Well here's hoping that this decade has some decent pop culture in it. I feel like it will, I think pop culture goes in cycles. In the 90s it was all about the indie scene, in the 00s it was all about the commercial scene. The 80s also had a large amount of commercial music, the 70s was about more indie rock. There is a correlation between the two mainly because as big business rise and fall, so do their products.

In the 00s mass communications were popular, the 90s was more about individuals on a local level.
