  • Brave man

  • AMAZING interview. I mean I'm a huge fan of both of these men and Dave is one of the best talk show hosts out there. And while he goes along during the interview without breaking you can tell there are moments that he's having a very hard time doing his job. I think just the sombre tone (especially for a Letterman interview) and the way Dave seems to relish every word Zevon says shows there is a very deeply rooted compassion between these two men. Which makes for the best of interviews.

  • EVERY FUCKING SANDWICH

  • Warren speaks truth

  • happy birthday warren!

  • very, very and I mean very underrated musicains ever.

  • @kinkyirishman Absolutely.

  • Only 1.1961722488038278% dislike....not enough to not enjoy your sandwich over!

  • "Enjoy every sandwich..."

    Right on, Warren...

  • Great class, Dave.

  • Given the context, this song genuinely makes me cry. "Enjoy every sandwich". Brought up on his music by my parents, there will never be a song writer like him.

  • rock and roll hall of fame is a joke apparently they've taken waaaay too long

  • Nine years ago today...

  • ya know i was gonna post a comment about the dislikers but im to busy crying

  • I will always love Dave for doing this. What an incredible tribute to Warren. Ive never seen Dave talk someone up like this, and the way that Warren can joke and be so open about his own death, its almost inspiring to watch. Dave couldnt have given him a greater gift than that night. And Warren totally nailed his performances. He died far to soon but enjoyed every sandwhich along the way and never compromised. The man died proud R.I.P Warren

  • @NumbAsAStatue27 amen. it brought tears to my eyes to see the truly sincere, loving embrace by Dave...it's obvious they had a special friendship and that it meant a lot to Dave having Warren on the show one more time...so many of WZ's songs are indelibly imprinted in my brain and on my heart (btw, I currently live at the exact street address one street away from where Dave grew up as a kid...the grade school he attended is two blocks away and the H.S. he went to is 6 blocks from here)

  • @oneirishpoet You cant help but shed a few tears when you see it. I still do to this day. Dave always loved having Warren on the show, he said that Warren was one of the family there and he always did great when he sat in for Paul Schaffer. It must have killed him to see Warren go. Not that it was easy for any of us but him in particular. Thats awesome though, I wish i could say i lived somewhere like that

  • Everyone dies. It is inevitable, but unfortunate. Zevon handles it with such warm acceptance, and I wish I could have as much grace about it when it's my time

  • @PInk77W1 lance armstrong got cancer..?

  • Dont be sad. He was great about his death. I love his humor

  • 1 more person tried their luck and hit the dislike button inspite of Jetulez 15 warnug, and guess what they got mauled too. Nothing was left was their big toe. Worst part is they were warned.

  • I wish I was a bigger fan of Warren Zevon while he was living. He was a true genious & treasure. I have all of his releases & love these videos. he was a very special man. Rest In Peace Buddy....We Miss You.

  • Breaks my heart to watch this. So tragic.

  • He died the same week as Johnny Cash. And Bush was President. Life isn't fair.

  • @roydoo What a shitty week.

  • Case in point... if you're wondering if you're sick, GO TO THE DOCTOR!! My friend Phil refused to go to the doctor for a year after his wife noticed the blotch on his back. When he finally went (after a male friend saw it and gasped!) the melanoma had metastasized. He's dead now, when all that really needed to happen was some surgery that would have only required local anesthesia.

Warren might be alive today if he had only gone to the doctor when his symptoms first appeared. 8^(

  • @thelisamannshow i think if u just dont smoke, u r miles ahead of the game. i dont go to doctors but i dont smoke dont drink and i ride bicycles 1000s of miles per year

  • @PInk77W1 Good for you, but that means nothing. People get cancer for no reason.

  • @bradystjames "people get cancer for no reason." I dont think so

  • @bradystjames Guessin you don't read the news much or are not very old. I know people that have had cancer and dont smoke ,drink or anything. My aunt being one.

  • We miss ya, Warren. RIP.

  • 1/24/1947 ~ 9/7/2003 R.I.P. Warren. Enjoy every sandwich! <3

  • I was/am a Linda Ronstandt fan in the sixties and seventies. In an interview she noted her "idols" to be Lowell George and Warren Zevon. I was ignorant. I learned and admired. I miss them.

  • Yo Rod,

    remember watching this?

  • Heartbreaking

  • 3:57 to start the interview.

  • @2112murphy lol I just got done...no lie. That's why im "here".

  • Dave is a vampire, he never changes as he gets older. Warren Zevon is the most underrated artist there ever was. If Allah had given him giant breasts, he would have been the lady Gaga of his time.

  • It's hard to say Enlightenment ever ends with the intervention of Angels ever becoming. Vale Zevon. Resurrectas In Potenti, Audio.

  • What a brave guy.

  • The HOF must be boycotted. Waren Zevon is not a member.Yet Paul and the band are the house band and Dave never mentions Warren. I watched this when it originality aired. Can't watch it again yet,,,

  • The HOF must be boycotted. Waren Zevon is not a member.Yet Paul and the band are the house band and Dave never mentions Warren.

  • BOYCOTT the HOF.

  • Why do the words and lips not match up?

  • enjoy every sandwich...

  • 7 people who disliked this video got mauled by the Werewolves of London

  • @Jetrulez15 8 people work for the CIA and were killed by Roland

  • RIP Warren Zevon

  • A lot of respect to Letterman for paying tribute to the great Warren Zevon.

  • what date was this?

  • WARNING this comment is very predictable and i am very sorry for posting it but i seriously couldnt resist. well here it goes.

did his doctor tell him his shit's fucked up

  • what a beautiful human being. Very few of these people walking the earth.

  • warren filled in for paul? didnt even know. i love it. only the best... comin from a young man..

  • How sad. Love this guys quirky soulful songs.

  • @2112murphy I said the same thing about REM and Green Day. They made their debuts on Letterman as well. But for the present time I feel tempted to listen to more of Warren's music I really enjoyed The Wind. I really love my rock.

  • 7 People don't enjoy every sandwich.

  • You can't start it like a car. You can't stop it with a gun.

    - Warren Zevon on Love.

  • @shimokita2

" That's probably what he meant when he wrote it...."

  • enjoy every sandwich

  • A Poet - A Singer and Great Song writter....Never mind a performer/Rock Star.

  • Thank You Warren, and thank you MFF for posting this - I can't recall how many times I've watched it. Wish you were here Warren, I'll see you up there one day.

  • Dave is # 1

  • All i can say is CLASS.

  • Warren stole a song from Frank Sinatra and turned it into his final act...He did it HIS way....RIP: Warren....

  • The ONLY time Lettermen EVER dedicated an entire complete shopw to one artist. it was also one of warren's last public appearances before he passed away from lung cancer at a very you age of 50-something, I believe.

  • @2112murphy: Incorrect. You must be young.

  • I heard Warren gave David his guitar, a kind of thanks for all the times Letterman supported him, and David cried like a baby. Yes, Warren was a very strange man (I read his bio by his wife) but what a brilliant guy. We wore the grooves off his records back in the day....

  • I love David. He interviews well. I would love him just for the music he puts on time and time again. This had to be so tough. What a great show. I miss Warren Zevon constantly. I thought it would get a bit better by now. God bless and thank you for all the good times you spread around. You are loved, Mr. Zevon.

  • "Enjoy Every Sandwich" My favorit sentence ever

  • well said paul!

  • It's a pity we have to sit through Letterman's verbal diarrhoaea before we get to hear the great man

  • @Russkiejim So you prefer Leno, eh?

  • @Russkiejim What an idiotic comment.

  • Dave is a great fan, but he has to read the titles off a page..bullshit.

  • @tallpaul521 its not like david didnt know the song names, he just read the program for that night. theres a big difference. and yes, they 2 go way back. they were friends in real life. zevon had been on the show several times as well

  • David is the best friend my music ever had... Isn't that wonderfull?

I do have to say I love Letterman and Paul. Warren Zevon was a *Great Musician

  • I do have to say I love Letterman and Paul

  • when was this show?

  • @k3304 dude...he did a lot of things....but regardless, he made some goddamn fine music...

  • Check out 'imthewhitestkiduknow' he's got some really good gameplay/commentary of black ops mw2 and mw.subscribe to him if you like his videos.

  • He comes out at 4:08 for those that just want to see him

  • Why Warren Zevon is not in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame I will never know.

  • @John1P5 i will never know either...

  • I got one tattoo. Had it done 20 years ago. Now I'm thinking of having another. Lyrics to a song this guy wrote.

  • The man is sitting there, and he's dieing. And he knows he's dieing. And Letterman knows, he's dieing. And we knew he's dieing.

And Dave, was a fuckin' class act. And Warren, was always a class act.

God grant me the grace to be so cool, when my time comes.

  • Its awesome to see Dave actually GUSH over a guest...

  • For those who may not be familiar with Warren Zevon his "back story" and why I wanted to share...., take a look and THINK!

PS MtY friends "Enjoy Every Sandwich!"

  • Will always respect Letterman for dedicating a whole show to Warren and his music, and for all the other shows. Great man

  • R.I.P. Warren. This appearance touched me so much..and his music..well, I say thank God For Warren Zevon. And Dave too.

  • Futurephyics, it's to late. You'd have to go to rock and romm heaven and have him reborn to inform him of your powers.

  • im an independent autodidact cancer research and developer and have curative options for lung cancer as well as other cancers and its a shame to know i could help this guy and others but nobody will listen to me, just look at my research! if you or someone you know has cancer msg me and i will be their personal helper and if you can get ahold of this guy please contact him and have him look at my profile

  • letterman's so right when he says you haven't even scratched the surface...one week ago i thought searching for a heart was my fav now i can't decide between the indifference of heaven and suzy lightning

  • One of the most underrated and best musicans ever

  • Mesothelioma is a terrible disease, you literally run out of breath, its got from exposure to asbestos and there is no cure, such a talent taken too soon

  • You know its hard, single malt scotch whiskey in that coffee mug.

  • This young man's a real up-and-comer. Who is he?

  • Wow, I was born in '94. But I grew up listening to Warren Zevon. This made me sad

  • Wow the way he handles it is inspiring, love his music.

  • Comment removed

  • Am I the only person who thinks that this was basically Warren Zevon's own memorial service?

  • @allnewtpir - I agree with you that it definitely was his own memorial service.

  • @allnewtpir I agree with you.

  • @allnewtpir -- I'd say that's a pretty fair assessment. And what a fine one it is, to boot!

  • This was the kindest thing Letterman EVER did. This was so wonderful. Warren's memory will always be kept in my heart. I just love him and his music.

  • @owlie1961

Yeah, this was pretty fucking classy on Letterman's part. Letterman has said and done some stupid shit (I like Letterman more than say Leno, but not as much as Stewart and Stromboulopoulos). Definitely earned Letterman a great deal of respect in my eyes.

  • Thanks for posting this. I was a Warren Zevon fan starting with his eponymous 1976 album but missed this.

  • Great interview, but PLEASE synch up the audio with the video!

  • remembering a wild show at the LA roxy. people making out under the table, everyone drinking way too much. warren breaking a piano string at one point. and, at the end, an actual, legitimate extra encore, after the house lights had been turned on. people stomping for more, warren coming out nearly in tears for one more. we'll keep him in our hearts for more than awhile.

  • Tactical error, dry cleaning, don't be fooled by cosmetics, they don't discourage you from doing what you want, if Dr. Stan can't fix it, enjoy every sandwich, Daves the best friend my music has ever had......All words spoken by a man who was so near death at the time, he didn't look at it as a death sentence, but as a part of life and he lived it out to the fullest. WOW, now theres something we can all learn.

  • "Well, I guess you better get your dry cleaning done on special."

  • great artist, his music is all class, it will never die.

  • I had the privilege of seeing him at least 5 times, at a little club called The Chance in Poughkeepsie, NY. And 1 time at The Stone Pony in Asbury Park., N.J.

I also watched this when it originally aired. It made me cry, and I still miss him.

    RIP Warren

  • <3 the awkward silence

  • That is probably what he meant when he wrote that

  • @heitmanek1 can't start it like a car can't stop it with a gun

  • Lawyers gun and money

  • warren zevon is greatness no doubt

  • Send Lawyers, Guns, and Money

The shit has hit the fan

    RIP Warren.

  • Zevon was a genius. His music lives on. It's great to see this whole show-- thanks for posting it. This is why Letterman was/is/always will be so much more important than Leno could dream of being-- he knows and loves artists like Warren Zevon. Now Leno's beating Dave in the ratings? That just proves the world's full of idiots. Pretty sure we already knew that, yeah? Rock on, Dave. Have a sweet sleep, Warren.

  • @moondough

dave is definitely the best talk show host.

wayyyyy funnier than any other one, knows his stuff AND is great buddies with HUGE stars like Bill Murray, Warren, Chevy Chase.

  • @rakuencallisto

Chevy Chase, a huge star. Right.

  • @throcka

???? if you hadn't noticed, everyone I mentioned were huge stars in the 70s and 80s.

I don't understand how you can't recognize Chase as a huge star.

  • @moondough u cnt go around callin ppl tht watch a different show than other ppl idiot and in my opinion letterman and leno's shows r both boring as shit

  • @moondough Leno has never been funny and Letterman hasn't been funny in literally a decade and a half.

  • @moondough it's because Letterman sucks when it comes to comedy. he does have better guests though

  • I've only recently discovered Warren Zebon through the work of another late great Dr.Hunter S Thompson, and man,he could really deliver a fine song! RIP Warren & RIP Hunter. The world is less fun & interesting without you both.

  • Enjoy every sandwich R.I.P Warren Z

  • R.I.P Warren. It's hard not to cry every time i hear "Keep me in Your Heart" after hearing your story.

  • I don't think were many guys Letterman liked better.

  • why I keep coming back to this I dont know why its 4:30 am

  • @MrRandysavage81 cause ya got a good heart.

  • R.I.P To the motherfucking greatest

  • love warren. and dave has a good heart

  • I taped this when it was on, cried through the whole thing, adored Warren, his music rocks you and makes you laugh at the same time, he was indeed the definition of fearless...I listen to his music almost daily...kick ass where ver you are Warren, despite his sometimes turbulent self, I worshiped him. I bought his book, great insights into man I call the Troubled Genius...see you in the next life sweetheart...

  • that was one brave MFr! R.I.P.

  • this is the definition of fearless.

  • yes, fearless... and humorful... moves me every time I watch it.

  • warren is the best... merry xmas warren

  • One of the best literary lyric writers ever...

  • It continues to be a slap in the face of music that Warren is not yet in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...

  • I will give you that. He died much too soon. I have The Wind it is a really great album.

  • Agreed, he should have been there years ago.

  • @clcjr Im disgusted that he's not

  • @clcjr Can I call for everyone here to be aware of the facebook page calling for Warren to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Please join. Maybe the human landslide will make a difference...

  • @diamondjimlegend It will never make a difference. Landau and Wenner have no clue as to who should be in and who shouldn't and have done a sh*t job with the hall of fame.

  • I learned about WZ during the show Californication. He so touches my heart. Thank you, God, for Warren Zevon.

  • Me to....and yeah this guys is a God....Californication presents us with great music...

  • @kabint great show, one of the first i can truly appreciate!

  • ...and you're an underrated hack

  • Can YOU do better?

  • "it was a tactical error on my part for not seeing a doctor for 20 years"... lol. To know that your time is short and still be able crack jokes, its awesome. It makes you appreciate things a lot more. RIP Warren Zevon... I'd like to meet his taylor.

  • @bmaguire1981

Sorry for that mistake... . I will carry you here for the long run... . Thanks.... for your life... ALL of it... .

  • what a wonderfull guy he is :-)

  • thisis heartbreaking...RIP Warren, I've loved you since I am 15 I'm 46 now.

  • Bless you Warren.

  • BrunoG-"Daves the best friend my music ever had"-Warren was supported and admired by Letterman for years. Lettermans choice to book the full hour was a tribute to the man and in fact an act of total class. It was the last time in the spotlight for a great artist. Warren wasn't exactly making the late night circuit. This was a great night, I remember watching this. Thanks for posting it.

  • @Brunogirlfriend That is ridiculous. Lettererman did not make any money by having Zevon on for the entire hour instead of a guaranteed ratings generator like Julia Roberts.

  • Wow, I signed up for YouTube specifically so I could respond to this idiotic comment. I don't have any problem with pushing their product on talk shows, that's what talk shows are for. But Dave did something really special here, and to not recognize that, unless you are being ironic, means you are a complete moron. I hope you're being ironic.

That said, ZEVON!! Hope you're at rest, you magnificent bastard..

  • Always love you, Warren.

  • WOW,very cool singer, and song writer,I got to get hip to this guy's work.

  • Hail ZEVON !!!!!!!!!!! there is no one Better.

  • I remember this show, also the show after Warren had passed away. Very touching. Letterman has such class.

Warren has such humor about it...a tactical error... one of those paranoias that didn't pay off.

  • You can't start it like a car, you can't stop it with a gun...
