Just a comment on the voice and the weight. Voice- amazing and powerful. Weight- not a problem. She has been about the same size for 20 years. It seems like she is doing fine to me!
It's a shame that the camerawork and sound recording are rather lo-tech and amateur. There's a kind of fogginess and echo to the sound, and a jerky image thats hard to watch. Still, better than not seeing or hearing this at all.
In addition, losing large amounts of weight over a short period of time can potentially cause problems with the voice. That's why singers are suppose to maintain a healthy steady diet and exercise regime that preferably benefits breathing.
Here's a vocal pedagogy lesson for you all that think singers shouldn't be over weight or that it harms the voice.
Obviously being obese is not healthy;however, it can be help to a singer. Being overweight or having fat around the stomach frees the abdominal muscles, due to gravity, from tension or tucking in. This in turn causes the singer to breath a deeper more beneficial breath, which in turn increases the amount of sound one can produce = POWERHOUSE!
Wow...HAHAHA And here I thought being overweight was a DISadvantage. Not that I'm going to use that as an excuse to continue down this rocky road to cancer or diabetes. ...but that sure is funny!
You are wrong, she got her stomach stapled, not a simple liposuction. Unfortunately she had to have her surgery re-done a year later, this is what kept her off the stage for 2 years.
Opera singers work hard for years to cultivate their talent and to achieve the end product that the viewers enjoy, and then ALL YOU CAN FOCUS ON IS THEIR WEIGHT! They are singers, NOT FASHION MODELS. They also play the parts of everyday people, SOME of whom, realistically speaking, MAY ACTUALLY BE FAT. Maybe they can't lose the weight, but MOST slim people can't even sing a tenth as good as SHE CAN! Thank goodness that slimness is not a firm requirement for singing the way she does.
@contessabrilliante Technicaly bigger vocalist that the upper hand since they will have a bigger diaphram. Same for musicians. My teacher is a preety big guy and when he plays trombone he only has to take a breathe every 5 or more measures. I am a verry skinny Bass Trombonist and I have to take a breathe every 2 or 3 meausures but of course my instrument requires more air.
The same goes for singers. The more air you can take in the longer and better sounding you will be. I suck at explaining :P
@Samurai9 Shes one of the best performers I have ever seen in my entire life. Every performance is riveting and well acted. Besides the fact that she sings like a goddess. Also her weight has not stopped her from getting work so why focus on it. I feel sorry for you that you need to find flaws in one of the best singers of this generation.
Absolutely stupendous singing! Brava, Ms. Blythe!

@firebug47 If you see her live there is an echo when she sings. Huge voices have that resonance.

Beautiful voice and such a beautiful woman. Is she a contralto or a mezzo?? Great voice for a Polinesso.

Her lustrous timbre and steady tone remind me of Marilyn Horn.

Great voice, excellent coloratura ability. But she must confront the weight problem.

Its people like you that forced Deborah Voight to get Liposuction. Just becuase a singer is big does not mean that they are going to be unhealthy!
