  • 21 years later and this is still my favorite song. The opening guitar motif makes my knees weak.

  • very xtc ????

  • I never got into Sugar, never really listened to Husker Du, and Black Sheets of Rain was too thick. But Workbook, and especially this song, are some of the most perfect music ever made.

  • I love to hear all these great comments becoz i think bob was unique and this was 1 of my fav tracks!

  • I was in a mental institution when this song came out. I freaked out on it!

  • One of my favourite songs of all time! Thanks for posting!

  • "Workbook" is the album I wish I'd made. "See a little light" is the song I wished I'd lived.

  • @trublgrl What did you do instead?

  • HUSKER DU !!!! infelizmente depois disso veio a merda do grunge !!!!!!!!!!!

  • Love this song

  • This was a kick ass album. I remember when it came out that many of his Husker Du fans were not digging it but I thought he really outdid himself on 'Workbook'. I don't recall a bad track on the entire disc. Now I need to go dig it out of my college stash. Good music from a simpler time.

  • I know you will.

  • Bob Mould is a genius:! Great composer! Long live B. M and his awesomwe music (also Husker Du too, one of the best bands ever!)

  • MEMORIES!!! minneapolis, first ave.... whoa

  • Still one of the greatest Songs from Bob...It reminds me of really good times! Bob rock on (maybe sometimes with Grant and Greg, that's what i dream about)..Greatings to every Hüsker-Fan

  • I seen this guy twice in concert, great times!

  • I remember when this vid made various rounds on MTV ( when they played music).

It is nice to hear this song and remembering some fun times.

  • Go buy it, hell! I've had this record for twenty years!

  • @poughkeepsiejohn1. I'm going to guess that comment was put in the description only to attempt to placate those who would remove it from youtube altogether. It seems to hve worked. It's been almost 3 years now.

  • god.............

  • genius. Enough Said. It's so sad that he's unappreciated since he's "alternative rock"'s Pete Townshend.

  • This was back in '89 when Bob was known as "That dude from Husker Du".

  • oh bob.

  • god

  • great song.

  • I work at this dull, suburban shit-box called a mall. They play this over the DMX outside sometimes. They have no idea!

  • I'd be gay for Bob!

  • workbook is a wonderful album. he was without husker du, his band, no longer had his lover. in tons of personal pain. and out of that came these beautiful songs.

  • If Towwnsend is ever imprisioned for child porm. Mould would fit in. He writes beautiful lyrics and to my knowledge he sticks to adults.

  • "Frank Black owns alternative rock." Really, and so what? Ever heard of the Feelies, genius? Besides, who the hell cares one toss about "alternative rock" which is a pussy marketing term. What we are talking about is modern rock and The Feelies are the kings.

  • Bob Mould music has held my hand through some tough times growing up, all of his stuff, give the man a medal

  • Personally, I prefer Frank Black to Bob Mould, but I would never deny the heavy influence that Mould had on Black. Mould definitely had a better ear for pop music and how to blend it with his own style to make a great song, but from a purely creativity standpoint, Black definitely lived "outside the box" more, and thus ended up having a heavier influence on other musicians. Black basically owns alternative rock as it exists today, even if Mould was one of the sparks that started the fire.

  • and any frank black or pixies or foo fighters fans...do some research...bob probably one of the most influential voices in modern american punk rock. Freaking genius

  • Modern alternative rock would not exist were it not for Bob Mould and that certain Minneapolis rock trio he played in.

  • i cannot tell you how much bob means to me emotionally...on a whim I discovered him right before a social D show in OKC...well Mike Ness is cool but no comparison to Bob.....I cannot wait to see bob live again for upcoming band tour

  • It is always to Husker things up!!!

  • i know this song is about a break-up, but it always reminds me of my grandmother passing away.

"but if want me to go, you shoulda just said so. are you waiting? i don't mind ...."

  • this song came to me from the one that got away. well one of the ones. i love him still. and this song as well...

  • does anyone have "heartbreak a stranger" that you can upload?

  • This sounds different from the version on "Workbook" (which was the only version I knew, before listening to this). Always nice to hear a different recording of a song you like.

  • You're right, the mix sounds a bit more spare. Still sounds great, though. Hard to screw up such a great song.

  • I'm thinking about going to AA, and this song makes me want to cry right now.

  • Hope you're feeling better. Good luck. :)

  • good luck to you!!!

  • We're with you my friend... best wishes

  • @artrca1000 So did you ever go to AA?

  • Every track on this album is a pop masterpiece. It's my opinion that Bob's arrangements and harmony stacks on this record are right up there with Brian Wilson's finest. Also, his use of drone strings in his guitar playing predate (and predict) many others to come.

  • first time I bought an album and thought, hmmm, chello, that kinda sounds good. Just fantastic songwriting.

  • i wish bob's old band husker du would reunite

  • This album was amazing and I realized Bob had a gift.

  • workbook was one of the most underappreciated albums ever. Just awesome

  • anything with bob in is worth it.

  • at 0:22

  • its at :22

  • Just fucking awesome!

  • First saw this on 120 minutes yesterday night and I'm very happy I did.

  • Blimey! That's the problem returning to these old tracks - they emotionally trigger and evoke strong memories of the past which can make them difficult to listen to. Wonderful, wonderful stuff though...*sobs*

  • I couldn't have said it better myself.

  • that is so true...

the song was and is so beautiful

but it seams to belong to a different time and place.

hard to hear the song without a tear or two...

  • the fiddles at about 2:15 were great...i love good string music of any type!

  • I'm going to find the "Workbook" cd. I used to own the cassette, but only listened to this song. But where is the cassette? I DON'T KNOW!

  • that fucking Workbook album was simply amazing...i swear!!

  • i loved husker, i loved sugar, and i love the music of mould...this is so fucking good!!

  • Took the words right out of my mouth....

  • Does anyone remember what year this is from? I seem to vaguely recall 87 or 88?? Great power pop from a great writer performer.

  • It's from the Workbook album, which came out in spring 1989.

  • my name is lee mould. im from scotland i like the sound of bob where is he from

  • i think he lives in district columbia at the mo.

don't count me on that ^, but he used to be in an influential punk/hardcore band called husker du, they were awesome. he was a lot fatter then.

  • bob mould is from new york, then he went to minneapolis, minnesota

  • so hes not scottish awell a fot we mite be related sumhow

  • this song lead me to my 1st husband. So many memories i can still taste them.

  • WHEN oh when will someone upload "Wishing Well"? I'd love to do it but I'm a youtube dummy....: (

  • yes

  • Is this the one from the TIAA CREF commercial?

  • It sure is! I nearly fell off the couch the first time I heard it.

  • This was my wedding song! just for the fact that my wife loved it , while i was ( and still am ) a huge Husker du, Sugar, Bob Mould Fan! but everytime it's played, as far and few between as that is, I still think of thee best day of my life! 10 years To date and still with her!

  • Aw lismay, you're a sweetie, you get me all weepy....you're lucky.

I have only very bad memories from this song, but love Mould anyway- with a tinge of pain.

  • Where's the flying V? Husker Du has a spot in my all time greatest band list.

  • This is great. I love workbook, it's one of his most underrated albums. If any Mould fans dig this album esp. they should check out Richard Thompson. He HEAVILY influenced this record and I've gotta thank Bob for getting me into him. FYI. the b-side of this single was an RT cover, "shoot out the lights".

  • Yes, Minneapolis.

    So many different styles.

In high school I was all into the funk; Prince, Andre Cymone, etc.

Husker Du, Bob Mould solo, Sugar, the Replacements came in college.

Now I search for them on YouTube.

    Long live WLIR.

  • Minneapolis has such an amazing amount of musical talent (the 80s especially). I remember going to college in Iowa and driving up there for shows by Bob and Husker Du and the Replacements. And I'll admit it, Prince too. ;) Great times.

  • OH MY GOD!

I haven't thought about Bob Mould or Sugar in years! (I never really got into Husker Du for some reason, don't ask me why.) "Workbook" was one of the first albums I bought on CD and it's one of a rare few that I think I listened to around a thousand times. Where is that dang CD now? I need to hear it!

  • this song makes me feel like the star of an eighties coming of age film, and that is an awesome feeling.

  • That is actually pretty good description of the feeling of this song.

  • I know this is a billion to one shot, but back in 1989, 1990 or so there was a New Year's Eve program on KTCA (public TV in Minneapolis) and Bob Mould did an acoustic set in a garage lit by a bunch of car headlights. Does ANYONE have a copy of that video?

  • Wow - that would be something to see. I was probably drunk on the U of MN campus that night.

  • I would love to see any sort of video of Wishing Well or even Sunspots! I rank Mould right alongside Johnny Ramone as the greatest punk guitarists ever. And terribly UNDERRATED AS A SINGER AS WELL!! Great voice!! Love "Workbook" . . . Love Bob Mould!!

  • I was just thinking I need to get "Workbook" again -- and then I heard this song in a new commercial today! Still sounds great, doesn't it?

  • that song is so timeless...which makes it perfect

  • chill as shit.

  • This is such a great song and I love the video a lot. Too bad there's no color. Oh, well.

  • Workbook was a work of art indeed. The sound of silence. Great album, great year.

  • Workbook is one of the most underatted albums ever. Pure gold!

  • Workbook is still one of my all-time top 10.

  • Yep, one of the best. No doubt about it.

  • I never travel very far without a little Bob Mould.

  • this is quite a progression from zen arcade huh?

  • Work book is such a great album.

  • Did he ever do a dud song, what a great muso

  • Bob Mould has totally saved music for me over & over again. Nobody else compares to Bob. Thanks punky for this posting.

  • Bob rocks!!

  • bob mould, stan ridgway, vic bondi, bob dylan: best singer/songwriters i know of.

workbook is one of those albums that touched people's hearts.

  • Yep, but you've gotta' add Paul Westerberg to that list.
