  • Love this song, reminds me of a old friend may he rest in peace! I woke up with this song on my mind for no reason what so ever!!!!

  • Ok Now! I loooove this song! I skated big time to this song back in the day! :-D The best times back then! I remember rushing home every day to watch all these awesome videos on Mtv. That was back when Mtv owned! Today I wouldnt look at Mtv but to spit on it. Oh well, just let the old Mtv rest in peace and remember the good times I say! I do believe there is some religious undertones to this song but I like to think of it as just a relationship that this guy misses. What an awesome song! :-D

  • Hi everybody ! Please check out my channel for our tribute version of this wonderful song. I hope you like it !

  • I cry inside when I hear this song. Timeless.

  • The singer/writer was the Monifieth High School Jannys son!

  • If I can't reach the top of the tree

Mary you can pull me up there.

Save me save me be the light in my eyes.

Thank you for the post whoever you are.

  • Still have the single I bought from HMV during the last Millennium. Analogue rules!

  • Oh for those times when artists were popular because they could sing, play instruments, perform, write etc. not because they are pretty karaoke singers. Simon Cowell you have a lot to answer for.

  • "Mary's Prayer" is one of those songs that reminds you of the ache of unrequited love, the intensity of feeling of loss or missed opportunity that somehow always lurks in the periphery of your heart, even after many years.

A great song, and Gary Clark's voice is perfectly matched to the pathos the words convey.

  • @MrBuddyhollyfan: Well said, sir.

  • Danny Wilson is the name of the band. The singer is Gary Clark.

  • Trilha Sonora Internacional da Novela FERA RADICAL, de 1988! Essa música é tão legal q faz sucesso até hj. Toca direto na Antena 1.

  • What an awesome song! I've loved it since it was released also. I still have the 45 rpm record from when it came out and play it every now and then. Every time I hear it, it brings me back to another time in my life. There's just something about this song that makes it so special.

  • when I hear this song, I hear the voices of my parents from their youth....

  • "If I say ten hail Mary's leave the light on in heaven for me".

    I love it!

  • Danny is geh guy

  • This is the best Steely Dan song that Steely Dan never did...

  • they dont make songs like this anymore really a great 1

  • I wish we heard new songs like this

  • love this tune :) i remember this back in the day! it brings back memories :)

  • What is this song about please?? Is Mary dead or what??

  • Comment removed

  • @marythesmail Granted, I have always loved this song. I always thought it had something to do with the Virgin Mary(and in a religious way, it may). After reading the lyrics, I have come to the realization that it is about a person that had a wonderful person in the palm of his hands, and was her dream come true. He shucked her at the time, and now that he realizes the error of his ways, he stands from afar and always hopes that she will forgive him, plus hold him dear all of the way to heaven.

  • @kemosabe1968 hello! I still dont really get it from the Holy Mary point of view. Its a great tune. I like the song but its a bit weird on the lyrics. I think you are right - its a song of regret for losing someone special and wanting it back. Hmmmmm

  • happy music. sad lyrics.. like that little wahtever that is in teh background. sad and fast..and emo..good.

  • happy music. sad lyrics.. like that little wahtever that is in teh background.

  • this a song that i never hear (ie 20 years ago) but still pops into my head like once a month...its just magical, thanks Danny.

  • Crazy how a song you haven't heard in 20 years just pops into your head. Is it just me or does Danny Wilson look like Dr. Evil from Austin Powers?

  • @scrumtralescence Danny Wilson is the name of the band. The lead singer is Gary Clark...

  • What happened to the original version of this video? Who's the ugly blond that's been inserted at 3:52? Definitely not in the original. Spoils the whole damn thing..

  • If I can't reach the top of your tree

Mary you can pull me up there...

  • ...03:03 Shalom Harlow...wow...so young!

    Please bring back the 80's...

    :-)

  • @hard90 Wow,,good eye!!!

  • @missylvia75 Yeap...Thanx!She was one of my favorites top models of the 90's.

  • this was an amazing song when growing up still sounds great today;; flog it lads ye still get a following

  • A versão com Jason Donovan também ficou muito boa!!! LOL LOL LOL :D

  • wonderful song.

  • Love this song!!

  • The 80's was so interesting when it came to music. You didn't have to be tall or all that good looking, you just had to have a killer sound and look cool doing it. I love this song. Always loved the MTV video. Still find myself humming it out of the blue sometimes and we're talking what ......30 years after the fact? Still going strong in my book Danny.

  • The ultimate one hit wonder, fantastic song!

  • What a wonderful song . I've loved this since it was released . What an uplifting , inspirational piece of music from a vastly underrated band . There is currently a TV show on Scottish TV to compile the 12 greatest pop/rock songs from Scottish artists in the 70's to the present . This must surely appear .!!!

  • Simple more is less video. Song with an eternal theme. Shame his hat was too small - bit bigger and he would have looked a bit more Clint Eastwood. Still an epic song and band tho.

  • Love it xx

  • beautiful song, beautiful voice.

  • Lagrimita...

Really, in the 80's you could hear instant classics every month, of every genre. I mean every genre.

  • One of the masterpices of the 80`s middles decade...

(And there were more groups, too)

    (In flourecent colors...)

  • Danny Wilson were a Scottish band from Dundee. They chose the name from a character in a Frank Sinatra movie! Great song guys!

  • vevo is wierd!

  • Great Song!!!

  • EXCELENTE VIDEO !!! LA MUSICA DE LOS 80´S FUE Y SERA LA MEJOR !!

  • I don`t like this song... I love it =]

  • @GhostsInMyAttic

    IT maks me cry

  • @burnedherk Why does it make you cry?

  • Classic 80's tune.

  • love this song and there are no more good music video channels we only have vh1 soul and vh1 classic thats all its all reality shows now and that shit sucks bring back tv and quality programing who cares about rich spoiled ass people and teen moms thats life get over it

  • Don't make theym like this any more.

There isn't even a decent music channel showing classic music any more, is there?

I never thought I'd transfer to being a VH1 viewer so soon, but MTV went downhill fast when they started all those reality tv shows in 1998.

  • 12 people like Lady Gaga instead..........

  • 347 people didn't kneel for the prayer...

  • love this song!! :-)

  • These dudes should have been the next Steely Dan... ,beautiful melody, music with some substance.

  • Something About Mary brought me here!!

  • I JUS'T LOVE IT!!!!

  • DW hit #23 in Billboard, 9-5-87. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!

  • I didn't discover this song until early 2010 when I've heard it on the 80s station from Music Choice, this song should have been a much bigger hit than a modest #23 on the Billboard Top 100

  • Great song, I can picture Daryl Hall doing this song either on his own or with Hall & Oates

  • From the summer of 1987... great instrumentation, lyrics, vocals, harmonies... it's like the PERFECT song.

  • Back when music was still good. May be its different now. You use to look forward to new music. That might have been different. The lead singer always kind of reminded me of Robert Downey Jr when was in his early twenties.

  • finally found out the name of this song :) took a long time

  • @wolfpredatorX2 I knew the name of the song, but for some reason I thought it was by ELO. :P

  • hermosa cancion hermosa

  • classic!

    brilliant band

  • Holy smoke i haven't heard this amazing song since quite a while!

  • LOVE this song, it always put me in good mood, I guess uplifting is the word for it.

  • Reminds me of college, the love of my life, and the girl who stomped on my balls and my heart. Oh well she now has no chin, divorced, and an upside down mortgage, serves her right LOL!

  • I though this was a Englishman, now I've just found out it's 3 Scottish guys; it all makes sense. Scottish 80's pop was the best in the world...REAL MUSIC...the realest music in the world. Those softies down could nay compete. SCOTLAND FOREVER!

  • No matter how many good songs may come out today, it seems that nothing ever makes me feel the way this stuff did back in the 80's.

  • @mrhoffame That's one of the best comments on here.

  • @Ice79cold lol Thanks. Isn't it the truth though? Songs today just seem to really be missing something. I think back in the 80's the songs were more about the sound and the melody it put out to people. Today I think music seems to focus more so on the artist "expressing" themselves to the world. I mean artist in the 80's had just as many problems as kids today, but yet much of the music was not as dark in the 80's as it is today. Just my opinion

  • @mrhoffame ..i TOTALLY agree...

  • Timothy Spall's favourite on Desert Island Discs

  • Been around a long time now guys, and this is a pop classic in any era. Still playing the vinyl album, and good to know vinyl is hot again. Get a good TT, and get into it.

  • spot the baldy man: clue he's wearing a hat

  • Reminds me of my first love. Makes me sad to have lost such a love and thankful to have experienced it at the same time.

  • lucky jim your talking shite

  • Mary is the girl who got away. Those who had, and lost, a Mary, understand this song. My god, what I wouldn't give to be, when i was Mary's prayer.

  • @LuckyJimDixon The best description ever that Jim, unfortunately im one of those that understand the song but hey life goes on and this song is very uplifting in a funny kind of way!

  • believe it or not this song is about their grandmother . 100% fact

my mum use to look after her in her later years in a sheltered housing complex in dundee

  • Some of the cartoons in this video remind me of those Sting used for his 'Bring On The Night' live album and video in 1985, wonder if they're by the same guy. I love this song. Had forgotton about it til the other day when heard it on the radio!

  • The lead singer looks like Duff Goldman (Ace of Cakes). i LOVE this song!! Thank you so much for making an old man remember better times!!!

  • The Bass players flat top is rock`n =]

  • is a very beautifull song!!!!

  • I still perform this live - always loved it - and no-one takes a blind bit of notice! (Same with the Del Amitri stuff I try to sneak in too).

  • This is for sure a great feel-good song.

  • Love the song, hate the video.

  • save me save me be the light in my eyes!!! fantastic lyrics.....

  • This is such a terrific song, but such an awful video. Talk about missing the whole theme of this tune. A real shame as the song has so much emotion to it, but you wouldn't know if watching this nonsense. You wonder if the director had even listen to the tune before developing the video.

  • @harvey1954 I've noticed that most directors do not follow the songs of any singer. They usually film what they please at the spur of the moment. Usually the content of the video does not reflect the song it supposedly portrays. I personally think that most directors are either idiots or megalomaniacs.

  • @AguacateDulce Agreed, I wonder if the band showed up and the director listened to the song while he was filming it. There certainly seems to be no hint of planning ahead. This just seems to be a really bad video considering what the song says. It actually distracts from the song's mood.

  • 3:03 between this Mary and the Cameron Diaz's, which is prettier ? or Marry Queen?

  • This was one of my favorite songs and I would listen to it over and over which was hard back in the day because you had to keep rewinding the tape...I think I still have it in my stash.

  • great song - bur 60s the greatest decade for music xxxx

  • GREAT SONG!!! TIMELESS....

  • top tune brings back memories save me save me.......such a happy tune

  • The best musics from the 60's, 70's and of course the 80's.

  • Danny Wilson was amazing. I would like to see them reunite. They were just awesome.

  • THE 80S MUSIC IS THE BEST !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @MrChucknoris101

Agreed and still some of the great singers, bands around today. Depeche Mode, Duran Duran etc

    80's always a great time ,-)

  • Is it because we lived through the 80's we consider it the best for music or was it just the best decade ever? I suspect it's the latter..

  • Superb Song, Superb Group--It never ever gets old...

  • found he is really wanting Gary not Mary all about Gary

  • it is catchy --never heard it before..

  • I heard it at work on our muzak system. I knew the song but I hadn't heard it in so many years it was like awesome.

  • Fantastic Song! The bassist, Ged Grimes, is my second cousin, and the song was written about my great grandmother Mary after she passed away!...couldn't believe it when i found out! Wish they were still going!

  • one of the vest songs out of this era for sure. there just aint nothin wrong with it. Very enjoyable and timeless for sure. love it. Heard it at work the other nite when I was slaving away doing hard labor, it brought a tere to my eye.

  • This song is beyond beautiful: it is sublime! What a great voice the singer had!

  • Fuck Vevo... can't watch this now.

  • my mum loves this song.

    she says its beautiful

  • A truly classy summer tune - upbeat , bittersweet and effortless. An anthem for anybody who's ever let ' the one' slip through their fingers.......

Lucky for me I didn't - but the financial scars ever since ? Ohhhh the scars....

  • I remember when I first heard this in 1988. I fell in love with it instantly. It took me nearly a decade to find out who sang it and see the video. Thank you internet! Danny Wilson should have been a megastar with this song!

  • One of my favorite songs of all time. A timeless classic that should have propelled Danny Wilson to superstardom.

  • music by Danny Wilson wonderful

  • Misic by Danny Wilson wonderful

  • The DJ said here in the Philippines said.

They got the name of a old frank sinatra film.

  • @aquamarine094 They do get it, but it's just from all of us here and out there, and I hope they know that:)

  • @aquamarine094

a resounding amen, hell yeah, etc. :)

  • I thought this song was just brilliant and was sooo overlooked. So beautiful!!

  • this was the first song id put on jukebox in the local pub back in the summer of 87 what great days

  • @terrykemp55 I still put it on now! ;)

  • Don't know why this song reminded me of Cameron Diaz, Ben Stiller, & Matt Dillon.

  • Don't know why this song reminded me of Cameron Diaz, Ben Stiller, & Matt Dillion.

  • @searchenginesemseo You should...

  • Dare I say it? A top 5 80's song...There I said it!

Also on the list: Motor Town by the Kane Gang, Everybody Wants to Rule the World, True and True Faith by New Order.

  • It's unfortunate that in 87 most people didn't know this song or ever heard it on the radio....fortunately, these days more people are aware of this song through media. Should have been a HUGE hit back in the day.

  • @ultraroadmap I remember this always being on the radio. It was on our local radio station anyway...

  • @Xxfancythat79xX In my area it wasn't heavily played on the radio, but on MTV it was on quite a bit and I have a feeling was heard more through TV. Should have been a mega hit as far as I'm concerned!
