i had almost forgoten how my mother used to sing this to me as a younger child when i couldnt sleep i found my self humming this at school this week when i was feeling down and didt even realize what it was i love this tune
Thank you very much....it is not my song...it is an old traditional song. I am glad you like it. It is a murder ballad....the melody sounds sweet but the lyrics are quite heavy....:)
I've been trying to find out the name of this song for many years now since I was very little and hear a portion of it in the movie Raising Arizona. Thank you for posting it and sharing your talent with us all :)
I have a soft spot for murder ballads. Is that weird of me? Ha. I haven't heard this one before. Thanks for singing it so beautifully, Shirley. All my best.
Merci merci merci monkeylessJohn! A lovely compliment. I'm afraid I can't take credit for the style....its a genre thing. And, perhaps the voice lends itself to this genre. Thank you again for the encouraging comment.
Thank you raymondcrooke....for your lovely compliment and for the musicology informative comment on other mysterious murder ballads. I enjoyed your discussion with John!
You have one of the best voices on YT and you really know your way around that guitar! Have loved everything you've posted and hope you'll do lots more! 5/5
You make any song sound good! I remember Lost Hills did an old traditional murder song which was far more graphic. The last verse had something to do with cutting off the woman's head and kicking it across the room. I thought, "Jeez, is this what the hit parade was like back in the 1800's?"
John, that sounds like "Lord Thomas and Fair Ellender (Child 73)" - "He cut off the head of his bonny brown bride / And kicked it across the room." This is after his bride stabs the woman he really loves and before he runs a sword through his own breast. It's not the last verse though - that's reserved for the burial arrangements.
Wow! That sounds like a killer of a song for sure. I was curious though, and checked into the Lost Hills song, and found it. It was called Matty Groves, if I'm not mistaken.
You're right. I just had another listen to his version. I sing two versions of Matty Groves/Little Musgrave and neither has this verse. It seems to be one of those stock verses that travel between ballads - like the flowers growing from the graves that so many end with.
Could be....so many of those old murder ballads have similarities....and the body is usually thrown in the river....and the lyrics are quite detailed. Great melodies though! ha ha
We used to sing Tom Dooley (how we pronounced it up here in Canada) in school...so yes I have heard it. I have a book where it is called Tom Dula, true story the Statesville North Carolina, he murdered Laura Foster Apr 30th 1868 and was hung 2:17pm May 1st 1868. Trials were short back then. Another woman was involved, Ann Melton who may have had a hand in the stabbing. Story is kind of grim.
That was awesome!

Maybe back then they thought it was such a great line, everybody wanted to use it. I guess it would get the listener's attention.

Love a good ballad even when it is about a murder. LOL I always loved the ballad "Tom Duhley" by the Kingston Trio, have you heard it?
Wonderful job.
