• Anyone see the movie rockstar? It's about this guys life.

  • @NOSfusion No it is not According to the Verve Pipe's FAQ, guitarist and lead singer Brian Vander Ark wrote the song in 1991 about the guilt he felt from his ex-girlfriend committing suicide. However, according to an external interview site, Vander Ark revealed that the suicide was poetic license; the real incident which inspired the song was when his pregnant girlfriend had an abortion.

  • So they got married in the 9th grade

  • What can't he be held responsible for.

  • what made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise

  • This song brings me back to my disastrous first marriage.

  • Jaried Ramblin' Stew Stewart you better sing this song at the Shipwreck Grill!! You sound just like this guy!!!

  • 98.9 Click radio station brought me here. It sucks how all current music sucks so bad compared to 90s music.

  • Look kids, real musicians, real instruments, real music.

  • I WON'T BE HELD RESPONSIBLE!

  • Base of my taste in music, I think 90's songs are better than today's songs.... Other Today's songs dont have meaning, always shouting, and they using bad words in their songs.... Please, bring back how people make songs like 90's songs.... Meaningful, and they don't shout.... Relaxing song... :D

  • I remember hearing this on the radio, back in '98. I miss the 90s.

  • I only know this song cause of jay brannan

  • ahhhhh the good old high school days sure do miss them...senior year!!!!

  • Dude, this is beautiful.

  • Ignoring the typical pessimistic comments, I used to listen to these guys years ago when I Was young and Im just now getting back around to them....Nostalgia Fulfilled

  • If u all want to hear an awesome remix of this song then cone check out my channel it's nice

    Checker out!

  • 90s...best genre of music ever....matter of fact, 90s was the best time period ever...

  • I love the guitar in this song. x)

  • No one cares how old you are and if you like this song or not. Point is, you're listing to it.

  • What has happened to music these days? These guys may have been one hit wonders or whatever, but they had more talent in their pinky fingers than Lil Wayne or Nicki Minaj could ever dream of having.

  • Yeah Nc MUsic

  • do people seriously like this song or is this a joke video or parody or something??? I don't get it

  • @MyEpicPhone its an actual song. its about 2 freshman and one get prego and gets an abortion

  • @bugbug0402 Dude seriously do you not listen to the lyrics at all? A stop of baby's breath and a shoe full of rice? THEY GOT MARRIED fool... not an abortion. He got married too young because she was pregnant and it was a mistake

  • @TheBondagebaby lol.....im laughing because the guy you said was a fool was right.

  • @MyEpicPhone Why would you think it's a parody? I don't get your comment here. What do you think this song is? Yes people seriously like this song. Why wouldn't they?

  • Why do people ruin perfectly good videos with comments at all? Who cares?

  • Why do people always have to put their age in their comments... who cares how old you are... good music is good music!

  • HIMYM?

  • First time I've heard this, great song, but I hope some of the people here will soon realise that great music isn't restricted to a certain era. There are great hidden gems playing music today, you've just got to look for them, this level of quality isn't handed to you on a plate, or radio wave.

  • I love this one girl, i was with her for 6 almost 7 months, she left me because she didnt know what to do, i love her with all of my heart and i would love to have her back into my life, she ment everything to me, i talked to her about everything, and i wanted to spend the rest of my life with her, please let her see this so i can get my love back.

  • @2andrewneff You should stop getting drunk and posting on the internet.

  • tiioodrunk for this songggggggg

  • Too many memories to this song. Almost makes me sad.

  • people only think music is on a decline. there is so much music in each era. however, pretty much all the crappy music from the past isn't listened to anymore. people only remember the good stuff. because we have to sift through the good and the bad music today, we think that it's worse.

  • My chin is shaking from unshed tears. So many unresolved problems suddenly resurfaced and I feel like that insecure teenager again. Damn.

  • *What he says doesn't make you think about high scool*

  • People all have their own opinions about the song but no one can say what he says makes you think about high school if you say it doesn't you didn't have a life then and still don't haha

  • @AllTheLoveGoneBlack The last line of the song is, "We were only fresh," just so you know in case you wanted to edit the lyrics. Anyhow, thanks for the upload! This is the best version since the original video has been blocked in the US. :)

  • i thought this was the verve WTF

Not some shitty teen punk band GET TO FUCK

  • @bonzie88 This is The Verve Pipe. Know your stuff before you decide to start talking crap. Idiot...

  • @trusturtechnolust Obviously i noticed that after i hit play you retard lol

  • I got drunk at Michigan State listening to this shit... I LOVE IT! GO GREEN

  • I've drunk a lot of fucking rot gut whiskey to this song. lol

  • I love this song! Remember it from when I was I freshmen in high school and I just recently turned 30 so its a good memory for me!

  • best part, when the drums first hit....

  • Favorite song of all time it makes me think back of when I was a freshman

  • Dear Youtube:

Bell's Eccentric Cafe is in Kalamazoo, MI, NOT Grand Rapids.

Also, you should check it out.

  • music is a generational response to love/hate unresolved issues

  • <3 one of the best songs ever :D

  • ive always taken him singing about freshmen as being young and naive, not necessarily freshmen in highschool or college. though i suppose he could mean both...

  • I dont care that it was written in the 90s. Im 15 and this is one of my favourite songs.

  • @katie4921 You're awesome.

This song came out when I was 13... I'm 28 now. Still love it.

  • @katie4921 And you have very good taste Katie

  • @18chelsealin You too if you're here to listen.

  • @katie4921 do you even know what the songs about? Do you even know what 90s grunge was about?

  • @katie4921 Good!

  • @katie4921 Me too. Im sixteen and this is one of my fav songs! Really so sad though...it really tells a story that I always thought was a little far fetched though, til it happened to me! </3

  • @katie4921 ...... you were made in the 90s

  • This is a sad song.... Try not to link it with memorable moments people.

  • I am a freshman.

    And yes, I'm held accountable.

  • I found this song when I was a freshman and my best friend was pregnant..it still takes me back.

  • great tune... was a freshman in 73 and, yes i can relate to this very well.... is an awesome tune, and no matter your age, you can always go back and remember the old days... however old they are to you.....

  • This song was popular when I was a Freshman. Sounds silly, but it's part of the reason it makes me so nostalgic.

  • So, everyone. begin crying with me!

  • First off, the lyrics, its When I was young I knew everything

And she a punk who rarely ever took advice

Now I'm guilt stricken, sobbin' with my head on the floor

""Stop a Baby's Breath"" and a shoe full of rice, no...

Secondly, those of you linking this song to good memories, this song is about the singers girlfriend who had an abortion. the "His girl took a week's worth of valium and slept" means she committed suicide. his girlfriend didnt actually commit suicide, that was added in fordrama

  • can't be held responsible... we were merely Freshmen...

  • How did I get here?

  • Beautiful music. Thanks for uploading! :)

Btw, I write music of my own. It's in my channel. It'd be awesome if you check it out. Thanks :)

  • i was thinking about this guy i met in freshmen year and how were still together and what were going through and the most amazing thing happened, this song came on the radio. <3

  • Comment removed

  • Found this song in 98 while working on my Masters. I would put the CD player on repeat and try and focus on writing all those nightmarish papers.

  • I always thought it was "His girl took a week's worth of valium and slapped him. And now he's guilt-stricken.."

  • So glad I was only alive for half of the 90's...good song though

  • @musicman8459

completely agree with you. The bands in those times were the best.

  • This darn video will not let me play it from favorites. Stupid....

  • I love this song when I was a freshman 2008-2009. It helped with a breakup. Asher Roth's, "I Love College" when he says FRESHMAN FRESHMAN FRESHMAn also was a freshman anthem. The verve is awesome

  • this holds a special place in my heart. I am a freshman in college right now and this resembles my life in so much. Thank you Verpe Pipe for producing my all-time favorite song. God Bless you.

  • ThINKS!!!! About her now and how he never really wept he said :D Thumbs up if you think he's lying I ant shame to cry

  • I grew up in the 90s (well, was 12 in '96, if that counts as "growing up in the 90s'." These days I'm Grandpa evilphil and it seems like most music post 2000 sucks and with the exception of some catchy dumb pop every now and then. Auto-Tune is my SWORN ENEMY.

Oh, and I like this song a lot.

  • 64 people are seniors

  • a while ago, i was in a similar situation, this song speaks to me

  • prolly make a good dubstep song

    Depressing..Check

    ReRub...Check

    drum machine..Check

    copyright infringement...Check

  • I love this song so much.

  • this is such a great song the 90's had the best alternative rock

  • @fbarschow agreed

  • college humor freshmen

  • everyone shut the fuck up about your sappy "i miss this time period" crap. things are always getting shittier and things were always better yesterday. CHANGE THE RECORD.

  • @pinkhairedkitty You realize that in another 15 years, these same people with their sap stories, will hear something from Gaga and say "Ahh those were the good days". People always see the past as being better than the present... Most just don't have the balls to stand up and actually face the bullshit of life... At least this is what I've noticed in my 25 years of life :-/

  • @Charles87sf But in this case past music was better...from in my opinion 60s-early 2000s there are a few good songs/bands here and there, but none of the talent from the past. This is coming from a 24 year old.

  • @darklordixor Oh please, every person says the same damn thing, the music today is just for the next generation, not yours. They will cherish it as you did what you often heard growing up. What I like is that every decade has its own style.

  • @JSSJeepin yeah but im a freshmen in high school. the music in my generation sucks!! no one can sing its all edited and auto tuned.

  • @7yensid Current sophomore in high school. Great stuff can still be found if you dig hard enough around youtube but it won't be played a whole lot on MTV or on the radio. What are some of your favorite bands? Maybe I could suggest some more

  • @TheXriekox i know there ARE some good singers out there. lol im just to lazy to look it up on you tube..... i wish there was a youtube radio or something so i didnt have to keep looking up videos

  • @Charles87sf I understand your thought pattern, but I don't I will wake up in 2020 and say, "Damn, 2011 was a magical year for music!" But I also listen mostly to Zeppelin and The Beatles and The Yardbirds, all stuff made before 1980. But I also like The Black Keys and stuff like that. My taste varies and in the end it's a huge pissing contest.

  • @Charles87sf Maybe it's because music keeps getting worse, so Gaga *will* be good compared to the possibly horrendous music of the future.

  • @Charles87sf Pretty much the truth here. It'll always be this way.

  • @Charles87sf Most people don't have the audacity to stand up and actually face the beauty in the world.

  • @BigCheese00001 Amen man, Amen,

  • aye

  • @Charles87sf what do you know! I was a freshman in high school and just recently turned thirty so if I want to say them were the good days then who are you to say that I cant you nasty person

  • @Charles87sf I would think that most people can face life...but, the music of your youth will always stay with you...one way or the other...This will always be one of my favorite songs...I'm 28 now...and I listen to shit like Squarepusher and Aphex Twin...yet I come back to this song on youtube...It means something to people, like us, who grew up with it, you know? Trends, music and culture will always come back around...even if it's not the same as we remember it...

  • @jonnythesmilingcat and I can't stop hitting the repeat tab...

  • @Charles87sf That's true a lot of the time; people are almost all nostalgic about the decade during which they grew up. However, I would like to say that during the mid and late '90s when I was in elementary and jr high, I was CERTAIN that the alterna-rock of the day was the best music that had ever been produced, other than the Beatles.

  • @Charles87sf Except I think the pass music is better than today as well. You can't argue music has been on a decline. It is more about money than art and the music and has been on a steady inclination towards that goal. Even music artist have made songs about this from the Beegee's hotel California to the whole gunge era and Nu metal like Korn. These days its all about the money. Sure there are a few genuine good songs here and there, but not many.

  • @Charles87sf They will only say that because music is on a downward spiral. Music is becoming more shit every day.

  • @Mavdoss- Not so. Music goes through good periods and bad period, just like any medium. The '60s was the golden era of rock music, followed by a decline in the 70s, absolutely horrible music in the 80s, before thh Seattle grunge bands and alternative groups like Radiohead and the Smashing Pumpkins renewed interest in music that actually meant something. The late 90s saw its share of garbage (boy bands, Britney Spears), but overally the decade was an objectively great period for music.

  • @Mavdoss there you to be a time where you werent allowed to say curse words thue a song on radio, they used to bleep them out. now they don't. and people waunder why we have 10yr olds curseing and talking about guns and drugs. i belive in freedon of speech but when your a parent and your trying to censor the explicit content it's not like you can forbid your child to have a radio.

    there is no parental control.

  • @Mavdoss It must suck to be such a close minded child that you honestly think that. There's always been shit music. You're gonna say Bieber and all those other pop idols. Well think about the 90s and early 2000s flavor of the months. Nync, backstreet boys, britney spears They were good to us, but the previous generation didn't see it, hated them, made fun of 'em, now we're doing the same thing but the internet reinforces it. WE'RE THE SAME AS THE LAST GENERATION. SAME AS NEXT.

  • Thanks for taking the time to type all the lyrics. Very meaningful.

  • Lily's prom :)

  • although you will never see this. im sorry for everything i did. i never stop thinking about you katie. i love you. We were merely freshmen.

  • This makes me miss things I can barely remember...

  • SO MUCH CONFUSION.

"Verve Pipe? Aren't they those guys who did that 'Bittersweet Symphony' song?"

‎"No, they're the guys who did that song about an abortion."

"I... what, really? Because I downloaded 'Bittersweet Symphony' off Kazaa and it was clearly labeled Verve Pipe."

  • @evilphil noo, bittersweet symphony is by the verve

    this is the verve PIPE

  • Good music long gone... R.I.P 90's...

  • I'm 21 but still a freshman at heart.

  • This reminds me of what me and my friend are going through. I fell for her yet she loves another... and shes strait. But there is a lot more to it. I was strait at one point now I'm bi. And my reason is A. Her B. I don't care what sex they are as long as they love me and I love them

  • @RioMo23 Well i think anybody with half a brain realises that we cant go back to the 90s >.>

  • love this song forever and always

  • I still love this song. Yah, its so emo. Listenin' to it makes you wanna drown yourself in sorrow; but very few songs can ever move emotions like what this song does. Gentle yet powerful stuff.

  • @The5thRed Check out Disarm and Jeremy. Also extremely moving teenage distress songs.

  • beautiful

  • The first song that got me hooked to alternative rock. Still my fav. Memories..

  • aer they talkin about freshman in college or high skool?

  • Sad song. I remember my friend Kelly committed suicide 1998 and after I went to his funeral, this song was on the radio and it made me cry because I thought of him. Here's to you Kelly!! I WISH WE HAD MORE YEARS AS FRIENDS!!

  • I love to cut myself in the shower while this song plays, god bless emo :(.... *tears of shame*

  • watch?v=9fGeRbovhMg

  • @BriceOnIce what the hell!!!! Brice, dude, what the hell??! you sound crazy, please explain

    lll

  • watch?v=9fGeRbovhMg

  • I am 24 now and this song reminds me of my high school days. where life was great, not think of the future just the present.Life now is crazy and ridiculous at times, when i hear this song now it brings back to those days and I cherish those memories.Great music never dies!

  • 60 people had a bad freshman year

  • I do listen to Tokio Hotel and yes... I listen to Justin Bieber as well. But don't you think that for a second that I don't know what real music is. This is my origin and why I love music.

  • Stomp on Baby's Breath and a shoe full of rice, no......

no wonder i didnt understand it ..

  • Lithium

    On Sirius XM

  • its been more than 10 years and this song is still the shit :)

  • I miss the 90's so much, it makes me cry inside.

I am not making this up. It is the truth. Everything today is so tasteless and sucks so hard.

  • @TheDeJureTour Your right, every genre is becoming a despicable pile of trash. There is just as much shit out now, as there was back then.

  • @TheDeJureTour every generation has their glory era of music, those who grew up listening to 70s music probably said that music in the 90s was tasteless. The definition of music is always evolving, everyone has their own taste. (Although i do agree with you, the 90s produced more music that was in my taste than the most recent generation of music)

  • @TheDeJureTour Russia misses 90's also...

  • @TheDeJureTour Totally agree....I wish everyday to go back in time knowing then what I know now...man would I change a lot of things....Would definitely have saved my CD collection from back then....instead of "trying to get with the program" and downloading crap...

  • @TheDeJureTour umad? lol trolololololloololololololololololololololololololololool niggalolololololololololtrollololololoolololo

  • @TheDeJureTour on youy side

  • definitely playing this at my funeral

  • Are 'The Verve Pipe' and 'The Verve' one in the same?

  • @BooKittyRadley No. In fact, one is from England, and one is from Seattle. I couldn't tell you which is which though.

  • @clintewoodyt One is from England and the other is from Michigan.

  • @BooKittyRadley No, not at all. The Verve is the British band who did 'Bittersweet Symphony' which is also a pretty brilliant song.

  • @BooKittyRadley

Naw they different man. both one hit wonder bands.

  • @DJoeLawless

    Thanks.

  • Kalamazoo's finest

  • I want this played at my graduation.

  • where did the 90's go the 2000s and soon 2011. crazy shit. i feel like life is in fast forward. I NEED THE PAUSE BUTTON....

  • All this just reminds me how everything now sucks so bad.

  • @wmc1982 i feel the exact same way

  • @thclifted Thanks, at least I don't feel completely alone in my thoughts for a short while. :)

  • @wmc1982 Never alone, for seems like everything is just getting worse n worse

  • This song is amazing...but the verve pipe fell off the earth right afterwards :(

  • If you miss the 90s, try Pandora Internet Radio.

  • @sune2bdoc nah pandora sucks compared to jango.com ...you can pick which artists play how often on which stations

  • @kindnugz420 pandora is just luck of the draw

  • I will never get tired of this song. :)
