It is more about money than art and the music and has been on a steady inclination towards that goal. Even music artist have made songs about this from the Beegee's hotel California to the whole gunge era and Nu metal like Korn. These days its all about the money. Sure there are a few genuine good songs here and there, but not many.

The '60s was the golden era of rock music, followed by a decline in the 70s, absolutely horrible music in the 80s, before thh Seattle grunge bands and alternative groups like Radiohead and the Smashing Pumpkins renewed interest in music that actually meant something. The late 90s saw its share of garbage (boy bands, Britney Spears), but overally the decade was an objectively great period for music.
