You sound pretty good (better than me), but this doesn't seem as if someone like Cynthia Phelps taught you very well. This was a good performance, though.
And no, I'm not criticizing Ms. Phelps, as I look up to her as a rolemodel.
When You play this peice feel the soul of the music, Do not rush, You control the accompianist they don't control you. The Cadenza is too short try to ease in and tell your version of the story right there, how does it feel to you, what was Telleman trying to say in that little solo. The emotion the telling of the deepest thought get lost in it. I played this peice as a 7th grader for Juries, competition and a Master Class. Keep up the good work. the Walton is not far behind
haha i was practicing that song today and was wanting to see someone play it so i can make sure iam getting everything right! your the only person on youtube with a close up solo of this song so woot! Viola's are hardcore XD
You had really good technique except for your right hand -- it was so stiff it looks like a catcher's mitt. Try to loosen it up a bit.
But for an eighth grader...Jesus...I'm a high school sophomore and I probably don't play any better than that (though I didn't even take private lesson 'til last year). Keep at it hard core.
Wow! That was beautiful! I play Viola as well and am working on the whole Concerto, but I am working on this movement currently. Your playing seems a bit stiff but beautiful vibrato. Keep it up!
I'm 27 and a vioist as well. I must say, for someone your age, you have a beautiful tone and vibrato. I agree that your shifting could be smoother. Also, I noticed that you set up a bit too early, and it made me anxious. (Please don't take my comments too harsly...I am a private teacher as well!). One last thing :o), try not to beat your whole body to the tempo. Let the piano keep the pulse!
You're going to be a great addition to the viola world! Best of Luck! ||3
Hi! Ur in 8th grade!! Wow! That makes two of us!! The way you play is so professional looking! Lol. You make it look so easy! Lol. I played the first and second movements of this song, and I really want to play the third one now!!
How I got in- I go to a music school in Minnesota called MacPhail. They hosted the master class, and I auditioned. I was accepted. There were 3 other students in the master class, all in colledge. I'm in 8th grade. I'm not sure how many others auditioned for the class, but I'd guess somewhere around six total.
did you have to compete for this masterclass, or did you pay her to come give you a masterclass? 'cause no offense or anything, but the telemann, espescially that movement, is really easy and you were great and everything, but i've heard some of my highschool friends play it better.
Again, i don't mean to offend, i'm just trying to figure out how you got this masterclass.
This movement isn't as easy as it sounds. There are technical things that are there. He did make the cadenza easier, otherwise it's still technically challenging.
One other stylistic thing to think about in regard to vibrato, make sure to start the vibrato from the very beginning of the note, you want to do this in all classical music, I think it is more of a jazzy thing to start the vibrato late, it fits perfectly with works by say Gershwin, but as a rule, starting the vibrato from the beginning of a note is optimal. Best of luck to you!
In classical and later music then yes, vibrato began from the start of the note, but during the baroque period it was seen more as an ornament, like a trill or turn, in fact there are records of musicians being criticised for overuse of vibrato. Read up on some of Leopold Mozart's writing if you want to verify this (I'm currently writing an invesigation of perfornace trends for this concerto)
I agree with this comment. I repudiate using Telemann to teach vibrato... better Max Bruch's Hebrew Songs or other works to accomplish this. I would urge this young man to find a teacher who truly understands baroque interpretation to tackle Telemann's wonderful legacy... avoiding the stylistic travesty found on this video. I make it clear that I am not criticizing the performer but the teaching approach!
Nice job, make sure to vibrate every note, there were lots of notes that went unvibrated and as a result when you did vibrate it changed the color of the sound suddenly.
Hey...It's jimmy chen. Nice job!

In master classes, you perform BEFORE the teacher instructs you. And usually there is a time limit, so in this case, I only ran through fully once.
Looking back, I could use much improvement in this performance (my posture is horrible!).

It must've been an honor to play for cynthia. I remember watching her giving a masterclass here in san diego. she was wonderful.

Best performance of Telemann Concerto in G Major (Third Movement) I've ever heard! This musician is brilliant!
(OK, OK, it's me).
