  • An 8 string is supposed to be treated as more of a groove instrument. I'm tired of seeing people going to 8 strings so they can go to "UBER BROOTAL" lows. The truth is...tremelo picking or even galloping patterns sounds like ASS. the low F# is supposed to be treated more like a bass string, its mostly for groove purposes.

  • dino does more 0-0-00-00 , over the span of 15 years or so his work very assorted and complex , he what i consider a true artist

  • Seriously... Dino is an idiot and a failed guitarist... why can't you get someone good like Tosin Abasi?... All Dino is good at is chugging away w/ powerchords on the lowest strings, repeating the exact same rhythms throughout each and every song in every band he's ever played in.

    Trust me, that is not a good way to market a product that was designed so that a player can utilize every single string to create music, not just the lowest 3.

  • @majorkeybaree It used to rock, but not when you use it every song. AC/DC rocked, and they used simple chord progressions, but they would have seriously sucked if they used the exact same progression in each and every song instead of switching it up like they do. And never once have I said that, and never onced have I claimed to be a "tough metal guy" so stop making childish assumptions.

    Oh, and that last bit was pretty ridiculous, as well.

  • hey! tomorrow i'm gonna buy this guitar. i have a question: i have searched for some 8-string sets on the internet and i've only found an ernie ball set; the problem is that the gauge is 0.10 and I play 0.9... does anybody know if there are some 0.9 eight string sets? and if not, where can i find a string wich is big enough? i don't wanna use bass strings because the magnetism does not work exactly like guitar strings and it would sound quite bad... any advice? thank you guys!

  • @ReleasingWeeps, if you go on d'addario's website you can order a 6 string set or a 7 string set then pick out an individual one for the 8th string. That way you can get pretty much whatever gauge you want

Did it ever occur to you that maybe he would also need to be able to play the songs that were written for 6 or 7 stringed instruments in standard tuning? Its a fucking hell of alot more versatile instrument, and only one possessed of a weak mind would not recognize the sonic possibilities afford by an eight string

  • Dino is a bad representative for the 8 string. You shouldn't buy an 8 string so you can tune super low, you should buy it for the amazing potential it has, look as Tosin Abasi.

    Meshuggah tunes a half step lower (F standard). Dino is a limited but hes not the worst 8 string user.

  • I think its up to the user how they regard their tool. It's perfectly logical the way Dino looks at the 8 string guitar for down tuning potential. And you realize that Tosin plays in a "Super low" dropped tuning too correct ? Mr. Abasi considers the 8 string a guitar with a lot of strings. Nothing more. Nothing less. I don't understand why this generation of guitarists regards the 8 string as some mystical instrument

  • Dino makes some good and interesting riffs, but it seems the only reason he can come up with for why he plays an 8 string is so he can sound heavier and he doesn't seem that educated about 8 strings and what you can really do with them, he almost stuttered when he was talking about what each string is tuned to. I'm not familiar with his music, but I'm pretty sure he would've been fine, if not even better if he stuck with a 7 string. Ihsahn on the other hand makes much more good use with an 8.

  • I think Dino is great. Met him a couple times, really nice guy.

    But, someone needs to tell these guys accusing 6-strings of becoming "floppy", that their 7-strings are the SAME SCALE LENGTH!! If the string gauges are the same, the tension is the same.

    It's not as hard as you might think, I use a 2mm thick pick and that counteracts it and makes stuff so punchy.

    This is only on my dean - for my metal stuff - though.

    That too I think is why heavier strings go well. Counteract the lower tension.

  • @TimJMorrison 12's on a 24.75" scale wouldn't be too bad. I can't even imagine playing 12's tuned standard on a 25.5" scale.

    I have thought about trying a set of 12's, but I tune a half-step down.

  • @TimJMorrison I often use a Dugain Standug made of box tree wood. It's about 3/8 inch thick plays and sounds very tight and the attack and the punch is killer....

  • Wow....for an official video they don't give the sponsored musician much respect do they? By tagging this w/ Ihsahn they really stretch the limits, since he is in it for a second or two. And then they mis-title an Emperor song at the end; which also displays a lack of tack since a track from one of Ihsahn's solo records would be much more appropriate.

  • I understand Ihsahn, who plays really complex music and may need such a thing. But Dino could play on three string guitar and that should suffice.

  • Dino has really upped his playing on teh new album. Whereas he used to really just chug away, now he solos more and has really stepped his game up IMO. Besides personally I find it better to use 7s or 8s because tuning that low feels uncomfortable on the narrower neck of a 6 string.

  • Okay, the obvious bullshit aside, how are the frequencies too low?... Dino's tuning is a whole step /higher/ than that of a 4-string bass guitar, and those are easily heard, so you negated your previous point... If /you/ actually knew how to play, you'd know that bass guitars, pianos, cellos and several other instruments are entire /octaves/ lower than this guitar and yet can still be heard without any trouble...

  • The problem is with the overall register of the song. If all of the instruments are in those ultra low registers with little else in the mid-range to balance it out, you end up in "tonic ambiguity", where the ear can't tell the difference between whole and half-step intervals. Regardless, you end up with tonic ambiguity anyway as you continually drop in register.

  • fuck 6 strings standard tuning and D is for pussies. i play 7 took it down a step to A and love it 6 strings are good for C and drop C thats it

  • @deathcore1239 Silly deathcore kid, if you knew how to use 6 string guitars other than for heavy music...maybe then you would appreciate the guitar and music in general, I tune down my 6-string to Drop-B sounds heavy as hell and there is not much of string tension issue for me since my Ibanez was made to handle drop tunings.

    The tuning basically repeats itself, but to be able to play barre and power chords with the same fingering as a 6- or 7-string, the 8th string was dropped a half-step (since there are 4 semitones between G and B instead of 5)

    they just put a thicker guage string on the 7th or 8th string.

    so instead of it being a low tuning and floppy-ness

    they can have the right tension and have it a low tuning because thicker strings naturally have a lower tune.

    you could just stick a thicker guage strings on a 6 string g-tar but then you loose your high e and what not
