For you people being negative, get a life. Those folds mean something to someone, so they gave words to express. Just like your expressing how much lack of respect you have. Get a life and look up something else. Why did you even search and comment. Your a joke! Really!
the meaning of the folds have been assigned by numerous entities, after the fact. the truth is mathmatical, the number of folds are directly proportional to the size of the flag
There is no "official" meaning to the folds, but meanings have been ascribed to the folds. It is not anyone's place to say the folds have no meaning, because to many of us who have served, many of us who have lost loved ones, and many others, if we fell the folds have meaning, if we read words to that effect at the folding of the flag at a funeral, then it has meaning, if only to ourselves. I will be performing a flag-folding ceremony for my grandfather's service tomorrow, and will be reading.
It's not hear-say--I'm a military member and I know my history. In fact I had to fold the flag for my grandfather's funeral less than a month ago. The folds were to be read until my grandmother declined due to being an agnostic and some of the folds were related to Christianity. They are nationally recognized, even if they were added later to add meaning to the already-standardized-and-existing 13 folds.
@JassiYashoko Just because you are a military member does not make you right. Go to the USAF Honor Guard site under the base honor guard tab, click the link right below the BHG badge, it will direct you to your outlook with an email set in your To: box. Email the USAF Honor Guard and ask them yourself. They would know better than anyone since they are the epitomy of core US traditions and ceremonies. There is no meaning to the flag folds and they will tell you the same thing.
@BariDWT Actually, there is. The meanings were assigned AFTER it was decided to have thirteen folds to standardize the folding of the flag, but they are legitimately recognized by all the uniformed services. They are not all accurately described here, as some of them are changed slightly, but there are thirteen nationally recognized symbols for the thirteen folds. They are often asked to be read as the burial flag is folded at a military funeral.
@JassiYashoko Wrong. Someone decided upon themself to add fluff to their flag folding ceremony and it happen to be well written so people caught on to it. It is still just hear-say. It has never been approved by any part of this government or military branch to adopt this script as official.
Thank you so much for this! My 9 and 6 yr old were just asking about this! It was not only easy to see and understand, but I love that you gave the meanings of the folds as well! Thank you!
