  • fantastic reminder of the time and who all had THAT haircut?? hahahaha

  • This track is a load of tosh and I cannot stand it, and it is guff.

  • @rojblake82 ..apart from that, ok ?

  • I used to have such a crush on both of these lead singers and I was only about 6. Oh dear.

  • It's a pity that this was viewed as 80s tacky pop. To my aged ears the musicianship involved was amazing. John Du Prez was quite something. Get a load of David Jaymes' bass and that's get before you get to the criminally underrated voice that was Mick Mullins.

  • The drummer is my drumming teacher!

  • OMG-David James-the stuff of my teenage dreams :)

  • I danced this in Palace (Paris) on New Year's Eve!!!

  • great and catchy tune..

  • yep its not got any better, still made them a few quid

  • fab3333cccccc333333333

  • great song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I so wanted to look like these guys....so glad I didnt lol great tune!!!

  • Me and my friend Cheryl saw them in concert at the Stour Centre in Ashford, Kent at about the time of this performance, brilliant night!! Met them backstage as well!! They were huge in the early 80s! I have this song on 12inch vinyl!!

  • I hated it then and I hate it even more now. What a load of wank.

  • Great song...fantastic memories!!

  • oooooohhhhhh ! Makes me wanna dance!

  • thank god the 80.s were my era

  • wonderful!!

  • @EternalGatherings i remember radio one playing it on the top 40 show just out of intrest i have on 12" best mix of our lives basically a megamix of their hits

  • Modern Romance had it Right because the 80's Certainly were The Best Years of Our Lives.

  • Another British classic, god I miss the 80s

  • Crackin tune 80s fab

  • Oh crap this takes me back.........

  • awww to b 17again

  • I've been looking for this song!!!

  • havn't seen these since I was 13 years old ...... made me feel ready young again... and really old at the same time - LOL :-)

  • One of those songs that simply lifts the spirits!!....a few more (imho) from that era-Making your mind up, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Seven Tears (Goombay Dance Band). Not the greatest songs ever written but ,boy, dont we still love to hear 'em!!!

  • wow - they don't write 'em like this anymore!

  • @boondoggle6 Sadly! :(

  • Absolute genius. Only on Top of the Pops could you find someone playing the trumpet in a big bloody pair of rubber gloves!

  • A GREAT HAPPY SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • I think the trumpet player wrote the music for the One Foot in the Grave theme tune.

  • Fab song. Brings back memories of my childhood too...... The 80's were brilliant!

  • MsJayClay - It was Geoff Deane, such a nice guy.

  • Memories of happy times as a kid - what a great band! In my mind, this still sounds fresh today! Thank you so much for posting this

  • what a way to start the day 80's cheese

  • Thanks for posting this. I had a blue suit identical to the lead vocalist. I wish I still had it - well I wish I could still fit into it !

  • Some of you posters are too uptight and anal. Modern Romance was a fun band, with catchy tunes.

  • I met one of the singers from Modern Romance a while ago..My God did he look different! Just the nicest and loudest character ever. Worse groups than them? Plenty. These guys were fun. Aqua are worse than them, Milli Vanilli were pretty awful. Mel and Kim too...

  • who was it you met?Geoff Deane?

  • LOL! Its a 'queen' fest!, love it!!!

  • I use this song in my english classes where the students have to fill in the blanks and they love this one. They were and still are a good band, nice salsa influence. Gracias amigos !

  • these was once leighton buzzards

  • OMG SO THIS IS MODERN ROMANCE! My aunty dated geoff deane (the lead singer) For ages, but she cheated on him :'/ Bitch, there great :)

  • No she never dont lie.

  • Shut up and read my inbox message, im not going to bother explaining it to you here. Leave me alone, she did for a while and cheated on him, and my mistake it wasnt geoff deane it was the one with the blonde hair next to him. don't know his name.

  • Sorry was just taking the piss.Didnt mean for you sit up all night writing a big long story about it.

  • oh no harm down. I'm a fast typer, maybe you should use your time better, and get a good job or something, instead of winding up young girls on youtube. real shocker actually :|

  • Like punk never happened

  • Yeah, they could be selling butter on TV now like Johnny Rotten. Rock n roll!

  • @badmartianshrew

They WERE punks. Used to be a band called The Leyton Buzzards before they jumped on another opportunistic bandwagon, got themselves some shiny suits and a hairdryer and turned into just about the shittiest band of the early 80s.

  • Shame on them!! I remember Saturday Night Beneath The Plastic Palm Trees...

Regardless, they're probably still dining out on the roayalties from this cak.

  • @badmartianshrew

    Morrisey said (intv w/NME: prolly v/late 83-v.early84)

"There are indeed worse bands than Modern Romance. But can anyone seriously think of one?"

  • THis is a fucking awesome song - my 1st girlfriend bought me a hits 1982 album with this on for xmas that year - I was 13 she was a mature woman of 14 LOL

it brings back memories of a fantastic childhood for me - so its A1 .

  • just cos u don t like it there is no need for petty comments n nastyness! grow up and get a life!

  • i was 14 years old when this came out, ah i remember it well, good times!

  • I love that thing at the end of TOTP 80s videos when they try to throw the name of the band across the screen in innovative ways...

  • greetings can anyone of the MR fans help me out? there was a song of them with the line "what about our roots, what about the stars...". It's not on the Platinum Collection best-of...

  • Hi, yes I think I might know.I believe it was a solo song which Geoff Deane did called "what about romance".

  • ahhhh yes THAT'S IT!!! 1983 on Plastic Palm Tree Records PPT 001 - thank you so much!

  • glad I could help-no problem.

  • They are playing the Newquay Music Festival in West Wales this Sunday if anyone in the area is interested.

  • was the singer in the black suit not a backing singer after this for wham or some other group like that cause I know I have seen him again in background of some other group since Modern romance days

  • that is mick mullins.he has done backing vocals for cliff richard, joni mitchell, brian conley, and joe longthorne among others.

    wonderful singer though.

  • thanks MsJaycjay now I know who is thought I seen him before somewhere it was bugging me - not just good singer good looking too in my opinion

  • he certainly is! I think the blonde one is sexy too!

  • No he hasnt dont lie.

  • i was in second year seniors when this was out..blimey i feel old,lol

  • me too themachman19691. God i feel old but they truly were the best years of our lives.

  • aye they were.these young ones dont know what they missed, lol.think we went away to mold in wales with the school when this was playing on the coach.i know i second that emotion was out as well by japan.aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh the memories

  • Last song to be played at the school disco the year i left in 1983 ,

they are right best years of your life no shit or hassles :-)

  • Finally! I had to dig a little what this song reminded me of so much: "Make this world a little better". Dunno who was the original artist, I know the 80s version by Shari Belafonte...

  • Eh, I really don't care one way or the other though. Yes, you're definitely entitled to your opinion. Sorry I called you out.

  • I like the Baha Men version too.

  • This is the best summer song ever!

  • Do you search out videos like this to assert your manhood? (I'm assuming you are male)

  • You have a very low opinion of males

  • Me? If yes...well, just a low opinion of stupid people, some of which are males.

  • And I have a very low opinion of rude people. Just because I made a comment that you don't agree with, it doesn't make me stupid but your comments about me make you rude.

  • I'm rude? I'm not the one asking how "men can reduce themselves to this?"...right?

  • You called me stupid. In anyone's book, that's being rude.

  • there were actually 4 versions of this including the xms 1.mick is now 1 of cliff richard's backing singers and i was friends with david for a while.where is he now

  • And who can upload "Nothing ever goes the way you planned "? That's a great song too :-)

  • The song title just sums up this decade. Thanks for posting this classic

  • You don't see too many shots of the audience dancing on these TOTP clips, but let's face it, how could you NOT dance to this song? For that matter, WHY would you not dance?

    -MINESWEEP

  • A great song! It was in the charts for weeks back then and yet seems to have been forgotten. Thanks for adding it!

  • Absolutely FUCKING BRILLIANT!! I suffer from periods of clinical depression-hearing this song is better than anything any doctor could prescribe-this track sends my mood into orbit!!!

  • seems a bit bipolar that does. First thing every morning - don't forget now

  • Been needing this on here for a long time. Too much jaunty early 80s music has been forgotten. It was the most tuneful of all pop eras.
