John's wrong, it doesn't sound like "one continuous piece", at least not when he plays it. When he plays a piece with tremelo you can hear every god damned note clear as crystal. This man's technique is ungodly, I call the Paganini accusation, this man sold his soul to the devil.

@HeavyFrozn Go to wiki and look up Francisco Tarrega and find information about his music and how he was introduced to music etc and they might also have a list of compositions too. =)
John Williams playing makes me feel the longing to learn the guitar. I chose the piano years ago and do not regret it, but wish I could have believed in my ability to have learned classical guitar as well. Thank you for these great videos.
@ScottSeverance I agree, but this was part of a documentary on JW by the South Bank Show in about 1992 or 93. At least its Williams speaking giving his opinion.
I do not think that I play better than him and I admit he is one of the best guitarists. However, in this specific interpretetion his tremolos lack rythm.
I find it funny that some people criticize Williams' playing and they believe they're masters because they can play medium difficulty pieces badly, any guitar player would give anything to get such an amazing sound and technique, and if people find this interpretation lacking feeling they know nothing about music at all.
Usually the people who say things like, "There's no feeling in it." have been playing for maybe a year....Or they've been playing for a while and just haven't actually learned anything other than Jimi Hendrix and AC/DC songs to impress their buddies. (Not that impressive btw.) You sir, are 100% correct, and I agree with you, fully.
@jllobet I totally agree with you...He is to classical guitar what Sabicas is to Flamenco! His tonal quality is the cleanest and sweetest of all! I love him to death! He has rather small hands compared to Segovia. Go figure!
@jllobet John Williams is perfection itself. Musical perfection. Technical perfection. His music is beyond criticism. This world should be grateful that he was born into it. His music and his playing sometimes brings tears to my eyes.
I find that this version, although displaying great skill with the right hand tremolando, is lacking a great deal of emotion and feeling. In my opinion, Pepe Romero plays it the best.
@theguitarist0069 that's a given. I find a lot with John Williams' performances they are very impressive but lack the emotions the pieces really need; he seems to approach guitar playing more as a technical science rather than an art form. Still, if I had John Williams' talent I wouldn't be complaining; I would just look up the word 'rubato.'
@jakethwaites -- I actually find JW's rubato tasteful and stylistically appropriate, with no lack of emotion at all. I think a lot of guitarists (including famous ones) wallow in the kind of rubato that if you transferred it to any other instrument, it would sound totally tacky.
alguna noche de su vida francisco tárrega habrá dormido en los brazos de Dios y al despertar compuso ésta obra maravillosa,de otra manera no imagino tanta belleza hecha música
SUch a beautiful piece of music, The guitar can be such a beautiful instrument when placed in the hands of a master, and yet it is so horribly mistreated when used in pop music!
@JimiTheRolIinFloyder Yeah, horrible, what a terrible guitarist John Williams is, I await your version of this song with anticipation. Please, do send me the video once you've got it recorded.
@JimiTheRolIinFloyder Yes, horrible tremolo, what a terrible guitarist John Williams is... I look forward to watching your version of this song so you can show him how it's done.
@bizarrefruit Im not saying John Williams is a terrible guitarist but can't you hear the tremolo? It sounds like a running horse. It's supposed to sound like dripping water. Im just saying that John Williams could have done this alot better.
@JimiTheRolIinFloyder In fact...Ideal tremelo is to sound as crisp and as clear as possible for each note, like marbles dropping on a plate in even pace - this is how proffesional classical guitar teachers or masters will teach the student to do, except it is very hard, patience patience patience. The muddling of tremelo you hear in other recordings are due to reverb, the tremelo itself should be crisp and clear.
Assisi is the perfect picture for that song. I may be wrong of where this video is at.. but i went to Assisi about a year ago and instantly fell in love with it. its a beautiful city and this peice paints the picture flawlessly. i love it.
I dont think the word mechanical can be used to describe his playing. Christopher Parkening is mechanical. When John plays you can hear the music breathing. In my opinion he is the finest classical guitarist alive.
I don't know why some people say that john williams is mechanical... is that a myth? because if you don't look at his serious face, you'll listen the most beatiful interpretation of this song...
John Williams and Julian Bream renditions or Recuerdos de la Alhambra are the two best ones IMO. They are the masters of their own respective work. Like water...
@Krawl1989 the difference is John Williams and most classical trained musicians can play whatever Paco de Lucia plays with just a few hours of practice. Try to get Paco de Lucia playing Bach fuges or any barroque contrapunctual masterpiece and you'll see how long it takes for him to play it like a 3rd year music college student... let alone like J. Williams, J. Bream, Narciso Yepes or any other musician with a thorough musical knowledge and technique.
Learning this now, I've only been playing for a year....... but my tremolo is real natural. Teacher says its a "gift". So been working more on discipline, looking to master the classical guitar some day.
mr "swinger", Mr Williams is not a dude and you are not able to burst any bubble, let alone comment on one of the most esteemed guitar players alive. A softening or slowing down of tremelo does not make it "not constant", quite the opposite, it needs complete control. Well let me judge this and you..swing elsewhere ?
complete relaxation of the right hand, the constant tremelo, the thumb independent, added the emotion. Many are confused and believe thechnique and intellect rule out emotion. the ultimate guitar piece played by arguably the best guitar player on a classical guitar. Tapping, arpeggios and other techniques were onlhy invented by people that do not know how to play with their fingers...anyone with a pick who wants to play this...??
@Dubaiman123 sorry but did u hear the dude, thumb is completely dependent and tremelo is not constant. sorry to burst you bubble its just the technique
@theswinger it is called "tremolo", not "tremelo". Williams is with Segovia the best ever (Ana Vidovic will get there soon). And you are exactly... who????
@Bostero3771 and you are exactly who? the spelling police? did I ever have a go at John Williams, the guys a legend. just informing gronkus down there that for 'tremolo' to be constant it needs to be constant, as opposed to perhaps consistant. and who put you in charge of the great classical guitarist list anyway
@theswinger "for tremolo to be constant it needs to be constant"?? WOW!!! that is quite a statement!!! You may get an award for that... keep participating... and by the way, the "spelling police" says it is "consistent" not "consistant".
as for those who say williams is too mechanical, i would say that bringing a master down a level seems an attempt to raise themselves up a level. maybe he doesn't vary the tempo or slur unnecessary notes, but i would say from watching him play and hearing him talk about various pieces (and looking at his varied and at times experimental musical history) one can see that he very much has a passion for music of all sorts, as well as undeniable precision.
@afoolonahill no but they are right it misses on him romance on when playing. hes more mechanical on the ritms thats why he rarely fails a ritm or a note. he is the contrary of Segovia.Segovia is more romantic when playing, but not very follower of the right ritm of the song. in my opinion Segovia is the king.Williams is the king os 21 century.
1:51 The perfect tremelo. Williams easily has the best right hand technique out there, as a 14 year old I aspire to be able to control the strings like him. In terms of posture and technique, there is no better role model.
@fabregas213 Don't forget his sound and interpretation. In my opinion Williams not only has the best technique and sound ever, but he is also the best musician among classical guitarists, the way he adapts to the pieces he plays is just perfect =)
The first time Andres Segovia heard John Williams play, he stated that Williams, then aged 18, was to be the new guitar king. Anyone who disagrees does not know what it is all about...
@klasikindo Yes - superb rendition. But also listen to Chet Atkins version w/ Boston Pops (who sit silently while he plays). A self-taught guitarist, famous for his "country pickin" finger style, Atkins in his later years moved into classical, semi-classical and acoustic guitar interpretations of popular songs (Lennon's "Imagine" MacLean's "Vincent", Autumn Leaves and so on. An amazing, versatile and humble talent who inspired many (example: Mark Knopfler)
@greencircleclassy Actually, there are several arrangements of Stairway to Heaven for classical guitar, all of which sound good. Look up Per-Olov Kindgren. He plays a good one.
It took me 5 days to learn and memorize recuerdos de la alhambra in my 4 years of experience...by the way, Im not a proffesional but I know it will take me some time to play this piece perfect with no mistakes.
The best guitarist in the world does not exist.John Wiliams for example, does not know to play flamenco, therefore can not be the best in the world ....Paco de lucia not know to play rock etc.
Dear VMGIAN, that's when specialty comes in. Can you tell that there is no great surgeon in the world because none of them knows how to operate stomach and eye. I hope you see what I am trying to say. :)
The best guitarist in the world does not exist.John Wiliams for example, does not know to play flamenco, therefore can not be the best in the world ....Paco de Lucia not know to play rock and etc..
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Yeah and some "educated" people think that music is only perfect tecnhique and machine playing without boldness ,music in nothing without feeling and even mistakes are forgiven ,machine playing is not forgivable,Segovia was at the top in terms of feeling sound and interpration
The great thing about this beautiful piece is that it's not beyond the range of the amateur player and something reasonable to aim for. Unlike the impossible 'Asturias'.
Not the best tremolo. Average. But it is Williams, that means i like

I have listened other great guitarrists perform this same piece.
Andres Segovia and Narciso Yepes are great, too. The colour is different, though.
But others have some problems: Emmanuel Rossfelder is far too busy with it and
Ana Vidovic either has a worse guitar or the recording is not of the same quality.
Pepe Romero has the same problem.

Without question the single most beautiful composition for classical guitar. I never get sick of hearing Recuerdos de la Alhambra.

I actually think that Johannes Mollers version is better but thats just me

1:51 The perfect tremelo. Williams easily has the best right hand technique out there, as a 14 year old I aspire to be able to control the strings like him. In terms of posture and technique, there is no better role model.
fabregas213 1 year ago
@fabregas213 Don't forget his sound and interpretation. In my opinion Williams not only has the best technique and sound ever, but he is also the best musician among classical guitarists, the way he adapts to the pieces he plays is just perfect =)

Prince...King...? This guy rocks!

@WDemMusic should have given him an electric guitar he would have went from prince to king to god

The first time Andres Segovia heard John Williams play, he stated that Williams, then aged 18, was to be the new guitar king. Anyone who disagrees does not know what it is all about...

this is THE BEST recuerdos i have ever heard even better than andres segovia
klasikindo 1 year ago 20
@klasikindo but the tremolo is not constant? It's like in sets instead of flowing water. No offence. I admire Mr Williams as much as anybody else :)

@klasikindo Search this theme by Pepe Romero. That is the best for me

@klasikindo The Best is The Narciso Yepe's version¡¡
jalqui6 9 months ago
@klasikindo No doubt. Slightly different, but same level as Pepe Romero...

An amazing, versatile and humble talent who inspired many (example: Mark Knopfler)

this is like the stairway to heaven of classical guitar haha

@greencircleclassy Actually, there are several arrangements of Stairway to Heaven for classical guitar, all of which sound good. Look up Per-Olov Kindgren. He plays a good one.

Yeah and some "educated" people think that music is only perfect tecnhique and machine playing without boldness ,music in nothing without feeling and even mistakes are forgiven ,machine playing is not forgivable,Segovia was at the top in terms of feeling sound and interpration
tuxedomoon 2 years ago
The great thing about this beautiful piece is that it's not beyond the range of the amateur player and something reasonable to aim for. Unlike the impossible 'Asturias'.
