I still remember the 1st time I tried this. I was slightly tipsy at that time, and my Finnish friend offered me a piece that was pharmaceutical grade. I sobered up at once. LOL. Took a liking to it (I'm Asian btw), but never had the... ah... fortitude to consume more than just a tiny mouthful in one sitting XD
@VorpalDrake Just yesterday, 2 of my friends were drinking, and one them convinced the other guy to pour out a quarter glass of Salmiakki alcohol, and the latter kept trying to pour it into to the former's glass of moscato whenever they toasted, after the first sip, LOL! XD
@mvpsfin Salmiakki on semmonen karkki et vaatii totutteluu, suomalaiset ei huomaa siinä mitään outoa kun on pennuista syöneet sitä. Ei kaikki tietenkään, mut kuiteski.
Exactly the same reactions were shown by every single German I served Umeboshi (sour pickled plum) which I brought from Japan. So I don't really get this. :D
I just love Japanese people :) and I just love Salmiakki as well :)
Except that Japanese whalers and dolphin killers should drown and be castrated - and I do hope everyone eating those will get somekind of bad illness.
En kyllä tajuu miks ihmiset ei tykkää salmiakista, jopa turistioppaat kehottaa välttää ne. Salmiakki on just hyvää! / I dont get it why people dont like salty liquorice, even tourist guides says not to taste it. Salty liquorice is just delicious!
@MesiveloniFin I know right! I'm Swedish and can eat buckets of salty liquorice. If I ever go to Japan I will probably get depressed because of the lack of it lol
poor non-scandinavians don't know what they are missing ^^
I`m from Finland...and I also don`t like salmiakki...but I can still eat it without twisting my face like that...and without spliting it out from my mouth. .
We had a Japanese, Chinese and Thai exchange student at our school and they didn't like salmiakki. :D But the Austrian girl liked it.
I'm from Finland and I don't remember what salmiakki tastes like but I have a feeling that I don't like it. Hmm, I think I have to go and buy it tomorrow just to make sure.
Once we actually made salmiakki in the chemistry class. It was like white powder and tasted just like salmiakki. In shops salmiakki is black and they are like candies.
@riadtel22 Salmiakki is salty liquorice in some form(it can be hard like a lolipop, it can be so chewy its almost like a raw leather chew-toy for dogs or soft like fudge or jelly). It is usually made with ammonium chloride rather than regular table salt. Sometimes a tinge of smoke-flavour is added.
Wasabi is a green paste that tastes like horseradish or a strong mustard without the salt, sugar and vinegar.
@riadtel22 well, as others have said, wasabi is like a hot mustard .. sort of, most like horseradish, but a bit stronger. personally i love hot/spicy foods but good lord, salty licorice? i dont like black licorice to begin with, thats .. ewww. no, just no. i've never tried natto, but i've had some raw/fermented soybean drinks .. theyre an acquired taste for sure, but i like them. usually the sushi i eat always has at least some wasabi in it. i draw the line at thai chilies though.
Interesting, now i feel pretty curious about the taste. Is it spicy or only salty, does it "burns" like some liquor or its a different feeling. In México we have lots of spicy and salty sweets and desserts "Saladitos" are what came to my mind after watching this video, after reading that Samiakki means Salty liquorice (Regaliz in spanish) i'm thinking in "Borrachitos" liquor flavored sweets and "Licor de Nanche" something like umeshu but made of Nanches
It seem they don't like it... Even tought it's so good. But maybe it 's something you need time get used to. I myself didn't like it when I was child (even tought I'm finnish), but now I love it.
@BrightNight03 I love it (I'm Finnish though but still). Maybe you just have to get used to it as a kid or something. But for me and basically anyone here it's just like any other candy.
I can't understand why so many people hates Salmiakki. I think it's best eatable thing in the world :) maybe it is cultural differences, like i don't understand all what comes from Japan tho O.o Love & Peace -Salmiakkihullu
this happens with Americans, Koreans, Germans etc. i tried to give it to my friends once, and well.. they don't appreciate it as much as i do as a native Finn :D
You can't really compare salmiakki and wasabi. If you've ever eaten mustard (which I know all of you Finns have), you can handle wasabi. If you really want to grasp the concept of an acquired taste I recommend you to taste some fremented soy beans, aka natto. Most Japanese people have been eating natto since they were children and really enjoy the taste... Most westerners on the other hand want to throw up from the smell alone. Natto for them is just like salmiakki for us.
It's funny, I happen to be in Japan at the moment, and just saw a Japanese actor/comedian gag on some salmiakki on TV. So I googled it to find out what it was... and a link to this video came up.
