I saw this lot at the Sussex Sports Centre in Brighton maybe a year or so before this film, and also went to school with Nigel Trubridge / Horatio Hornblower, the sax player (who had his own trad jazz band at school). They were great then, and Darts were also excellent. and look at the young Janet Street Porter introducing them.
I've got a nice CD on Chiswick via Ace that came out in 1993 - the booklet gives a nice breakdown on personnel (who played what and when, plus who went on to the Replays or Darts)
i am a old guy now...55 yeass old!!!i leave in Italy, but rock sharp and the razors were the band of my best years of my life in london no money but a lot of fun and fantastic friends..i was at their last concert in a london pub..thanks rocky
Respect. Rocky was brilliant. I last saw Rocky & the Replays live over 25 years ago years ago at the old Three Rabbits in Manor Park, East London. He made some smashing records.
I would like to have that drum kit now. A Gretsch USA kit 1970s vintage would fetch a small fortune.Oh well thats life really enjoyed seeing that video its the first time I have seen it.BUBBLES.
When it comes to Rock n roll I always think the Americans are better. But with these 50's tribute groups I have to make an exception. Rocky Sharpe and The Razors were miles better than Sha Na Na. Sha Na Na came to England in 1970 and played at my college (Leicester) and they were great.
But I saw Rocky many many times in the late 70's and they had them beat; better songs, better singers, better arrangements. The reason? Sha Na Na were great but a parody. The Razors just loved the music.
Sha Na Na definitely had an influence in the creation of Rocky Sharpe & the Razors performance. And of course many 50's doowop groups added significantly to the creation. Sha Na Na however performed in the USA where audiences were much more familiar with the music. The Razors were importing it to the UK and certainly had their own twist on performing given the big characters in the band.
And here they all are: Rocky, Big Den, Johnny Stud, Griff Fender, Slick (who became Rita Ray in Darts), Rhino on guitar, Horatio on horn, Barmy Baz on piano, Machine Gun Max on stand up bass and of course Bubbles on the drums.
This is GREAT to see. I was MAD on both Darts and the Replays but didnt know they were 'as one' in the beginning. I saw Darts live in 1978,...... what a thrill! :D
