@48FH I'm in a very similar boat. I recently started listening to radiohead and one of my friends played this song for me. I enjoyed it and I started looking up stuff about it on wikipedia. I feel that thom's explanation is viable except for the devil getting the last laugh. I think that despair that is expressed in this song is the prominent thing, but I don't agree with it being completely hopeless like he says. The only way to escape is sorrow that intense is to "immerse yourself in love".

It's basically saying how you're in this dark tunnel of nothingness and everything is pointless and we're all going to die and fade out anyway, so just "think happy thoughts" and it'll be alright.
