One of my favorite little things about the duel is when Luke manages to get a lick on Vader. That brief pause in the fight, Vader's grunt followed by that strange, dry growl. Something about that really adds to the scene.
@kniffa It's a fight between a boy with very little lightsaber experience vs a 50 year old half machine-man. They're gonna fight a little different than two combat tested jedi from the height of the order.
After his transformation, Vader adapted his technique to utilize his size and strength rather than his agility. We can see that here and in his fight against Obi-Wan.
Also, in this fight, Vader obviously did not want to kill Luke. If he had wanted to, he probably could have, as he has killed countless other Jedi in one-on-one duels.
@tdkt160 Not that exciting. To all the cast and crew except the Director and Mark Hamil, the reveal of "No I am your father" was unknown. See, the man who plays Darth Vader in the suit and onscreen is not the same man who does his voice. The man in the suit read "No, Obiwan killed your father," but his voice is never heard. So despite rumors they might have heard on set, I'd say most of the cast/crew were shocked at the first showing of the movie.
@michaelandjennyshow Yes, I'm well aware of all that behind-the-scenes info. I'm 42 years old. The original trilogy had a profound effect on my childhood. The "moment" I was referring to in my original comment was the moment at the beginning of the video clip when Luke first confronts Vader in the carbon freeze chamber. It would've been cool (to me, at least) to see that moment happen LIVE on the set, knowing people worldwide were going to freak when they eventually see this.
@NooblesseFr I'd love to know how many people are here as a result of the Yahoo story. I never knew anyone but David Prowse did the fighting in this scene. With the benefit of hindsight, it makes a lot of sense. Prowse was a bodybuilder, Bob Anderson was a professional swordsman.
They seem to have based the prequel duels off Luke's moves here, which totally misses the point this scene conveys. Luke is meant to look foolish, not cool. His moves are fancy but they're totally ineffective in real combat. He way over-swings and spins for no reason, and Vader just knocks the blade out of his hand with a flick of the wrist. Vader keeps his moves simple and precise. Luke looks like a kid who has no idea what he's doing. Vader actually does know what he's doing. He is a master.
@FnuAw I disagree. Not only did he best Vader early on, but by the end, Vader is wielding the lightsaber like a club, swinging wildly. Which is how he bests luke. Which incidentally, is how luke beats vader in rotj; swinging it wildly, and angrily. The point here was to illustrate how anger fuels the dark side, and while lukes desperation came from a desire to save his friends, he couldnt unleash the anger needed to beat vader here. He doesnt do that until rotj, when leia is threatened by Vader.
@hassenmaschine He bests Luke because Luke was cornered, exhausted, and had just been pummeled by metal. When Vader gets angry he does start swinging wildly, and that doesn't make him a better fighter. The promise of he dark side is a lie. The dark side makes you less focused, not more. Notice that Luke was able to get that hit on Vader's shoulder because Vader over-swung and left an opening that Luke exploited. Vader wouldn't have made that mistake if he stayed calm and kept his moves simple.
@FnuAw I didnt say that it made you a better fighter. You are missing the point of this scene. Its to show that anger fuels the dark side, but its in all of us. You called Lukes moves 'flashy' and 'pointless' Watch again. When luke does a 'pointless' air tumble, its right before he kicks vader off the platform. Clearly, he did it to get into postition. This was right after Vader mocked him and said he needed to unleash his anger.
@FnuAw You'll notice that Vader has a more defensive style of combat. Mostly speculation, but this is likely due to his cybernetic implants and full body reconstruction. Obi-Wan also had a similar style which might have also been due to to his age and/or out of practice. At 1:15 you'll see Vader over-swing at Luke, which could have been a mistake if Luke had more experience. Much of the styles seem Kendo based, but I doubt that is the only viable/used style in the lore.
@LiquidWolf98 Vader's being defensive because he doesn't want to kill Luke. He wants to bring him to the Emperor alive. When he fights Obi-Wan he is much more aggressive, which puts Obi-Wan on the defensive. Vader over-swings at 1:15 because Luke ducks out of the way instead of parrying like Vader expected. That's a mistake a trained swordsman could believably make, especially one who know's he's fighting a rookie.
@FnuAw Luke here is similar to Obi-Wan in the prequels. Both were 'foolish' in their moves as you say. Lots of wasted energy, dramatics, etc. (though for us movie goers it was glorious to watch). Luke has an excuse - he is started late in life, has just one teacher, etc., but not ObiWan. This is why old ObiWan repeatedly says how bad he feels for what happened. He knows that *he* is to blame for much of what happened. If he wasn't so cocky, much would not have transpired.
@bsbungie It looks glorious until they do ridiculous moves like turning around and swinging their lightsabers behind their heads to defend their backs. Watch the Episode 1 lightsaber training featurette to see what I mean. Fortunately most of the moves aren't quite that bad, but it is still jarring to see.
@FnuAw OK, for us movie goers *except FnuAw*. :-) My point went a little beyond that though, I'm talking about the storyline and why they may have acted the way they did.
this scene reminds me of the relationship with my father, my fight for my own independence, resisting conformity because it is easy but yet very influential, im having to constantly fight back with out losing control of my emotions
Obi won and Yoda forgot to teach Luke a very basic rule about light saber duels.
If your opponent is always two steps ahead of you, and embarrassing your ass by only using one arm by choice, it 's strongly advised you........GET THE HELL OUT OF THERE!
To all the people who prefer the duels from the prequels, remember the fact that Bob Anderson, fencer, whas the stunt double for Vader in TESB and ROTJ, so, a REAL swordman played the character in these duels.
@Nazgul1974 oh we already know that. however the blades are supposed to be made of pure energy which is supposed to be weightless. and in the prequels they actually did look weightless. however I will have to admit, this fight is better than all the others put together. I'll take this fight over the prequels and the prequel's fights over the rest of the original's fights
Best duel by far of all the films, because theres a story behind it and meaning behind each of the characters actions. Not just flashy somersaults and style over substance like the prequels.
@thatsnotchocolat I agree. I'll help explain. The original star wars trilogy had a great story, there's tons of moments that resonate with our memories because we care about the things that are going on so we remember them. That's why these movies have such an impact. The prequels are all about special effects and fail to connect with us on an emotional level. A lightsaber fight is more about the events around it then the fight itself. The prequels don't understand this.
@thantrus Tell me about it. Especially Dookoo or dukoo or... whatever vs yoda... I didn't know how to react to that scene at all so much of it was just so wrong
@thantrus I always thought they were more like a dance in the prequels. A clumsy ballet where they keep accidentally hitting each others' lightsabers.
you guys are all wrong the reason why vader was angry was because anakins master (qui gon) was killed by the emperor which is why he joined the darkside soo he can kill him and have his revenge
i thought that this battle was overall better than the one in return of the jedi. ROTJ just dropped the aggressiveness of vader and the swift movement of luke
@HardforJesus what! george is awesome and all the movies were great. with saying yor stupid and know almost nothing for how lightsaber battles and such were in the pequels at least
Now this is how you have a light saber duel! No annoying jumping around, just some nice editing, sword play, and most importantly: emotional substance behind the fight.
Listen to James Earl Jones words, then listen to the words of Hayden Christensen. They could've done a MUCH better job making young Anakin a more sophisticated speaker.
Part of me thinks that, despite the fact that Episode 3 (Where we see Anakin's REAL saber skills) was made after this, that Darth Vader was just holding back here. Though, maybe he, of course, didn't want to unleash his full skill on Luke, since he couldn't bring himself to kill him.
How can people say this is boring??? So theres not much bouncing around but thats not what makes a great duel. This is the only one which is so atmospheric: The creepy sound effects, the lighting (silhoueted in the dark with shining lightsabres), the tension (vader leaping down at him, throwing damn heavy things at him, and jumping out at him when we least expect it. Anyone who says this is worse than the new ones is just a naive, single minded kid. Sorry, just had to get that off my chest.
@VisionaryofMirage Your right man, Especially that the first 3/4's of the Duel, Vader is pretty much just Toying with him just to see how much of the Force Luke has Learned. Vader thought luke was a Bitch in the freezing chamber, hence the "All too easy" Quote. It wasnt until Luke Fried his shoulder pad with his saber that we get to see Vader Go Apeshit for a Second. Cutting off lukes hand was Vaders way of Ending the Combat without Killing Luke cause Luke Had Impressed Him.
@VisionaryofMirage Well that's your opinion bud, I liked all the Star Wars duels in the prequels better, even though i admit the original duels are classic
@VisionaryofMirage You gotta admit, the Rerurn of the Jedi duel is pretty good too. But this one is very suspenseful and just powerful. I favor the originals over the prequels.
@stopdropandroll Well thats just my opinion, man. There are some duels I like in the new trilogy like the final anakin vs dooku showdown, and others which I believe compromise the seriousness of the originals.
@VisionaryofMirage Are you retarded? The only reason why they couldn't bounce around was because they didn't have the right tech at the time. Nostalgia probably runs your life.
@VisionaryofMirage It doesn't run my life, i like all 6 movies equally. It really makes me mad when people piss on the prequels. I mean its star wars, why so much hate?
@Mrbluefire95 I feel the same way about the originals, I don't hate the new ones. My comment was meant to defend the originals, not to spit on the prequels, because it really annoys me when peope complain about them. We are probably pissing off the other viewers by now so shall we agree to disagree?
@jollycynic I think it really just highlights the fact that Luke left Degobah before his training was complete. If you compare what his fighting style will be in Return of the Jedi, when his training is complete, you see a distinct difference.
@jollycynic that was the thing luke took off in the middle of training, the original three films to a jedi learning about the force was more important. this is why before luke enters the tree yoda says "your weapons.., you will not need them." implying whatever test he had for him could be completed by using the force ; )
I personally am a fan of New Hopes Vader vs Obi Wan duel but this is a close second in my book...the first time luke ever really sees vader let alone fights him.
Vader knew Luke was his son...he wasn't gonna hurt him....infact..in this fight...you can see that Vader's teasing him...and testing his swords ability...and at the same time...training him..... Its only in Jedi...that Vader knew his son's ability that he began to really fight Luke...even then....Vader has no intend to kill Luke....
...and change your damn accout picture. What is that, an AK-47? What are you, six? Grow up. Guns aren't cool, you're not cool either, in fact I'll be you're known throughout the Galaxy as the "faggotry DE-luxe" :)
Now piss off. You DON'T troll Star Wars nerds. Go mess with the BSG dorks, ass. XD
@MehrunesDaagon And since when is saying overused Internet lingo a sign of pwnage. You are just showing that you are a pathetic George Lucas fan boy that thinks everything he made was a masterpiece and cant use logic to back it up. You probably think howard the duck was a good movie because you are such a fan boy.
@dontcommentmehoe I never said it was any "masterpiece", rather only strongly implied that I enjoy Star Wars. (It's quite obvious from the way I talk, obviously.)
At any rate, you are done, and need to go play somewhere else. Thx.
@clarancesh Guns are interesting, maybe... the mechanism is interesting. Gas powered vs. bolt action and all that stuff, that's interesting, but cool? No. It's a rudimentary weapon which fires a small lead projectile at great speed. That's not all that cool.
Mass Drivers are cool. Phaser beams are cool. Lightsabers are cool. Guns? Well they're just sort of "meh."
the greatest climax in cinematic history, and my favorite film of all time...oh and the 1980 version is the only one worth watching than the billion other re-releases. totally destroyed the beautiful work of art that Leigh Brackett and Irvin Kershner gave us
...but with that said, I think all the Gungans should have been killed in the film, and I would very much liked to have seen Jar-Jar get drawn & quartered, because he was the worst character ever made... ever. Like a retarted Barney the Dinosaur, and I just threw-up in my mouth a little from thinking about it overlong. :(
Just don't be in such a hurry to "poo-poo" the prequel. We all know the problems it had, and yet we all went to see all of them in the theatres, and I'm betting most of us more than once. We love it, it's Star Wars. The good, the bad, the ugly, still: It's Star Wars.
And most people are only echoing the comments others have made over the many years since the films came out, and by now everyone already knows all the problems the prequel had, so lets just leave it at that and cheer for Star Wars.
You can only watch the original three films so many times before they become "old hat" -- sure, it's always great to watch them, but there does come a point when it stops being so exciting and glorious, and starts to feel a bit routine. So then you pop in Phantom, or ROTS, for a little modern space combat, Samuel L. Jackson screamin'/purple lightsaber swingin', and Padme "Freaky Wardrobe" Amidala (Natalie Portman is gorgeous btw) being all hot and excellent. Then you go back to the originals.
If you've watched the original trilogy a billion and a half times (such as I have), it's sometimes nice to watch "The Phantom Menace". We all enjoy Darth Maul (don't lie: you love him), and apart from terrible bits like the podracing, it wasn't such a bad movie. I like the invasion of Naboo, and if you're an Emperor fan, the prequel has lots of nice little treats in it for you. "Revenge of the Sith" stands apart as the better of the three, and you know you liked it. It was fun.
You guys can badmouth the prequel trilogy all you like, it's been done before and we all, of course, know the many issues those films had... but still: It is Star Wars.
Either you love Star Wars, or you do not. I think Yoda said something about that in one of the films... :)
Don't be too hasty to tear the new films apart, I'd wager there are moments you enjoy, just as there are moments I enjoy, in those movies. And I couldn't do any better, myself. And it's something different.
@MehrunesDaagon it's not that we don't like the story of the prequels, we're just upset at the lack of emotional impact. that's why we had fun watching the emperor kick ass because everybody else was retarded lol
One of my favorite little things about the duel is when Luke manages to get a lick on Vader. That brief pause in the fight, Vader's grunt followed by that strange, dry growl. Something about that really adds to the scene.

i thought that this battle was overall better than the one in return of the jedi. ROTJ just dropped the aggressiveness of vader and the swift movement of luke

Now this is how you have a light saber duel! No annoying jumping around, just some nice editing, sword play, and most importantly: emotional substance behind the fight.
Irrelevant402 5 months ago
i like the old duels from episodes V and VI more than the newer ones . they are just harder an more powerful and much more atmospheric.

Luke shows his sword quickly and eagerly, while Vader shows his slowly and smoothly. SMH, that's just nasty.
ThaLinguist 6 months ago
Listen to James Earl Jones words, then listen to the words of Hayden Christensen. They could've done a MUCH better job making young Anakin a more sophisticated speaker.

Excuse me...but why the fuck is this guy targeting his own family?
RawheadRex72 7 months ago
Mark Hamill kicks Hayden whatshisfaces ass. Most Epic duel ever.
newworldomar 7 months ago
The original concept art planned to have Luke still wearing his orange X-Wing flight suit during this battle, which I think would've been better.
As for Vader holding back, when compared to episode III, I don't think so. He's missing both legs, an arm, and has to breathe with a respirator.
GarthanSaal444 7 months ago
of all the lightsaber duels this one is always my favorate.
cripplehawk 7 months ago
Part of me thinks that, despite the fact that Episode 3 (Where we see Anakin's REAL saber skills) was made after this, that Darth Vader was just holding back here. Though, maybe he, of course, didn't want to unleash his full skill on Luke, since he couldn't bring himself to kill him.
WeAreBorg359 7 months ago
How can people say this is boring??? So theres not much bouncing around but thats not what makes a great duel. This is the only one which is so atmospheric: The creepy sound effects, the lighting (silhoueted in the dark with shining lightsabres), the tension (vader leaping down at him, throwing damn heavy things at him, and jumping out at him when we least expect it. Anyone who says this is worse than the new ones is just a naive, single minded kid. Sorry, just had to get that off my chest.

TMNTG 6 months ago 3
@VisionaryofMirage Your right man, Especially that the first 3/4's of the Duel, Vader is pretty much just Toying with him just to see how much of the Force Luke has Learned. Vader thought luke was a Bitch in the freezing chamber, hence the "All too easy" Quote. It wasnt until Luke Fried his shoulder pad with his saber that we get to see Vader Go Apeshit for a Second. Cutting off lukes hand was Vaders way of Ending the Combat without Killing Luke cause Luke Had Impressed Him.
LordBicen 6 months ago
@VisionaryofMirage Well that's your opinion bud, I liked all the Star Wars duels in the prequels better, even though i admit the original duels are classic
MaadDawg1 5 months ago
@VisionaryofMirage You gotta admit, the Rerurn of the Jedi duel is pretty good too. But this one is very suspenseful and just powerful. I favor the originals over the prequels.

@VisionaryofMirage dude stop complaining about the duels in the new trilogy. i bet u pissed ur pants when u saw them
stopdropandroll 3 months ago
@stopdropandroll Well thats just my opinion, man. There are some duels I like in the new trilogy like the final anakin vs dooku showdown, and others which I believe compromise the seriousness of the originals.
VisionaryofMirage 3 months ago
@VisionaryofMirage Are you retarded? The only reason why they couldn't bounce around was because they didn't have the right tech at the time. Nostalgia probably runs your life.
Mrbluefire95 3 months ago
@Mrbluefire95 I guess intollerence runs yours.
VisionaryofMirage 3 months ago
@VisionaryofMirage It doesn't run my life, i like all 6 movies equally. It really makes me mad when people piss on the prequels. I mean its star wars, why so much hate?
Mrbluefire95 3 months ago
@Mrbluefire95 I feel the same way about the originals, I don't hate the new ones. My comment was meant to defend the originals, not to spit on the prequels, because it really annoys me when peope complain about them. We are probably pissing off the other viewers by now so shall we agree to disagree?

I get the feeling that Yoda should have given Luke at least a little bit of combat training
jollycynic 8 months ago 26
@jollycynic training with to use the force helps lightsaber combat
stopdropandroll 7 months ago
@jollycynic I think it really just highlights the fact that Luke left Degobah before his training was complete. If you compare what his fighting style will be in Return of the Jedi, when his training is complete, you see a distinct difference.
gpritch84 7 months ago
@jollycynic uhhhh, did you watch the movie? Luke left Dagobah early.
jasonesapp 6 months ago 2
@jasonesapp forget him hes an idiot
stopdropandroll 6 months ago
@jollycynic im sure they would have gotten to that point if Luke would have stayed and not left early !!!
nexivdr 6 months ago
@jollycynic that was the thing luke took off in the middle of training, the original three films to a jedi learning about the force was more important. this is why before luke enters the tree yoda says "your weapons.., you will not need them." implying whatever test he had for him could be completed by using the force ; )

XD
MehrunesDaagon 10 months ago
@MehrunesDaagon So you have nothing logical to say that you have to attack my picture? Wow you are pathetic as hell.
dontcommentmehoe 10 months ago
@MehrunesDaagon And since when is saying overused Internet lingo a sign of pwnage. You are just showing that you are a pathetic George Lucas fan boy that thinks everything he made was a masterpiece and cant use logic to back it up. You probably think howard the duck was a good movie because you are such a fan boy.
dontcommentmehoe 10 months ago
@dontcommentmehoe I never said it was any "masterpiece", rather only strongly implied that I enjoy Star Wars. (It's quite obvious from the way I talk, obviously.)
At any rate, you are done, and need to go play somewhere else. Thx.
MehrunesDaagon 10 months ago
@MehrunesDaagon well I agree with some other stuff you said, I have to say guns are cool, just not how some people use them.
clarancesh 10 months ago
@clarancesh Guns are interesting, maybe... the mechanism is interesting. Gas powered vs. bolt action and all that stuff, that's interesting, but cool? No. It's a rudimentary weapon which fires a small lead projectile at great speed. That's not all that cool.
Mass Drivers are cool. Phaser beams are cool. Lightsabers are cool. Guns? Well they're just sort of "meh."
MehrunesDaagon 10 months ago
@clarancesh But I was only diffusing the troll who came in here and started acting all trollish, don't take my statments as more than what they are.
MehrunesDaagon 10 months ago
the greatest climax in cinematic history, and my favorite film of all time...oh and the 1980 version is the only one worth watching than the billion other re-releases. totally destroyed the beautiful work of art that Leigh Brackett and Irvin Kershner gave us
jmiester25 11 months ago
...but with that said, I think all the Gungans should have been killed in the film, and I would very much liked to have seen Jar-Jar get drawn & quartered, because he was the worst character ever made... ever. Like a retarted Barney the Dinosaur, and I just threw-up in my mouth a little from thinking about it overlong. :(
MehrunesDaagon 11 months ago
It is a very easy thing to critique a piece of art, quite another to create one yourself. :)
MehrunesDaagon 11 months ago
Just don't be in such a hurry to "poo-poo" the prequel. We all know the problems it had, and yet we all went to see all of them in the theatres, and I'm betting most of us more than once. We love it, it's Star Wars. The good, the bad, the ugly, still: It's Star Wars.
And most people are only echoing the comments others have made over the many years since the films came out, and by now everyone already knows all the problems the prequel had, so lets just leave it at that and cheer for Star Wars.
MehrunesDaagon 11 months ago
You can only watch the original three films so many times before they become "old hat" -- sure, it's always great to watch them, but there does come a point when it stops being so exciting and glorious, and starts to feel a bit routine. So then you pop in Phantom, or ROTS, for a little modern space combat, Samuel L. Jackson screamin'/purple lightsaber swingin', and Padme "Freaky Wardrobe" Amidala (Natalie Portman is gorgeous btw) being all hot and excellent. Then you go back to the originals.
MehrunesDaagon 11 months ago
If you've watched the original trilogy a billion and a half times (such as I have), it's sometimes nice to watch "The Phantom Menace". We all enjoy Darth Maul (don't lie: you love him), and apart from terrible bits like the podracing, it wasn't such a bad movie. I like the invasion of Naboo, and if you're an Emperor fan, the prequel has lots of nice little treats in it for you. "Revenge of the Sith" stands apart as the better of the three, and you know you liked it. It was fun.
MehrunesDaagon 11 months ago
You guys can badmouth the prequel trilogy all you like, it's been done before and we all, of course, know the many issues those films had... but still: It is Star Wars.
Either you love Star Wars, or you do not. I think Yoda said something about that in one of the films... :)
Don't be too hasty to tear the new films apart, I'd wager there are moments you enjoy, just as there are moments I enjoy, in those movies. And I couldn't do any better, myself. And it's something different.
MehrunesDaagon 11 months ago
@MehrunesDaagon it's not that we don't like the story of the prequels, we're just upset at the lack of emotional impact. that's why we had fun watching the emperor kick ass because everybody else was retarded lol
