Asp,Esp and Monadnock are the best batons I know of ,Azans are affordable copies of Asps and they are decent for the cash but not quite up there with the rest.
My oldman (ex-screw) taught me all this back when I was a kid. Taught me to take them down as fast as possible and break as many bone's as possible so they cant get back up. Main targets he taught me was wrists, knees and collar bone's. Very practicle knowledge
Great video! OJ put a lot of good info. But as a CIV sheepdog there are some things that I would be liable for that OJ as an LEO will not. That is why he is using the weak side in this situation. Or so is my guess.

i carry an asp 21 inch everyday and have for the past 2 years cant wait to turn 18. in Vermont one can carry a concealed pistol at that age. (yes I have taken a ccw course)
Excellent video! And I agree 100% about training the fundamentals. I train with professional MMA fighters, and we constantly drill the basics. There is never a point where you can move beyond the basics.
The instructor is clearly skilled and I like his explanation of footwork. Too many people teach bizarre nonsense that is dangerous. Always move in a circle: you know what is in that area, you are "off-line" of the attack and it sets up the next strike. That having been said, police are constantly being taught to "wail on" suspects when it is simply not necessary. The idea that you are in a non-life-threatening situation and you are advocating breaking someone's arm?? Weak.
@kenfo0 Where did the idea come from that police should not be constantly training in "martial arts"? That it "takes too much time". Were it mandatory, you'd see far fewer "fatties" and far fewer complaints of brutality. Wailing on someone with a baton is VERY little "technique". If that's the purpose, the vid could have been a total of 4 minutes, including intros. I await all the flaming from fake conservatives and fake tough guys who think pounding on someone for jaywalking is fine...
Cops already know tons of martial arts. In Canada and the States many are taught the exact form of martial arts Fairbairn taught, called Defendu, and he was in hundreds of fights as a British police officer in Hong Kong's gang districts. He designed one of the best knives too, but the maker of it went out of business unfortunately.
@Grungadin with all due respect, we don't see this in practice, nor in this vid. The vid CLEARLY advocates "breaking an arm" over a non-lethal situation. This kind of fake macho b.s. is often seen in tasing old women and children. MEN were supposed to be policeMEN, not angry, undisciplined boys. All I am saying is there are plenty of techniques to control unruly suspects....breaking arms at the drop of a hat or calling wailing on someone a "technique" is unprofessional.
I've seen it in practice plenty of times. I don't agree with tasers in general, and I admit there are plenty of cops who shit their pants everytime they are confronted by even a kid who is aggressive, but most do know how to fight well enough. Attacking someone for no reason is always bullshit, but as soon as somebody attacks a cop the law usually states they must defend themselves, and ending a fight quickly is usually the cop's goal. They should have lassos or something.
A good example happened in my city a few years ago. Some crazy drunk chick was flailing around screaming and could have injured anyone she came near, a cop tried to arrest her and she went berserk, so he punched her once to stun her and she dropped down, then sued the department for police brutality even though the cop had stopped her from injuring herself even more, or other people on the street. By ending her rampage in one blow he really saved her from actual serious injuries.
@Grungadin You and I have more agreement than disagreement. I thank you for being civil...it is so rare. In the case you stated, were I on a jury, I'd not convict him of anything, if she was wildly out of control. A big part of the problem is an absurd society in which people have no understanding of the "real world" and are selfish, ugly people. Cops have a tough job. As long as they treat people with respect, and not like some bad movie, I am on their side. Best wishes.
@kenfo0 It depends on the level of force your subject is using. Department policies in the U.S. generally follow the force continuum (1. Officer Presence 2. Verbal Commands 3. Soft techniques 4. Hard Techniques 5. Deadly Force). If an officer needs to "wail" on a subject it's because they are acting in a violent/aggressive manner and they need to be controlled quickly and effectively before deadly force is needed. Bottom line is that there are times when strikes are warranted.
@gunsnammochannel I well understand escalation. We CONSTANTLY see police (local story) tasing 50yr women over and over, tasing children, the rodney king incident (he may well have needed a few cracks, but we all saw 5 guys wailing on a defenseless man, jerkoff that he may have been). My post is not "anti-police". It is anti-policy. Think of when the guy jumped over the WH fence in the 80's and was surrounded by SS. They had NO IDEA what to do when the guy struck a "karate" pose. TRAINING.
@kenfo0 I do agree that many American police academies lack ample defensive tactics training. However, I disagree that the use of force incidents you listed were a result of inadequate training. Officers who participate in those sort of acts are obviously acting OUT of policy, so those the issue here is not departmental policy (or lack thereof). The issue is UNAUTHORIZED use of force. I gurantee there is not one PD in the US whose general orders allow for any of the acts you just listed.
@guns you've agreed once more. the last part of your post is covered under the policy of "nah-ah", as "out of policy" events are too high to be vague HR problems. I don't recall the LAPD saying "out of policy" on the RK fiasco. the problem is "stated policy" vs. "actual policy". It's too common to be rogue behavior. I shit you not: a 50yr old lady was tasered by an officer, WHILE ANOTHER ARRIVED AND DID NOTHING, multiple times for DARING to not answer why she was walking her dog "too early".
@kenfo0 The United States has penal codes that are violated by thousands of citizens every day but that doesn't mean there is no law here because stated law is different from actual practice. You're making the assumption that most officers are "rogue" and do not follow departmental policy because of what you see on TV. The reality is that most officers go out of their way to stay within policy because they don't want to be seen by millions of people like you on the ten o'clock news.
@gunsnammochannel Your first sentence is absurd. We have laws, and they clearly do not apply to everyone equally, so yes, there is stated law and practiced law. A SUPER easy example: some states have laws on the books stating you must have a person walk in front of your car waving a red flag...see much of it? no, yet it is a law. Nowhere have I said "most cops are rogue". Why the need to make up strawmen? I have CLEARLY stated there is too little training, too much fake tough guy.
@kenfo0 Ok so let's get to your bottom line here, because I don't follow you're complaint. Is your complaint against departmental policy or against lack of training? And on what basis are you making these complaints, what you see from your armchair on the evening news? Keep in mind, actions taken by officers that are outside of stated departmental policy are indeed NOT departmental policy, so you cannot label it as such.
@gunsnammochannel My armchair? Take your childish, pedantic, unrealistic, jingoist nonsense down the road then. I made my case clearly, and even gave examples backing it up. You now take the low road with a "oh yeah, what do you know" argument. FIne. Waste someone else's time then.
Nice, but the camera during the dialog (beginning of the video) needs to be a bit steady, no need during the dialog for it to be moving all over the place. maybe a tripod?
Batons are great, I loved the one I carried while working in security.... too bad it's a felony to have one here in Kalifornia. Having a concealed gun is a misdemeanor.
Aikido and certain forms of sword dueling use similar foot work. moving off to the side opens up quite a few offensive opportunities to end the fight quickly, if your positioning is good and the your quick enough to exploit the opening. Me I'm not that fast, I'll just settle for not getting hit.
On the camera work.. when you tug in your camerahand tight to the body. and use your other hand to hold your camerahands elbow.. and turn with the body.
it should stabilize the picture.. don't know if it works during an interview though or with your tac gear on... but it is a thing you can try.
Great intro video! IF i missed it already! Could you tell everyone where you might be able to find one of the Cam lock batons? thanks ...great vids as always!
Nice footwork. As a swordsman I will spare you most of my criticism (constructive or otherwise) as most the time you will not be fighting another baton expert. I would like to know what system you would develop for fighting from a more static position? I only ask as from my experience many patrol officers/beat cops tend to be stiff legged from carrying the amount of equipment that they do. Thank you for the video, if you are ever in Canada I would love to see one of your workshops.
Great information! I do kickboxing and what your teaching can be implicated into everything I've already learned with previously. Float Lika Butterfly Sting Lika Bee!
Interesting video, althought maybe let the instructor talk a bit more without being interupted. I know you said you like to repeat things and that's fine, but don't ask him a question and then right as he starts to asnwer you interupt him.
Fundamentals win fights - wise words OJ. After 13 years Karate, I can hit a jumping back kick at a heavy bag no problem. Could I land one on a human being in a fight? Hell no. Great work guys.
part 2) She told me that opening it aggressively surprised her attacker which gave her that extra half second to prep and deliver the 1st, 2, and 3rd blows which connected with soft tissue and bony prominences. i carry a 16 inch one in a custom IWB i made. obviously i sacrifice 'firepower' for 'mobility' (by nutn) because i dress pretty formally day in and day out. so i have to rely on similarly effective, multiple blows even if its on a hand or wrist. a baton is great responsibility!
my best friend recently used her 21inch baton on an attacker B4christmas. i told her about nutn&oj's 1st vid. i told her that an attacker will naturally raise his armin defense so HIT THAT HARD too! so during her encounter she batoned attacker 4 to 5times with blows to arms, a leg, thorax and head. she later told me with a little nervous laugh that 'he' had a terrified face full of pain before he ran. she had time to pull it from her purse while within 5 feet of engagement.
@paikmendez no kidding, nothing like putting the hurt on. I have a GF I want to get her into self defense. I've learned plenty but even without it I'm not a target of choice cause of my physical appearance but she is.... I just can't get her to be mean enough to hit or kick hard. I tell her you learn to kick someone in the knee hard enough you don't even need a baton.
05:40 "tactically disengage" ... come on, just say "run away" or "retreating" like me and nutnfancy. It's more direct and straight-forward.
And don't you worry, you'll still be a tough man. Just a man with more honest ways of expressing yourself. Macho, macho men not needed in the nutnfancy project, right nutnfancy!
I really like his approach. In my first bigger fight I was totally taken aback by the speed and aggression I brought it only when I started to fear for my life and when I was all bloody already. The movies make you think about fights too idealistically. In reality you can't stop until he is down or just run away. You can't hope for a movie-like encounter. It's messy, chaotic and dirty.
And you have to drill the stance and mobility FIRST! That's what wins the fight.
Does anyone else know where I could get a good quality baton that can also close without having to slam it on the ground? I got a cheap chinese made one a long time ago more as a gag gift/toy etc. But I would like to get the real deal.

Excellent video! And I agree 100% about training the fundamentals. I train with professional MMA fighters, and we constantly drill the basics. There is never a point where you can move beyond the basics.
Slayermachete 1 year ago
The instructor is clearly skilled and I like his explanation of footwork. Too many people teach bizarre nonsense that is dangerous. Always move in a circle: you know what is in that area, you are "off-line" of the attack and it sets up the next strike. That having been said, police are constantly being taught to "wail on" suspects when it is simply not necessary. The idea that you are in a non-life-threatening situation and you are advocating breaking someone's arm?? Weak.
kenfo0 1 year ago
@kenfo0 Where did the idea come from that police should not be constantly training in "martial arts"? That it "takes too much time". Were it mandatory, you'd see far fewer "fatties" and far fewer complaints of brutality. Wailing on someone with a baton is VERY little "technique". If that's the purpose, the vid could have been a total of 4 minutes, including intros. I await all the flaming from fake conservatives and fake tough guys who think pounding on someone for jaywalking is fine...
kenfo0 1 year ago
@kenfo0
Grungadin 1 year ago
@Grungadin with all due respect, we don't see this in practice, nor in this vid. The vid CLEARLY advocates "breaking an arm" over a non-lethal situation. This kind of fake macho b.s. is often seen in tasing old women and children. MEN were supposed to be policeMEN, not angry, undisciplined boys. All I am saying is there are plenty of techniques to control unruly suspects....breaking arms at the drop of a hat or calling wailing on someone a "technique" is unprofessional.
kenfo0 1 year ago
@kenfo0
Grungadin 1 year ago
@kenfo0
Grungadin 1 year ago
@Grungadin You and I have more agreement than disagreement. I thank you for being civil...it is so rare. In the case you stated, were I on a jury, I'd not convict him of anything, if she was wildly out of control. A big part of the problem is an absurd society in which people have no understanding of the "real world" and are selfish, ugly people. Cops have a tough job. As long as they treat people with respect, and not like some bad movie, I am on their side. Best wishes.
kenfo0 1 year ago
@kenfo0 It depends on the level of force your subject is using. Department policies in the U.S. generally follow the force continuum (1. Officer Presence 2. Verbal Commands 3. Soft techniques 4. Hard Techniques 5. Deadly Force). If an officer needs to "wail" on a subject it's because they are acting in a violent/aggressive manner and they need to be controlled quickly and effectively before deadly force is needed. Bottom line is that there are times when strikes are warranted.
gunsnammochannel 1 year ago
@gunsnammochannel I well understand escalation. We CONSTANTLY see police (local story) tasing 50yr women over and over, tasing children, the rodney king incident (he may well have needed a few cracks, but we all saw 5 guys wailing on a defenseless man, jerkoff that he may have been). My post is not "anti-police". It is anti-policy. Think of when the guy jumped over the WH fence in the 80's and was surrounded by SS. They had NO IDEA what to do when the guy struck a "karate" pose. TRAINING.
kenfo0 1 year ago
@kenfo0 I do agree that many American police academies lack ample defensive tactics training. However, I disagree that the use of force incidents you listed were a result of inadequate training. Officers who participate in those sort of acts are obviously acting OUT of policy, so those the issue here is not departmental policy (or lack thereof). The issue is UNAUTHORIZED use of force. I gurantee there is not one PD in the US whose general orders allow for any of the acts you just listed.
gunsnammochannel 1 year ago
@guns you've agreed once more. the last part of your post is covered under the policy of "nah-ah", as "out of policy" events are too high to be vague HR problems. I don't recall the LAPD saying "out of policy" on the RK fiasco. the problem is "stated policy" vs. "actual policy". It's too common to be rogue behavior. I shit you not: a 50yr old lady was tasered by an officer, WHILE ANOTHER ARRIVED AND DID NOTHING, multiple times for DARING to not answer why she was walking her dog "too early".
kenfo0 1 year ago
@kenfo0 The United States has penal codes that are violated by thousands of citizens every day but that doesn't mean there is no law here because stated law is different from actual practice. You're making the assumption that most officers are "rogue" and do not follow departmental policy because of what you see on TV. The reality is that most officers go out of their way to stay within policy because they don't want to be seen by millions of people like you on the ten o'clock news.
gunsnammochannel 1 year ago
@gunsnammochannel Your first sentence is absurd. We have laws, and they clearly do not apply to everyone equally, so yes, there is stated law and practiced law. A SUPER easy example: some states have laws on the books stating you must have a person walk in front of your car waving a red flag...see much of it? no, yet it is a law. Nowhere have I said "most cops are rogue". Why the need to make up strawmen? I have CLEARLY stated there is too little training, too much fake tough guy.
kenfo0 1 year ago
@kenfo0 Ok so let's get to your bottom line here, because I don't follow you're complaint. Is your complaint against departmental policy or against lack of training? And on what basis are you making these complaints, what you see from your armchair on the evening news? Keep in mind, actions taken by officers that are outside of stated departmental policy are indeed NOT departmental policy, so you cannot label it as such.
gunsnammochannel 1 year ago
@gunsnammochannel My armchair? Take your childish, pedantic, unrealistic, jingoist nonsense down the road then. I made my case clearly, and even gave examples backing it up. You now take the low road with a "oh yeah, what do you know" argument. FIne. Waste someone else's time then.

aikido10 1 year ago
Aikido and certain forms of sword dueling use similar foot work. moving off to the side opens up quite a few offensive opportunities to end the fight quickly, if your positioning is good and the your quick enough to exploit the opening. Me I'm not that fast, I'll just settle for not getting hit.

On the camera work.. when you tug in your camerahand tight to the body. and use your other hand to hold your camerahands elbow.. and turn with the body.
it should stabilize the picture.. don't know if it works during an interview though or with your tac gear on... but it is a thing you can try.

Thank you for the video, if you are ever in Canada I would love to see one of your workshops.

part 2) She told me that opening it aggressively surprised her attacker which gave her that extra half second to prep and deliver the 1st, 2, and 3rd blows which connected with soft tissue and bony prominences. i carry a 16 inch one in a custom IWB i made. obviously i sacrifice 'firepower' for 'mobility' (by nutn) because i dress pretty formally day in and day out. so i have to rely on similarly effective, multiple blows even if its on a hand or wrist. a baton is great responsibility!

my best friend recently used her 21inch baton on an attacker B4christmas. i told her about nutn&oj's 1st vid. i told her that an attacker will naturally raise his armin defense so HIT THAT HARD too! so during her encounter she batoned attacker 4 to 5times with blows to arms, a leg, thorax and head. she later told me with a little nervous laugh that 'he' had a terrified face full of pain before he ran. she had time to pull it from her purse while within 5 feet of engagement.
