixie and Crusoe for me.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The Pleo owner tried to get the dolphins' attention for 15 minutes with no luck, finally went to a dolphin trainer, who then told all the the other visitors to step away as they do an 'interaction'. The trainer then banged on the glass to get the dolphins attention, and pointed out the Pleo multiple times. It's a manufactured publicity stunt people! My Pleo gives the same reactions standing in front of a pillow.
Its the reactions of the DOLPHINS I found amazing more than Pleo's reaction. This was no publicity stunt. That is my Pleo, my video. I taped the whole thing and edited it together to share it with others. I am sorry you have turned to trolling my Pleo videos to feed your needs. You've been blocked so you can stop insulting me and others who find beauty in things like this.
But how many times have you seen dolphins react like this to a robotic dinosaur? That is the magic of the moment. Not how Pleo reacts, how the dolphins react.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Sorry, but there's nothing impressive about failing for 15 minutes to get the dolphins attention, then getting a trainer to TELL the dolphins to look at the thing.
I'm going to go watch those sea otters hold hands again.
NO...they told ONE dolphin to LOOK at it. That is the behavior. From that point on, THEY decide to stay or go. Only ONE was rewarded with a blow from the trainer's whistle. The rest came because they saw/heard the other dolphin looking at something interesting. From the moment the first dolphin looked at it, it was the dolphins free will to look at it. The trainers did nothing, but laugh and coo about how they responded. Telling me who was who and what body language they had.
They trainers told the dolphins to look at it, that's all they had to do. And they only told one dolphin to look at it. The rest came on their own and decided to stick around, because they were sincerely interested in it.
Never! I have a small zoo living in my home plus 2 Pleos. They can never replace any of them. Just as my dogs can't replace my cats and my cats can't replace my bearded dragon. Each pet, including the Pleos has a place in my heart and time out of my day. :)
If this was in sea world orlanda I believe I was there ,you seemed very happy from the positive reactions

Thanks for the recommendation and video response! That is a beautiful video!
sirensgrotto 3 years ago
Utterly lovely. Whose music is that?
BigBirdsCuz 3 years ago
Oops! Just saw the credits. Dolphins would have spotted
them sooner!

Is Pixie a wannabe Sea Monster like Nessie (Loch Ness)? Hey Siren. :)
roschler 3 years ago
Yeah, I think she was wishing she could swim at that point. But I think the dolphins were wishing it even more. They pressed their beaks and heads against the glass so many times.

What a fabulous video!
I'll have to take my AIBO to a SeaWorld here in England and see what he makes of it hehe
Thank you so much for sharing!
sassythomas 3 years ago
If possible, please video tape AIBO at SeaWorld! I would LOVE to see more videos like this from other people! :D

Although it would probably damage it the pleo
would probably work for a short time in the water as it is low voltage. (same as a car lights will stay on if it sinks underwater)
that would be a very interesting follow up filmed through the glass as diver would contaminate experiment.
montgomeryrichard 3 years ago
I doubt Pleo would work the moment it was submerged. Car lights and gears are totally two different things. I have no doubt the gears would instantly die, especially in water with such high salinity. But I know the trainers said they would have loved to have a waterproof Pleo, a Pleisosaur one.

I agree, which means we'll both get blocked as well. :D

Nah, cause every time of you decide to argue with me, it just sends my comment amount sky high. So please, stay around for a while and make total fools of yourself. I love to be amused by such simple things.
sirensgrotto 3 years ago
Marketing scam....sure....I am a full time employee of a pet store in Florida. Far from Ugobe and I get paid for none of it. So your assumptions and conspiracy theories are pathetic. And no, I won't block you kind of trolls because you amuse myself and others with your idiocy. So what will you say next? That I must be the creator's illegitimate daughter and that is why I like to share Pleo?
sirensgrotto 3 years ago
I think that PLEO reminds them of something from/in the past??? interesting!!! thank you
azvezdev 3 years ago 2
I think the movement of the toy is very close to the movement of a young animal...unsure, unsteady, and cleverly curious. The dolphins are naturally attracted to that.
Kattttnip1 3 years ago 2
Very interesting, i wonder if the dolphins are responding to any electrical frequencies/int/noise coming from Pleo.
TorxT3D 3 years ago 2
Not sure, it makes me wonder too. However, I do not believe their echolocation can pass through that glass, so if that is the case, they may believe Pleo was a living creature. Its hard to say.

That's so cute how the dolphins reacted. :D

ive wanted one for awhile too...

Clever marketing done here. A well rehearsed video with a very familiar looking kid in it. It's a toy and it cannot interact with it's surroundings, I know I own one too.
glinglo 3 years ago
Marketing for whom? Me? I make no money from this. If I did, I would be at Sea World every week. And also, its not the Pleo's reactions that is awesome, its the dolphin's reactions.
sirensgrotto 3 years ago
That's a great video, very interesting interaction between technology and wildlife. Excellent choice of music for the subject matter too, this was a very well done video. I enjoyed watching it, thanks for sharing it with us!

I've been wanting a Pleo...
Did park security look at you weird when you brought your Pleo in through bag check, or did they just see it as some toy?
petterz 3 years ago
Park security told me, "Did you know you have a dinosaur in your backpack?" lol
sirensgrotto 3 years ago
so did you told him that your not going to throw Pleo in the water?
englishjoann 3 years ago
I never brought Pleo near the water. The top of the tank is open, so people can feed and pet them, but sometimes the dolphins get excited and splash, so I never brought Pleo near that area. Or any area she may have been splashed at. Shamu show, we sat in the nosebleed seats, but the Pleos still enjoyed the show, especially the music.
sirensgrotto 3 years ago
oh I get it

o.0 is this a plush or something?

Nope, its a robot. Feels rubbery. Not a plushie :)

SergeantPepper8 3 years ago
It is called a Pleo. It is a robotic dinosaur "pet". Check out the website I have listed to the right of the video for more info

Cute! :)
KittenKats2 3 years ago
what kind of animal is Pleo?
KittenKats2 3 years ago
Technically, a camarasaurus. It is a species of dinosaur found in the USA and one of the more popular fossils to find. :)
sirensgrotto 3 years ago
Hey Siren, Engadget and a few others picked up my submission of your video so expect your view count and comment count to jump up a bit. Say Hi to Pixie and Crusoe for me.

OMG! Really?! Wow! Thanks Roschler! You rock!

at 1:49 its so cute how the dolphins checkout pleo. It's almost like they were trying to talk to it and say "hi who are you" lol

My Pleo gives the same reactions standing in front of a pillow.
glinglo 3 years ago
Its the reactions of the DOLPHINS I found amazing more than Pleo's reaction. This was no publicity stunt. That is my Pleo, my video. I taped the whole thing and edited it together to share it with others. I am sorry you have turned to trolling my Pleo videos to feed your needs. You've been blocked so you can stop insulting me and others who find beauty in things like this.
sirensgrotto 3 years ago
But how many times have you seen dolphins react like this to a robotic dinosaur? That is the magic of the moment. Not how Pleo reacts, how the dolphins react.
sirensgrotto 3 years ago

Sorry, but there's nothing impressive about failing for 15 minutes to get the dolphins attention, then getting a trainer to TELL the dolphins to look at the thing.
I'm going to go watch those sea otters hold hands again.
strangis 3 years ago
NO...they told ONE dolphin to LOOK at it. That is the behavior. From that point on, THEY decide to stay or go. Only ONE was rewarded with a blow from the trainer's whistle. The rest came because they saw/heard the other dolphin looking at something interesting. From the moment the first dolphin looked at it, it was the dolphins free will to look at it. The trainers did nothing, but laugh and coo about how they responded. Telling me who was who and what body language they had.
sirensgrotto 3 years ago
They trainers told the dolphins to look at it, that's all they had to do. And they only told one dolphin to look at it. The rest came on their own and decided to stick around, because they were sincerely interested in it.

wow. great video/experiment. i want a pleo now :)

Nice distraction. People trade machines for the real pets these days?
atlanticus 3 years ago
Never! I have a small zoo living in my home plus 2 Pleos. They can never replace any of them. Just as my dogs can't replace my cats and my cats can't replace my bearded dragon. Each pet, including the Pleos has a place in my heart and time out of my day. :)
