I can tell you this much: the explosions were the tires popping due to the heat from the fire and both the car that hit the truck, both of which were southbound, and another one going northbound were involved. The bridge itself was projected to re-open at 6AM the next morning but was re-opened at 4:30AM to all traffic. The truck driver was killed in the mess. Also take a look at the barrier wall to the left of the fire. I'll explain more in another posting.
Yes I was in this accident. I almost died this day. My "friend" at the time was driving the car. No seatbelt in the back seat. I was riding the roof of the car after it flipped. I thought we were going to fly off the bridge. Gasoline leaked immediately under the flipped car. but what felt like a lifetime was only 25 min? I wish I could have helped that man. After the hit there was nothing anyone could have done to have helped him.
@MrPelhambay i don't think of it, much... thanks tho :)
actually went back the next morning... to buy the same exact dress that had gotten incinerated in the accident.. lol, that and everything else I had just bought from the Palisades Mall... I thought they cleaned up pretty well, for the mess that was there the day before. All that was left was a beautiful black smudge
I find it very disrespectful that people find my fathers death amusing my father died in that truck because of a stupid reckless teenager take this shit off
The kids alerted the parents to the accident. We are located 600ft higher and a mile away from the accident, so all the kids could see was the smoke from the fire. That is why the kids had so many questions and had no idea how bad the situation turned out to be. Trust me they are not scarred. It's called reality. Maybe you should think before making stupid comments.
@dmsheran are you stupid ? ok the kids saw the fire and alerted the people but its shocking for a young kid ! it can be a shock for the hole life... you dont know kids if you dont know that
@xDuffman3000x terrible?? what is terrible???? you must be from a third world country and stole a comp or laptop and just got hooked on to the media... considering after 9/11 every tv was showing even worse stuff.. people jumping from the towers.. building burning.. and you call this mother "stupid" as if you are intelligent. ...
@xDuffman3000x No shit what parent doesn't teach their kids reality is a moron, they grow up getting everything and BAM one fucking day the realize how harsh reality is, best to tell them now.
@xDuffman3000x its knobs like you who make the worst parents today. quit trying to shelter and protect your kids from reality. they'll only grow up to be weak, thin-skinned, soulless DOORMATS, never knowing how to deal with the harsh and brutal realities of life. life is tough, let kids learn that. in fact, as far as people like you are concerened, DONT BREED!
wasnt this the tanker fire that shut down the bridge?...if it was then damn....i was stuck on the school bus from three pm to 11pm (had to go around through bear mt., traffic was non moving...and i was stuck with the most annoying kids you could fin d...i took the next school day off (was heading to tarrytown from rockland by the way)
you're thinking of a different accident. That one happened like 2 years earlier. This is the one that shut the bridge down on a Sunday night for about 10 hours. I was stuck in westchester until 11pm. Was approaching the bridge from tarrytown when we saw the smoke and everyone stopped. was already past the last exit 2 lanes over and couldn't get out.

Three lessons here: 1) New Yorkers are really hard to listen to. 2) New Yorkers teach their kids the value of rubbernecking at tragedy really well. Remember, don't help, don't ask questions, just video tape it. There might be money in store. 3) New Yorkers have horrible voices.
How do you arrive at these conclusions when this video was shot from about a mile away. You do understand that video cameras have a zoom feature or maybe you don't have video cameras where you live. Rubbernecking is a term that occurs right at the scene of the accident. Most people know that. Also how do you conclude that the family made money off this tragedy? or could help more than the hundreds of people right at the scene? I conclude that you just have a problem with New Yorker's.
No I think I standby the main lesson I took which was New Yorkers accent sounds much dumber than a hick southern accent that I could have ever imagined.
I feel bad for the family that lost their Dad in this accident. I'm a Dad too, and I thank God He's protected us every time we went for a drive, even on the NYS Thruway where this happened.
Yeah... I believe this was when a car broke down and was rearended by a truck. Two people trapped. Passanger got out and jumped into the river. He was rescued by a contractor working on the bridge and was taken to Westchester medical center by STATFlight med-evac copters. The driver was trapped and burnt. The responding fire departments were Central Nyack, Nyack, & I believe Tarrytown. Piermont might have also responded. EMS was from Nyack Community Ambulance and Rockland Paramedic Service.
No your recollection of this accident is not accurate. The driver of the watermelon truck was rear-ended by a teenager weaving in and out of traffic causing the truck to jack-knife through the center divider. It was very windy that day. The truck caught fire with the driver trapped inside. No passengers or anyone else jumped into the river. Unfortunately the driver died in the fire.
i remember this day perfectly. i wuz about 5 to 7 cars away from this accident. i wuz talking 2 my dad an then out of nowhere a flaming fireball flies across the road slamming into the guardrail. and then booom. A huge explosion. poor driver, may he rest in peace. i believe it wuz a truck carrying watermelon. ill never 4get that day. thank god it wuznt a oil tanker cause i would have been blown away along with other cars. mn, wut a great way 2 kick off the summer.(sarcasm) it wuz a scaRy day.
I had a classmate from HS who along with her parents, was killed after they got rear ended by a tractor trailer. Their car had broken down and they were off in the shoulder lane...happened Labor Day 2006.
If that object burning under the bridge is a part of the truck, then it was an explosion, but if it is a boat then I must say that there may have been some kind of showdown between the truck and the boat and the end result is this. Almost like an action movie!
That is amazing. It is really sad that people over the internet seem to have such a brilliant view on how to raise children and are so well acquainted with the couple that managed to capture this event that they feel compelled to criticize the way they handle their children. Seeing the magnitude of the explosion, I would see how it would be essential for a news report before filling their children's minds with speculation. Thank you folks for posting this.
Amazing footage of a sad event. As for the children comments .... they have no idea how to raise children obviously. Children need to see reality and have it carefully explained. The world is roses and mistakes can have tragic consequences. Good on you showing your children!! They will probably grow into sensible drivers.
Oh my god, I was coming back from Westchester that night at like 8 or so and the bridge was STILL closed both ways. I remember this very well because I was sitting in traffic for literally like 3 hours. I ended up having to turn around and luckily I knew someone in Westchester. So, I had an impromptu sleepover, one of the worst nights I can remember.
Since you asked, it was my kids that initially saw the smoke from the accident or I would never have been able to film the video. Keep in mind the video was taken from over a mile away at an elevation of 600ft so it's not like my kids could see anything that could be described as tragic or disturbing from their vantage point.
omg i hate going over that bridge! there is something wrong wiht it, it's like ready to collaps and the town JUST started doing something about it!!! omg his is horrible, there have been many accidents on this bridge my sisters friends dad was hit, he flipped over and feel in tot he water in his truck he survived luckly

Oh damn, I remember this bridge! I drove it from my way from Rhode Island! I saw the houses on the hill (like this one) and man, I can't believe that! Accidents on bridges are scary like hell! But I mean, stuff happens, there's no way around it. Man, this stuff is just sad....
This is on the Tappan Zee Bridge on the Hudson River between New Jersey and New York. As the description says, it's about 20 miles north of New York City.
Where was this at? thats a long bridge. And thanks for the upload without all the editing. I like RAW home videos of stuff. not edited with movie maker or what not.
i highly doubt anybody that witnessed the fire that day gives two shits about what siren is blaring especially when theyre watching a tanker burn on a bridge
I provided a copy of the video to the local media and fire dept. related personel for training purposes. I never thought of profiting from the video knowing that a family lost a husband and father in this horrific accident.
the accident you see and the man who died was a co-worker and a friend of mine Ricardo Rivera he was married with 3 children....my company would like a copy of this video since this is much clearer than the bridge camera's
Sad to hear about the driver, but you did an awesome job taking the video. What kind of camcorder did you use, since it seems to have a sharp zoom feature???
My wife was on the camera (Sony HDD) and I had a pair of high power binocoulars. We are 500' up and about 3/4 mile away from the scene. I was very impressed with the respones time of the police/fire/rescue as well as the organization of the clean-up crew that had the bridge open by Monday morning. Very sad that somebody had to lose their life. My sympathies to the family of the truck driver.
A scary inferno that was tough to watch for anyone who drives or knows this bridge. By the way, liked hearing the yound children's voices in background and see this scary site though their eyes.
Tappan zee bridge accident on July 1st 2007 about 7:20pm. Involving a tractor trailer carrying watermelons. The driver of the tractor trailor died in the accident. Bridge was closed for 6+ hours for hours on Sunday evening.

Thats my guess at the least. I've seen it happen enough times at car fires!

I provided a copy of the video to the local media and fire dept. related personel for training purposes. I never thought of profiting from the video knowing that a family lost a husband and father in this horrific accident.
