  • Yeah cool!

I was still living in England when this hit the charts. I was obsessed with this reggae/funk masterpiece!

Thanks for posting this timeless memory of 1971!

  • RIP Winston Riley, the writer of this wonderful track, who sadly passed away the other day, succumbing to injuries sustained after being inexplicably shot last November.

  • Just makes me wanna dance!

  • GOD I LOVE SKA !!

  • Great !

  • This song is all about me! the magnificent! W00000!

  • thanks for doing a song about ME THE MAGNIFICENT!!!

  • I think the drummer was Sly Dunbar if anyone knows for definite let me know?

  • @MagicalTipster sure is, he was like 15 at the time of the recording, but I don't think that's him in the video, but he did record it.

  • @EarthFMEnterprises OK thanks for that :)

  • Still love this one after all these years.....

    Elaine :)

  • @ther51 I still have the D & A Collins single and a turntable, and the kettle's always on. ;¬)

  • Notice the camera operators never pay any attention to blokes in the audience !! And never miss an opportunity for blatant upskirt shots !

  • @turboslag That's auntie BBC for you.

  • HAHAHA, I never noticed before, but thanks for the tip.

  • I wonder what the Asian babe on the left of TB is doing now, 40 years later?

  • Dig the bass

  • Love the jungle bass guy, and his grooves. I dug this track it 40 years ago too. And check the playout track -- Jig a Jig by East of Eden.

  • jesus, how did i get to this, far distant memories ahh

  • Fuck me, look at the box on the bird in the tshirt at the end! As for the spirit of '69, its got to be a Brutus Trimfit all day long, Baracuta G9, Trickers Tan Brogue boots, 501's.. skin, still alive and kicking today as hard as it was then..

  • @vijaysuperts1 I know I turned it back a few times haha

  • My Niece was doing a gig at at local Pub in 2010 clocked someone at the bar in all the original skin gear as above except he had high laced Martins on with turned up levis . Oooh took me right back

  • one of the first singles i remember buying as a teenage skinhead, lol.

  • @56indy I bought it today lol

  • skinheads

  • As searing a track now as it was then. Brilliant!! Did u hear the applause at the end of the track? Genuine not canned :)

  • Sorry to show my ignorance here, but anyone out there know who is the bass player on this track.......it's not Robbie Shakespeare is it? Coolest ever bass line tho'.........

  • hits my spot Ahhhhhhhhh

  • hot rex ??? tut tut Tony

  • Feel so fortunate to have grown up to this fantastic tune!

  • Fab

  • gotta love early 70s TOTP - especially with all the honeys in the audience :)

  • Yes indeed,Tony did say "Hot Rex" perhaps he was combining T Rex and Hot Love ,to save time.

  • i can easily smoke a big fat one to this tune

  • I reckon I could've quite easily wrote the lyrics to this

  • Jig a Jig by East of Eden

  • What is the track at the end?

  • Comment removed

  • the drummer is wearing moccasins and socks, and did tony blackbum say Hot Rex at the beginning?

  • Dancing in their underwear. Not much has changed since then :)

  • This track makes me feel sooooo gooooood!!!! ) Unlike the repulsive correspondence below...........

  • @EddyPop100

    but it's sooooooo true.......

  • Wow : ) : )

  • @WHITEFREAKSOUT Easy tiger!! just who are you having a go at here?? Explain ,please, without the expletives,so a sensible, mature debate can be held.

  • @deanprabhuji oh get back to fucking your sister in her anus. I'm already dealing with one white ape.

  • This is the coolest track ever!!!

  • Twin spin! Fab song!

  • awesome...

    i luv it a much....

  • The most wicked bassline I've ever heard!

  • Great song, thanks for posting.

  • The 60's hadn't really finished then, they were still swinging!

  • Love the bit at the end with the audience dancing to East of Eden. Wonder if any of these groovy grannies have seen themselves 40 years later?

  • 2 people are sad and totally lacking in taste! big-up the double barrel! top tune!plus im LOVING the jig atftewards!

  • god were has 40yrs gone iwas a16yr old when this came out use to hear this song in every pub and club i used to visit in those glory days so much fun being a teenager back then would not like being yong of todays generation what a shit time it is now

  • At the beginning, Tony Blackburn got Hot Love by T Rex mixed up and said Hot Rex LOL

  • I wish I had a time machine to transport me back to 1971, but not as a 4 year old, as a 15 year old!

  • w-o-o-o

  • blackburn's not got a picture in his attic, hahahahahah.

  • Can you believe it that it's exactly 40 years ago today, May 1st 1971, that this great track reached No 1 on the UK hit parade. It's still my all time favourite. Great to see the complete performance of it on Top Of The Pops; thanks so much for posting.

  • LOOK AT ALL OF THE FIT BIRDS AT THE END OF THIS VIDEO....Women were MUCH better looking back then than they are now. All we have now are fat ugly dog's with trainers and shell suits, That THINK they are "All that".

  • 22nd April 2011 Day 2

    Clapham Grand

  • fuck yeah

  • Thumbs Up for the Ending!

  • stapress whites with turnup, ben sherman with button down collar, leather soled brogues, crombie with a stud and hankie, black harrington, monkey boots for the girls.........not everyone in the 70's looked like an explosion in a paint factory

  • @canaerequiem That'd be a fake crombie, canarequiem. And a fake Tonik suit. Unless you were old enough to be working, in which case, you might save enough for the proper articles/

  • lol love that bit at the end!

  • @playgirlc

AMEN! It's a frenzy of HIP!!!

  • Meu parabens a vc que postou o double barril é o melhor samba rock do mundo e na seleção da chic show, muito demais ouvir isso e viajar lebrando dos bons tempos. valeu irmão.

  • GIT DOWN!!!!

  • AMAZING!!

  • great catchy beat

  • That bassline is fucking wicked!!!

  • oh yes, you are the magnificent:)

  • The only thing live is the vocals. Looks like the musicians are syncing over a tape.

  • Git down!!

  • They didn't have periods in those days...

  • @EddyPop100 Of course girls had periods in those days, or else how would the human race re-produce itself?

  • @EddyPop100 Perhaps the girls who were "on" were using tampons. They were available in 1971.

  • @Feisty1967 You appear to be a rather pre-occupied individual. If you're female I suggest you get out more, if you're male I suggest you stay in - a lot.

  • @EddyPop100 ???

  • Memories come flooding back whenever I hear this song.

  • What if those girls had a period? Would they be showing their knickers if they had one of those looped sanitary towels that you used to get in the old days? Or did they have tampons in those days?

  • God, girls were showing their knickers, that's shocking!!

  • One of my favourite reggae tracks, killer bass. This clip was 6 years before I was born. My god some of the fashions are unforgiveable but hey it does have it's good points: @ 3:49 the girl on the left, "Hey lady I can see your knickers!"

  • This was a great new sound at the time and I think it is still retains some unique aspects not least the fantastic vocal and that piano step

  • This is a very sexy song to dance to.

  • "Hot Rex" had been no.1 according to Tony.

  • It's good to know that Tony Blackburn really was that shallow and asenine, and it's not just me remembering it wrong. And how lovey to see the 70s as they really were, full of gawky teens (some of whom had been dressed by their mums) dancing inappropriately. Thanks for posting

  • Absolutely brilliant!! Thanks for posting.

  • It it just me or does he sing 'prick, prick, prick' on quite a few occasions. This reminds me of going to fairs when I was a teenager. It was played on all the rides.

  • @CFR206 It's just you. He's saying 'break, break, break'. Sorry.

  • That track is cooler than cool!

  • EZ, this is such a classic tune.

  • heh funny to see skinhead reggae performed on top of the pops:)

  • @konmahometa YES, I was an original skinhead, I remember bopping to this, and other great reggae sounds, I do not remember this being on TOTP.

  • @rondeco30 Cheers mate!

  • Better, better times.

  • parece reggae

  • @CRIMINOLOGOTAPACHULA ¿Como?!! Es reggae hombre, original, primera ola derivada directamente de Ska y Bluebeat. ¿No me digas que para ti reggae es solo Bob Marley? (que descansa en paz).

  • And now we've got X-factor!!? Jeez.

  • Pukka.......

  • Wait until you get older - you will cringe at your crassness.

  • I just "Tell it as it IS" I dont have to remember what I have said.... Because it is the TRUTH!

OK What part of my statement is a lie!!!!

  • @papermariob Well judging by the number of thumbs down you've had since you made this comment, you'll already know exactly how it feels to be passed over. Get used to it; you'll be old yourself one day unless you lighten our burden by killing yourself first.

  • I am not one for popularity... And telling the TRUTH will always make you unpopular...

OK I will lie just for you... mmmm I bet the women in this video at 03:17 are still all well fit and still have nice tight asses. There are you happy now fuck face!

  • Attention seeker.

  • @floppybollox3 Attention seeker OR Truth merchant ..... I will let you decided!

  • wouldn't it be nice to have a time machine

  • @kopynd - true, but imagine the people in the street feeling your clothes and saying "where did you buy that man??" LOL

  • @kopynd Indeed it would be nice to have one or a Life on Mars sort of experience, :)

  • @kopynd

    Too right, mate!

  • @kopynd .....it sure would!

  • @kopynd I have a time machine if you wanna buy it lol it's called you tube

  • @kopynd I HAVE MY MIND HEHE

  • @kopynd Man 1971 I wasn't even born and " to much I like it " when I listen to it

you see back in the day they couldn't quite work with dancing...lol but musicaly damn!

  • Who are Hot Rex ?

  • LMAO Blackburn was such a nob, he meant T-Rex with "Hot Love". HOT REX lmfao....

  • Nice one, classic track. Absolute classic.

  • @SteveResin Dam right! Loved TOTP,& to see a reggae band or artist on the show was just fantastic.

  • The song at the end credits is the artist East of Eden's 'Jig-a-Jig'
