I can't comment on the closeness of the pass, cameras are often misleading (although this does seem a tad close), however it's hardly pointless... it's quite obvious why he chose to remain in the left lane while passing.
Not only is there a car in the right lane travelling slower than him, but he is about to move into a turning lane to the left.
meh, i'd pass a car with similar distance, i'd pass a motorcyclist with similar distance... you're on the road and so you have to be able to hack the road...
As I have said on other videos with cyclists having a gripe, i grew up in the countryside where meeting tractors in country lanes or on main roads was a common occurrence, therefore learning the width of my vehicle was pretty quick. There is also a law I believe in which tractors must pull over and let motorists pass if they are holding up a queue of about 8 cars... whereas cyclists tend to make it harder for cars to overtake!!
That's nothing, I was cycling once and an overtaking 70mph car came flying towards me! Lucky I was far close enough to the edge of the road to let it through
Has any cyclist failed to notice that there is no gap in-front of a cyclist that is too short for some idiot driver not to overtake in order to get in-front?
Certainly this is true in the home counties / Greater London. I just hope it isn't true elsewhere.
Recent limited experience in Normandy, would suggest that this stupidity isn't universal.
@magnatom A normal cyclist, about a foot. A cyclist who screams at people, confronts them with verbal abuse and reads their license plates out loud while pointing to his camera, saying, 'THAT'S A CAMERA!!!!', and has only managed to make drivers hate cyclists even more... a safe distance would be zero. hahaha
Ask yourself, where would his bike or body end up should he come off (oil, ice or pothole for example)? There are reasons the HC stipulates a cars width and this has happened quite a few times...
...although I would prefer it to be like in the States and parts of the EU with a definate measurement, eg 1.5m distance rather than being so generic.
Hi I'm currently living and working in Melbourne Australia and thinking of getting a helmet cam. What camera are you using at the moment? I have been looking at Oregon Scientific The ATC3K Waterproof Action Camera with a 4 GB SDHC card and 4 high performance lithium batteries, two mounting kits, and a cold weather sleeve! For $170 Au or £85 UK. ANd then hope fully I will start posting some scary video of Ozzy driving.
I use a dogcamsport HQ1 camera with an Archos 405 solid state recorder. For the money the ATC3K is good. However, it isn't great in low light and has poor sound quality.
My interpretation (and that of institutions) of a professional driver is of an individual that receives payment for that service and is a career choice, if your career depends on driving I would expect a higher standard to be exhibited, often the reverse is the case.
We are NOT ALL PROFESSIONAL DRIVERS, in the same way we are not all professional footballers.
Yea I agree, although it was just a joke, and not against you.
In this case then, it still doesn't mean that that person is a better driver than anyone else.
Driving should be more of a privilege, and not considered a right... but not so much of a privilege that it's only in reach of the wealthy. If car drivers treated it as a privilege then maybe they would act better (maybe this could be applied to cyclists too...)
It isn't contempt for cyclists, just contempt for those who complain a lot!

Magnatom,
When I see a potential problem in my mirror, I start to wobble deliberately. I find it often encourages wiiddeee overtaking.
I picked up this hint from Ian Walker (Department of Psychology, University of Bath).
bamboobadger. blogspot. com
Hint:
search for overtaking
Dr Walker has some interesting things to say about helmets too, probably not what one might expect.
Hope this is useful

What would you consider a safe distance to leave a cyclist when overtaking?
magnatom 2 years ago
@magnatom trust me, taxi drivers are the worst.
MattySP34Ks 1 year ago
@magnatom : 2 inches is safe for my driving skills. However, not everyone in the world has my abilities, so yes, this guy was a bit too close.

I agree.
I don't class taxi drivers as professional drivers either.
I could go and drive for a Taxi firm now.
That doesn't make me a professional driver.
I couldn't go and drive a bus now, I need training and a test.
Oh wait, I had training and a test to drive a car...
WE ARE ALL PROFESSIONAL DRIVERS.
