  • who dislikes this wtf?

  • Amazing song and artist, thank you for sharing .....Peace

  • The only Issue I have with Cockburn is the fact I can't seem to get enough of him.

Wait, ya'll are also Petty fans? Then why can't we get the two masters to hit the road together?...

    One love to all!

  • ...cockburn

  • He's just in a class all of his own, Mr Cockburn

  • @PERI59 - You're quite welcome. I see you're a Petty fan, also - me too.

    Best,

    SaintFu

  • this one is beyond like..one of the best. thankyou for posting this

  • God bless you all

  • @doryble - Hey! Welcome back. Haven't seen you in a while. I hope you are well.

You're quite welcome to the postings. I am glad you are enjoying them as much as you are. People like you are why I bother.

    Best,

    SaintFu

  • @SaintFu hope the gods are blessing you

  • @doryble Hi Doryble,

Yes, definitely, they are. I dunno why - perhaps you are to blame. But I have no lack for the need for gratitude and humility. Despite my Scots-Irish blood, I have fared far better than I deserve, and far, far better than many suffer. I hope I remember my blessings as often as you do.

Be WELL, Doryble. Peace - from an American who dearly misses peace. Peace from an American who laments the last two decades deeply. I remain hopeful and vigilant for rebirth.

  • SaintFu, thank you again for your music posting and your kindness. I hope you are blessed in your life.

  • neil, joni, gord, the other gord, bruce; how come you canadians get all the good ones?....well, a lot of 'em, at least

  • Ain't it so.

  • I have to re-learn this on guitar... I keep kicking myself for forgetting

  • Days drip slowly on the page and you catch yourself pacing the cage.

  • Sunset is an angel weeping,

    Holding out a bloody sword.

No matter how I squint I cannot

Make out what it's pointing toward.

I don't remember how long ago I first heard those words. Now they won't leave me.

  • NOBODY'S BETTER THAN JIMMY BUFFET DOING THIS

  • What a beautiful , beautiful song. I've always liked Bruce from his first album. I appreciate his outspokenness on political issues but much prefer this neutral, apolitical approach to writing.

  • @JoeGancher Got to love "If I Had A Rocket Launcher".

One of my favorite turns of phrase I've heard from Bruce is definitely "she's got a mango in her garden". The very first time I ever heard Bruce, that line stopped me cold. I was doing day hikes in the White Mountains of New Hampshire with a girlfriend in the 1990s, and I heard that tune come over the radio and I said to myself, wait, what? what did he just sing? I've been hooked, since.

  • @SaintFu

What is he talking about? Is it as simple as me? Mango being a metaphor for pussy?

  • @SaintFu LOL...what song is that from, I can't say I've heard it.

My favorite lines are from Planet Of The Clowns

"This bluegreen ball in black space

    Filled with beauty even now

    Battered and abused and lovely"

  • @birdstuckinchimney Heh. It may be on others, too (you know Cockburn), but I have it on "Breakfast in New Orleans, Dinner in Timbuktu", one of my absolute favorite albums. It's cut #2, called, appropriately enough, "Mango". You should Google the lyrics. I'd post them here, but I don't wanna get banned. You'll read them, and you'll ask yourself, "wait, what? Did he just write that?" But you've already given the perfect response - you just gotta laugh and dig him.

    Peace,

    SaintFu

  • Best. Song. Ever.

  • Great bass work. Anyone know who's playing ?

  • @JoeGancher Rob Wasserman according to liner notes is playing a custom 6 string Steinberger double bass

  • Hi, SaintFu -- sorry I did not respond to your kind comment a year or two ago. I had system problems...this is still a core-drilling song. Thank you.

  • I would officially like to pose this question to Bruce;

    Mr.Cockburn,

    WILL YOU MARRY ME ?

    ;-)

  • Pacing The Cage conjures up such vivid imagery. It touches the depths of your imagination. Bruce has written some thought provoking lyrics here.

I especially like the notion of proving who you are so many times the magnetic strip is worn thin and the image of a map that will not guide you because the road leads to dark places. Simply brilliant.

  • First time I heard this,I was waiting for the ferry to to go to Deer Island to go to work, the sun was rising over the Bay of Fundy...always brings me back to the best time of my life...Thanks Bruce

  • I prefer Paper Rival's version, but this is gorgeous too. :)

  • Bruce Cockburn is one of Canada's greatest talents....we are proud of him...I have seen him in concert two or three times....found out he lives in the same city as me....Montreal

  • I have been to this link many times to listen to this song. It is sooooothing to my soul. I have been a fan of this song for a good 12-13 years now. Love it!

  • @mabehaemlyca my dad used to love this song, now that he's gone i listen to it daily, its one of my favorites well written well sung

  • @mabehaemlyca

    Yes, yes, yes, me too!

As always, it's good to hear from you.

I hope you are celebrating something this time of year. Whether you are, or not, cheers!

    Love,

    SaintFu

  • @SaintFu

    Same here dear, keep well!

  • Hey Coco,

One more thing - I sometimes troll through the favorites of people who comment to get a taste of who they are. You listen to a lot of the same stuff I do. Know that John Hiatt is a favorite of mine and that "Have a Little Faith In Me" brought some tears this morning. Thanks for that.

    Best,

    SaintFu

  • @cocochanelleke

Really a great song that I found at your channel. Thx and sweet lemons for you!

  • @TheAccelerated

SaintFu put this on YT - not me.

I had a look at your YT channel and gladly accept your invitation.

  • sweet angel on earth, sweet angel in heaven

  • Hurts my heart!!

  • great!

  • I'm new to Bruce Cockburn's work. So far this is my favorite of the YT selections. Really fine in every respect - musically and lyrically. The guitar work is also subtle and nicely voiced. I look forward to hearing more of his work. Just learned about him from an interview with him in Acoustic Guitar.

  • This IS one of Bruce's excellent songs! Check out All The Diamonds In The Worl;d.

  • If you're not inspired by this, check your pulse.

  • BC is so ever brilliant. Thanks again for posting.

  • Hi Coco,

Long time! I've missed you. And thank *you* for stopping by.

    ~SF

  • CrazySaint -

    keep well, too.

    ;)

I often miss everything and everyone - quite not enlightened, I know....

  • Hi Coco,

I was just trolling through your favorites this morning and noticed a bunch of favorites of mine. That inspired me to listen to a few of the unfamiliar ones. You've got quite an eclectic assortment of favorites to enjoy.

    Thanks!,

    SaintFu

  • Thanks dear,

feel flattered and known; still have to look up the word "eclectic" though.

    Keep well,

Best wishes from the NL, keep well,

    Coco

  • the constitution of the age...sweet

  • @ reliablebow

    .... sweet?

    Please explain.

  • Just liked the phrase...

  • A humbler and more understandable and poetic way of saying 'Zeitgeist'... perhaps?

  • @DragansAerie

Thanks for your suggestion; aber ich verstehe den Zusammenhang nicht, wirklich nicht; vonwegen Zeitgeist etc.

    Liebe Grüsse,

    Coco

  • @DragansAerie

Thanks for your suggestion, but I still don't get it - and what with Zeitgeist - da sehe ich überhaupt keinen Zusammenhang.

    But life is for learning.

    Keep well,

    Coco

  • Wow, beautiful lyrics.

  • Bruce Cockburn is a Canadian hero. He speaks of good and introspective things and is a poet with amazing guitar technique,

  • @brianl890

I'll second that, every word of it.

  • awesome

  • aphasia1972-

    Thanks. Glad you liked it.

    Best,

    SaintFu

  • Great song! Thank you for posting Bruce's music.

    Take Care,

    SaintFu

  • I like Tara Maclean sing this song.

  • I couldn't find a version by her on YT just now. Could you tell me where to look?

    Thanks.

  • only place u could hear it is the bret hart wrestling with shadow video

  • Thanks Bret, but I'm afraid I didn't get your explanation, please send me another clue.

And I certainly hope that meanwhile you help the elderly across the street,

    ..........................

before I get my magic carpet from the cleaner's ;)

  • bret harts video titled "wrestling with shadows" tara maclean sings this song during that video. One scene where he is workingout, and at the end during the credits

  • thanks, will search again.

night-night from Holland where the rain is pouring strongly now - have to walk the dogs still - a luxurious problem as opposed to war, isn't it.

  • Beautifully done!! Thanks to cocochanelleke for the share.

  • Suze!

You won't believe this, or maybe you will ;)

I was just at your channel a few days ago. I was looking at my video titled, "The 'I probably won't be Irish next time' and followed a few suggested videos related to Appalachia and got to your channel. And, today, here's a comment from you. Ha! Quirky universe we have here!

Thank you for the compliment, Suze. I love Appalachia. Given your taste in music, you may like the video referenced above.

    Peace and Love,

    SaintFu

  • Thanks for posting SaintFu,

    means a lot to me.

    Wonderful video, too.

  • Hi Coco,

    Thank you for your greeting.

I stopped by your channel. You have a simple, but beautiful, message. As it should be.

    Namaste,

    SaintFu

  • Thank you for this piece, & the gorgeous photos. I love this song...we went to see Bruce Cockburn to celebrate our 2nd anniversary--at the Orillia Opera House, ON. that goes back more than 2 decades now. He did an amazing performance--& in that setting it felt like we were honoured guests in his castles great room. I appreciate the wholesomeness of his work--& the message.

  • Penhappy101-

Thank you for your words. Every encounter with a being who "gets it" encourages me. Peace and love:

    SaintFu

  • It would be great if someone could explain what "Pacing the Cage" means ? Please write me !

  • ever been to a zoo and seen the tigers walking back and forth at the bars?...pacing the cage wanting to be free.

  • pacing the cage refers to bruce's earlier work in which one of his line's goes

"living in this prison camp world".. it refers to our human condition that our life is like living in a cage like a caged animal paces back and forth pacing the cage make sense?

  • It is a place you find yourself at various times over the path of your life. You will know it when you arrive. You are blessed you don't know it yet. But you will. Sooner or later we all do.

  • this is wonderful to hear again.i think we all relate to it AND to each other through it.

and please don't shade your own light anymore,ok? i am happy to see these pictures.they are beautiful.all the world is trying to be beautiful for us and you have opened a window on your place ON THE WORLD. thankyou! PEACE!

  • Oiginaljurisdiction:

I'm quivering that I may have met someone through kismet who actually gets it. Even if not, peace, and thank you for stopping by.

    Best,

    SaintFu

  • hi again, quivering is very good.i like your words.i once struggled to try and be 'me',then i accepted the fact that i live in the centre of the universe...infinity in all directions from my awareness.all who are aware are at the centre of infinity...QUIVERING!!WOW! thanks for getting back to me.

  • Ah Ha!

So you *do* get it. Yippeeeee!

I understand your words completely. I believe them, too.

It's nice to share the universe with you.

    Best,

  • Bruce has got to be the best lyricist ever (sorry Bob Dylan). I think this is the song they'll play at his funeral.

  • great song-one of my all time favorites- one I've loved for a number of years...it's folks like Bruce Cockburn that make me stay away from alot of mainstream music..

  • your photographic imagery makes a perfect compliment to this 'masterpiece'...Thank You!

  • Oh, thank you.

When I shot the images, I had no intention of using them in this way. I was just hoping for one nice shot out of a dozen or so as I watched the sun go down. It was only when I put these images with the music that I wished I had shot them with a tripod instead of by hand.

    Thank you for the comment.

    Best,

    SaintFu

  • wonderful-thank you

  • You are welcome.

I'm glad you liked it. I really am.

    Thank you for the comment.

    Have a great one!

    SaintFu

  • thank you for posting this beutiful peace, i love brucecock burn he is my favorite artist, his lyrics are so amazing and so true, his guitar playing is so meaningful, and i love how this song brings back such memorable moments in my life, it gives me the chills, its such a beutiful peace of music, thank you for the post.

  • Wow, what a great comment.

You've pretty much summed my feelings about Bruce Cockburn up.

...but I'd add that, when I get home after 2am and I just don't want to go to sleep, I'll leave the lights off and spin one on Bruce's albums to the very end before walking off to bed. Great stuff.

  • Such brilliance. Most people do not sit and listen to songs like this. ANd they miss a whole world of wisdome because of it. We move to fast are to quick to judge and to short to pay attention to what matters. thanks for posting this beauty.

  • Thanks for your comment. It's an honor to run into a kindred music fan this way.

    Best Regards,

    SaintFu

  • Respect for that man... i can listen to it all day long . nice voice +1 great guitar +1 nice backgrounds +1 really relaxing + 1 and thanks for posting this song +1 makes 5 STARS !

  • Such a great comment - you've made my day.

If your profile age is right, I'm impressed. To "get it" at such a young age is a good sign you'll lead a rich and useful life.

Yes, listening to Bruce Cockburn on the beach as the sun sets is a worthwhile activity. Though I'm not there anymore, I still relive the emotions with bits and bytes.

    Take care,

    SaintFu

  • actually the profile age isnt right , im 17 for 8 days now. But you've also made my day with ur comment ,so that makes two of us !

Glad to hear im not the only one who simply can enjoy moments like being around nature and having great music. Anyways , keep posting great stuff man !

    Joep

  • Thanks for this, very good stuff :D

  • Hey!

You're quite welcome. Glad you enjoy it.

    Thanks for stopping by.

    SaintFu

  • YOU SAID IT!!!!!

  • this is one of the most beautiful songs ever.

  • I remember when this came out...I had been disappointed with a lot of the stuff he released the few years before this. This was a nice melodic surprise. The lyrics are dynamite, and that guy's bass solo really makes this tune.

  • Pacing The Cage invokes such vivid imagery. That's what I like about it. It paints stirring pictures in the mind. Thanks for sharing this.

  • Hey, you're quite welcome.

I really like your page, by the way. I listen to a lot of the same music you do, apparently.

  • Thanks SaintFu! I wanted to hear some Bruce Cockburn this evening and checked YouTube to find out if anyone had posted his work. Now I can share it.

    Much appreciated.

  • NP.

So, uh, you have an *interesting* collection of favorites on your page. :)

    Take care.

  • Ya, I suppose that's for sure.

Wide range of interests....if you were analysing the list.

I live in SoCal, my fiance and I hunt in &out of the water, and I just finished several books about Africa.

Mom of 3 grown kids, surgical nurse for 29 years.

    Typical, probably.

  • Ahaha.

My analysis didn't get me that far. :)

Nurses are tough, and to be admired, in every way.

    You're an achiever.

  • Thank You! It is a very stressful job, but I love my work.

Oh, and I mis-spoke; I meant I just finished reading a series of books (meaning I've been studying the history of the European-colonial-era of Africa.) I didn't mean to sound like an author. Ooops.

    Anyway, I appreciate the sentiment.

    Have a Merry Christmas :)

  • Oh, that's too funny. I was just wondering, "maybe she meant *read* several books...". Ha.

Merry Christmas to you, too. Take care, and thanks for the comments.

  • You sound very kind. Thank you. Tonight I needed some thoughtful soul music, it worked very well.

  • Poignantly beautiful.

  • This song really is just so good..

  • It's good to hear from a like mind. Yes, this song is something else. I've interpreted it perhaps a dozen different ways and marveled at how good it is in each context.

    Regards...

  • ...what I would also like to find is "Wonderin' Where the Lions Are" sung by Bruce Cockburn -- anyone able to post that? Thanks and happy T-giving.

  • Sure. It's on this channel with the red shoe.

  • Wonderful, if I didn't already tell you!

  • Woke up this morning (day before Thanksgiving) with this song in my head -- how splendid to find it here!

  • This song is not a good one for Thanksgiving. Go with the red sneaker; it never lets you down.

A happy Thanksgiving to you. If you're on your own this weekend, let me know, I'll think of something. Take care.

  • Thank you -- it was fine...Just melancholy in my old age LOL...

  • You are welcome.

No worries. Sometimes I prefer to feel that way. If you don't, though, change the channel. This music is great when you've got a fully-stoked fire, but it can be a challenge when you feel a draft. Take care.
