@akarcorp You are right on time with your comment! another single word for his style would be FLUID. Look at him and quickly look at a fight of Marvelous Marvin Hagler. What you see is a calm breaking down of an opponent like a small axe to a tree. To a fighter or former fighter few things are as beautiful.
Also did anyone notice Matsui's subconscious reaction everytime he easily defeated someone? He raises his left hand to his mouth and seems to completely lose interest in the fight.
Why do ppl keep saying Kuyokushin is japanese? Kyokushin is KOREAN KARATE. Yea thats why u see alot of axe kicks and spinning hook kicks, like in taekwondo.
Mas Oyama changed his name when he escaped from korea because the japanese were in korea at the time, he was born korean learned martial arts in korea has a korean wife and has korean children. Tada! Look it up kids :]
but trained with gichin funakoshi and hironori ohtsuka in karate when he got to japan. theres a korean influence in the kicking but this is still essentially based on japanese karate and i would say the essence is still japanese with the one hit one kill philosophy.
Surely taekwondo is the best suited to the title japanese karate as it is the result of choi mixing shotokan (japanese) and Taekyun (korean).
@KoreAHNO well... the early okinawan stuff (tomari, nahate, shurite) were based on chinese tang shou i think... alot of the basic katas including sanchin and tensho are derived from katas of various chinese martial arts like the crane and such... not an expert on martial arts history but it's pretty certain that karate was influenced heavily by chinese martial arts. at the same time... "kyokushin is chinese" would probably be a false statement-_-
i wont deny kyukoshin and other disciplines and concepts based around kyukoshin karate is amazing you really have to have shins of steel chests as strong as brick walls and knuckles the size of gorillas
well, in kyokushin you punch a lot of hard things, it puts scar tissue over the knuckles. Making them seem like they 'sunk' in your hand...still awesome.
However, c'mon mates, kyokushin is hard and real tough and there are many schools that train with face punches as well(with gloves etc) to compliment their training.
It's not logical to make excuses for the absence of face punching in KK tournaments,it's just how you choose to organize your competitions,it doesn't mean that you on't know how to punch if need be BUT:
KOing someone with a punch isn't as easy sa you describe it in order to support the format of your competitions.
I believe Royamas Kyokushinkan has introduced head punching(with gloves)after the 1st round of a fight during its tournaments which seems like a good development .
i thought punches to the head are not permitted because too many people were getting hurt. plus didnt mas oyama kill a guy w/a punch to the head? anyways great video
As it almost have been said. Punches to the head are not permitted because it is too easy to hit a guy in the head, to make a knockout without hitting the head is much harder, and if you can punch in the chest then you can easily punch in the head too if you need it.
@lakshen47 no, headpunches have been removed because they didn't want to use any kind of protections, and barekuckled headpunches would cause a bloodbath. If you never trained to punch the head in combat situation, your body will never use them on instinct like you'd like to believe it. It's like self-defense: their is a huge gap between knowing an escape/counter during training and effectively using it in a real situation.
@akarcorp I wasn't saying Matsui Kancho needs to learn SD, i was using SD as an example to explain that moves have to be trianed regularly if you want to be able to bring them out on reflex
knees to chest area, but above belt, as well as kicks
punches to body are legal but not to face, because if the punches to the face were alowwed the matches would be bloody and short, and the fact that u can only punch to the body shows chest strength for both fighters, and requires a little more skill, because it limits you to only punching ur opponent in one general area
For safety reasons there are no punches to the head but they dont wear gloves though full contact kicks to head and body are allowed and full contact punches to the body are also allowed this in line with Kyokushin full contact knock down tournament rules.
what an excelent video.... ive heard a lot of kyokushin but never thought it would be like this. I practice irikumi under goku ryu and is similar but this video is awesome
what good would being able to kick to the chest do for the average person getting robbed. i'd rather set my feet up with punches to the head, i understand this is a compititon but it's a waste of time...
i have .. lol i broke my ribs before in a Muay thai fight. not koo! i agree with u cmcshane06 , koykushin isnt a waste of time. MMA fighter like me have a back ground in kyokushin. Started with kyokushin when i was young... going to Muay thai. GSP in UFC have a black belt in kyokushin as well
I have to say, Matsui really does look like he is quite laid back in his techniques (if that is the correct way of describing it). Of other things i've seen him do, he has the same frame of mind. And his kicks? They are pretty cool.
You saw correctly. To be in tune with your opponent during sparring you must be calm. This isn't always easy, and the fighter's ability to stay calm during a fight determines the winner.

I would'nt like to take a kick to the chest from Matsui.
And as for Kyokushin being a waste of time. It's the best style of karate. i hope to train in it one day, as for now i'll have to stick with Goju Ryu.
It's also possible to KO someone with strikes to the chest. It does on awful lot of damage, broken ribs e.t.c.
Has anyone here ever been kicked in the solar plexus? You'll know what i mean, i decent kick there will KO someone.
