My grandma and her brother used to run a speak easy in St. Louis. When she used to sing us the old songs they used to play this and give me a pig foot was one of em. So i searched and her it is. Wow, always wondered who sang this.
This is a shame -Bessie Smith for Heavens sake and only one person comments in 8 months. This You Tube is like an updated Library of Alexandria with treasures of the ages. I didn't even know I could hear a recording of Bessie without haunting the antique stores for 78's or musical specialty stores in NYC AND getting lucky. This is 84 years old! Thanks RagtimeDorianHenry for uploading.
@TamarZucker . . . hmmm, perhaps. But, at the same time I wonder what comment can really be said at all that The Empress of the Blues says for her own self when each and any phonograph record brings Her right back to us, as alive - if only for that moment . . . Especially when it's a clean copy of a song we may have never heard from her before . . .
Check out, "I'm Wild About That Thing" from 1929 . ..
Priceless, pure and sweet - but, brace yourself. youtube.com/watch?v=b0TDNR3NEY0
@TamarZucker Whoa. Easy, there. Some of us are introverted. That doesn't mean we don't love Bessie and her music. I'm pretty fond of Memphis MInnie, too. But, I don't have a lot of time to spend listening. So, I go for what I know and already love. That would be Jameson and Muddy Waters. Others when I can, like tonight, and here I am listening to Bessie. And happy to do so.
I can relate to this song. So beautifully haunting yet true. You know it's a classic when the lyrics are still relevant in 2011.
