  • dude you already ARE your own religion. you can call it enough one but you are the only one who is you and fits your mold

  • Get a haircut, fucking hippys.

  • Bro u have some really interesting video u need to post more

  • I hear what you're saying. I smoke the occasional bowl and I've dropped a little mdma- but I am a Christian. I am all for some "pick and choose", but if you come across something that you find "contraversial", don't skip it. Meditate on it. I use a Socratic method of self discovery.

  • (1)Tim was a visionary of his time but his ideology is played out. 3:27 he says you need to know what you're doing and why before you reach enlightenment. Call me if I'm wrong but if someone becomes enlightened, it indicates that they know what you're doing and why before hand.If you pay attention, this guy leads you in a circle. I'm not a fan of religion but it's a spiritual cheap shot. The only path this guy suggests to become enlightened is to be born that way.

  • (2) I agree with picking your own god because at that point, you know it's imaginary and you're just getting inspiration from this figure that's suppose to be your better self. I'm going to strive to be like Snakeatillicus. What would my reptilian deity do in this situation.

  • crazy

  • Very interesting -

I've spent the last 19 years thinking about this issue and others like it. 7 Gram Psilocybin Trip BTW

During and after this period I've come to believe what C. S. Lewis writes 'our own religious experiences are like swimming in the ocean, more real that any map (religion) - but if you want to get beyond the sea shore and really travel, you'll find the most complete maps the most helpful.

Sincerely - Matthalamew (youtube matthalamew for further dialog).

  • I read Tim's book The Politics of Ecstasy many moons ago, and the thing he said that clicked and i still remember out of all he wrote was 'the studio set reality' seen when you look at civilization in action lol

I am working on what your interested on to. would be intrestin to share ideas ;)

  • *plastic studio set reality

  • since everyone has/is their own personal god, in the future everyone should have their own personal religion. tim leary is probably the most important pioneer in this field. and what a field.

  • definatly.. great topic to reserect on youtube.

  • I wish there was a video game religion

  • It would be interesting if there were an entheogenic religion that we all could be a part of.

There is the Native American Church but it's not of much use unless you're Native American.

But that's what is beautiful about the entheogenic experience. You don't need a religion to guide you to God. All you need is an open mind and an open heart and you realize that you are God.

  • This is the church of true inner light, but they might even be a division of the Native American Church IIRC.

  • It would be nice if there was such a religion, but then again organized religions seem to have a bad track record. That's probably part of the reason why Leary recommended banding together and forming small clans.

However, Alex Grey's Mysticism can be a very helpful style to reference for those seeking to start their own religion. Deeply rooted in entheogenic inspiration, his work can be a powerful tool to aid in shaping your spiritual beliefs.

  • I think rituals add to the psychedelic experience, but as you say religions can be dangerous. The moment your beliefs become institutionalised they're something that exists beyond yourself and can turn on you. That's why religions based on psychoactives don't make truth claims about too many things other than their sacraments (Church of the Tree of Life, Temple 420,etc).If u want to start a new religion I'd recommend you read first The Time of the Tribes by Mafesoli and then think twice about it.

  • I think we already make our own religions to begin with, it's just a matter of recognizing that you're doing it and then deciding how far you want to take it.

  • Interesting. While I do agree that we all make our own beliefs and it's a question of whether we realize it, I don't see what the motivation would be to build a religion around those beliefs. If the goal is to create a set of rituals then I agree. If the goal is to add validity to psychedelic culture, I think this is not the way to go. If the goal is to moralize or argue towards some truth then I disagree. If the goal is to create an intensional community then u don't need religion for that.

  • So if u're starting a new religion around LSD use and if u're building a set of rituals that help people to trip constructively and productively, then please sign me up and count me in. But IMO, and from reading The Politics of Ecstasy, I think Leary tried to push an entire worldview along with his League of Spiritual Development and I don't feel comfortable with that. I would be very much interested to hear from people who disagree on this.

  • Well remember that no one is saying start the next great world religion, in fact if you managed to do that you would have completely missed the point of all this. "Religions" which you could also call, 'Personal States,' or simply 'Clans' should be between small groups of people that are of a like mind and all have personal connections to one another- You can't trust a leader you can't trip with. Leary recommends that you, "AVOID recruiting and rapid growth." Ironic isn't it?

  • People need to learn to not simply follow the footsteps of rituals, but to actually give them meaning, a microcosmic act of divine creation.

In the end I think the goals we create should be roadmaps for the uninitiated, records that we tried this & sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't, but some people self-actualized by going down this road. Then people can compare the roads to self actualization & hopefully they'll be able to make sense of it all in their own, uniquely meaningful way.

  • Well said! To that I can agree.

  • God

  • Nice discussion! I think more of us need to think about spirituality and religion in this way. The way I look at it, is that instead of dropping out, my beliefs encompass all religions. I believe in every religion equally. I think there's beauty in all of them while at the same time there is negativity in all of them.

I take the positive and meaningful aspects of each religion and incorporate them into my life. The negative aspects I leave behind.
