  • 1:07 He actually says, "And awaken a fire of a volcano"...

  • trust me, i'm an engineer...

    (btw chanson magnifique)

  • Vittorio Matteucci of the Italian version is the best Frollo!

  • I can literally feel his frustration and despair in my bones.... For a second, one can forget that he is a xenophobic and exploitative bigot, and see him as a fundamentally good man, embittered by a life of solitude, empty ritual and chastity

  • three flames of love: victim (Quasimodo), destruction (Frollo), lust (Phoebus). and who does know, does Gringoire can - simply Love? ))

  • I don't like this 'esmeralda' i really don't ._.

  • the most beautiful voice of "Notre Dame de Paris" with Bruno Pelletier <3

  • I'm so sorry for Daniel, but... Vittorio is the best ever!!! -3 his voice is magic!! He's so passionate, so... Hot! :) the best Frollo, Vittorio Matteucci!! -3

  • **it was more normal than that if Frollo felt in love with Clopin or Phoebus lol

  • The last word should have been "femme"

  • Frollo never loved Esmeralda!!! He just desired her.

  • He seems really insane... Genius!

  • @M4en1on The italian Frollo, Vittorio Matteucci, is far better! He sounds evil. He's great.

The French one is very good too, but Vittorio is Vittorio :D (Uhm... I hope it's really Vittorio... Or maybe another name O.O)

  • @LaVally93 And the original is the original... that's the show that was suscessful enough to bring it into other languages... In my eyes this version will always be the best... best word play to.

  • @Emanouche

Of course! But, talking about the "sound", I think the French Frollo seems too good.

I mean, Vittorio sounds evil to me. And that's why I like him.

Obviously the French original version is something perfect.

    But... Are you from France?

  • @LaVally93 Sorry I did not mean to sound like I was snapping at you. ;) I'm from Geneva Switzerland, I was a fan from even before the show started (they released an album, and they where going on many TV shows) and followed the hype the show made from the beggining, so I hold the original version quite dearly and with jealousy.

  • @Emanouche

Don't worry!!! I would have done the same u.u

I thought you were French because... Your nickname sounds just French!

  • He don't LOVE her, he WANT her, I think that's the difference. I think I'll never get tired of this musical ^^

  • well... it's the only translation we got on youtube and many ppl perceive it through these words((( too bad it's wrong...but I'm also so glad I found at least at least THESE subtitles and good quality video!!!!

  • @Rosy7531 I agree. It's extremely inaccurate but it's something at least. It was obviously translated by someone who is most definately not poetic. Better than nothing, though.

  • Daniel is the best Frollo ever... the french lyrics- they are great, and then english translation really isn't the best.. People- don't read the translation of the lyrics- just listen to Daniel's amazing voice <3

  • The translation is all wrong. It's a free interpretation, not a translation.

In the song, he sings "Oh to be a priest and to love a woman", not what the guy translated. And it's the same thing on every line. Very bad job.

  • in the play he is madly in love with Esmeralda. Much more than in the book. I really like him in here, This is totally Daniel's fault.

  • Actually I think french lyrics can't be translate in english without losing sense.

I agree, it's really a massacre of the beauty of the french words.

  • Terrible Terrible translations! I am French and it does not do it justice.

  • I want to live inside that voice. I want to make blankets out of it, and my pillows, and undies. :)

  • You know, in the novel I sypathized more with Quasimodo, but Daniel Lavoie's performance really makes Frollo more sympathetic, dans mon opinion.

  • @the1andonlyJadalyn Totally agree

  • @the1andonlyJadalyn Totally agree. In the novel it's just ugly lust, bt here he loves her to the edge of madness

  • @the1andonlyJadalyn

    a mon avis

  • si beau <3

  • If you like the work of Daniel or You are fans of him I will recommend you to see the musical Le petit prince. Daniel is the main character and does a wonderful job. The scenes in Which I Appears with the prince are very nice and tender. Daniel gets your emotions. The problem is That It is in French, Without subtitles. You Can find the lyrics of the musical on Daniel Lavoie's page. Put this on youtube to see the musical Le petit prince: [LPP] Le Petit Prince - part 1 / 13 (ALYSSZ)

  • I love Daniel Lavoie! He is a great actor and a wonderful singer. I have seen many versions of Notre Dame de Paris and many actors playing Frollo and I think Daniel is the best.

  • He is so intense...

  • Daniel does an amazing job as Frollo...I feel all of his emotions as Frollo, the desire, the frustration, his lust...how many singers can do that....he did a fabulous performance.

  • The lyrics of all the songs are amazing! (in french)

  • irrésistible !!!!

  • I don't agree with the translation , it's actually kinda bad... Words in french are stronger and more beautiful. "solid as a rock" WTF. It's really more poetic than that. I think " Unwavering " is better for "inébranlable". "lay of sexualité" is rather " strengh of sexualité" , " two loves " is " two mistress" ... It's not the same meaning, in french anyway.

Anyway, the original, the first and the best. Lyrics & actors/singer.

  • Against wind and waves I was solid as rock, Straight and true as a cathedral's spire...

Well, Esmerelda's made Frollo hard as rock and straight and true as a cathedral's spire, just not necessarily in a spiritual sense. HUR HUR HUR

  • male Montserra Maballe in Musical: good voice. bad acting. a good singer. not actor

  • Great version, especially sang in French O.O sounds amazing. The Russian version is good too, but I prefer this one!

  • magnifique ! j'en ai des frissons !

  • Daniel has a perfect voice, powerful, warm, passionate, sexy which makes Frollo even more compelling

I think he does a great job,he is very expressive with his handsome face, eyes, hands, this is exactly how Frollo has to be played .He is a broken man, obsessed, crazed by feelings he had kept himself from having, desires, needs he repressed and now he doesn't know how to act, what to do with them,he can't control them and gives in so awkwardness, stiffness combined with pain and vulnerability is perfect.

  • @entity22 hes so old

  • @ntorneiro

    Thus his appeal :D

  • @master0monster wtf haha he's nastyyyy and his voice annoys me too lol

  • @ntorneiro good, less competition for him then :P

  • @ntorneiro nasty? really? how is he nasty cause he's actually quite an attractive man, especially during the time he played in this musical . Also, his voice is hands down one of the most beautiful I've ever heard(in general not only singing). Oh and *gasp* some of us appreciate more mature men so..

  • @entity22 I agree completely :)

  • Maravilhoso!

  • I saw many men in this role, but only he is a true Frollo. For me Daniel is amazing and I adore him.

  • Daniel with his hands shows the helplessness and audacity of the most magic moment of his life. He is in love. And he doesn't know what to do with it. Some people are truly shallow.

  • This song is always great, but I especially like Lavoie´s versions.

  • He sings very well and he has a beautifull voice!

  • Who is playing Frollo here? I never new they made it into a stage show. Who ever Frollo is he's very good. ^^

  • @RosesNightengales It's Daniel Lavoie.

  • Amazing dramatic talent!

  • How about a 5-some? Gringoire, esmeralda, quazi, fleur, frollo :']

  • What about Pheobus????

  • @nattybrown Cannot believe I forgot him? xD

  • at least you love a woman Frollo. if you love a man it would be far worse *,,*

  • @YTheLadyButlerY Completely agree with you ! I think the same thing everytime I listen to this song x) !

  • i was solid as a rock... i am just saying, i know it's theater but still lol XD

  • Sigh... Esmeralda could've picked anyone, why Phoebus?

Both Frollo and Quasimodo loves her so much more!!

  • @sjsj83927 and Gringoire !!!

  • @sjsj83927 Because Phoebus is soooo pretty... Frollo is a priest and Quasimodo is ugly. (But I still think Quasimodo is less ugly than the two others... Actually, he's the only one who seems love Esmeralda with a true love. Not just have sex with her...)

  • @sjsj83927 i think she would have died with either of them. simply out of jealousy frollo wouldn't have let her stay with quasimodo... yet at the same time she wouldn't last long with frollo. he is after all a priest, bound by his oath. she was damned... unfortunately.

  • @sjsj83927

Supposedly, Frollo is old and Quasimodo is ugly.. So she choose the one her age that looks good (though I'd chosen that other guy which name I suddenly forgot XD)

  • @mizyki Frollo isn't old, he's Phoebus' age. The only thing is he looks older while Phoebus is super hot. Esmeralda only picked the best looking guy without a care for what was inside any of the two who were so mad for her. But then again, she was just a naive, teenage girl.

  • @CompletlyBunned

I never read the book x'D I tried, but ended up not - I think x) but good to know I suppose? xD

  • @mizyki And Esmeralda in the book is sixteen, so Phoebus isn't exactly her age.

  • @sjsj83927 because he's a tenor.women love tenors.i'm a baritone,it sucks. :/

    (kidding its fine) :D

  • I love that man

  • I love him, but they way he keeps pulling down his shirt looks like he's hiding a boner..:)

  • It´s Daniel Lavoie.

  • @RoseBurgundy Cheers.

  • Who is the singer?

  • Daniel Lavoie

  • @milanknezevic84 Cheers.

  • I absolutely adore this song! I'm so happy I cannot imagine what is it like to love someone so much, but not being able to have him or her. Genius!

And his voice makes me shiver!

  • super!!!

  • One of my favourite songs and he performs it brilliantly. I'd have difficulty not thinking of him as Frollo as he is so in touch with the character.

  • Is it me or is the subtitles of "Oh! A priest who loves a woman" wrong?

Doesn't it mean To be "lended" and love a woman ?

  • no. pretre = priest.

    pretté and prette* = lende.

    * i don't know how to spell it

  • Well, wouldn't that sound kinda weird?

'Etre prêtre et aimer une femme' = To be a priest and to love a woman - though this would be too literal, so the translation is fine.

  • @CantNotLoveMusic

Very literally, "etre pretre et aimer une femme" is "to be a priest and love a woman"

  • simplement magnifique !!

  • aha he's totally creeping on esmeralda

  • A+ For Daniel!

  • Simply amazing!

  • what a voice!!! xxx

  • Priests historically had been married. Because of primorgenial, whereby land and other property transferred to the eldest son and not the Church, the Pope decreed priests not marry.

  • No matter how many times I watch these videos, I just can't get over his body language! It is spot on as far as I'm concerned.

  • What God has yoked together, let no pull apart. Jeremiah was under divine command to remain single & not to father children since their were desperate circumstances coming on that nation in which children would be ruthlessly slaughtered by a cruel conqueror. Jeremiah 16:1-4. In the New Testament, the apostle Paul explained the benefits of singleness, 1 Cor. 7: 1,2,8,9, 29-38; 9:5. Yes, it's best not to marry if one doesn't think they keep a commitment, and etc....

  • @kierkegaardwife Isn't he amazing? I don't understand the people who claim that he's not a good actor. Daniel's Frollo is a subtle one, everything is under the surface and then it erupts. The way he moves, the way he sings, it's full of emotion, the people who claim that he can't act must be blind.

  • Nothing wrong with a man of God to love a woman. It is unscriptural that a man minister of God is forbidden to marry.

  • Well, I guess it depends on which part of the New Testament you're in as to whether or not marriage is a good thing; though it's certainly never forbidden.

Professional clergy isn't addressed at all, scripturally, for the Christian faith--a point which I find very interesting indeed.

  • Tu as raison.

  • beautiful!

  • My father was a faithful priest, for the same reason he left. otherwise I will never born..Ohhh!!! Women!!!!!!! you are so powerful....

  • @timaliceetbouqui

It is funny how we come into being, isn't it?

In any case, are women truly powerful or are men simply susceptible to our influence?

  • It is strangely appropriate that in these private moments of reflection, his costume isn't one of a priest- I think he's taken off the outer layer?

Here, Frollo the priest is stripped away, revealing the man beneath for us, reflected in the costume change and Lavoie's superb acting and singing.

  • I don't want to start a religions discussion, but as a man and a catholic, this song makes me weep not only for Frollos internal drama, which is the greatest antagonistic force in this story, but also for all the great minds that were forced to turn to eclesiatic and dogmatic pursuits instead of the natural sciences and the advancement of the human condition. To me, that was Victor Hugo's greatest criticism of the church and organised religion, and still valid today.

  • the way his face crumples at 2:46 is.. heartbreaking

    very vulnerable acting

  • i used to think that his acting was all rubbish....now i know i was a fool...

  • God, look at him fighting against his desire... Daniel is amazing in this role.

  • I think this is te most beautiful song I've ever heard

  • the*

  • The one thing I find amusing about Daniel Lavoie is the way he never seems to know what to do with his hands, so they're either resting awkwardly at his sides, fists clenched, or gripping his forearms. It's cute! It kind of adds to the tormented yet awkward character of Frollo.

  • Totally agree :)

  • I actually and the weird hands thing is an intended gesture and a very inspired personal addition in expressing his feelings. And that makes him an extraordinary interpreter.

  • Daniel is an amazing interpreter, his body language is telling the whole story, he wants her but is fighting against himself and he is going crazy... in fact, at that point he is already mad.

  • If you watch videos of Daniel performing with his own songs and in "Le petit prince" you will notice that he has no problem with his hands and his body language is very different from what you see here, his body language as Frollo is part of the character.

  • I agree with you. Thanks for your valuable explanation of this drama.

  • me abriu o apetitepara ler O Corcunda de Notre-Dame.

    awesome music!

  • beautiful song! he seems so desperate!

i always drop a tear at the end of this song((

  • This song is awesome. Daniel is also great. I feel like the translation doesn't give it justice, though.

It's just the eyebrows that get me every time.

  • His voice is a master piece!

  • Yes, that is correct. He sings 'un verre' which is a worm. I know it sounds a bit odd. ^^

  • Actually, the word meaning worm is "ver". "Verre" means "glass". (I'm a native french ^^)

But here, he does mean worm, he talks about the way his love for the gipsy keeps eating him from inside. XD

  • Well, the lyrics are very beautiful, but I don't think the subtitles are very faithful: in a passage they say "Then you came like a worm" and that's referred to Esmeralda. Mmh, are we sure that's the right translation? I don't know very well french, but it sounds badly to me.

  • I don't think this translation is really right. I think their use is to give people who don't understand french an overview of the story and erverything.

There are also english versions of this musical, and there i think its better translated, becaus there it has to fit to the story.

  • 61Monica, I see what you are talking about. I know both languages(French and English) I conclude ," The overall translation is far to be professional".This drama and the song are so beautiful to have too many mistakes in the english lyricsm..

  • Super, Daniel!)))

    I just love those lines!!!!!!!!!!!

  • no comment DANIEL LAVOEI ALIAS FROLLO JE FAKT SUPEER!!!SALUT DANIEL..

  • Get a hold of yourself and go to confession, will YOU! LOL

Very moving, amazing performance! You feel the interior struggle

  • I have to say, I love Phoebus. Well, he had a fantasy of sleeping with a pretty girl, who wouldn't but in the end he chooses his true love.

And Patric is singing and acting wonderful!!!

  • but according to the book he doesn't love no fleur no Esmeralda just needed money of Fleur and felt passion to gipsy girl

  • yea, but the musical is not like the book, the songs say it all.

  • did u see the 20-22 songs in the 2 act?i don't remember wich one exactly, it says nothing good about Phoebus.
