AMAZING interview. I mean I'm a huge fan of both of these men and Dave is one of the best talk show hosts out there. And while he goes along during the interview without breaking you can tell there are moments that he's having a very hard time doing his job. I think just the sombre tone (especially for a Letterman interview) and the way Dave seems to relish every word Zevon says shows there is a very deeply rooted compassion between these two men. Which makes for the best of interviews.
Given the context, this song genuinely makes me cry. "Enjoy every sandwich". Brought up on his music by my parents, there will never be a song writer like him.
I will always love Dave for doing this. What an incredible tribute to Warren. Ive never seen Dave talk someone up like this, and the way that Warren can joke and be so open about his own death, its almost inspiring to watch. Dave couldnt have given him a greater gift than that night. And Warren totally nailed his performances. He died far to soon but enjoyed every sandwhich along the way and never compromised. The man died proud R.I.P Warren
@NumbAsAStatue27 amen. it brought tears to my eyes to see the truly sincere, loving embrace by Dave...it's obvious they had a special friendship and that it meant a lot to Dave having Warren on the show one more time...so many of WZ's songs are indelibly imprinted in my brain and on my heart (btw, I currently live at the exact street address one street away from where Dave grew up as a kid...the grade school he attended is two blocks away and the H.S. he went to is 6 blocks from here)
@oneirishpoet You cant help but shed a few tears when you see it. I still do to this day. Dave always loved having Warren on the show, he said that Warren was one of the family there and he always did great when he sat in for Paul Schaffer. It must have killed him to see Warren go. Not that it was easy for any of us but him in particular. Thats awesome though, I wish i could say i lived somewhere like that
Everyone dies. It is inevitable, but unfortunate. Zevon handles it with such warm acceptance, and I wish I could have as much grace about it when it's my time

Case in point... if you're wondering if you're sick, GO TO THE DOCTOR!! My friend Phil refused to go to the doctor for a year after his wife noticed the blotch on his back. When he finally went (after a male friend saw it and gasped!) the melanoma had metastasized. He's dead now, when all that really needed to happen was some surgery that would have only required local anesthesia.
Warren might be alive today if he had only gone to the doctor when his symptoms first appeared. 8^(

Yeah, this was pretty fucking classy on Letterman's part. Letterman has said and done some stupid shit (I like Letterman more than say Leno, but not as much as Stewart and Stromboulopoulos). Definitely earned Letterman a great deal of respect in my eyes.
remembering a wild show at the LA roxy. people making out under the table, everyone drinking way too much. warren breaking a piano string at one point. and, at the end, an actual, legitimate extra encore, after the house lights had been turned on. people stomping for more, warren coming out nearly in tears for one more. we'll keep him in our hearts for more than awhile.
Tactical error, dry cleaning, don't be fooled by cosmetics, they don't discourage you from doing what you want, if Dr. Stan can't fix it, enjoy every sandwich, Daves the best friend my music has ever had......All words spoken by a man who was so near death at the time, he didn't look at it as a death sentence, but as a part of life and he lived it out to the fullest. WOW, now theres something we can all learn.
I had the privilege of seeing him at least 5 times, at a little club called The Chance in Poughkeepsie, NY. And 1 time at The Stone Pony in Asbury Park., N.J.
I also watched this when it originally aired. It made me cry, and I still miss him.
Zevon was a genius. His music lives on. It's great to see this whole show-- thanks for posting it. This is why Letterman was/is/always will be so much more important than Leno could dream of being-- he knows and loves artists like Warren Zevon. Now Leno's beating Dave in the ratings? That just proves the world's full of idiots. Pretty sure we already knew that, yeah? Rock on, Dave. Have a sweet sleep, Warren.
@moondough u cnt go around callin ppl tht watch a different show than other ppl idiot and in my opinion letterman and leno's shows r both boring as shit
I've only recently discovered Warren Zebon through the work of another late great Dr.Hunter S Thompson, and man,he could really deliver a fine song! RIP Warren & RIP Hunter. The world is less fun & interesting without you both.
I taped this when it was on, cried through the whole thing, adored Warren, his music rocks you and makes you laugh at the same time, he was indeed the definition of fearless...I listen to his music almost daily...kick ass where ver you are Warren, despite his sometimes turbulent self, I worshiped him. I bought his book, great insights into man I call the Troubled Genius...see you in the next life sweetheart...
@clcjr Can I call for everyone here to be aware of the facebook page calling for Warren to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Please join. Maybe the human landslide will make a difference...
@diamondjimlegend It will never make a difference. Landau and Wenner have no clue as to who should be in and who shouldn't and have done a sh*t job with the hall of fame.
"it was a tactical error on my part for not seeing a doctor for 20 years"... lol. To know that your time is short and still be able crack jokes, its awesome. It makes you appreciate things a lot more. RIP Warren Zevon... I'd like to meet his taylor.
BrunoG-"Daves the best friend my music ever had"-Warren was supported and admired by Letterman for years. Lettermans choice to book the full hour was a tribute to the man and in fact an act of total class. It was the last time in the spotlight for a great artist. Warren wasn't exactly making the late night circuit. This was a great night, I remember watching this. Thanks for posting it.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Actually, letterman has NO class, and he doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Zevon. This is letterman doing his job and making money. Zevon is great. letterman is a turd.
@Brunogirlfriend That is ridiculous. Lettererman did not make any money by having Zevon on for the entire hour instead of a guaranteed ratings generator like Julia Roberts.
Wow, I signed up for YouTube specifically so I could respond to this idiotic comment. I don't have any problem with pushing their product on talk shows, that's what talk shows are for. But Dave did something really special here, and to not recognize that, unless you are being ironic, means you are a complete moron. I hope you're being ironic.
That said, ZEVON!! Hope you're at rest, you magnificent bastard..

It continues to be a slap in the face of music that Warren is not yet in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...
clcjr 2 years ago 43
I will give you that. He died much too soon. I have The Wind it is a really great album.
RealTime88 2 years ago 2
Agreed, he should have been there years ago.

@clcjr Im disgusted that he's not
itchycrox 1 year ago
@clcjr Can I call for everyone here to be aware of the facebook page calling for Warren to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Please join. Maybe the human landslide will make a difference...
diamondjimlegend 11 months ago 2

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Actually, letterman has NO class, and he doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Zevon. This is letterman doing his job and making money. Zevon is great. letterman is a turd.
Brunogirlfriend 2 years ago
@Brunogirlfriend That is ridiculous. Lettererman did not make any money by having Zevon on for the entire hour instead of a guaranteed ratings generator like Julia Roberts.

Wow, I signed up for YouTube specifically so I could respond to this idiotic comment. I don't have any problem with pushing their product on talk shows, that's what talk shows are for. But Dave did something really special here, and to not recognize that, unless you are being ironic, means you are a complete moron. I hope you're being ironic.
That said, ZEVON!! Hope you're at rest, you magnificent bastard..

I remember this show, also the show after Warren had passed away. Very touching. Letterman has such class.
Warren has such humor about it...a tactical error... one of those paranoias that didn't pay off.
