Well, i'm about to begin my "long term test report" and.....................well, um, i'm bored after riding 3 miles, so i'll just do 7 or 8 jumps for you.
BMW R1200GS is great bike, but i would recomend some dirt bike, to do things like this. BMW is simply too big and heavy for this things. It would be much funnier on dirtbike, i guess. :)
'couldn't do that on an r6 could you' i've rode with this guy who went trail blazing on his r1 for fun, complete with jumps and a creek crossing, was completely stupid but it worked, was actually pretty impressive-- moral of the story, any bike is just hype it's all about who's behind the handle bars--
You need the heavier bike to do the long distance type of touring that this bike is made for ......the typical old dirt bike isn't stout enough to handle everything that is required of it....including luggage accessories.
ive watch a snipit of a r1 going crosscountry just coz it can do it doesnt mean it should be done that thing is big bulky and neally bottomin the shocks out on like humps... if u wanted adventure type bike u would get someone more suited thats more of a cruiser i spose just my 5cents
Well when you spend that kind of money for a bike, plus the accessories there isn't a whole lot left over to buy a normal dirt bike to play in dirt with.
Dirt bike cant give you all that what a BMW Adventure bike can give you. Have you heard how a dirt bike sounds, your opinion is right when it comes to cost, like to play only in dirt and doing some short trips and stunts, its OK, but not adventure, surely, you dont even have proper seat on a dirt bike, cause you generally dont sit and ride it, you are standing with knees bent most of the time.....
Have you seen the TV show called " Around the world in 90 Days " am not sure if its right. Ewan Mc Gregor was a biker in it along with his best friend. They went around the world, thats a pretty long journey to do. They both used BMWs. It was seriously reliable. They had loaded it with almost everything they needed to make that journey. Going off the pavement is fun and adventure. But the adventure is better with proper equipment no matter how short or light is your bike or your luggage is.
The crew was the camera crew. They ( camera crew ) only came in when they were called for help or rescuing them. My simple verdict is, if you are going on a long adventure, thats something like an interstate ride with a group of friends which includes camping etc etc then, bikes like BMW adventure bikes are most appropriate. If you want to go to some nearby forest and have fun then the dirt bike is also fun. Adventure = Fun. No matter short or long.
Unfortunately this video gives the wrong impression of the bike's intended use. It's not a stunt bike.. not by a long shot. What you can't do with a dirt bike is to load it up with kit.
So yes, its important to point out that it's not a dirt bike. It's a fuel injected pack mule with knobby tires.
try this on a varadero 125 lol you get to about 40 mph on a dirt track and the rear wheels just seem to dig down and become a beast now that is a learner friendly trail bike:L
you could do them trails and jumps on any bike... altho you may bottom out :P
hell some of the roads in UK ARE like that, just a narrow gravel track (least they are where i live) and my dad has no problems with his FJ1100 on them.
That was definitely a great vid, minus the exception of the R6 remark, I have gone thru 3 inch deep gravel, at speeds approaching 60 mph, with minimal slippage.
Who could'nt, ask the robbers who steal em mate! You should watch Sven's France series, he can park his two for one in Car Park's! LOL. That aint made for jumping bridges, may look good on camera (No Way), but come on. Get a KTM for that!
oh dear, what a waste of money. The reason we couldn't do that on an R6 is because we don't actually care and/or want a bike like that. Get an R6 or R1 for the roads and then buy a proper off road machine like a suzuki RM-z450. Or even better just get an R1 and take that off road, Nick Sanders proved that could work as he took his round the world!

BMW´s "GS" isn´t the perfect bike for anything, but it can do everything. And that´s something very few bikes can. Enough said.

You could probably do that 'off-roading' on a Fireblade.

So all those guys in "Mondo Enduro" that went around the world on 350cc bikes (with luggage), plus the hundreds of others have weak bikes?

Guess all those people doing the Cross Country USA on the TAT trails must be doing it wrong....

So, what do you say ?
mshl8188 2 years ago
If you read the ride reports, 90% or more say... to go off the pavement its better to go as light as possible.

Yes..they had full support crew for help upon getting stuck, etc...the better one to see is "Mondo Enduro"
