This song by Rita Martinson is real "soul". Part of the genre of soul music. I am ashamed that I never heard of her until January 9, 2011. Where did that beautiful voice go? All we hear on the radio and TV nowadays is Beyonce and Rihanna singing about things that often do not matter much. The true history of the sixties and the Vietnam war has been either destroyed or rewritten by thoes who do not want the truth to infect the minds of the newer generations. Peoples: Evil rules this world!
@1stMusikLuvR doesn't love rule? ... because it is all around? But evil is acting up as usual ... trying to make us think it is stronger than it really is?
"FTA" is shown on The Sundance Channel from time to time, so if you can't find it on home video, you might catch it on cable. Such a great film and that's a wonderful, moving song by Rita Martinson!
this is multi-kulti ( sry for German abbs.) This girl has it all with her song.. plz let the world grab it get it, we need "love". soldiers in the field, hats up for U guys, U defend what we recall freedom. don't listen to politicians
They do. Attend a few and you'll see. They are just not televised they way they used to be. The media wants to downplay the level of protests. The media is working for the gov. The gov wants access to as much land, assets of other countries, etc. They will never be satisfied with what they have.
This performance is perfect. It's hard to remember there was a time when music was heartfelt, not strategically aimed at a career in the style of American Idol. Her simple explanation for her lyrics and sentiments; her beautiful voice; her beautiful face reaching for the higher notes; the drama that this is her one star performance in a small career (she did some later backup vocals with Holly Near). We want to see more from her; but at least we have this single perfect performance.
talked to a viet vet on the train the other day....he saw one of the fta shows....he said when rita sang you could of heard a pin drop...................
Even though I was very much alive and fighting against the Vietnam Insanity, I was totally unaware of this extraordinary talent. Where is she now? What other work is available?
@chiledoug Same here. One problem is that Jane Fonda had almost all of the original copies of the FTA film destroyed and popular knowledge/awareness of the FTA tour all but disappeared. A friend of mine has the original VHS from the 70s. You should check out the documentary Sir, No Sir! if you haven't already.
@binhthanhvo How do you know that Jane Fonda and/or her family had the video repressed? The film was an embarrassment to Nixon and his thugs in the MPAA, etc. And the movie industry was horrified that Jane Fonda had actually shot at American planes from North Vietnam. Lots of people in high places wanted it gone. From what I've seen, Fonda is pretty cool.
@shonangreg The friend who has the original copies of the film told me. This person circulated copies of this to U.S. troops in Iraq and helped organize and distribute the Vietnam-era GI paper "Vietnam GI" that had 10,000 recipients in Viet Nam itself. Fonda said in the 80s she regretted appearing in the seat of a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun and tried to bury her radical past in the post-war period. I don't blame her or judge her. Lots of people did the same thing. Reaganism was hell.
Wow! moving, touching and relevant to today. It seems that 40 years later, those in the US administration are still 'Spreading Democracy'. I will post this to all I know.
Dave Cline opened SNS in Philly. My job was to distribute VVAW newspapers, THE VETERAN, after the 35 shows over the 1 week span THE RITZ showed the movie.
I could've walked into the Theater, last moment, and distributed the paper, but 35 times, I went in 12 minutes BEFORE the end, to see and hear Rita. Our group, Del Val Vets, have shown "Sir, No Sir!" another 25 times.
This video makes it SO MUCH EASIER for this 'Nam Vet to feel Rita, THE NEXT 60 TIMES!
An unforgetable and consolating song for soldiers
