Wherever he goes, in the mall, in a ski lodge or at the beach, in buses, stadiums or in those abominable and ubiquitous waiting loops, modern man is exposed to acoustic pollution, relentless muzak, abysmally vacuous, demodulating, de-spiring, distractive/destructive mainstream, chock-full with consumers howlin' in unison to a single drum (machine).
If the vast majority of music is supposed to divert and to lull and only a small, inaccessible rest to focus and to inspire, why the aversion?
I really don't understand the point of all you people slagging this. You remind me of Mary Whitehouse, sitting in front of the telly desperately searching for something she doesn't like. Mike Westbrook leaves me cold, but i don't spend all my time searching out his things on Youtube and slagging them. Life is too short. I find this stimulating, life affirming stuff. If you don't, find something you do. I don't have to justify myself to you.
Hmm not a fan of the music presented here, but am a fan of Evan Parker, in the since that he's a gorgeous guy! Love his beard and specs. Woof all the way.
Booksteve. I like contemporary classical music, and I like dissonant music. But I also like structure, soul, expression and communication through music. All this says is WANK. The only emotions it evokes are anger and confusion, and maybe bewilderment. Some people might enjoy the sound made by monkeys playing about on orchestral instruments, but that doesn't make it music to my ears. It makes me angry because it goes a long way towards alienating contemporary music, a lot of which is very good.
try listening to music other than jazz (like contemporary classical music)and you will understand this a little more. By the standards of modern classical music, this is not dissonant. Maybe you just don't like it and other people do.
This is pathetic - have to agree with Richyboy, rde and neil. As a professional jazzer in this difficult musical climate, how is this supposed to help the scene - it just makes jazz laughable to the everyday public and totally inaccessable to them - talk about the "King's suit of clotthes!" The only reason these guys can survive is with the misuse of taxpayers' money called an Arts' Council Grant! No wonder the Fast Show took the piss out of jazz with their Jazz Club - "NNNIIICCCE!!"

Thanks. You are totally correct. I've sent this video to a few people and none of them class this as music. In fact, it made one person angry: 'what the f*** was that?!' was the reply!
For me this is not even free jazz..or aleatorism..there HAS to be some structure in music..even in Aleatorism you can see structure throught the ''building'' of orchestration..here all your thoughts are leading to a HUGE 0..no music..everyone hates that shit (even if he adores that...:P)

I'm sad to say that stuff like this gives contemporary music a bad name, all it does is make good musicians sound like beginners. How can you expect to get more people interested in jazz and instrumental music with shite like this. If my kids played like this in school they'd be having a right laugh, not acting all serious and pretentious as if it were some form of high art. If you want to here good contemporary big band jazz listen to Mike Westbrook, not this bollocks.
I like your comments Neil. I used to play in a trad jazz band and we did this stuff for a laugh. I reckon we were as goos (if not better!) than those guys.
There are however, limitations of what one should describe as music. This stuff is outside the boundaries in my opinion and is just funny. Funny because these guys get away with it.
It's important to explore this area of music. But... when will we stop calling it jazz. We really need a new definition on it, or a new definision on the old school jazz. It HAS to be separated soon.
A question for people that are lovers of this genre of Jazz:
This just seems like madness, chaos, a cacophony of noise, musicians suffering manic episodes. My questions are this: WHAT is the composer trying to portray with this piece? Is this Avant-Garde Jazz or Free-Jazz?
It is just music. Just listen to it. It is beautiful. To think that music can only be beautiful when it follows rules of harmony, melody etc. is not the right way to look at it. I know such music seems unattractive at first, but when I listen to it now I really don't understand how 5 years ago I could overhear all the wonderful things I acknowledge now. And don't listen to people who tell you that it's is somehow intellectual, or musician's music, because it's not.
I bought a Cd called "Barry Guy - portrait" the other day and fell in love with it. There is a duet with Evan Parker that i can´t get out of my had. Thanks for posting that great stuff! Its a great pleasure, especially in that video quality
I will kill to see these guys live!

Don't expect to be able to understand this music if your IQ is less than, let's say 130 or so.

This twat probably got an arts council grant to write this pish.
Total shite and if you tell me theres meaning in this you must be on drugs.
rde6565 2 years ago
Seeing as you deleted your previous comment (of which i have a copy in my email box), I shall answer your questions:
1. I wasn't on drugs at the time of the posting of my previous comment.
2. Music is a way of expressing one's self. If what you hear here is just random 'noise', then fair enough.
3. If such music makes you angry, dont listen!
At least 2 people gave me thumbs down on my previous comment here: Beware! You are commenting in the area of musical snobs!

Thanks for your reply. I was just thinking about this video today as well!
I have heard people say similar things to what you have written. That there is a certain 'calmness' about music like this.
Too bad my question got 2 thumbs down. There are some real snobs when it comes to classical or jazz on Youtube.

Thats probably the same "calmness" I got yesterday when I jammed my fingers in the car door.
