  • I think the saddest thing about this is that it actually happened. Great movie, though! The Acting is phenomenal

  • hard to believe juliet hulme now makes a living with crime novels ... the irony

  • this is so horrible

  • I can't get over how sad this scene is. I feel so sad for the mother. She completely trusted and loved both those girls and they killed her brutally. I don't understand how anyone can kill their own mother, your mother (well at least mine) would do anything for you and their love is unconditional.

The fact that she was manipulated like that by her own daughter makes me sick.

  • when i saw this, i could not believe that was the end... what a way to go :O

  • lol

  • One of the saddest scenes in a movie ever. The look of confusion and horror on the mother's face...

  • This scene makes you realise just how atrocious and tragic murder is. It's so artistic in it's visualization, but at the same time you can see just how unbelievably shocking this would be in real life (and would've been at the time this actually happened). Peter Jackson proves that he knows how to make art from more than just elves, orcs and giant elephants.

  • soooo sad, watched this film and cried at ending. how can someone even think of such a cruel deed? :(

  • Christ all mighty! I was just searching 'humming' sounds and stumbled upon this video and was totally shocked in what I saw. Someone bludgeoning their own mother to death with such brutality.

I'm getting off this page and leaving you sickos to it. Oh my goodness!

  • @ASHBOX86 Didn't you happen to notice the first two words in the title?

  • this may be one of the best scenes in a movie ever.

  • I haven't seen the movie :( so I what to know why the woman is killed by her daughter and her girlfriend, could some one tell me...pls?

  • @GentlemanGhost1 This happened in New Zealand. The girls now live in UK somewhere. Why? Spolit brats really!! Cheers

    Vic in Tairua NZ

  • this was one of the saddest films I've ever seen

  • Most of today's film Critics often look back at Heavenly Creatures and thought that Kate Winslet should have been nominated for an Oscar for her role as Juliet, but in My opinion I think Melanie Lynskey should have been nominated for an Oscar for her role as Pauline because she brought the intense fire for the Movie and was the most powerful one than Kate Winslet and Melanie is really good at playing crazy and disturbing and Kate is too weirdly happy at times, but with a few bipolar moments.

  • Such a beautiful scene. Sad and tragic at one end, yet numbingly peaceful in its horrific beauty at the other. If life truly had a soundtrack, then I can only hope that this Chorus is what I would hear in n my final moment.

  • I have to say though as disturbing and difficult (and true to life) as this ending is...its one of the best endings to movies I have ever seen

  • Did anyone else notice the reference to 'Heavenly Creatures' in the second 'Lord of the Rings' when Gollum grabs hold of the tree trunk near the end of the film, in the same way Kate Winslett does in this clip? I think Peter Jackson is very proud of this film and so he should be. The great tragedy is that Melanie Lynskey was not given an Oscar for this performance.

  • weirdos. even if they werent dykes thats a bit extreme :/

  • That scene i cant watch when shes getting hit :/:/o god

  • I think its pretty crummy that the girl who played Pauline didn't get launched the way Kate Winslett was, when its obvious she's an equally if not more so, talented actress.

I can't help its simply because the girl's not conventionally glamorous the way Kate Winslett is.

  • @CinnabonChan It did...shes a famous actress whose been in loads of things...

  • Very difficult movie to make, for all aspiring filmakers out there this is how you start if you wanna' be making stuff like LOTR. Won't somone tell Michael Bay please and the others who seemed to get a pass?

  • It was a true story, so you can't really say it isn't realistic.

  • If you dont understand why they did this, then you obviously need to go and watch the whole film all over again.

I do not condone what they did at all. There was a very strong motive. Love was the motive, they wanted companionship, they loved one another.

This wasnt acceptable in the 1950s.

To be frank, they were failed by society. Simple as, we're a lucky today that it is

  • Those two were obviously extremely disturbed and also evil...there is no reason that they should have killed her mother cuz how was that supposed to make them be able to stay together? I have no idea what the point of that was but something in both of them obviously snapped and I am appalled that they only got 5 yrs each...

  • I can't believe those two women are free and one is even a successful author. So disgusting.

  • That wasn't so bad.

  • This last scene is so devastating. Like how any one could do that; worse to there own mother. |:

  • i think this is most disturbing scene ever done.

  • This scene is amazingly crafted

I saw this movie along time ago when i was about 10 (so that was 10 years ago) but couldn;t remember the name of the movie, but this scene was stuck in my heads for those years...

    it sitll haunts me today

Thats when you know that is was good...

  • I just saw part of this movie today (this wasn't the part I saw), but in this scene it looked to me like Juliet was having second thoughts for a minute? Maybe she didn't think they'd actually go *through* with the whole thing?

  • devastating and very disturbing...

  • woah Peter Jackson really knows how to set the mood of a scene. This scene is a stunning piece of work and the actresses are phenomenal.

  • the most shocking thing is it is a true story even more sad we are get school credits from renacting it

  • I actually live in NZ, and regularly take walks in Victoria Park...Wow though, this scene is so chilling, especially the music. Really disturbing

  • Sencillamente es una gran película; esta escena viene acompañada perfectamente por Puccini, es Puccini no? jaja. Espero que algun forista no me pendejee.

  • very moving scene, but at the same time

    shocking ,disturbing and beautiful

  • Watching this for the first time was the most nerve-wracking thing I've ever seen.

  • 'Treat yourself....... before we kill you'

  • Well that was fucking disturbing.

  • That's pretty crazy, this scene truly was painful to watch... Her mom was so happy and unaware i can't imagine how someone could ever kill their own mom.. they must've really had deep mental issues..sad that it actually happened.. Excellent acting though

  • Saddest ending ever

  • thank you for posting!

  • This is a very powerful scene. that's about all i can say. Love the strangled little noise at 0:44-0:45. Kate's a powerful actress. The scene is truly one of the most effective pieces of cinema ever commited to film.

  • The actress Sarah Pierse who played the mother so deserved an award for this scene!

  • it's 'Sarah Peirse,' don't mean to sound snarky but this is for anyone who's frustrated they can't find 'Sarah Pierse' on imdb

  • No, I understand completely!

The actress is fantastic and she truly deserves an award for this scene.

    It's a shame she didn't win anything.

She also starred in a film called "Rain".

She was excellent in that as well!

  • The murder scene is one of the most violent acts I've witnessed on screen. Just the way it's portrayed, the first unsuccessful blows, when the mother is still conscious.... that gutteral sound of moaning death is nauseating to hear and watch.

I can't feel bad for the girls because they crossed the threshold of murder. A sad true story, sad because if I remember, one woman lived on for many years and never owned up to her crime.

  • melinie lynsky i thaught was very good in this. kate winslet aswell but i think mell was a great take on the murderer coz she showed emotion and anger throught the film in a weird way

  • This has been my favorite movie ever from the first time I saw it, Peter Jackson has a knack! Kate was always meant to be a star.

  • Hi! is it possible to know the name of the movie?

    thank you very much :o)

  • Heavenly Creatures

  • Heavenly Creatures

  • If they had been around today. They could have admitted they were gay and their parents HOPEFULLY would not have split them up causing them to commit murder.

  • I love this movie... it's great

and this is may fovorite part jajaja

  • These women are insane and free. Writing books, appearing on talk shows. Is that how things are suppose to work? You bludgeon a woman to death, hitting her 45 times until her skull cracks, and then you go on writing books and doing talk shows? If there is any form of justice in this world, these girls will burn.

  • Actually Pauline Parkey (Hilary Nathan) lives like a recluse in the Orkney Isles.

  • I'm talking about the other bitch.

  • you disust me. The world isn't black and white like your pathetic little mind makes it out to be. Please go away.

  • Yeah, because killing people is okay if don't do it often or regret it.

  • what? and you're aware of the intricate workings of her own mind are you? You know that she doesn't regret it do you? The girls were mentally disturbed, they lived in a dream world. Look at the way they approach the murder.

  • The movie is not the same as the film my friend.

You can excuse it all you want but murder is no accident. They plotted to kill a woman in cold blood and then smashed her head with a brick for a half an hour to break her skull. If their fantasy worlds are THAT strong, then they SHOULD be locked up so they won't hurt anyone again. That only seems logical. That's the reason why we have institutes and prisons.

  • Correction:

*This Movie is not the same as the real WORLD. Sorry.

  • Back in the mid 90's I came upon this while "channel surfing".............right at this point! I was like "HOLY CRAP!!!!" That had to have been, for me, one of the most bone-jarring killings that I had seen since 1990's "Twin Peaks" where Leland/BOB kills Leland's niece Maddy! I did see this in it's whole a short while ago and it's a good film. BTW, the closing credits have a guy singing "You'll Never Walk Alone". Now I can never hear the Pink Floyd song "Fearless" the way I used to again!

  • Juliet looks a hell of a lot more nervous than the other, hope they both burn in hell x

  • this waz based on a true story..HOLY SHIT!!! thats fuckin creepy..and evil..how could anybody want to kill their own mother just for a relationship..

    >:( those 2 lesbian bitches need to die or shouldve dies..idk..

  • ok you didn't include the final shot ?

  • i can't decide if the attack would have been more brutal on screen with the music continueing, or with it stopped. Violence of such an obsessive and (insane)-for lack of better word-kind, can i think be made utterly disturbing by beautiful calm music. I can't draw similarities between where the chorus comes in in the opera, and where it is in this film, but i wonder how that scene would hve left its audience with the music in it.

  • good film, but that ending made my stomach turn....i dont get how anyone could kill thier mother, it's just a terrible thought all around

  • It's especially stomach churning because the audience knows what they are planning and the mother is so blissfully happy, not aware of the sinister thoughts around her. And everything becomes so painfully real the moment they hit her.

  • OK EVERYONE: This IS extremely graphic, and based on a true event BUT we must all remember that this particular scene isn't real and it's made by PETER JACKSON, one of (in my opinion) the greatest director's of all time.

  • The actual murder was a lot worse...if you read the coroner's reports...it was much more gory. Poor Honora...

  • the only thing that shakes me up about that part, is when she's on the ground with her bloody head looking up at juliet and crying like she's looking for her to help her:(

  • Wow. Havnt seen this ending b4. German (alternate) ending is better though :-D Its slightly different!

  • Not knowing the story, I wasn't prepared for this video of brutality killing of a fellow human being, especially ones own mother.

I was a carer for my disabled mother for over 43 years due to her suffering a severe stroke during major surgery for thryroid cancer.

To see this video while this beautiful music is playing, has really upset me.

I wish I had never seen it :(

  • this scene always made me feel nausea and nervousness before she was actually attacked cos i knew it was gonna happen

  • Hey bruiseviolets, I know exactly how you feel. I feel the exact same way everytime I see the ending.

  • i love everything about this movie except for the whole killing the mother thing. that is just so horrid, no matter how much you feel like doing that doing it is just too much. But if they yould have just let the girls alone i think all would have been well. Every girl has that friend in high school who you feel is like your soul sister i think thats just what it was,its so sad society could'nt accept them for the way they were. none of this would have happened.

  • no i dont think she didn't deserve that. It caught me the way juliet has horrid parents but dosnt want to kill them but its diferent from pauline even she was depressed and became anorexic still makes her selfish to do that

  • i think its upsetting and a very emotional part of the movie. Its the music that upset me aswell and when it gets quiet =( summin bad happens

  • NO! Where is the scream at the end?!? That's the most traumatizing part!

  • Poor Honora, she didn't deserve that.

  • Jesus thats a horrible way to die.... they pretty much got away with it too.

  • Comment removed

  • No they got out fairly quickly, and one went on to become a successful writer. That's getting away with it, if you ask me.

  • Comment removed

  • are you kidding they got five yrs and lived happily ever after. im not trying to judge but thats a slap in thehand for killing your mother. I guess the real punishment is living with yourself for the rest of your life

  • i feel so sorry for the mother. she seems so blissfully unaware of whats about to happen and so happy

  • i can't believe someone would do that. its a bit obvious they wouldn't get away with it =/

  • absolutely chilling. i can barely stand to watch this scene, the mother is so happy because she thinks she's patching things up with her daughter and unaware of whats about to happen.

  • I know, its horrible :(

  • This is a much superior movie to lord of the rings in my opinion

  • Best kiwi movie ever

  • Yeah those two girls spent 5 years in jail. Just 5 years....

Both are still alive and well.

  • every time i watch this scene i get very nervous x)

  • I felt like jumping into the screen to save the poor mother! :-( Poor lady. I also felt like jumping into the screen to beat the shit out of Pauline and Juliet

I hope that Pauline and Juliet have suffered and will continue to suffer for doing this evil thing! I don't care how young they were, those bitches should have gotten the death penalty. I don't see how they can live with themselves, especially Pauline.

  • i totally agree!

  • i dont think they are suffering one is a famous accomplished writer - how is that fair

  • Unfortunately that is not the case. Juliet is now called Ann Perry and is a successful writer :(

  • uaaahhh esta parte es geniaaaal

  • yeah..that scene makes me feel sick. are those girls in prison? dead? hopefully!!

  • From Wikipedia: "The trial was a sensational affair, with speculation about their possible lesbianism and insanity. The girls were convicted on August 30, 1954, and each of them spent five years in prison. They were released with the condition that they never contact each other again. To this day, they have not contacted each other. After her release from prison, Julie... went on to have a successful career as a... novelist under her new name, Anne Perry. She has been a Mormon since about 1968."

  • wow...still freaky

  • The blonde girl was moving and the dark haired girl wanted to go with her. The mother didn't allow it.

  • Charlie Harper better be careful!!! It's Rose!!

  • Me and my friends made a video response and filmed it in Victoria Park, Christchurch, New Zealand, which is where the murder actually happened. I live just by there so it was handy. Viewers may not like it, but we were just having a bit of fun, honest.

  • i live right by where this is made and ive been there heaps of times!

  • I saw this film as a kid, and the murder scene scared the hell out of me. Still makes me shiver.

  • I agree! I think its one of the most chilling murder scenes ever.

  • Well acted by the mother there.. Those screams were terrifying! Lulled into security.. Nasty buggers! Great movie tho!

  • this movie is the best.. amazing storyy.. i do to feel what those girls are feeling now.. I just love this humming scene AND the mario lanza part were they dance :D

    oxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxx

  • what do you mean whwn you say - i do to feel what those girls are feeling now. im just curous

  • most brutal killing on film, sickening

  • This is the best Kiwi movie EVVVEERRR made...

  • Totally agree...brilliant

  • Is the fact that Kate Winslet trips & grabs the branch supposed to be important in some way?

  • i was wondering that too, seem like it might have some significants like fingerprints or something

  • yea new zealand represent!!!!!

  • oh, God...

please tell me what this movie is about, even just a bit! it's magnificent!

  • It's Heavenly Creatures by Peter Jackson (1994), about the Parker Hulme murder case of 1954 (New Zealand). It was a shocking crime then, the news went all over the world. The girls had an intense friendship, parents thought them to be lesbians. When they tried to separate them, the girls murdered the mother. They went to prison for 5 years. Both girls are still alive under other names. For more information: heavenly-creatures dot com. Lots of clips on YouTube!!

  • thanks so much. i checked it out online and the way it's represented is grisly and perfect

  • You should definitely see it!One of the best movies ever made!As you can see the last scene is trully scarry!

  • How to love this beautiful Humming chorus after such an terrible episode...

What a pity they use this music here...

  • Looks so real, sad that it was a true story

  • Very chilling scene!Kate Winslet and Mélanie Lynskey were absolutely PHENOMENAL.Although i already knew the end i didn't expect such a brutality!!!

  • Strange atmosphere, great performance of the actresses! The music is strangely uncommon for this sort of scene, nothing of "horror" or "suspense" about it.

  • thats what makes it so effective, and its from Madam Butterfly, so it goes back to the girls obsession with opera. Winslet is so good in the cafe scene, almost falling apart with excitement and anticipation. Against the coldness of Pauline...yeeesch....after I saw this with my mama, she turned to me and said 'if I ever complain about you or your brother ever again, tell me to shut up'.

  • It is a chilling scene I agree. I'm a huge fan of Peter Jackson's work and saw an interview about the ending sequence. They filmed it where the murder really took place but it was quite spooky to everyone, cast and crew so they walked a few metres away and filmed it there. Still rather chilling it sends chills down my spine when I watch this. It is an interesting choice of music goiving the concept behind the humming chorus from Madame Butterfly
