was there ever a better dancing team i still laugh at myself tryinng to copy the great fred dancing with the devine cyd the grace and charm was wonderfull
This is incredible. Try watching it on mute, but playing totally different music in the background. 95% of the time, the new music actually fits. My personal favorite is "You're Just Too Good to be True" (the broadway version, from Jersey Boys). I have lost count of how many times i've watched this.
I don't know how many times I saw and enjoyed this video and how many more I will see it, but it is so wonderful to see Charisse and Astaire dancing perfectly this song that I can:t stop to see them.Beautiful! and thank to Chocolate Ninj4 to positing it( even after two years) Thanks!!!
There were just so many great dance scenes, it is hard to say which one was the best. But this one with Cyd and Fred was by far my personal favourite.
You swoon at the total romance of it all--Cyd/Fred, the song, the setting. Time for us all to hightail it to that famous bridge in Central park and dance like this (we hope) with our significant others--and we'll play this song on a boom box. The hiphops mouths will drop!! 'Ya mean there was dancing before break dancing??" Duh--yeah!!
I can remember when I was a ten year old boy who, naturally, thought girls were icky. Then I saw Cyd Charisse in a movie. She aged me three years right then and there.
@ishouldntbeyoutubing Same here. All my girlfriends since my adolescence have been either Cyd Charisse look-alikes or Audrey Hepburn look-alikes. I'm 72 and still looking. I was married once, though. She was the Audrey Hepburn look-alike (but completely crazy. Hey, so am I for expecting such perfection!)
I was brought up during the golden years of Hollywood, they were sheer magic and I still love the films and music of this period. Thank you for positing this.....
This romantic dance between Fred and Cyd is a perfect example of the type of movie I grew up loving. I'll never forget the impact this dance had on me. I have always admired dancers. It was movies like this one that made me love dancing. I'm so glad you posted this video..nothing can beat seeing it on a large screen in a darkened theatre with a terrific sound system but this is still a treat.
To those who love the "great Art", this is one of the greatest moments of all time, only comparable to the heights of Wagner's Tristan and Isolde or a great painting composition. True, it is "only" a picture, but not many operas, neither many paintings can achieve the deep emotion that this scene brings out to millions of viewers....forever
i'm not sure i'd want to compare it to Wagner as I dislike most of Wagner. But I agree; it's almost impossible to think of a single other dance sequence ever filmed that can compare to this for awe inspiring perfection.
This is the only one of Astaire's 23 greatest duets that was without Ginger Rogers. It's the one duet where his partners style meshes the best with Astaire's simple and elegant style. According to the dance critics Hyam, Croce and Mueller, Charisse's work with Astaire later became very exhibitionistic...even a bit vulgar. But this dance is considered by all, to be an absolute masterpiece, from beginning to end. Like all other great duets, this is about one soul inhabiting two bodies.
Half of the goddamned song is missing. why do these music editors lop off best parts of the work? not the full song that the writers wrote. listen to the original from c. 1931.
Exactly!! I've always called this a courtship dance- perhaps the best "falling-in-love" dance that Astaire ever did. And what a departure this is from his tuxedoed duets in the RKO-era 30's; here they are both in elegant summer white, and Charisse makes the most of a simple flared dress and ballet flats, which allows her to REALLY dance without towering over Astaire. It is tease, foreplay, lovemaking, and climax- all in the span of three minutes. Beautiful.
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, how wonderful.

fred and ginger were spectacular. the difference here is that ginger learned how
to dance while cyd charisse, like astaire himself, was born to dance. it may not
be a huge difference but watch this again and you know it's there.
