The cake turned out really pretty! But, I've been on this huge baking spree lately and I've watched HUNDREDS of videos on youtube, and it seems like your fondant was a little "wet" I guess you can say like there was too much moisture in it. It looked really soft and it looked like you rolled it out too thin. If you add a little bit more powered sugar to your fondant, it won't look as wet. And I think you should roll it out a bit thicker next time. These are just my opinions. :) Great job!
what did you put on the work surface before you rolled out the fondant ? i need something like it , icing sugar dries the fondant out too much i discovered , whilst making my mums iphone birthday cake :)
that was amazing :) i love this video! you did a great job! i'm making my birthday cake saturday and i'm excited and nervous. you make it look easy so i hope it is for me too! how long did you let the fondant sit before you used it?
AMAZING Cake For A First Timer!!! I Am Going To Make A Fondant Cake Soon For Christmas, So I Will See How That Goes, But I Doubt It Will Come Out As Good As Yours, I Would Totally Buy That!!!
power to the creatively brave, love your cake and you did it all from scratch, ( I have just done my first for my girls 21st and like your was really keen to get going, I didnt make my own fondant though!) You are the bomb! (oh, my cake yup it turned out pretty to look at and yummy to eat).Kindest regards kiwi cake girl, NZ
I love your cake, you did a very good job for your first time girl, don't let people bring you down... I got my first fondant cake on here and i didn't do that good lol. But with practice they get better and better.
Lol, yea... I put it in the fridge, but I messed around with it so much once it was out of the fridge that it got soft again. Oh well, lol. Thanks for the tips :)
Your video is so kewl! Awesome job for your FIRST cake, WOW! I enjoyed watching you make your cake in high speed with music:) I'm also learning how to make fondant cakes too, as a hobby. It's WAY cheaper than buying:)
looked great! loved the colors, did u have to make the fondant or it comes premade? i'm tryin to make a BIG cake for mi daughter's 2nd bday elmo theme. Thought it was smart how u flipped it over to tuck it under.
Thanks for the comment! I made the fondant myself. It's just marshmallow and powdered sugar. You can find an easy recipe on google or youtube. Lol, I don't think you are suppose to flip the cake to tuck the fondant, but it worked for me! Lol! Good luck on your daughter's cake :)
Well, sir, if you didn't see the title of the video... it was my FIRST fondant cake. I guess being a pastry chef means that you don't have to know how to read or have common sense. I had never made a cake before this. Yes, it took me a long time because IT WAS MY FIRST TIME.
Thanks for your concern, asshole. Why don't you put up videos of your work so we can compare? No? Because you are nothing but a troll with nothing better to do. btw, assholes like you get blocked :)
@24THEBAKER - Crumbing isn't usually necessary for fondant because the whole purpose of crumbing is so the crumbs don't show through the icing. It won't when you put fondant over it. While I still typically crumb my fondant cakes, it's not REALLY something you NEED to do. her cake turned out well, especially for her first fondant cake. You're just an asshole who thinks he knows it all.
i was going to see if i could get your marshmallow fondant recipe from you and what food coloring you use. the only fondant i know to use is the already ready fondant. i have only made one mini cake and it came out horrible because i didnt know what i was doing. lol. and your video was great!! thanks for making it!!
Hey, sorry it took me so long to respond. I just found the recipe online. It is 1 bag of marshmellows, 1 bag of powdered sugar, 1 tbsp of water, and 2-3 tbsp of vanilla extract (or any of flavoring you like)
What part are you talking about? Basically, I bake my cake. I let it cool. Then I ice it with butter cream icing and put it in the fridge for about an hour. After the icing is cold and hard, I cover the cake with fondant.
Did that answer your question? If not, let me know and maybe I can explain further :)
I make cakes all the time! This was fun and cute!! I'm inspired to do a vid as well. Not sure how to do the time lapse, but I'm smart and will figure it out. I also make my own fondant... much cheaper than buying it ready-made. Good job, girl!
that was funny when that girl came in and licked the mixer things. but the cake turned out very great for your first time. where you did buy that fondant? i like the colors
I actually made the fondant. It is really easy. It's just marshmallows and powdered sugar. You can buy the special food coloring and kneed the color into the dough.
I think you did a great job! :) Don't worry about people who just come on here and write DUDIE lol They wouldn't have the guts to try and make something and put it out there.
Thanks for the comment! I completely agree with you; that person has done anything that makes them proud enough to put it on youtube to show off their hard work. Citrus' face is DUDIE!
Are you calling my cake "Doodie?" Like, it's crap? Is that what you are saying? I can't tell because you can't spell, use proper punctuation, or make a coherant sentence.
Well, it was my first time ever making a cake, so don't expect it to look amazing. It was my first time and I think it looked great for a beginner.
You aren't actually mixing the crisco into the fondant. You just use it to lubricate your hands and the counter so the sticky marshmallow doens't stick.
Also, Crisco doesn't have a taste. If you use butter, it will leave a buttery taste on your cake.
is buttercream frosting necessary in a fondant cake? do you find working with fondant harder or easier than piping a cake? how long did it take you to make that cake? Great job btw.
Buttercream is not *necessary,* but it does make covering the cake with fondant easier. The butter in the buttercream becomes very hard when chilled so coving the cake or removing fondant and then recovering is easier. You can use regular store bought icing, but most icings don't get as hard and stiff like buttercream when chilled. I find fondant easier than pipping. My hand isn't steady enough for pipping lol. This cake took me about 8 hours because I only did 1 step at a time --->
When I made this, I baked the cake then waited for it to cool. Once it was cool, I made the buttercream. Then I iced it and put it in the fridge for a hour. After the butter cream was stiff, I colored my fondant and then covered my cake. Doing 1 step at a time take 4EVER! lol. If I made this same cake now, I could make it in about 2 hours because I can overlap steps or do more than one step at the same time.
I hope I answered your question and Thanks for the comment!
No, I never made a video about making butter cream. The first minute of this video, I am making the butter cream icing. I will make some more and post a video that is more clear about how to make it
i thought after you put butter cream frosting on the cake your suppose to put it in the fridge for an hr right? and than you roll your fondant out n apply it to the cake n than use the smoother.
You don't have to put it in the fridge, but it does make it easier to cover it with fondant. In my video, I did put it in the fridge for a few hours (I cut the camera off while I waited so you don't see it). At 2:41, you can see me touching the butter cream to see if it is hard enough after I took it out of the fridge.
At the time, I didn't have a smoother. I haven't used one on any of my cakes & they have all turned out fine.
In the video, this is my basic technique & my cakes are great!
I colored it with a green fondant coloring gel. After you make the fondant, put a few drops of the coloring gel on the fondant and you just kneed it in until there is a smooth color.
I am thinking about making my own wedding cake, Do you think making the box cake is easier. I wasn't share if I was going to make the cake from scratch. But I love this video, and it will help me a lot. Thank you
I think making your own wedding cake is a great idea! That is what I am going to do when ever that days comes for me lol.
I find that coving a box shaped cake is a little easier for me than a round cake. It really just takes practice. I would suggest make a few small "test" cakes and covering them before trying the real thing.
I hope that answered your question. Good luck and congrats on the wedding!
wow, i never thought about flipping the cake with a plate when you're covering it with the fondant! what a great idea! beautiful cake and thanks for uploading the whole thing, it was really helpful
wow that was fast and really good for your first. I have to questions: how did you get your fondant so shiny and what buttercream recipie did you use cuz i like the consistancy it gave you.
You can buy already made and packaged fondant at craft stores or at certain grocery stores. You just have to search for them. There is a store here called Hobby Lobby that carries it.
I have never purchased any, but I heard that the store bought fondant doesn't taste as good as home made marshmallow fondant.
Thanks! I watched a ton of vids to have a basic idea for the frosting technique. It did come out not so smooth because I didn't have the right tools I guess. You can't tell, but when I actually cut a piece out of the cake, on one side of the cake, there was 3 inches of frosting and on the other side, there was a centimeter of frosting! lol Oh well, it was still yummy and it was FUN!!! How did you cake turn out? I bet it was amazing!
what did you use for the frosting??
