this video was flat out banned in south africa in 1989/90 - i can sorta see why...still, the banning didn't hurt it from becoming one of the top radio tunes of 1990
I remember seeing this video on The James Whale Video Show one friday night / Sat morning. The video was rated as X by the censors, so it didn't get any more tv promotion and it failed to sell in the record shops. I bought the vinyl LP and still have it... It's a true Steinman classic, no matter who sings it. However Celine Dion makes me want to puke. She murders every song that she covers. This is the original and in my opinion, the best.
Remember this was recorded and broadcast around twenty years ago. Production and broadcast facilities have improved immeasurably since then so newer versions will sound better. Original Sin as a CD remains one of my favourites and few of the tracks have been recorded better than the original artists.
Meat Loaf's version is not better, no version touches this one. And Meat Loaf's effort at The Future Ain't What It Used To Be is simply dire compared to the original. The only one from this album he does a good job on is Good Girls Go To Heaven.
I love this song, but I find myself gravitating more to Celine's version, though I feel the musical arrangement in this version is so much more passionate. Plus Celine's video looks less like a porn lol
This version is by far the best one above the others that followed. A pity that is such an unknown album and such a strange video.
Thanks for uploading this video, I was looking for it. Although the quality is terrible it's better than nothing since is the only one I have found after several weeks of search.
I believe there is a DVD of this, I wish someone could rip it and upload it, since the only other option to see it is MTV-UK, and they don't allow this video to be played outside the UK.
No it isn't. Celine doesn't sing Sacred Pleasure and there are no guitar instrumental breaks in her version, only piano ones.
Apart from the change of vocalist from Elaine Caswell though, all the other instrumentalists on Celine's version were the same as this one. Elaine Caswell even sings backing vocals on some other songs on Celine's album but not on this one.
Wow...memories! I loved the James Whale Radio Show, it was on every Friday night back in the late 80's, & I never missed it. I clearly remember when he played this video, & I recorded it onto vhs, too! The first time I heard the song...a classic!
and...I must say it's no wonder this song only charted at 39 or something like that in 1989. Celines' was MUCH MUCH MUCH better. And while I respect Meatloaf and love most of his music....it is still Celine's...sorry.
I love Celine very very much and I always thought that she's the best in covers, but now I realised that this song sounds better in original performance. Because this singer (don't know her name) gives the song ambiguous meaning, and for me it's wonderful. And she also has beautiful voice, not less than Celine's.
and the more I watch I have to say that the 3 different singers took upon 3 differnt meanings of the song. One was missing her belated lover, this one is pushing and interacial love, and meatloaf's is going back to Steinman's original thoughts as well as his own for this song: a strong female vocal and a duet portraying death and the insatiable love which transcends life and death.
This video really is "something else," as the guy said at the end. The song and video are better than Celine Dion's version, although I like Celine's version as well.
The song was written for Meatloaf for Bat Out of Hell II, but when Meatloaf decided to save it for another album, Jim Steinman gave it to his female group Pandora's Box(led by Ellen Foley)in 1989. Celine Dion did 2 versions of the song for her album Falling Into You in 1995 and than Meatloaf got M2M sing Raven in 2006 to do the last. All got music videos. This version's video was made around 1989 or 1990
I agree with Ricksterj65, "Original Sin" was a truly wonderful album when it came out in 1989; it cost a fortune to make and it bombed spectacularly. Ready for rediscovery methinks.....
I have the video clip on DVD as it and the Good Girls video were bonuses on the recently reissued Pandora's Box album--but they're in PAL and I can't figure out how to upload on here :( they're in great quality
The album is stunning--most of the songs ended up being re-recorded later by Meatloaf, Celine and Steinman's other crew. But the original is best I think
Oh, do you have it? It would be great if you could convert it to avi using TMPGEnc Xpress and then upload it, since there seems to be no high quality (and complete version) of this vid anywhere :(

YES! This is the original and the BEST version. So what that it was originally written for Meat Loaf? Pandora's Box got to it first and this stomps on his version any day of the week!
I just recently got Pandora's box version of this song, and I must say that it is my favorite version of the three. Both this one and the Celine Dion version are very similar, this one beat out Celine's because it's just more Jim Stienman. This version has that epic stadium rock feel that the other two are lacking. I think this video copied Total Eclipse of the Heart a little. What's with the half naked guy's in leather?
This is only the second time seeing this video! The images are just the way I remember ancient rites / Hopital ER - awesome. This version of the song is best - it's my favourite song of all time ... but ... if you edit in the guitar solos into Celine's track the whole feel of her version improves!! p.s. They have just re-issued the Pandora's Box CD with a DVD of other videos from the album plus a Jim Steinman interview!
This song/ video was released around October 1989. The Ken Russell video was filmed at Pinewood Studios, and I think it was banned from regular TV, hence this late night screening on the James Whale Show. Great version of this song though.
Pandora's Box's Original Sin ia a great Lost album. The album should have sold as many as Bat out of Hell, a total injustice, Steinman must have been gutted that it didnt sell big time. Meat Loaf has now recored five of the tracks but I prefer the Pandors Box versions. Treat yourself, put the CD on, turn out the lights, crank up the volume and don't worry about the neighbours. Fantastic

Pandora's is the most rocky, Celine's is the most ballad/romantic, Meat Loaf's is the most epic. IMO

Another one Jims Epics.
By far the best version IMHO.
He calls his songs his Children and is very protective of them.
