There's something called "Cryptical lyrics"... I'm latin, so I understand it perfectly.
El tema, la metáfora y la percepción de la letra sobre asesinatos, santería y venganza está perfectamente descrito aquí... Así que creo que no es mala letra de ellos, sino MALA INTERPRETACIÓN DE SU PARTE.
I think that even though TMV lyrics aren't supposed to make sense, you can still derive some meaning from them. What you hear and understand in the lyrics becomes the meaning for YOU. For each person it's about something different, and the parts that you can't understand add a level of mystery that makes it all the better. I find that looking at it this way add much more depth to the lyrics than a simple, understandable meaning ever could.
And I am not talking about this song, but rather the ones that claim to have "abstract" lyrical qualities. (Eriatarka is such an example.) Even if they DO mean something as CrabJock suggested, it's far from profound and it shouldn't, in any way shape or form, have an influence on the merits of the song beyond the statement "these lyrics are nice." An arthouse film could suck balls, but if the viewer base hallucinates about "hidden meanings", that does not exempt the film from criticism.
@wmotamedi : Merry Christmas cockfag! You should ask for a brain when your mom takes you to the mall to sit on Santa's lap. You know you've run into a dickless loser on this site when someone types in ALL CAPS so people know you're REALLY MAD! I'm not saying all lyrics tell a story or have profound meaning. What I am saying is that at the very least they stimulate thought, which is good; unless you are a brainless, know it all cockwipe such as yourself. Now fuck off and die please.
@rmed30 This is the last time I'm dignifying your worthless comments with a response. Aside from very childish and horribly thought out insults, you have absolutely nothing worthwhile to say.
"I'm not saying all lyrics tell a story or have profound meaning. What I am saying is that at the very least they stimulate thought, which is good."
Yes, I agree. The thought that comes to my head is, "Oh my god, how can anyone be gullible and stupid enough to try to make sense of this horseshit." Idiot.
@rmed30 And by your retarded logic, everything is good. hahaha
Guess what moron? *Everything* stimulates thoughts. Such a self evident truth, and yet mister know it all over here couldn't conceive of the idea first, because he was too busy calling the smarter person an idiot.
You are so insignificant in my life. Goodbye, insignificant retard.
@wmotamedi : LOL. You listen to Jewel you piece of shit. Maybe you can't appreciate Mars Volta lyrics because they don't talk about making smiley face eggs, maple syrup and losing the cap to the toothpaste. Whatever, eat my ass.
@wmotamedi Hey, don't wanna start a hissy fit-fuelled youtube argument, but i've seen a few interviews where Cedric says that TMV lyrics aren't meant to be paid that much attention to; it's more how the music makes you feel and the melody of his vocals are what's important than what he's saying.
Saying these lyrics are meaningless is probably the most moronic thing I have ever heard in my breathing days. You can't justify your lack of knowing with "Well, I don't get the lyrics, and being I'm the all knowing internet guy, they must mean nothing." It's open to interpretation, and as long as it remains just that, your opinions will only be opinions. I'm not saying I understand it, just because I don't doesn't mean it's not there.
@CrabJock I could stare at a piece of shit for days and eventually, in my sleep and food deprived state, I might convince myself that there is "hidden meaning" there. No one else understands this interpretation but me. Does that make the piece of shit art, too? And what you and leomack didn't mention is what you thought these "complex metaphors" (lol) and hidden meanings were. No offence, but I doubt it's anything groundbreaking. Every attempt to dissect Deloused's "story" is laughable at best.
@wmotamedi Did a little prowling (not wikipedia mind you) and found out that this whole album is based on a Diary found by former band member Jeremy Ward. The diary was from a man struggling to find his parents. Each song on this album is about a different person in the diary. Each person, leading the man closer to his parents. Jeremy Ward identified with him. Which is why they made this concept album. In the memory of Ward.
So, I guess the lyrics do have meaning behind them.
@CrabJock Please don't take this the wrong way. I love Cedric's lyrics to pieces. But looking for meaning in them is pointless as far as I'm concerned. I guess I was wrong, and you CAN look for hidden meaning in them, but what will that solve? How does that change the merits of the music?? Protip: It doesn't. You could very well add lyrics to Moonlight Sonata and it would make virtually no difference aside from a pretty voice being added to the mix. But the meaning of the lyrics is trivial.
@wmotamedi No offense taken, trust me. Believe it or not, I've heard shit that I thought was just gibberish. The key to that is knowing it isn't about what I don't see, It's about what others DO see. If somebody finds something of meaning in a song I don't understand, I can't make them a liar. The proof that the song has meaning is that they understand it. Might not be what it's really about, but to them it is. It's their reality. And it's insulting to deny them piece of mind.
@wmotamedi : Jesus Christ there are so many dumb fucks on this planet! Lyrics can change everything about a song. They can add depth, emotional weight, a human quality, a story, meaning (hidden or otherwise). Most importantly they add another dimension to the song by provoking thought and reflection. But asking you to understand that would be like asking a turd to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. How old are you? 11? If you're 11 then I'm sorry.
@rmed30 Please, for the love of god hang yourself you obnoxious cunt. Link us to your blog or SOMETHING that explains the "story" that these lyrics tell. YOU AND EVERYONE ELSE HERE HAVE STILL FAILED TO DO THIS, AND YET YOU STILL BITCH AND MOAN THAT I AM FULL OF SHIT AND I DON'T UNDERSTAND MUSIC, ETC. lulz. Until then, you don't have a FUCKING INTELLECTUAL LEG to stand on, you insufferable, posturing hipster faggot. And no shit, lyrics can make you feel emotions. Who is to disagree with that?
@Spectre1545 No of course I do not completely understand them but if you actually think of what he is trying to say you can dig from all of that metaphor he uses the idea of the song. I think he is a fuckin Salvador Dali of the lyrics. I was just saying that he does not write things without thinking, at least that's what I think. Cheers dude.
@leomack665 I agree with Spectre. While his lyrics are utterly fascinating (Roulette Dares, for example), they represent nothing. They imbibe absolutely no meaning. Which means they are fundamentally the easiest type to come up with. Think about it. Which takes more effort and sounds better, lyrics that make a story in a compelling way where you know what the artist is talking about and relate to it, or free verse stuff that is written with whatever comes to mind first without a care for logic?
@wmotamedi well as I said to that Spectre guy, YOU may not understand them but that does not mean the lyrics don't have sense at all. And if things work the way you say, does that mean that a Lady Gaga lyric which has perfect sense and you can sing along understanding what she says is more complicated and better sounding than lyrics full of complex metaphor and hidden meanings? BY THE WAY: I`m not telling shit about lady gaga stuff is just an example, no hating for you either.
@wmotamedi This whole album is based around a story, it kinda does make sense. Basically, Ward found a journal and, put shortly as I understand it, it said his mother was raped by someone in the church and he's the product of that rape. But I will say that from Roulette Dares all I got was the shipment of lobsters is running late, they can still be fluent in gibberish and there are things I'll never get.
@wmotamedi Haha I've been saying that for years. But honestly, knowing the idea behind Frances the Mute clarified a lot of the lyrics. Even without a story it's great music, I just get what's being said better.
@GeeJocUrGOLD Amen to that, bro. And hell, every once and a while I stumble upon TMV instrumental pieces that illustrate a tangible story better than the lyrics ever could. (In This Apparatus, you can hear Cerpin's heart pounding at the end, then he jumps and the sound manipulation simulates the wind as he's falling, THEN as the drummer hits the cymbal he hits the ground. Which sets the listener up for the following song: Televators.
Guess I should state what I meant before I get any more replies. I meant that the lyrics are abstract and that in English or Spanish they make no logical sense. I'm not saying that they don't write deep lyrics.
are these guys mexican or is this portuguese im Choctaw but alot of my couins is with mexicans and i know spanish but some of they lyrics i dont understand
@ooNATIVEoo I think they're Puerto Rican and i'm pretty sure this song's in Spanish, but this band is known to have lyrics that are really hard to understand or make no sense at all, so they probably will be hard to figure out even if you were fluent in Spanish! Awesome music though right? :)
Look- people are saying things about latino pride because there's not many major bands that have Spanish lyrics right now.
What if you were black back in the day when Jackie Robinson was the first black man to play baseball and he turned out to be awesome? You would probably feel some pride.
@asdfgmaster Kinda. Nirvana and TMV have the same kind of thing with their lyrics; the more you listen, the more little parts start to make sense. They usually do make sense... Heh, you just sometimes have to REALLY want to see it. ;)
Hey, I uploaded a cover of this yesterday. If you could come check out. I'm playing along to the song. I play a little over 10 minutes of the song. I'm twelve years old. I also have other covers of songs by The Mars Volta like Roulette Dares. I'm gonna upload other covers of Dream Theater and King Crimson soon.
@214Aquaman214 the spanish lyrics makes no sense at all and sometimes they sound like translated with google... like for example "mi duermo terminado", if you translate word by word my sleep is over u'll get that but is wrong...
@sarduspater01 The spanish lyrics make complete sense, using google translate word by word will mix it up. I found pronoun placement to be kind of confusing but if you want I can translate. They lyrics for this song are very dark, which is to be expected from TMV. Mi duermo terminado = My sleep ended, duermo i believe is like the noun version of dormirse which is to sleep(reflexive) you weren't too far off.
@Juturn4 no...what I said is that sounds like something translated with google or something similar... I heard an interview in spanish and he speaks perfectly so I don't know why the lyrics are like this...
Best description I ever heard of Mars Volta was : In the certain madness there is genius. Couldn't agree more when listening to songs like this and Eriatarka, all disjointed like a mind in ruin but beautiful to listen to.
@P30STMFH Actually, there is a long part in the intro that's about 1-3 minutes long, and some at the end, too, though that partis people talking... I think. Plus, the piano gets cut out at the end. But yeah, it's still an awesome song.
Solo tengo Una hora Y me duermo Terminado Por veinte y cinco Años pasaron Siguen los cuerpos Aqui temblando Tome la sangre Comi el cuerpo Mis lagrimas Quiebra el espejo
@sanguivan: Juan is Mexican, Cedric is a halfie, part Mexican and German. So 1.5 Mexicans LOL.
Also to continue my conversation from the last post, remember that The Mars Volta are influenced by many genres of music, including metal, a predominately Anglo influenced sound. How righteous would I be to exclaim "White pride"? After all, they used to have Jeremy Ward.
Dude, anybody can have pride in anything, whether or not its legitimate or just a circle jerk depends on the context.
@RHCPfan: There's nothing wrong with cultural pride, obviously. But you have to separate cultural pride from excessiveness. Technically there (was) 2 black members in the band, first Jon and Ikey, then Ikey and Thomas. I'm black, so according to you I could type a comment exclaiming "Black Pride!"....but admit it, that sounds kinda dumb, doesn't it?
If anything, "multi-cultural pride!" should be the phrase of the day. And I like Juan's Mexican flag, almost as much as Jon's Haitian flag.
@drmmer123 ,................u r right only one is Mexican and I'm proud of that because he comes from Chiapas, a state in social conflict with the corrupt government of my country
I mean, there's having pride in your ethnicity and culture, and then there's wearing it on your sleeve and shoving it down people's throats. Seriously, who listens to a Mars Volta song and their first reaction is "Latino Pride"? I'm a sociologist, anyone who cares to address this in a rational and reasonable way is more than welcome.
@pibethekid lol at the "im a sociologist" i bet your still in college because that sounds like something someone that took a sociology class would say
@pibethekid How in any way does this song shove "Latino Pride" down an individual's throats? Regardless, there is nothing wrong with cultural pride. As a "sociologist" you should know that it can create a sense of unity and self identity. Just because a hispanic band creates songs with spanish lyrics and occasionally reveals a Mexican flag when playing live does not mean that they are claiming their culture is the most superior. They are just influenced by their ethnic origins. Grow up.
I mean, there's having pride in your ethnicity and culture, and then there's wearing it on your sleeve and shoving it down people's throats. Seriously, who listens to a Mars Volta song and their first reaction is "Latino Pride"? Is that really healthy behavior? I'm a sociologist, anyone who cares to address this in a rational and reasonable way is more than welcome.
Latino pride? I'd say "black pride" after listening to Mos Def, but I have a quiet confidence about my identity. Just saying. (I love the bilingual lyrics, by the way)

I'm gonna upload other covers of Dream Theater and King Crimson soon.

octahedron is an amazing album.
i didnt know that it was their take on acoustic pop albums.
its actually less successful than the previous 3 albums.
the only 2 acoustic songs are since we ve been wrong and twilight as my guide.
seems like luciforms is the closest to a 4/4/ song.
the verse is 3/4
the chorus is 4/4
the outro is 3/4

@214Aquaman214 the spanish lyrics makes no sense at all and sometimes they sound like translated with google... like for example "mi duermo terminado", if you translate word by word my sleep is over u'll get that but is wrong...
sarduspater01 10 months ago
@sarduspater01 The spanish lyrics make complete sense, using google translate word by word will mix it up. I found pronoun placement to be kind of confusing but if you want I can translate. They lyrics for this song are very dark, which is to be expected from TMV. Mi duermo terminado = My sleep ended, duermo i believe is like the noun version of dormirse which is to sleep(reflexive) you weren't too far off.
Juturn4 10 months ago
@Juturn4 hablo perfectamente español y "mi duermo terminado" no tiene sentido...
sarduspater01 10 months ago 4
@sarduspater01 ah i completely misunderstood, thought you were using google translate. i wonder how omar didn't catch this he seems to be fluent.
Juturn4 10 months ago
@Juturn4 no...what I said is that sounds like something translated with google or something similar... I heard an interview in spanish and he speaks perfectly so I don't know why the lyrics are like this...
sarduspater01 10 months ago

@sanguivan: Juan is Mexican, Cedric is a halfie, part Mexican and German. So 1.5 Mexicans LOL.
Also to continue my conversation from the last post, remember that The Mars Volta are influenced by many genres of music, including metal, a predominately Anglo influenced sound. How righteous would I be to exclaim "White pride"? After all, they used to have Jeremy Ward.
Dude, anybody can have pride in anything, whether or not its legitimate or just a circle jerk depends on the context.
pibethekid 1 year ago 4
@pibethekid he's half german?

I mean, there's having pride in your ethnicity and culture, and then there's wearing it on your sleeve and shoving it down people's throats. Seriously, who listens to a Mars Volta song and their first reaction is "Latino Pride"? I'm a sociologist, anyone who cares to address this in a rational and reasonable way is more than welcome.
pibethekid 1 year ago
@pibethekid lol at the "im a sociologist" i bet your still in college because that sounds like something someone that took a sociology class would say
xt0olx 1 year ago
@pibethekid How in any way does this song shove "Latino Pride" down an individual's throats? Regardless, there is nothing wrong with cultural pride. As a "sociologist" you should know that it can create a sense of unity and self identity. Just because a hispanic band creates songs with spanish lyrics and occasionally reveals a Mexican flag when playing live does not mean that they are claiming their culture is the most superior. They are just influenced by their ethnic origins. Grow up.
