  • what's the name of this song and the artist because I can't find it on itunes

  • Mclaughlin Ripping it! Zakir Follows! What madnesssss!

  • They are my Gods!!!

  • love h interlude @1.54.john mclaughlin,al di meola and paco de lucia are the few guitarists who play technically perfect and exceptional notes. lets not forget carlos santana

  • love h interlude @1.54.

  • tranquil!!

  • John Mclaughlin is one of few guitar players who, after playing for almost 40 years(at the time of this video) still looks happy to play guitar. So inspiring :D

  • at the end of the white sahib´s solo there is echo of mind ecology

  • 2 Shit heads also watched dis wonderfull song.

  • @nitinvirat7... Yes, one is goirick and the other is guruji1

  • very nice indeed but i feel padmasree hariharan wud hv done a ay better job at the vocals though

  • to play this good you gotta be on LSD or you gotta be really crazy!

  • The Band is as usual superb,...but it is so heartening to hear the OUT OF KEY Shankar Mahadevan.....not expected from this most pro band.......

  • @guruji1 U are a real piece of shit!! You are calling this classically trained singer out of key??? WTF? What trash bin did u crawl out of? Go back to your shithole

  • @kalpeshbhumia - may be he is a very good classically trained singer.. bt among the other legends in the band.. he is nothing...there are other legendary singers in from india.. better than shankar mahadevan......

  • @rhitamd First, I never said that Shankar was the only best singer in India. I am very well aware that there are a lot of other good singers in India. Secondly, Whether Shankar is lesser/greater than other band members in Shakti is a non-issue to me because each member has his own unique instrument/style to bring to the table, and Shankar effectively brings out the vocals. Thirdly, shankar has a wide repertoire in vocals (ghazals, bhaav geet, classical, fusion, rap, etc). So no one like him!

  • Legands

  • शानदार!

  • they arent using any song..all self composed and terrible inprovised

  • i was thr !!live!!...and I met them backstage!!....one of the better days of my life.

  • Remember Shakti is astounding.

  • Thanks John for exposing me a different world I never saw and giving me the ability to see the light in your eyes

  • for me is more than music!i looooooove!

  • Mandolin Shrinivas is simply wonderful!!!

  • they are using a part of squarepusher's song as sampling pattern! so cool !!!!

  • Serious..which song are they using?

  • watch?v=3UzdnCTPi-E

    Rustic Raver - Squarepusher

    I hope you'll like this !!

  • Dude they have been around since the 1969 ~ LOL

  • no they are not ~ LOL

  • What concert is this? I'd love to get a CD

  • This is from the Remember Shakti DVD. Buy it, you won't regret it!! :)

  • ..very devotional ..I <3

  • Whew! and you thought the mandolin was just an Italian instrument....Mahadev Shankar's voice sends me to heaven...

  • where can I get this song?

  • Speechless.... Just beyond words...... it almost hurts......so beautiful

  • another dimension, come and take me from this ugly world

  • John´s face at 2:30,thats what i want to see. That face is more than even music can ever be.

    Shalom to all here :)

  • ..you are certainly an enlightened being

  • ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL MUSIC !!!!!!

i love music that you can meditate to

you can just close ur eyes and feel the music

    its like magic lol

  • All commenting should kepp in mind john can play in any genra, and particularily is of the most open minded of musicians, he is open to any sound, he rarely does not acsept what you would consider cheap or cheesy because he is in love with the beauty, the esence of the world.

  • i agree about the silly DJ scrathing tone. the only chink in his armour. his average tone over the years. i think he uses MIDI to generate a chord for each note he plays, and with the notes whizzing by it ends up souding muddled.

  • 3:57-4:40

    JAW DROPPING STUFF!

  • one thing was lacking...simplicity..

but that might be because i might not be of a level high enough to comprehend what was going on...

[although i've learnt classical...this stuff takes a LOT more than training]

  • abs incredible...touches the heart and soul...god bless these great souls

  • The guitar is a most beautiful sounding instrument. When the tone is bad, there is nothing that you can play that sounds good.

No guitar player is bigger than the guitar itself, including jm. Some people get confused and think it is them we love and not the guitar.

  • Then why not just go pluck the strings with a nail and get off on it by yourself. The rest of us here will listen to JM.

  • Regarding guitar tone - sometime in the 90's he started using some effect with his johnny smith that sounded sour. What I could figure is that he was trying to sound like Miles' trumpet. Sometimes highly acclaimed artists'egos grow and lead to them losing taste. Taste is everything for an artist. He seems to have lost alot of it in recent years.

Such a horrid guitar tone (W/ the defrancesco group)is a perfect example.

  • I saw this group live in London. I remember this particular song aswell.

  • ye aadmi mera bhagwan hai. john is my god.

    i love him.

  • great performance. Singer Shankar Mahadevan and mandolinist U. Shrinivas are fantastic. Only I would prefer John playing acoustic giutar.

  • i did not like JM's synth sound. does not suit his stature.

  • i seem to not enjoy the guitar sound myself...but i guess musicians seem to evolve in their choice of sound...

  • I play guitar/mandolin myself. Having Synth into mix allows one to alter what is called ADSR envelope of guitar and helps play the instrument faster. (One can read about it on the net - there is enough info out there.) That's why I do not like JM using it as he should not have to rely on synths to play fast. Shrinivas on the other hand is quite consistant and plays in sonic speed without any synth gimmicks.

  • Ive seen JM play without a synth sound and believe you me HE IS FAST!!!!!

  • you're really dumb, have you not seen the millions of videos of mclaughlin on acoustic?

  • john is lightning fast with or without synth my friend. dont you remember shakti?

  • This is great, can anyone recommend similar bands or songs? As slow, mellow and relaxing like this one. Oh and what is the name of the tabla player?

  • 'Tri Atma' used to sound like Shakti also listen to John Handy with Ali Akbar Khan if you can get hold of their album - it's out of this world.Tabla player is Zakir Hussein son of Alla Rakha who used to play with Ravi Shanker

  • thanks man!

  • wonderful!!

anyone know if there is an audio version of

    this item? CD or other?

    peace!

  • There is a DVD out that has this song, but from a different concert. The DVD also contains a nice interview with John.

  • absolutely the greatest guitarist of all time!!!!!toe to toe no one can match john....enjoy him and his music as much as you can.....thanks so much from the bottom of my heart....this is what real musicians should sound like.....not the shit we have had to swallow for the past 20 years.....live on musical god of gods.....i will always look to you for the question and the answer....Frank

  • This is so beautiful! Very good Intro...I know that JM is a guitarist from the god, but sometimes he uses his fusion in wrong places, i mean that this tune shoudnt be so rock after slow intro, but its my opinion! Thanks!

  • Baz and still, i return...this is just so good...followed john`s music since `68 and still he astounds me

  • Full of surprises.I like the second fusion bit when JM comes in completely from a different angle to where the Mandolin player leaves the scene creating a cyclone sound with a heart beat in the background.JMs expressions reveal where he is coming from. You just got to be special to think & create sounds like this. The sound of the cymbals crashing is annoying though...!

  • this music can not be written and can not be copied.

  • shrinivas rules

  • Bazonics. Its beautiful! I feel goose bumps every single time i listen to Shrinivas on the mandolin or the bit with Zakir Hussain and Selvaganesh right at the end!

  • just amazing

  • marvelous

  • great music !!!! yeah !

    :-)

..you wonna see/hear something innovative - how to improvise classical music ?!

look for video : "bach sarabande jazz guitar"

  • U.Srinivas is great here!!

these people are more then people!!

  • this sound in the best of world

  • I really dont dig the vocals at all, It wudve been perfect without the vocs...

  • Absolutely Sublime..thanks baz for all your stuff..Shakti the next generation.

  • awesome, saw them a few years back. My uncle knows them all personally. He's working with John McLaughlin, producing/engineering his next album and DVD. how cool is that!

  • can your father let me meet jon becausei made my own music and i think that he s going to love it because he was the source of my inspiration

  • more than amazing! i got chills.

  • Amazing voice that Shankar Mahadevan has

  • I came here to watch John McLaughlin, but was completely wowed by the other musicians... Amazing.

  • I saw this tour here in Vancouver. Incredible show. Shrinivas really stole the show. He was shy at first but midway he just shredded that mandolin. McLaughlin was mindblowing as always.

  • that's awesome..

  • this is amazing, even the white guy is great

  • yes mr silly -sahil even the 'white guy' is great. That's very generous of you.

  • @bazonics LOL bazonics!!

  • @sillysahil hahahah.. The white guy is John McLaughlin .. itna to pata rehna chahiye..

  • @sillysahil

You are quite a dumb-ass.. John McLaughlin is considered the top 3 Guitarists ever... He has grasp of Classical Musical Theory of all kinds. He composes many of these songs.

When he was 30, John McLaughlin was perhaps the best Guitarists alive. Eric Clapton and Slash are the other two. There are many who come equal and close to these three, these three come to mind along with Carlos Santana.

  • @sillysahil wow that's probably the dumbest comment i have ever read on youtube...

  • @sillysahil haha! first time i've heard anyone refer to the great McLaughlin as 'that white guy'. I'm a big fan of Indian classical music, and am yet to see another non-Indian as well versed with the Indian style as him.

  • That's damn good, man, I guess there are many Indian classical scales played, awesome, man -- Keep Ruling, Shankar.

  • Great Work... Simply Awsome... matchless..

  • This video comes from the french culture channel Mezzo, and its from "Jazz à Vienne 2004".

I'm watching it right now, on mezzo ^^

Second time I see it, and I love it...

  • This video is JUST TOO GOOD.. So is the song obviously.. Proud to be an Indian Musician!!

  • Ugh.... listen to some Shakti McLaughlin

  • Johns face reminds me of Stanley Lorrell.

  • Which dvd is this?

  • I love it...from 5:01 to 5:07 John's face says "check this shit out"...gotta love those chords!

  • Almost everyone in this group seems to have a "check this shit out" or "how do you lik them apples" look before or after they have jammed - look for it.... damn each of these guys is a legend .... hope they get together once more for a tour ....

  • Mandolin srinivas is Mazing man

  • this is what you hear when you arrive in heaven....

  • Hello,

Was this video taken from the shakti concert in Paris this year? On the french Mezzo tv? I was at the concert and it was wonderful, i love indian music like that. If you have the entire concert i'd like you to send it me can you please contact me, if you want.

    Bye and thanx a lot

  • i have the whole concert. You can find it on Edonkey or Emule. If not, just get in touch with me n i'll try sending it across to you.

  • dude, I couldnt find it on both the links...can you please help me download this..

  • ..so sweet...pulls at the heart and takes me home 2 remember....im looking 4 a piece..called "love gone away"..from album..touch me there ..i think...L shankar?...know it?...and ty hey...missy

  • Exquisite! I too shall buy the dvd as soon as I can afford it. Thanks for this wonderful video!

  • I bought the dvd because of this video, thank you! But I expected to find exactly this one on it, and I was disapointed to see that it was not. There's this song on it, but it's the one from Bombay and the takes/editing/stage is far from beautiful as much this one. How did you got this vid bazonics?

  • Amazing. Were any of you at the Manchester Shakti gig about 3 years ago. It was electric. The most amazing thing ever. They played really loud. Tabla beating off chest. Everything they do is breathtaking

  • Not Manchester but I did see them at The royal festival hall - London - on that tour. I agree, it was an amazing evening. What was it John said that night? "people are important, not places" :)

  • Can anyone name what album this is from?

  • Sakhi has never been recorded for CD, in fact no RS studio recordings at all with Shankar MahaDevan, only the live 'Saturday night in Bombay'. I live in hope.

  • What a shame. It is such a beautiful piece. Thanks for responding.

  • he could play a cigar box with strings on it

    and it would sound good

  • it's funny, I've come back to listen to this piece over and over...and every time I see your comment, I crack up.

  • it would be alot more soulful if john would play

his acoustic guitar instead of that midi electric

    stuff.... :(

  • There are times when I'd be inclined to agree with you, but in this case I think it works beautifully as it is.

  • Indeed. I felt robbed when I saw them. No acoustic instruments and no violin.

  • The original Shakti was 30 years ago, again, 30 years. Why should they have to keep the same acoustic guitar/violin format. If music doesn't move on and progress it becomes a museum piece. Love the past shakti and love the new.

  • uh...they're basically doing traditional indian raga...that's their thing. If they wanted to "modernize" it, *gag* then they should have called it the New Shakti...or Electric Shakti...and not "Remember Shakti," because they certainly weren't the Shakti I remember. I don't want to see a Genesis reunion with them scratching records on turntables either. And besides, the violins were COMPLETELY missing. If they couldn't get Shankar, they should have gotten somebody.

  • Shakti, 'Reformed' as Remember Shakti, for a series of concerts celebrating the 50th anniversary of India's independence. L.Shankar was asked but refused and was replaced by Hariprasad Chaurasia. IMO 'the wish'off the album is the greatest thing JM has ever played. That was 9 years ago, HC was replaced by U.Shrinivas and then Shankar joined. Point is: it's a fluid progression over time not "lets modernise it"

  • Anyway, Shakti never did 'traditional Indian raga'. They were always a fusion band, mixing north indian with south, jazz and blues. But of course you could rarely see the joins.

  • Hi Bazonics. You said : ``The Wish`` off the album is the greatest thing JM has ever played. Well, i really agree with you ! The Wish is speechless. I have the cd in France but i took it here in Canada because i remembered this piece makes me thrilled each time i listen to it ! McLaughlin is simply the greatest living guitarist. Shawn Lane was also a serious competitor but he died...He played things never heard before. And it is no accident Shawn was focusing on indian music just before he died.

  • I'm with you re Shawn Lane. Sure he could shred, but so much more. Such heart and soul in his playing, 'Savitri' off of G.P.I.T.O.T is just beautiful.

  • Thank you and what a wonderful piece.

Is there a DVD pack or collection of these ?

  • thanks for the comment. No 'fraid not.

  • hahaha john plays acoustic at the same speed. so you are wrong

  • There's something about the acoustic string that evokes the human voice and soul - the qwawali vocals make up for it - but I agree with Anderson2000 - John bends and phrases nylon acoustics amazingly and is much more subdued without them - and the violin is obsessively present in Indian music - he's missed that specific cultural evocation - but this is stunningly beautiful nevertheless - shame about the strings...
